  • In this video we ask the question "Should you buy a Cheap Spray Gun" or an expensive one. I will demonstrate on 2 different cars and 2 different guns the cheap Spray gun is a Carmix spray gun with a 1.4mm fluid tip and needle used for Basecoat Colour Power Red on a Hyundai Getz and the top line gun is a DeVilbiss GTI Pro lite with a te20 Air Cap (Tekna Pro Lite USA) used for clear on a Toyota Corolla.

There can be no doubt that a cheap gun in skilled hands will out perform an expensive gun in inexperienced hands.

Andrew Wilson the gun man knows how to spray.. and knows how to set a gun up. If you watch the video he says he dialed that cheapo in the best he could and was just getting mediocre results from it. A quality gun will require less work to get a good finish as a cheap gun requires more work for a less than acceptable finish in my opinion.

I have in the past purchased the most expensive gun possible at a "Bargain" tool supply store only to end up sanding and spraying a job over!!! The cost involved with material, time, and anti-depressant medication proved to more than cover the cost of a quality spray gun!!! Save yourself the aggravation and pay close attention to this video, it will defiantly improve the quality of your finished product, even for a beginner that has watched several tutorial videos and taken a little time to practice your technique. thanks for the awesome videos Mr. Gundude.

110% with you on this one mate, I have a Workquip and its a solid gun for basecoat, however the clearcoat is a mess with the same gun. I just did a spot repair on a bumper bar, and the clearcoat orange peel was a wreck. Resprayed the whole bumper using my new Devilbiss GTi Pro Lite for clear and it made a massive difference!

Years ago, late 80's, I had the opportunity to work with a small group of BASF technicians/advisors, "using a cheap or even old paint gun for primer" was the topic. While applications varied greatly from one use to another (using the same loaded gun) the proof in the pudding remains even today. How much product was applied, how well did it sand, how much effort was put into getting it flat for paint, and the big one, could I have done any better with a better gun? Inevitably, the answer is always a resounding YES.

DIY here, I’ve had cheap guns and bought too many overall haha I’m currently happy with Devilbiss flg5 1.4 base clear direct gloss epoxy, and Impact Air Gunsa 2.0, I like knowing I have decent quality and finishes the impact lays primer nice so figure less sanding etc. 🤘🏻 Gunny try out that impact for primer it’s a lot better than the standard air gunsa 💪🏼

Gunman i used a harbor freight purple gun to refinish a hood and bumper on an 08 honda accord. Out the gate i noticed it used a lot more material and needed about 38 psi to lay down in a decent manner The fan couldn't open very wide w/o streaking; I probably got it open to about 6 inches comfortably. With that being said it took maybe 30 min longer than it wouldve if i had used the iwata because it needed a longer flash time from the amount of material going on. But on the bright side it perfected the look of that slight orange peel honda has from the factory and didnt have a terrible finish. For anyone else thinking of using this spray gun considering the strain you put on your compressor, the finish, the material thatll be wasted and most importantly your time it isnt worth using daily but to paint one or 2 jobs itll do the trick but the buffer will be your best friend

Excellent video showing the difference. Besides the lifespan is like night and day as well. Everyone looking at the cheap spray guns should watch this to see the difference. I ended up painting my entire 2dr car I built with a touch up size HVLP cheap gun. It stretched my expensive base coat paint to probably double over the cheap full size gun. If I was doing it for a living I would go DeVillbiss or an Iwata in a heartbeat.

That Orange Peel looks just like most brand new cars these days or even better still.
I know here in germany, painters have a hard time replicating the orange peel from new BMW or other brand cars when they go in for a repair, as most good spray guns produce a much better finish.

JUST BOUGHT A PROLITE! They are black here in the US and Canada. It shows up in the mail in a few days :D Got the HV30 and TE20 cap, and 1.2,1.3,1.4 setup. Can't wait to use it as an everday HS clear gun!! No more shop guns for me!! Already using my own older gti for water-base, and a cheap shop gun for primer. I figured it's good for a new upcoming painter to be buying good quality guns. Thanks for all the recommendations!

Been watching a few vids and been very helpful. many thanks.
I used a £12.99 gun to spray a friends classic mini inside and out. turned out ok but it was a ground up build and was the best place to save a lot of money as it was starting to get very expensive. so where as a body shop quoted over 1800 pounds I managed it for 100. it turned out ok but he really uses the car and it doesn't need to be show winning to rally in Scotland. haha.
    thanks for some great advice.

