Welcome to the world of the man I call "God"! For me, RT is not only the greatest English songwriter of the last five decades, but also the greatest guitarist, equally brilliant when playing solo acoustic, or rocking out with an electric band.
If you're interested in investigating another song from the album (the whole album is fab), a couple of the best showcases for the magisterial voice of Linda Thompson are the title song, which is very upbeat, and he last song, The Great Valerio, which is a *genius* song, magnificently tense and poised. That would be my top recommendation!
You should check out Richard Thompson's newer work. He is in his 70s, but he is still actively composing and performing. Fifty years of practice can be seen in his current work.
Give 'Pour Down Like Silver' a listen. Beautiful album.
I've always read the lyrics as being about the suffering artist. The pale faced lady being the creative urge. "Everything you do, you do for me". But I could be wrong. : )

Fairport Convention, not Fairpoint. Fairport Covention are the best English folk band ever. Liege & Lief is one of the best albums ever in any genre. Listen to it and marvel at Sandy Denny, one of the best female voices ever.
