I had the great pleasure to sing in this performance as a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. Please change your picture; this is NOT the Orchestra and Chorus of 1967; it is the poor imitation, under Welser-Most. The sound track, is, indeed, our performance of 1967, which we did twice in Severance Hall and then in Carnegie Hall, to which we journeyed every February.

Magnificently played by the Cleveland Orchestra but no repose, overly driven where the music need possess both weight and color. His tyranny on the podium somehow should have led him to more Bass, less treble

In today's world of classical music, Szell would never make it. He couldn't fire principal chairs at his whim. Or anyone else in the orchestra like he used to do in Cleveland.

I think Szell's best recording of the Beethoven fifth is with the Concertgebouw; 1966 rec.Philips.

The performance is superb and the rapport between conductor, orchestra and soloists especially noteworthy. From the orchestra Principal horn Myron Bloom, Principal clarinet Robert Marcellus and Principal Tympanist Cloyd Duff personify the immaculate intonation, phrasing and virtuosity of TCO during the Szell era. Last, imo, this performance validates the impression that as good as Szell's studio recordings were he should be heard live to fully appreciate his genius. With respect to this piece the comparator is the 1969 recording with Oistrakh/Rostropovich. The studio recording is excellent but live we hear from Szell even greater flexibility and vitality. In an interview with either Paul Myers or John Culshaw Szell discussed the differences between playing in front of an audience vs studio recordings. Thank you for posting this concert and I hope you will continue posting any live performances. PS Hearing Robert Conrad's voice for the ages was the fitting conclusion!

Szell' s Concertgebouw Philips/ recording remains the best Beethoven 5 on record. The Concertgebouw has such a more and mellow beautiful sound than the rather harsh and agressive sounding Cleveland Orch.
