Small detail: the bassoon solo at 29'21" with the dotted figure followed by the horn imitation. Almost always the bassoon plays the dotted figure clearly and correctly and the horn player "compromises" it a little as it is very difficult to do. In this performance, Myron Bloom, the principal horn is the one to play it accurately. The bassoonist plays it just a bit lazily--surprising in a Szell/Cleveland performance.
I think, the film is an extra take. You can see there Rafael Druian as the concertmaster. But in the concerts on 22. and 24. of september 1966 he was the soloist with Berg concerto. Than he would not have played the Beethoven symphony in the second half of the concert. Very intensive performance of Beethovens fifth.
Magnificently played by the Cleveland Orchestra but no repose, overly driven where the music need possess both weight and color. His tyranny on the podium somehow should have led him to more Bass, less treble
Sony had nothing to do with this, as they acquired Columbia years later, and Columbia probably had little or nothing to do with this as it's an in-house live recording. Some of Szell's Epic recordings for Columbia were superb in terms of engineering, e.g., Strauss Don Quixote.
The master and the music will always be remembered. Bravo!!
Eccellent , as usual ! My favorite with Szell is the live in Salzburg '69 with Wiener Philharmoniker: devastating!

... thank you for this treasure....
I think Szell's best recording of the Beethoven fifth is with the Concertgebouw; 1966 rec.Philips.

足讚
The Bell Telephone Hour performance of the 4th movement was staged for the cameras using the families of the Orchestra as the audience.
死期を自覚したか、なにか切羽ずまっているよね。極めて切ない演奏だよね。セルっていい奴やったんやね。

Great, if you can make it past the crappy Sony engineering. They didn't know what they had in Szell and Cleveland Orch.