Christ, I just stumbled on this one as it is quite old. It would have saved me a great deal of pain and not to mention expense in paint. I bought a workquip HVLP set from Hare & Forbes with 1.4/1.8/2.0 nozzle sets. I am using the 1.4 to apply base and clear with disastrous results. Very bad orange peel of any thing I paint, piss poor fan pattern. Was about to go back to my old 1980's arnold suction gun but thought I would ramp up the pressure on the workquip gun instead as I had already tried from 20-28PSI at my Iwata regulator. So I went to 35PSI today and finally got a good result on my base, but it cost me a great deal of expensive paint in the process. Wish I had come across this vid earlier.
I have just purchased a new Devilbiss finishline which I hope comes this coming week.
Love your work.............keep it up please.

I'm using carmix gun with acryl paints and it have worked very well in random use. Actually for that price (25eur = 30usd) I can't hope more. It's true you cant get perfect gun 30usd but for that money quality is very good. Anyway thanks for this comparison and other films, it is very nice to watch professional that gives advices to others =)

I don’t believe in buying cheap tools, but I don’t think you have to buy the most expensive to achieve a high quality professional paint job, even for a beginner like me. I bought a finish line Devilbiss spray gun kit. Comes with standard quart gun with 1.8 needle for primers and a 1.3 needle for color and clear coat. and and a detail gun with a 1.3 needle. Payed about $145 and it produces fantastic professional results for the home garage painter as long as you know how to setup your mixture and air pressure properly, you will get a Zero orange peel finish that looks like a mirror. I have gotten incredibly good results with this kit. Of course your work piece must be properly prepared and clean throughout the process. Also, a cheap homemade spray booth can be made from PVC piping and plastic sheeting with a common shop vac pulling air out with aid from a power router that controls the shop vac suction. A small air inlet is open at the opposite side of the spray booth so air is moving through the booth not causing too much negative pressure within the spray booth. After you are finished, just pull off the plastic sheeting and disconnect all the PVC pipe and elbow fittings and pack them away in a small space. Instant spray booth for cheap!

Very useful. It's a tough subject to get intelligent, unbiased information on.
Many people have predisposed views based more on trendiness and brand snobbery, (fanboys I've heard them called) and can't tell you exactly what you get with the big price tag besides perceived status.
Out of necessity, I've used cheaper guns for years, and often wondered why I can't get certain paints (usually clearcoats w/hardener) to lay down without a lot of fooling around getting the reduction and temp just right. Even then, you have to spray on the ragged edge of running, constantly making adjustments for edges and vertical transitions. I often doubted my ability, and it just sucked the enjoyment out of it.
Now that I'm doing it as a hobby, and started experimenting with more exotic processes, like candies, I find my 'old faithful' mid-priced guns are just that, mid-performance. Fine for painting machinery, and an occasional collision repair (where you often have to match the factory peel), but I find exactly the limits you mentioned. I cannot get the paint flow down to a lean enough mixture to fog on candy dyes without getting a spotty, uneven droplet size. When set to where the gun is working well, the paint delivery is way to aggressive.
A lot of folks that argue the cheap guns are just as good aren't pushing the limits, consequently don't see the difference. (I used to be one)
While you can do a decent job with a decent performing cheapie (they are NOT all the same), it's generally harder to pull off, and even 1 do-over caused by a gun issue eats enough cash to justify a better gun.
Turns out the gun DOES matter. If you're painting for money or doing fine or complex work, it matters even more.
I've learned a lot in the past few weeks, and your video put it all together for me.
    Thanks, Scott
PS when reading down, I see you apparently had a demonstration of the syndrome I was speaking of. It makes you afraid to ask this question in a lot of places.

I have learned on an airbrush and realize that there is a learning curve. I can now do the same work through a 22.00 master airbrush as a 200.00 20/20 once I figured out thinning and what the brush pressure should be set at for each brush. Next up 12.00 spray gun to paint a vw bug and apply true flames should be interesting if I can pull it off.

The right tool for the job, if you provide or want to provide good quality than simply put use good tools. If you are good at what you do than you know a good tool will only provide a better finished job. But as mentioned if all you need is a cheap gun for jobs around home etc. then go get a cheap hardware store gun.

