The Gang of Four's message and moral authority has only grown in stature and it was f--ing high to start with. Don't remember if this was on their set list in May of 1980 but it was a wowzer: Busta Jones on bass, we're like, who the heck is this guy? And then he just killed it. And Jon's jaw-dropping groove as he half-danced the whole night. Yeesh, to be young again, but you're NEVER too old to be on the right side of something.
karl marx once said that art should be as radical as life itself. gang of four are one of best rock bands of all time. r.i.p. andy gill. you are not forgotten.
GOD DAMMIT this is SO good. I was only 6 when this was happening....although a young GEN Xer, a GEN Xer nonetheless, and this is what I was raised on. Where is this music today? Where are the clubs? Oh, that's right, they need fans. WTF is wrong with you millennials?!?!?!
When I first heard this song, and the drums kicked in, I was like WTF is that... Totally blew my mind. Those drum parts aren’t by any means typical. Special thanks to Wade Wright for suggesting this gem!!!
@@mavjimbo Exactly! After I heard the whole album for the first time, I knew then and there that Solid Gold would be one of my all time favorite albums.
This is one of the the songs that absolutely changed my trajectory in life. A thank you to those from the Lackawana/Buffablo area , from the early '80's. Wow. TSU Trogans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even though Entertainment was an amazing album, I always like Solid Gold better and this was my favorite song on it. Sadly whenever they came to the US it was never close to my city. Rip Andy
I saw them in SO36 in Berlin in may 1981. What we all want was the first song after the break. Burnham walked through the audience, jumped on the stage, and started hitting the tom toms. Unforgettable.
This version of What We All Want from Zagreb in 1981 is my favorite. ua-cam.com/video/tUSw_2jkDjM/v-deo.html I caught the tour a few weeks later in Pasadena.
I heard a story that he did some sessions with Scritti Politti for the Cupid and Psyche album, but they were never used. Couple of songs on that where there are manic guitar breaks... done by Paul Jackson Jr.
Bloody awesome. Someone said my band hada gabd of four vibe. I knew that was a compliment . Have gotten into them and appreciate the style. Fuck. Dig it so hard
Check Out "Blind Illusion" It was Mike Minor, Les Claypool, Larry Lalonde, and Mark Biederman at one point in the early 80's. I thought they kicked ass! Sausage "Riddles are Abound Tonight" was always my favorite Primus side project, even though it was the original lineup Of Les, Tod Huth and Jay Lane. They released it in 1994. IT was the only album other than a demo they released in 1988.
Weird. I saw them open up for Iggy the year before (1980) at the Santa Monica Civic and yes, that was a mindfck. Also, Iggy threw his beer on my hippy friend I dragged to the show. So funny. Strangely, I went to the Iggy palladium show you mention but missed the opening band. I don't think GOF played though as I was a giant fan and would have not missed them. Memory plays strange tricks.
I was one of those guys who always thought that a great guitar ride was the best thing one could do with guitar until I heard Andy Gill. Now those guitar rides bore me. The problem is that I havn't seen anyone who does this as well as Andy Gill.
I'm really amazed by Andy Gill's original style that lacks solos or any traditional method. That doesn't mean I don't like guitarists like Ritchie Blackmore or Brian May. They all have specific qualities of their own.
Busta Jones did it better. Even Dave Allen on the original recording was better than this. Sara Lee is a good bass player but this song deserves more funk from the bass...
Waow!La new wave post punk comme j'aime, plein de guitares saturées,un son brut, avant que certains groupes ne soient récupérés et deviennent de la soupe commerciale.
I loved this as a dark and moody teen, but even more a few years later as 'Cheesy Quaver' (raver) when Westbam sampled it (he was probably in this crowd somewhere): ua-cam.com/video/1PsD5O9ByG0/v-deo.html Thank god for xtc!

This song knocked me to ground the first time I ever heard it
KARL MARX!
RIP Mr Andy Gill. I am glad I witnessed your greatness.
Hugo and Sara ! Great rhythm section!
Thwack bum bump. Thwack bum bump.... Greatest beat ever.
Tribal. Like jungle drums.
Never thought of the beat that way....but yea contender fore the Greatest Beat ever :) !
Thanks Andy for all the great music! I miss you so much. R.I.P. bro.
Nobody, and I mean nobody can touch the sonic landscapes of the incredible Gang Of Four.
Sonic landscapes is such a beautiful and true way to put it!

I know, you're not quite ready for something like that to kick in

Hugo on drums
The ultimate Prog band 💫❤️☝️Gang of Four ❤️
AWESOME
I'll always regret never catching even one gig. Rest In Peace Mr. Andy Gill. Fantastic guitar player.
Yeah me too. RIP
I had the pleasure of seeing them twice, once with the original lineup and once with Sarah Lee on bass. They were badass.
I could fill time with this all day long
This is fucking fantastic!
Rest in peace Andy and thank you for all your great music.
I would pay 100 modern dollars to see this incarnation
Hell yeah! Raw, rowdy and rock steady. These guys (and gal) were the real deal on more levels than one.
This is one of the the songs that absolutely changed my trajectory in life. A thank you to those from the Lackawana/Buffablo area , from the early '80's. Wow. TSU Trogans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite song by them. Saw them live a few times. Always great 👍🏼

