Written in 4 movements....The 2nd and 4th movements remain my clear favorites of this Symphony. The first Allegro sure gets people going, and is a great set up for 2nd movement which is the great Andante. The last two are so dynamic, and builds to the fury of the powerful finish. Among the very best Symphony pieces ever written by a human. Thank you Beethoven.
Having performed this many times as a French hornist. I have to say that Bernstein is the best at conducting this symphony, every time he conducts he will make small adjustments to it and by looking at him he would let you know if you were off key or other mistakes. There are many comments here about the conductor. They are valid as far as they go. The real genius lies within the composer. IMO, this is the most magnificent piece of music ever written.
Yes. The musical insight and intuition Beethoven had created this amazing piece of pure music. In my opinion, on par with Bach considering the terrible handicaps which Beethoven endured while creating his music - going deaf, & family problems. I think Bach's support system (like 20 kids) and stability enabled him to produce much more stuff for longer... But some of Bach's compositions contain similar insight and intuition from a different time with different instruments and orchestras.
I can't believe those people in the audience are just sitting there in the 4th movement I would be moving and leaning forward This production is spectacular.

Additionaly, Bernstein always get the right tempo for every part of the score. Really marvelous, it's a must to enjoy.
4th last movement (25:05) clearly the best ever written by LVB, IMHO. The final section seems will never end. As soon as you wait for the dramatic a epic culmination a fist of oboes, a solo of french corno and a flute mantain the romance with the cathartic last part of this master piece. Eleven minutes of pure energy coming from the very universe until our souls. Magnificent!

Maestro Bernstein's music and personality reach the heart. Always. And yes, his technical mastery is a huge part of it. However, with such a twinkle in his eye and his impersonation of many moods, he makes the individual musician feel he is right there with him or her. Orchestra and conductor underplay somewhat the tension and vehemence of the opening movement to make the finale the culmination. With careless treatment this movement can get tedious - especially with the exposition repeated - but here there are slight, subtle increments in intensity, loudness, excitement that keep it alive and satisfying to the very end.
One of the memorable things to come out of the sixties was Leonard Bernstein's young peoples concerts, broadcast Saturday afternooon's in black and white.
If I'm not mistaken, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is playing. I know the musicians, I saw everyone at Beethoven's fifth concert performed by Pollini and Karl Boehm in 1979
With Berstein it is the most emphatic poetic version, exciting and full of tenderness of the deaf. The human species is surprised there, steep in itself, demanding itself seeking greatness
This version feels so alive, as if I am walking in a summer meadow with the composer himself and see what he hears in his mind. There's nothing too static about it :)
This song is cool Even this Classic And Acute In the same Music For semi final ORIGINAL high pitched sound and low pitched sound,I Like That One Effect TCO Music Same Impossible!
Beethoven reminds me that even if I were to become handicapped in some way - I could still code for computers or fix cars. How? Because I've played instruments, written code and fixed cars for years. I see the genius he is - he used his memory and mind to "feel" the music like when I'm writing code without testing. He felt vibrations in music like a tuner like I feel vibrations in cars or listen to their sounds and just know what's wrong with them without even touching them. It's years of getting to know something and being intimate with it. He was a true genius and a gift to mankind.
I've heard many performances of this where the conductor is too rushed, or doesn't have correct tempo, phrasing, dynamics, etc., but this performance is just perfect!
My mother was so disappointed. She thought she had a genius for a son when at age 3 I would pull the 7 record 78 rpm set of this wonderful symphony off the shelf, set it on the record changer and sit rapt listening to it. Sadly, for her and fortunately for me, I turned out to be far from genius material but this piece of music has been at my core since then. That well worn set was Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra and this wonderful Bernstein interpretation comes the closest to that of all the multitude of versions I have heard in my lifetime. Thanks for putting this up.
Bernstein is remembered for conducting the New York Phil all those years, but I think he reached his apex with the VPO. He brings such energy and fire to great works and to operas like Fidelio and Falstaff. I love his work with the VPO.
By far, the finest performance of this masterpiece. Bernstein masterfully summons its full force --and without rushing it! So many performances of the great masterpieces are RUINED by an exaggerated tempo! I love Newmontaigne's comment about being made to "feel invulnerable, mighty, and triumphant against anxiety and depression." Too bad that drug addicts had never been introduced to Beethoven!
I wonder what's the meaning of all this critics based on the tempo. Really, why don't you empty yourselves of your self with all of your ficticious opinions and just listen to the music with all your heart? This is so wonderful and powerful!
It seems that only under Bernstein's lead I can fully appreciate this piece. Otherwise I always tend to hear some of the horrible renditions playing in the back of my mind that have tortured this tremendously famous piece over the years. Thank you, Lenny.
Maestro Bernstein was incredibly tactile and had beautiful intepretations of the symphonies he conducted plus the music score was written all over his face in expression. He was also rather attractive!! Maybe this is your answer Ales Japelj.

