This song was about a person who has the traits of *Three Movie Stars* the Eyes of Bette Davis, the Hair of Jean Harlow (Harlow Gold), and the sighs (attitude) of Gretta Garbo , three major Hollywood Divas of the 30s and 40s (I think Harlow died in the 30s).
This is the correct interpretation. The song is really a tribute to all of the legendary actresses of that era, as it paints a picture of an almost peerless seductress with the signature attributes of three of the most celebrated women of early film. Of course, Davis got top billing in this song because she was an absolute giant of cinema (and "Bette Davis Eyes" makes for an excellent chorus), but Jean Harlow and Greta Garbo were quite formidable stars in their own right.
After this song became a hit single, Bette Davis wrote letters to Kim Carnes and the songwriters to say she was a fan of the song (covered by Carnes in 1981) and thank them for making her "a part of modern history." One of the reasons the legendary actress loved the song is that her granddaughter thought her grandmother was "cool" for having a hit song written about her. ☺

Describing Bette Davis as iconic would be an understatement. She was one of the greatest actresses of Hollywood’ s golden age. She never cared how difficult a role was or how bad she had to look to do it justice. And although she did not like her own looks, she was very beautiful .

Bette Davis was an iconic actress from the golden era of movies. One of her most iconic lines was "Fasten your seatbelts; it's going to be a bumpy night." It was in "All About Eve" (1950), which was also Marilyn Monroe's first film. Bette started her career in the 1930s and was one of the leading actresses during that time who managed to still get some leading roles past 35 years old. "All About Eve" was one of them. She was willing to have a look that was less than flattering and let her awesome acting abilities shine. A couple of her later movies are highly recommended, "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" and "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte." Not a Bette Davis film, but "Sunset Boulevard" with Gloria Swanson is an iconic movie. She literally was a silent film star and she played a forgotten silent film star who still thought people knew who she was. You just have to watch it. It's an iconic movie.

Bette Davis was a highly talented movie star of the 1930's, '40s, and 50's (and even the 1960's) who won 2 Oscars for Best Actress and otherwise was nominated another 8 times for acting. But all of it was on black and white film, dramas and melodramas, so mostly lost to the modern generations. Yes, she could act with her eyes.
Everyone is telling you that Bette Davis was a very successful actress and she had a LONG career. A long time ago I learned a tidbit about her from someone who was doing the movie "Murder On The Orient Express" with her. They said if/when someone forgot their line(s) SHE COULD TELL THEM what they were supposed to say because she memorized THE ENTIRE SCRIPT! She was sharp as a tack. Doubt anyone today can do that.
Bette Davis is my FAVORITE actress from the GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD and up unto the '70s. She made 100 a movies in her lifetime, starting in 1931 and her last in 1989. She was born in 1908 and died in 1989. I LOVE every role she played, she was a TREMEMDOUS actress, I LOVE all the movies I have seen her in, in my 77 years of life. You need to do more research on her, and you can bring up a list of ALL the movies she made in chronological order. Also you can find photos of her at every stage of her life, on line. Kim Karnes also mentions TWO other FAMOUS ACTRESSES from BETTE DAVIS' TIME. "HER hair is HARLOW gold" refers to the actress JEAN HARLOW who was a blonde, and then Kim sings "she's got GRETA GARBO standoff sights" refers to the actress GRETA GARBO. You should explore ALL 3 of these VERY VERY FAMOUS ACTRESSES from the "GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD." Check out some of their movies!! I LOVE movies from that period SO MUCH. THEY are all VERY INTERESTING WOMEN.
She had a pair of duets in the early eighties, one with Randy Meisner from the Eagles, "Deep Inside My Heart" and one with Kenny Rogers, "Don't Fall In Love With Dreamer!" Both are fire!
Bette play damn near everyone on both sides of good and bad you could spend a lot of rainy weekends watching Bette Davis movies. She continued to acts well into the 60’s and I think maybe the 70’s! Amazing eyes and talented , too!
It just kills me when a younger person asks who is Betty Davis. She was a tough as nails huge movie star!! She had beautiful expressive eyes. She ruled the box office in the late 30s and early 40s. Please check out some of her movies. Have you ever heard the expression, ' fasten your seat belts ,its going to be a bumpy night" that is from her character in the movie All About Eve, please check out some of her movies, I would start with What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. Please consider doing a reaction channel for movies, I think you would love it!!
