On this Fathers Day, flashbacks from the '60s of my dad taking me to Severance Hall to hear the Cleveland Orchestra and George Szell live for the first time, and Schubert's 8th was on the bill. The pathos but also the warm and incomparable tonality of the performance, especially the strings, that evening haunts me to this day.
Thanks for posting this wonderful performance. I do wish we could hear what the master tape sounded like. This one sounds like it was taped off air from the radio broadcast with significant dynamic range compression. You can hear it dampen down the volume every time there’s a crescendo, which is quite irritating.
a valedictory rendition of Schubert's 8th Symphony- beautiful and poignant. BUT it wasn't Szell's last broadcast or performance. he must have conducted at least a dozen more with his final broadcasts being at Expo 70 in Japan in May 1970. Most of these are accessible on UA-cam.I have the radio broadcasts and they are incomparable performances by both conductor and the CO.
Such a great master - thank you for this precious upload.

あらゆる意味で完璧な演奏だ。感動した。
(KOREA) Thanks for the upload! I really like Szell's rendtion of "Unfinished".
Fantastic performance. Superior in every way to Szell and the Cleveland's studio recording.
Very good! With Cloyd Duff in the timpani and Szell, amazing!!

Great to have this, but . . . it's a few bars short!
the orchestra seems to know … Indeed
I was 12 days old and very colicky apparently. Is there a more colicky symphony?