I was using my DeVilbiss SRi Pro guns for basecoat and clear for the smart repairs until they started to play up, I'm told it's going to cost over £100 to fit new parts to each gun so Iv been using cheap shit £15 ebay guns and to be honest you can achieve really good results if you know what your doing, the down side is they wear out quickly and you know it's a cheap gun just by the weight and balance of the gun. What I have noticed is with a good gun is the finish is usually better than the original finish but with the cheap £15 gun it seems to go on like the original paint even though you might have to machine polish it sometimes. I think in my case it helps having over 40 years experience spraying cars.

I had no idea about the quality of spray guns, except for when I purchased one from a really inexpensive tool store local to me, or where I used to live called Harbor Freight. There's really nothing of high quality in the store, and the only thing that's still working form there is the compressor I purchased about 6 years ago. I know that if you buy cheap you buy twice, or thrice. I've since stopped doing that as much as possible. To me $200 for a good spray gun to paint small parts (what I'm going to do) is definitely worth it.

I got a Sealey 741 HVLP. Its a bit better than the ultra cheap one from common hardware store. I also experience that you hard to put a lot of paint on to get a decent orange peel. To the point were might get runs. I could understand it, your video confirm this. Yes, I also had to use much pressure, like 35 psi. I am just a hobbyist, so I think 500 dollar is a bit much for a spray gun, since I do maybe 1 car a year. But still I consider getting one, because I want a perfect finish.

You made the Carmax look like a champ in the BC/CC application...Good Job! This video is an excellent head-to-head review of the results using a cheap (generic design) spray gun versus an moderately expensive (refined design) spray gun. Here in the U.S., the Carmax design is a dead ringer for the Central Pneumatic HVLP design available at Harbor Freight. I have found that this "generic" gun works well for Polyester and 1K high-build primers. However, I've found that you have to really work to get a flat finish (Base / Clear ) with this style of spray gun as well. Thanks for showing us the difference versus just telling us that there is a difference.

I want to be spraying some hammerite color (renovating some machinery). I understand it contains silicone so my plan is to a) spray it outside and b) get a cheap dedicated spray gun for hammerite only.
I am also thinking of making a setup consisting of a pressure gauge like you are using in the video but also add a water / oil separator right under the gauge. And fit a quick connect on the top, so I can just flip this setup between spray guns. I mean if I get any more... Don't really do much spraying.
I understand separation works better the further away it gets from the compressor and right at the gun is as far away as you can get. And with my setup I can't run a bunch of feet of hose or pipe before adding a water separator.

these are awesome videos you do, and they have answered something that was eating at me, I'm no spray painter , but have done a few cars in my time, back 20 or so years ago I did reasonably good jobs only used acrylics back then,a couple of years ago a mate wanted his body kit sprayed in two pak. I could not believe the massive amount of orange peel I was getting mind you he bought me a real cheap hvlp gun. I got so disgruntled that I couldn't put a flat coat down I ended up buying a cheap iwata thinking it will be OK because of the brand...I was so wrong..orange peel to the max..I've really been put off 2 pak thanks to these results...but I see some if the settings are different to what I tried and now I'm building a project car for my son, I have a renewed faith in giving it a spray job..fingers crossed, so thanks for posting these vids you do

I have had pretty good success with the devilbiss knock off the Red Velocity VRM not bad for the price but still not as good as the trusty devilbiss GTI Pro Lite.

Excellent informative video. Much more useful than those guys who blather on about nothing specifically useful or practical. Just bought a Devilbiss GTI620g after using a cheap gun much like the one you used here, for primer coat. Don't want that finish for the base or clear, even though I'm only a hobbyist.

Awesome thanx for doing this I really wanted to see what you could produce with a cheap gun more for curiosity as well as to show you do really get what you pay for . I will be picking up my pro lite in the next week or so . I will say bud amazing job with the cheap gun nice work as always mate

Great video that answered my questions. I do Hydrographics and use a cheap Chinese spray gun and with the Hydrographics it hide ALLOT so it always did the job for me. I am now starting to get into Spectra Chrome so I have to now make my Orange Peel pretty much non existent. So looks like I'm off to pickup a good quality gun tomorrow and get to practicing!

i'm ok with getting another clearcoat and and sand it down a bit, put i consider just keep myself to spraycans (only got like 2-3 project a year, and its not even in automotive areas) but still informative if i consider upping to a spraygun. in a dilema where i cant afford my project if i buy the gun and compressor, but cant get my project painted if i dont, lmao. i guess i'll throw a piggybank somewhere and start saving up for some high end stuff as i rarely see mid end stuff being worth it ^^ and i think you can agree on that!