Lenard Bernstein really does his research on Beethoven music his interpretation on Beethoven,s music is the greatest.
There is Beethoven and then there is everyone else.
that Bernstein is smling makes me feel so gratified. Too many conductors are grim and withholding of their joy in the music.
Watch Gustavo Dudamel conduct. He's definitely one of a kind.
@@alemarion Bernstein is the best.
The best symphonic finale of all times.
Amazing piece of pure music (no lyrics). And, an excellent recording - both the audio and the cinematography...
-_-
If I'm not mistaken, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is playing.
24:25, one of the great movements in music!
Allergro starts at 24:40 and is one of the greatest in music history.
This version feels so alive, as if I am walking in a summer meadow with the composer himself
and see what he hears in his mind. There's nothing too static about it :)
I have looked long and hard for the perfect TEMPO performance, and this is it!
Have a look at The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra doing Beethoven's Fifth. I really think it surpasses this performance.
what an experience this must have been live
A brilliant version...they are nailing the tension dynamics, refrain, harmonies....very well done. Fantastic++++++++++
+Louise Gendron This is what it's all about.
Love it -- Lenny made the "Beehoven face" just before he hit the downbeat!!! lol
Here Bernstein is Beethoven.
It's the most interpretative execution of the Fifth
Fifth should be listen in 3 version Celibidache, Bernstein, Karajan. Hard to say which is the best but all should be listen.
Una delle migliori interpretazioni! Grandissimo Maestro Bernstein.
He has etched every symbol of the marvelous score in his soul!
I love Newmontaigne's comment about being made to "feel invulnerable, mighty, and triumphant against anxiety and depression." Too bad that drug addicts had never been introduced to Beethoven!
woww. Out of this world performance
Beethoven's Fifth Symphony...performed the way it SHOULD be performed and conducted by the greatest Conductor.
One of the best rendetitions of this piece!!! Simply incredible!!
I wonder what's the meaning of all this critics based on the tempo. Really, why don't you empty yourselves of your self with all of your ficticious opinions and just listen to the music with all your heart? This is so wonderful and powerful!
perfect. i'm crying
Me too :'-(
So do I
@@tizianofradeani4019 I almost cried when I watched this in person last May. It was like the instruments where whispering into my ears, just for me.
7:34 ~ 8:57 it's so emotional and make me cry
Lenny for ever.❤
Wow..ive heard this 5th my entire life..ive never heard this tempo..and the clarity of several parts that usually get jumbled...very well done
Quelle interprétation magistrale!!! Bravo Mr. Bernstein
It seems that only under Bernstein's lead I can fully appreciate this piece. Otherwise I always tend to hear some of the horrible renditions playing in the back of my mind that have tortured this tremendously famous piece over the years. Thank you, Lenny.
i have the same problem...why i enjoy more with Lennys interpretations than any others?thats the question.
Maybe because the charisma of Leonard....
The Purple Moonwalker Just try Furtwängler. I guarantee a new discovery of Beethoven! But I admit Bernstein is also very well.
Maestro Bernstein was incredibly tactile and had beautiful intepretations of the symphonies he conducted plus the music score was written all over his face in expression. He was also rather attractive!! Maybe this is your answer Ales Japelj.
@@MusikPiratCH Gianandrea Noseda to me is wayyy expressive and fast from the getgo. Furtwängler is too dark and slowww. I think Bernstein is the best
@@mypugisbacon4838 Your taste not mine. For my taste Furtwängler is best. Bernstein is good but no match to Furtwängler! xD
I LOVE this music
👍👍👍
Great version!!!
Bravo to all you musicians!
