    this band changed everything, hands down, no comparisons, their live shows were epic every singe time, Andy Gill changed how I heard music forever, RIP, fucking geniuses

      @@pressureworks Au Pairs were great. The first album anyway, not so much the second. There were others too - Delta 5, Fire Engines, Kleenex in Switzerland. Gang of Four were first, and were more committed to avoiding cliche.

    G of4 Solid Gold tour was my 1st gig as a baby faced 17 yo. The Warehouse in Liverpool and shitting myself that I wouldn't get in for being under age. I did and have never forgot it.

      I was privileged to know them all over the years (ex music bizzer). Hugo was the most down-to-earth bloke; far removed from the Univ Leeds Situationism of Jon. Interesting to note how academic philosophy interacts w 'the subjects of their theories'.
      Great Fn band!

    One of the most unique and brilliant bands in rock history. I was lucky enough to see them live up in Chicago in about 1980.

      I wonder if it was recorded on film rather than videotape? And film can be re-scanned later as scanning equipment gets better. Some 70s dramas filmed on 16mm can look great these days if the film survives.

      Older cameras from then were analog and great quality.
      Same with music recording analog is way better

    I remember seeing this on a New Year's Eve 'best of' edition of The Old Grey Whistle Test with my jaw hanging open. I appreciate it even more now. Compelling stuff.

    One of my all-time favorite bands! Great video - thanks for posting. The one thing that was a bit of a revelation to me watching after all these years was just how terrific and dynamic Dave Allen was on bass. I always appreciated his work with Shriekback (his bass line was the spine after all) but he's so much more out front and part of the mix in this one. Jon and Andy were always so riveting on stage I often overlooked Dave - this made him stand out more. And of course Hugo always always drove it home. Brilliant

    Saw them at the Rock Garden in there early days. Amazing and ground breaking with that angular random guitar and punch bass etc. Hugely influential on bands that followed. Andy Gill was underrated as a great guitarist. Lots of gaps between the notes and tension.

    Steve Albini once said Gang of Four were his fave band; to me Shellac sound very similar to GoF given the 25 year gap

      @@canadariots1139 no no no no . sorry but the core original Gang of Four ,is one of if not the best live band ever ,.don't get me wrong Joy Division was a great band ,but live i think GOF was better .much better . JD didn't have a Andy Gill .maybe Ian Curtis was a better front man than Jon King ,and the bass is better than Dave Allen but still no Gill .

    At the beginning the “smack” of the metal is on “4” (as in 1, 2, 3, 4). Counting it in this way from the start is how to decipher this rhythm.
    Also, that drum kit, with the 20” kick drum? Sounds awesome. Saw Hugo place that kit at Perkins Palace in LA, 1982. What an astounding show. REM opened.

      The 4 (or the 1) gets displaced during the reenty at 3:20. Could be a video edit maybe? That 4 takes a lot of concentration.

      He didn't appear to like them much though.
      Andy Gill said that at their first meeting in the studio the band played Paralysed/What we all Want/Cheeseburger and something I can't remember off what became Solid Gold and Douglas reportedly commented that all their songs sounded the same.

    Too gimmicky for their own good. Gets boring fast. There is a talent in being able to write catchy tunes with a good hook. This ain't it.