I am 60 so of course I know who Bette Davis is, but I can't remember the last time I just randomly ran across one of her movies. Younger people don't even watch TV like that anymore. They stream stuff, and can pick exactly what they want to see.
Bette Davis was known for her large, expressive eyes. Davis was known for her powerful, captivating eyes and dramatic acting style, which became a signature part of her on-screen persona. The phrase is used to describe a woman with similar striking, penetrating eyes and an alluring, confident demeanor.
I just love this era of music. Late 70s to early 80s was so consistently good. I remember listening to one great song after another on my clock radio when I was a kid, using the cyan blue clock display as sort of a night light. If it wasn't for the commercials, I don't think I would have ever fallen asleep.
"Bette Davis Eyes" was originally recorded in a 1920s jazz style by Jackie DeShannon on her 1975 album "New Arrangement." DeShannon wrote the song with the songwriter Donna Weiss. According to DeShannon, she got the idea after watching the 1942 Bette Davis movie "Now Voyager." It was Donna Weiss who submitted the demo to Carnes, who along with her band and producer Val Garay, came up with the hit arrangement for the song.
TY for the fascinating info. I had no idea Jackie wrote as well as sang! BP should check out Jackie DeShannon's "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." Love that song.
This song was a massive hit in the 80s. The phrase "Bette Davis eyes" was used a lot for a while to describe any woman with a tough, hypnotic sort of look. Totally agree with Carnes' sound being similar to Bonnie Tyler's; there was also Bonnie Raitt and of course Stevie Nicks, whose voices were also rough-edged but maybe just a touch less so than Carnes' and Tyler's.
BP just made me feel like Methuselah! 🤣I don't think he noticed the references to Jean Harlow and Greta Garbo, either. Ahhhhh, BP, you've got to rabbit hole some old movies - Bette was a super-famous iconic actress way back in the day - she had great big eyes. Yes, before my time, but not my mom's - so I grew up watching a lot of those old movies.
LOVE this song and LOVE Kim Carnes raspy voice in this. One of my favorite 80’s songs! I’ve known Betty Davis in Disney’s The Watcher in the Woods (original movie) and have recently watched Jezebel with her in it. My grandma is a BIG fan and I’ve spent time watching her favorite movies with her.
Bette Davis was a famous actress. She had big beautiful blue eyes. She smoked but used a long cigarette holder and she was always using her hands to dismiss people or to slap someone. She portrayed a strong take charge woman. If you look at the beginning of the song when they pan to the wall there’s a shadow on it in the shape and mannerisms of Bette Davis smoking her cigarette in its long cigarette holder. Greta Garbo is also mentioned in this song and she was also a beauty from way back in the 40’s. When someone “snows” you it means they deceive you. They tell you what you want to hear but don’t mean it just so they can get what they want. People also use the phrase he/she did a “snow job” on me.
Kim Carnes is also one of the high profile artists in the 'USA For Africa' video. I LOVE 'Bette Davis Eyes' Bette Davis is one of the GOAT actors (from back in the day when female actors were referred to as actresses) EVER!!!
Bette Davis is a Hollywood legend who made over 100 Films and received 10 Academy Award Nominations. She won two. Bette Davis, Jean Harlow and Greta Garbo, were all icons of the silver screen. Bette Davis always played a badd ass character!
You'd like Kim Carnes and Kenny Rogers duet - Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer
I've loved this song for years! I'm so happy to see it getting some play! ❤❤❤
My favorite Bette Davis line, "I'd love to kiss you, but I just washed my hair." From the 1932 movie "The Cabin in the Cotton."
Hello BP wow merci infiniment de passer cette magnifique chanson très bon rythme Kim très belle voix j'ai danser jusqu'à l'aube sur ce tube de mes années folles nostalgie souvenirs inoubliable merci 😱👍👏💖
Nice, my friends husband produced this. Won a Grammy for it.
He did a great job , I have loved this song since I was 10 .
Val Garay?
@@fkd1963 Yep
I was on that set as they wrapped this music video. That was a thrill. 😊
Oh wow!!
Act with her eyes is a perfect description!!!
