@46:00 playing whatever is comfortable, I remember hearing about Dave Mustaine that he played with his fingers slanted and limited him but when he "relearned" during his therapy he had a jazz guy show him to finger the notes straighter. Techniques like that are important because sometimes we adopt a playing posture habit that isn't as beneficial.

When people like Jordan or Keith (Emerson) play I watch and it amazes me just how they can fly across the keyboard like they do. Of course Keith is playing like 3 at once as an orchestra and is on just some nonhuman level.

This was a really good interview. It was well conducted, and Jordan gave nice tips to those who want to refine the technical approach and study ethics.

Thanks for this. Jordans awareness of how things affect his practice and playing is the key. Tone patches he has used in developing his technique and a crowd affects his force on the keys, awareness.
"Play what feels comfortable". No. Your course of details on how and why to pick is much appreciated. Ive learned from this that certain types of picks are motivational and make me curious. Ive also found that finding what makes for some type of immediate emotional response is key as the main thing is to practice. So for me i play left and right handed guitars with picks either 0.88 or 1 mm.
I practice for the discipline, the control, and to escape reality.
In '93 at UW Seattle i was depressed i got addicted to stimulants(pseudoephedrine and caffeine) and would run late at night on the Burke Gilman trail to escape Seattle(Seattle did Kurt Cobain in). Ive since escaped Seattle and the grunge hellhole but i still want to escape as most things bore me.
So to me guitar picks are fascinating as it makes me curious. As an added bonus practicing guitar gives a highly beneficial mental training apparatus applicable to everything, plus its fun! My main goal is to practice cleanly as fast as possible and hopefully with bizarre chord changes not heard before as if I was abducted by an Alien Overlord dictating that I must excel at guitar.
Ive examined my picking. On thursday i noticed i do picking in a directional manner. Sixth string, 5 7 8 frets down up down then fifth string 578 down up down. So what did i do? Slowed it down and noticed my headspace. Sixth string 5 7 8, down up down fifth string 5 7 8 up down up. This focus on the pick and feelings helps my tone quality. Then at fast speeds i just let my picking hand pick however and i notice there is some neural learning and it makes playing feel new and that feels like progress. Im always seeking influences to tune my subconscious so doors are opened in the universe and answers come to me as what to play next.
I very much like your teaching Justin.
In the eighties REH videos, Guitar World, Metal Method, ive done them all not once taught how and why to pick a certain way. They were dreadfully frustrating and i felt lied to as there was no standard basis of what to build on technically on guitar.
I remember praying in '91 at my dorm room UW Seattle to be the best guitarist possible. I waited 32 years for this knowledge.

Great interview. The part about understanding your headspace when playing rings so true. From practice to stage, it feels like my skill drops by 50%.

I'm a 68 year old keyboard player and Jordan is my hero. Even more so than Emerson, Wakeman, Lord, and all those who came before him. He's a great person too! I've met him and he;s always make time for me. This is a great interview. Thank you.

I got into Jazz recently and I hear McCoy Tyner 'Passion Dance' influence in Dream Theater's 'The Dance of Eternity', not only sounds similar but both are "dances". Must have been Jordan.

Ive recently noticed Yngwies "masterclass". Not clear if Yngwie actually teaches. In his REH videos this was just him showing off. So it seems once again Yngwie is trying to make more money.
Justins teaching is specific, precise and useable. So many players have been waiting so long for this.

Great interview! Wonder how Jordan feels about Anton Oparin…

    • @5zazen
      @5zazen 8 місяців тому

Anton is very knowledgeable. I found him very hard to listen to as he starts and stops when he talks and touches on one subject then goes in an entirely different topic he is a bit hard to listen to. In his long video he started the real material after a half an hour and it seems he selectively tells small tips but seems to hold back info. After an hour i felt extremely annoyed by the pacing.
Justins videos are one thousand percent better and Anton doesnt have any new videos so...
Going on one topic than going an a rant to be funny is what Anton did in his video, very annoying.

Sehr cooles Interview, war echt interessant! Hinsichtlich Gitarrenunterricht.

    About the guitar players mentality:
How many guitar players are needed to change a lightbulb?
One! But all the others will be there, staring. Half of them say they could do it faster, half of them say they could do it with more feel 🤣

Jordan is a great piano/keyboardist I'd love him not to mimic the guitar though....I also would love him to record an album in a Steely Dan vein. He is amazing when he play the DT songs with the acoustic piano as well.....I'd love him to make an acoustic album with a mix of his composition and pieces like Take a Pebble from ELP or Awaken/Parallels/Turn of the century by Yes something from Genesis some Pink Floyd etc... He is a treasure and I really hope he will widen his musical spectrum towards something more jazzy/classical and less metal.
