I'm sad to hear about Andy Gill's passing, his chops were immense and Entertainment! will always be one of my favourite post-punk albums. Much love and empathy to his family and friends.
I was listening to these guys for 20 years or more before I ever saw what they looked like. It's not what I expected but the dancing is perfect and Andy Gill's technique is cool to watch.
How is it not what you expected, out of interest? They look a bit more "New Wave" than I was expecting, but I guess that was the fashion in 1983 when this was shot. They probably had more of a punk image in 1979.
@@ajs41 I'm not sure I'd given it much thought since the records didn't have pictures. Simplistically I guess like The Clash and/or Billy Bragg? I think it's mainly that that blazer reads very Duran Duran now but of course those were pretty normal clothes at the time. And this is the "I Love a Man in Uniform" era which I possibly didn't get right away the first time I saw this.
Hugo is solid. Not flashy, not a chopsmaster but as he said of himself: I'm not the best drummer but the BEST GOF drummer. Thank you Hugo...you rock on.
In a sort of late/sideways ‘defense’ of this mistaken attribution, I have to say I saw them a number of times, and Sara Lee played ALL the lines of the original/earlier Go4 bassists at least as well as any of them did. RIP Andy, you were a true giant
Entertainment and Solid Gold, love these albums! Deconstruct the bogus institution of popular love songs, Andy Gill states: "These groups and singers think that they appeal to everyone by singing about love, because apparently everyone has or can love," he deadpans. "Or so they would have you believe, anyway."
You better get off the stick, because there's already been plenty of others forming tons of new Post-Punk bands. Maybe you could go in for some Darkwave or Goth, but you're going to have plenty of competition there too, now.
I saw them at the old market in Brighton about fifteen years ago for the fringe. When they come on the singer had a baseball bat and he kept hitting a microwave oven to the beat the oven kept flashing eventually it burst open and an led skipping rope fell out I dived over the mosh pit and grabbed it, I was still in my forties then couldn’t do all that stuff now too unfit. Gotta day they are good the Gang of Four 👍
@@SMPMS8389 I think CompuServe did, though. Granted, it would be rather hard to hear anything through a tinny Commodore 64 or IBM PC speaker - and what, a 9600 Baud modem, if you were lucky?
hate to say but the 80s are.over..but I'll never forget seeing the gang of four in the city.amongst many other dam good groups..I.E.echo - the bunnymen' the cure' joy division' new order& so many more.who have not been given their dues.but that's so U.S.A.let's give thanks to good music....
Band came out to Teragram a coupla years ago and I bought their t-shirt. Fifteen bucks for a t shirt might seem like a lot but they played in person for only 50 bucks. Like reasonably up close.
July 22nd, 1982. Still not sure if I've ever seen a better show. (Though the Clash only 25 days later might have been just that.) "Ooooh, look out you rock 'n' rollers..."
Wow, I fell in love with this album about 15 years ago, I've listened to it probably hundreds of times and I had no idea it was a woman playing bass! Such a great band. All four of them always play exactly the right notes at the right time. It's an impeccable album!
Actually that is not Sara Lee on Bass!!! It is the great and original Dave Allen!! Yes he is fucking awesome! a great talent. Sara Lee is playing in the new form of GOF one original member, guitarist Andy Gill. Also very talented and a huge influence on my guitar playing. Love GANG OF FOUR!!
RIP Andy Gill, post-punk legend.
Keep it alive! Keep coming back! Music hasn’t caught up to this yet!
gotta love the tone out of that P bass
God, played with one guy before with this tone exact powerful tone - also used a P-Bass, it was the best experience ever to have that backing me up.
Sara Lee, vastly underrated.
She's the Jane Entwistle of the genre, and really simply one of the best.
All this time I thought it was a Ric.
Yeah, I love the p-bass sound, just not the feel... despite playing a J-Bass with a P-Bass neck.
I'm sad to hear about Andy Gill's passing, his chops were immense and Entertainment! will always be one of my favourite post-punk albums. Much love and empathy to his family and friends.
Entertainment! is an amazing album, a raw masterpiece.
I have worn out 4 copies of entertainment. One of my all time favorites.
How do you wear out an mp3
İ think it wasn't mp3
Words, guitar, bass and drums - masterpiece that is touching, really.
I wanna start a fucking post punk band.
Me too.
me three
The dream
Well damn you guys thats four of us lets do this shit! lol
Haha hell yeah!
Thank You Andy. Rest Well
R.I.P. Andy Gill. I thank you for your art work, specially with the Gang of Four. You made my life better. I will miss you.
RIP Andy Gill, thanks for the riffs man!
So long Andy... You were a true 'one-off'. Such a cool dude on stage. Legend! R. I. P.
very true, he was such a cool presence on stage....