The cheap gun looks identical to the Tool Force A-C1 I used for primer. It seems to have been branded by many companies.

Good video pal. I totally agree with all your comments about the cheap guns. I've probably thrown 5 or 6 of them away over the years and find that you've got to work a lot harder to get a decent finish. Probably no bid deal for the DIY enthusiasm who might want to flat and polish their lacquer for a show finish but I wouldn't want to lay down a coarse metallic with one of them!! As far as durability goes the best I've got out of a cheap gun is about a dozen jobs then they start to leak or seize up. My Devilbiss guns on the other had are practically bullet proof in comparison.

Hi Gunman, I noticed on an earlier video you used an Iwata az3 hte 2 spraygun. I have a 1.8 and 1.3mm versions and would be interested to see your opinion on performance and setup if you get chance. The reviews that I have seen are generally good but a once over by you would be invaluable. Regardless, your videos are always informative and a " No bull" approach to your trade and I see from comments you have a respect among your peers...kudos to you!

Thanks man, I do plan on doing a vid on the az3 but I only have the 1.8mm so I'll only be able to review that one, its just about getting the time to make it as I'm such a busy man.

My experience with 20$ 1.3 gun from TecTake:
    - Bottom thread was machined very bad (took time to seal it with PTFE tape)
    - Took me a lot of time to dial it in ; to get a decent finish
    - Hard to get the right pressure, needs at least 3 bar, in the HVLP pressure range results are just horrible
    - High air volume consumption, had to wait again and again for my cheap compressor
    - Time consuming job to keep it clean and working
But: *Decent finish*, not perfect but stunning for 20$
tl;dr: Cheap gun works, but it is inefficiently and time burning.
Wish I had bought a quality gun in the beginning, saving all the time & paint.

It's quite clear I'm in the right place. Glad I found this!
I build and fly scale model airplanes, and slowly getting to the point where I want to build airplanes from scratch. Which means I'm moving away from ARF (almost ready to fly) type planes. So naturally, I would want to paint the finished build, instead of applying plastic shrink wrap film (Monokote).
***So as a newbie to air compressors, airbrushes & spray guns (I own none), what's the point and\or difference between using plastic paint cups & metal cups? I think I see the advantage of plastic cups because one can view the paint level, so I guess my real question should be what's the point of metal cups?***

That's not a $100-150 gun, that's a regular hobby gun you can get in double and triple deals w/ cases in different sizes (both guns, nozzle and tank) for $35-75, priced at $20-30 individually. If you paid over $100 for that gun i'm pretty sure there's a seller somewhere deserving a bonus!

i have the same gun off ebay for 30 posted with a 2.0mm cap that came with it and to be fair it runs about 40 45 psi weirdly hight and i agree u can get a good ok reasonable finish like the gets but retired it to primer only and use a gun i got a 1.4 cap setup for colour and clear and love both guns for there own reasons but its not like u cant do a reasonable job with it. if u use fast hardner u can get a good thick coat on of clear with a reasonable finish

I am thinkin of getting a semi cheap gun just so when I do little projects I don't have to keep forking out 50 bucks to do an Epoxy 2k primer and a 2k clear in a can.. having a one shot then throw away sucks.. I need to be able to use just a little at a time!

Im in the us and buy the cheap harbor freight gun for 15 bucks lol. They shoot perfect for me. Never any orange peel at all and always looks like glass.
But I agree you need to mess with settings to get a nice gun. They are basically replica of sata and devilbiss.
The gun itself has been good for about 5 years I only use it about 5 times a year though
honestly the paint doesn't look bad and their really is very little orange peel, way less than an oem paint job anyhow

Have u tried the Voylet spray gun, tried it today, it sprays better than my Sata Eco line 1.0 which is a piece of junk to be honest. I used the Voylet today for primer and going to actually use it for base and clear tomorrow. 30 Dollar gun...

Question.. Its my first time starting out to learn how to repair my own cars paint. I wanted to achieve the best possible finish. What kind of gun would i need to buy and what would be the price range i could expect to pay around? Your work is absolutely amazing!