Caught them in ‘82 City Gardens in Trenton Nj. Great show!
That is some funky shiiiit
One of the best albums ever made!!! I’ve never heard a more cohesive album. Brilliantly written and recorded.
Sounds as great now as it did back then
@@mavjimbo I agree 100% The lineup on Solid Gold were onto something truly unique. It’s a shame that they disbanded.
True, greatness is greatness. It knows no time period.
OMG, his music was life changing. F,,,ing Miss him. RIP Andy.
miss the 80s,some of the best times of my life was@First Ave,Mpls
11/8/20 MY LOVE FOR THIS SONG BROUGHT ME HERE TODAY!!!
RIP Andy Gill such a loss...
What a song
I dance real hardcore to this song while making my breakfast pancakes
I saw them in SO36 in Berlin in may 1981. What we all want was the first song after the break. Burnham walked through the audience, jumped on the stage, and started hitting the tom toms. Unforgettable.

Great live version of one of my favorite GO4 singles
Andy Gil is an amazing guitarist.
I heard a story that he did some sessions with Scritti Politti for the Cupid and Psyche album, but they were never used. Couple of songs on that where there are manic guitar breaks... done by Paul Jackson Jr.
Brilliant rhythm section
Hugo killin' it!!! How did that relationship ever end?!? THis is incomparable.
Right!!! I wish that the original bass player was sharing this stage.
PURE MUSIC = FANTASTIC
RIP Andy. You were the best.
Amazing storming group!!
great song great beat.....
Damn that was good!
What a band!!!
Brilliance!
Good innings Andy, cheers!
One of my favourite bands; they're actually on tour currently 💜🤘🏾
Thank You❤️❤️❤️😎🦞🎶🎶🐝
Amazing.
Bringing da funk.
Andy Gill is playing a Burns Magpie guitar. I've never seen anyone using one of those before!
And wanted only solid state amps. Plus NO REVERB!
That 83 Sweet spot...
Sweat bang sweat wack sweat boom sweat thud.... . Love it.
Great!
Bloody awesome. Someone said my band hada gabd of four vibe. I knew that was a compliment . Have gotten into them and appreciate the style. Fuck. Dig it so hard
classic! woooo memories!
New Wave as its best...good old times...
Maravilloso
fucking brilliant
R.I.P. Andy Gill.
God I can hear Primus so much here! Even the strange guitar sounds, just like Larry Lalonde!!
Clark J I see what you mean..I hear Jerry Was A Race Car Driver
Gang of 4 started in 1976..Primus in 1984,so when you hear Primus, you are actually hearing the GO4 instead of the other way around
Check Out "Blind Illusion"

Primus > after Stump also
I'd hoped the whole album would be this funky
I thought it was.
I agree. This song is quite representative of the entire Solid Gold album.
@@noahholt7489 great album
seen them live in San Fran in 1985
1980 SF American Indian Center on Valencia. Incredible.
POWERFULL
Imagine these cats opening for Iggy Pop , what a mindfck, Hollywood Palladium 1981
Weird. I saw them open up for Iggy the year before (1980) at the Santa Monica Civic and yes, that was a mindfck. Also, Iggy threw his beer on my hippy friend I dragged to the show. So funny.

mlingus50 no need to imagine, I caught their showcase in '81 at the Country Club in Reseda. Blew us away!
I thought that was the Santa Monica Civic, Iggy's Soldier tour?
I saw them at The Ritz (a relatively small club - about 1500 max capacity in NYC) in, I believe 1982 and 1984. I had a blast! They were soooo good!
Damn
KILLER TRIBAL!!!! Get on the dancefloor bitch....Thanks for the post! GOF most under rated...

yeah Sara.......

Favorite GO4!!
Andy Gill is looking into your soul
Andy Gill produced the debut album by R.H.C.P. Fun fact
Mike Rogers 😮😮
The R.H.C.P. stole everything from Gang of Four
And hated every moment of it.
Badasss
Can anyone recommend some other songs like this?
Post punk with driving basslines
Killing Joke’s first few albums especially What’s This For
The Au pairs ,
Delta 5
wow thx for this whole show, this is GoF paydirt
RIP Andy Gill.
good
Is he angry with those drums?
kurtes cabine gostava disto 🤟
Does anyone know the tab for that bass? I’ve got the gist of it but I think I’m missing some of the filler notes
RIP ANDY :'(
SARA LEE???
Yup. She joined in '81.
1956-2020 - why do 'they' keep taking all the wrong ones?
Awesome groove and Dexter Morgan on the drums...
This is Hugo Burnham the original drummer.
Anyone know what guitar is he using?
Burns Magpie I believe

This wheel spins let me off
It's not the lack of trying
Can't put my finger on it
You can't help being hard up
Can't trust the gods we trusted
Don't think that's any insurance
Could I be happy with something else
I need something to fill my time
Could I be happy with someone else
I need someone to fill my time
This wheel spins letting me off
These doubts and nagging worries
Nothing to work towards
This demon on my back
Preaches the razors cut
The hope that does not fade
Could I be happy with something else
I need something to fill my time
Could I be happy with someone else
I need someone to fill my time
This wheel spins let me off
It's not the lack of trying