BCThunderthud yes! Me too!
RIP Andy Gill 🖤
Andy Gill is one of my favorite guitarists
It never gets old.
I love the harmonies that Sara adds to the refrain/outro here. This is a killer version.
Sara Lee on bass. So great to find this.
Ahhhhh…Back in THE DAY💥
Solid drumming
Hes rock solid. I've been trying to drum along to their first 2 records the last 2 weeks, i cant keep up. Hes equally tight live.
Hugo is solid. Not flashy, not a chopsmaster but as he said of himself: I'm not the best drummer but the BEST GOF drummer. Thank you Hugo...you rock on.
REST IN POWER ANDY, Thank you for making my teen years amazing. You were a wonderful person and I hope you're at peace now.
RIP Andy :(
10/13/20 MY LOVE FOR THIS SONG BROUGHT ME HERE TODAY!!!
Great band from back in the day. Always loved this track. It will get you moving every time.
Honestly, the very best bassist of the genre. She was just amazing to watch and listen to back then... and still today.
@MusicalElitist1 lame
@MusicalElitist1 What a burn
Dave Allen was the bassist who played on Entertainment and Solid Gold though. I’m big on Peter Hook (Joy Division) & Simon Gallup (Cure) too.
In a sort of late/sideways ‘defense’ of this mistaken attribution, I have to say I saw them a number of times, and Sara Lee played ALL the lines of the original/earlier Go4 bassists at least as well as any of them did. RIP Andy, you were a true giant
she wasnt on the original recordings of entertainment and solid gold, but she killed it live
This was the most exilerating time of my life on you tube in 2022
One of the best ever bands in ever!
Andy Gill, THANK YOU.

Best live band I ever saw.
thanks for the post
Masterpiece
Andy Gill still plays this with the same energy.
My favourite song by go4. Got loads of their records a very original and tremendous band.
fresh strings 😍
They're even better now. I mean Gill is the only one left but the young singer is amazing. Saw them live last weekend.
Muy adelantados a esa época eran buenísimos
Grande clássico do Gang of four, adoro!
Vi-os em Espinho há muitos anos atrás👌
i though they were a trio. now i love it 4 times more.
They're literally called gang of four haha
Just vicious
Amazing...forever.
Great band! Love this sound.
His danse is amazing! XD
I caught a show by these guys back in '82. Still one of my fave new wave bands.
mindblowing

Live it's a bomb.. 💥
2:48 people used to come to watch band and enjoy the music and not just to appear on instagram. Good times. Love it!
Instagram didn't exist in 81

Don't forget 999, one of the best!😂
Fabulous band 💜🤘🏾
Some random 1979 Album called "Entertainment" was recommended to by my audio streaming service. Track 4 blew my socks off!! they sound fresh AF.
It is one of the most essential post-punk records, how is Entertainment! some random... smh
Andy Gill played with so much venom, loved it
Band came out to Teragram a coupla years ago and I bought their t-shirt.
Fifteen bucks for a t shirt might seem like a lot but they played in person for
only 50 bucks. Like reasonably up close.
Andy Gill is amazing
what a wonderful vid
He's doing the "once in a lifetime" dance at the beginning... maybe Byrne stole everything....
Gran banda

Dave Allen played bass on Entertainment and Solid Gold, Sara Lee replaced him later on.
My favorite part of Entertainment! is the bass. This is fucking painful.
R.I.P. Andy Gill
Wooot i've heard gang of four for a while now and didn't realise they had a female bassist she's pretty good

VERY GOOD!"
Only really got into GoF when I saw them with IDLES last year. Sad to hear about Andy Gill's death
woah mister king has got massive moves
diamonds are 4ever
The bass player used to work in a shop in Kendal and had a bad reputation for not giving the correct change!!!
Maybe she could only count in 3rds and 5ths😂
When Gill was playing this i was fighting in the Falklands what an IDIOT I WAS .
A Gill. A true anti guitar hero.
Yesssssss...... 💛✨💫✨💫✨💫💫
Light years ahead of everyone else