Everyone was a big fan of Bette Davis. From Australia!!🇦🇺
Betty was a legendary movie star....at least you are wiling to learn...love your reactions.
Bette*
@@cup_cuppy_cuppers5817 do you feel better
That song is from March '81 and I never got tired of listening to it!!! I was 14 back then ;-)
Bette Davis is my FAVORITE actress from the GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD and up unto the '70s.
Simply put Bette Davis was the actress’s actress!
Bette Davis, her and Katherine Hepburn were my favourite actresses from the golden era of Hollywood
One of the first 45's I bought with my allowance, and played on my BeeGees record player. Yes I'm old.
I've about worn out my Bette Davis dvd of Now Voyager. She was a phenomenal actress and I love this song!
Betty Davis, Gretta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Bridgette Bardot, Jane Mansfield etc.... all old time Famous Movie Stars
Brigitte Bardot was French though and not really a Hollywood actress. (Yes, I know Garbo was Swedish, but she *did* work in Hollywood.)
@@imrehundertwasser7094 I don't care what country anyone came from they were all famous stars!
@@imrehundertwasser7094 Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot, often referred to by her initials B.B., is a French Former Actress, Singer, and Model
Bette Davis was known for her large, expressive eyes. Davis was known for her powerful, captivating eyes and dramatic acting style, which became a signature part of her on-screen persona. The phrase is used to describe a woman with similar striking, penetrating eyes and an alluring, confident demeanor.
Betty Davis and Joan Crawford Era!
Great scary movies!
It was a HUGE HIT, even here in Brazil. A real masterpiece of pop music, timeless.
Kim Carnes was in "We are the World", she sang in the group with Heuy Lewis and Cyndi Lauper.
That is such a cool story to the song. Thanks for sharing I like the song even More ❤❤❤❤
TY for the fascinating info. I had no idea Jackie wrote as well as sang! BP should check out Jackie DeShannon's "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." Love that song.
Awesome reaction to one of my all time fave songs.
Huge song when I was kid, love her voice.
Check out”whatever happened to baby Jane”” awesome Bette Davis / Joan Crawford movie !!!!!
Yeah, but that was when they were old and they aren't looking their best, lol. All About Eve, Jezebel when she was younger.
@@bkm2797 yes she was but she was great playing the older roles!!! She was awesome!!!
It was a weird film, kind of depressing so I'm not a fan, but their acting was memorable.
I was going to mention Garbo too.
Bette davis. Was a great actress
Kim Carnes and Kenny Rogers "Don't fall in love with a dreamer" So beautiful!
Betty Davis is a legend. Her eyes r gorgeous. She could really throw herself into a role. She was a standout for that time period.
Kim Carnes is also one of the high profile artists in the 'USA For Africa' video. I LOVE 'Bette Davis Eyes' Bette Davis is one of the GOAT actors (from back in the day when female actors were referred to as actresses) EVER!!!
That was the one and only Bette Davis. A true Hollywood legend. One of the best actresses of all time.
Love her voice! She also did a duet with Kenny Rogers called "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer".
This song is a guilty pleasure for me. If this song comes on...i am listening to the whole thing.
Iconic song!
That voice though!
There’s raspy, then theres gravely! Kim! Love it.
Betty Davis - Legendary.
One of my favorite pop songs of all time.
Bette Davis is a Hollywood legend who made over 100 Films and received 10 Academy Award Nominations. She won two. She was the Meryl Streep of her era and fought for women to be portrayed as strong, smart and Human on screen! My personal favorites are All About Eve, Now Voyager, Jezebel, and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Check her out!
She also sang in the We Are the World video. She was standing with Huey Lewis and Cyndi Lauper!
Betty Davis, is/was an outstanding actress. Check her out.
My favorites of hers are her duet with Kenny Rogers "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", "I'll Be There Where The Heart Is", and "Crazy In the Night"
Legendary actress. If you decide to watch some old movies, hers are some of the best.
❤nunca passa de moda❤ sempre sempre brilhante 🌟
When she snows you.

Kim was in the USA for Africa lineup. You'll be able to identify her next time you watch that video❤
She sang right after Cyndi lauper and did did a trio with Cyndi and Huey Lewis.
Great 80s song .. still on my playlist
When she snows you means to fool you or trick you
