- In this video you get to join me in the cockpit of the Boeing 737 and see what it's like to land in Madeira from the Pilots point of view (POV).
Landing in Funchal Madeira (LPMA / FNC) is no small task.
It is probably one of the most difficult airports to land at with an airliner.
This landing was my first time experiencing the approach from the first officer seat.
Approach and landing in Funchal has to be done by the captain since there is special training required to be allowed to land at Madeira Airport.
The visual approach is flown manually and is quite demanding since you encounter strong winds coming over the island.
This Video is a few years old when I was still flying the Boeing 737 for an other airline.
As always sit back and enjoy!

Currently in Flight school at a university. I watch vids like this to prepare for what is to come. Thank you for sharing your experience 💯
Enjoy flight school mate 🙌✌️
In which university?
@@Pascalklrwere you from??
How much do you pay?
What uni courses are there for pilot training
Being a passenger to Funchal is just incredible, really shows the skills of the pilots who fly you there, everything I've gone I've never even noticed the crosswinds, but I know how hard the approach is
Fun to see a 737 video, a330 is awesome but 737 is my favorite :) cool video!
Oh lux is here 😭🙏
Flown into FNC several times now, including once with winds very close to the limit. That time, we had to divert to PXO for more fuel after holding for ages. Credit to the pilot for getting us down safely (few others made it that day).
Hi Pascal, I've tried to land at Funchal with a very strong cross wind a couple of times on my flight simulator (MSFS with VR headset) and found that the turbulence over the runway is really tricky to handle. It's great to see how to do it properly for real. Nice landing !
My favourite landing to do on flight sim. Great video!!
That’s awesome! Thank you 🙌
Wow what a hand book approach and landing, crossing threshold at 50ft is very perfect.❤❤
I respect the pilot who flies with his tie on
Looks incredible. Currently a student pilot at 15 and I can't wait to fly a 737 one day. Also, I appreciate the 60FPS video.
Another amazing one pascal. Thank you!
My pleasure🙌
Perfect touchdown. I’m jealous.
Wow nice Approch with the YC kn Funchal. I think its sad that you arent flying for TUI anymore, i would love to see more of your 737 Landings and this Landing was butter smoth
I do miss flying the 737 from time to time 🤙
@@Pascalklrhow many passengers his take?
Amazing to see a video of you landing in Madeira. I sailed my little 30 foot lyacht from the UK to the Caribbean in 1992 and one of my stops en route before the Canary Islands and our Atlantic crossing was Madeira. We approached in thick overcast weather. I had no idea there was an airport perched up there on the island until as we approached we saw or heard an airliner approach to land and then with a roar of the engines do a go around. 😮 . Since those sailing days and 70,000 miles logged I got into flying and have 600 hours now. Only paragliding and paramotoring, but flying is flying! 😊
Goosebumps! Epic Video Pascal!
Thank you so much 🙌
I was on a flight to Funchal last year when there were severe winds coming from the worst possible direction. On the approach, just before the right turn, we actually turned left because there was too much wind. Everyone was disappointed, but after that manoeuvre the plane suddenly went through what I'm guessing was wind shear, because the plane felt like it dropped very quickly for just a few seconds. That was a good indicator that it was indeed not safe to land at that time :-p Landed on Porto Santo to refuel, had 1 more failed attempt in Funchal, and then flew back to Lisbon where we got stuck for 2 nights before finally making it to Funchal. Fun times!
Beautifully done. I try this in X-Plane 11 sim often and it's a challenge since the first half of the runway is uphill, so your flare has to be a slight climb to not bang it in.
Wow that looked to be butter 🧈 well done sir !
Wow very good landing from the captain!
love the Vids Pascal, You are my favorite aviation youtuber and one day i hopefully become a pilot myself. Keep up the awesome work
That’s great to hear thank you so much 🙌✌️
Good job, i’m from Madeira Island 🏝️
I like your video. greetings from Kazakhstan 🖐
Finally! New video from our favorite captain❤️
exellent landing ✈
Thanks for always giving us Such an Detailed look into the Pilots Life. Amazing Video as Always Pascal!
Damn, that was super cool. Thanks for the insight!
50 avobe the threshold. Perfect landing.
My man, those were the days!❤
AMAZING, Hope to see more
I really love your videos btw
That's great to hear 🙌
Like a hot knives through butter 👌🏻
Nice to see og pascal love it!
turning to final at 500 feet with 737 .. not many can handle .. much respect
I had goosebumps man
🙌
Amazing mate!
Thank you 🙌
@@Pascalklr no problem! You are such a great role model and are so helpful lol
Amazing landing 😅! Not easy to land at Funchal
As a pilot what do you think about the wind limits being raised here? Great video!
Wow Thats cool🎉
Thank you 🙌
Perfect
planning to be a commercial pilot, and im working on my solo pilots license :)
Just an suggestion if it's possible, if you could lower your cam it would look fantastic as we can see more an the cockpit. Thanks
Really good video. Quick question - how is this filmed? did you use meta glasses or a gopro?
We landed there over thirty years ago before the runway was extended, do not want to return
Great video, just wondering how much extra fuel do you carry to Funchal? I'd assume you guys would be budgeting for at least one missed approach and extra holding fuel.
Beautiful landing, but the a330 satisfy me more 😁
Echt schönes Video, bitte mehr Content 🙃, kleine Frage bist du schonmal nach Mombasa geflogen?
Viele Dank! Ja bin ich 🙌✌️
@@Pascalklr Echt!?Sehr cool ,könntest du vielleicht wenn du das nächste mal nach Mombasa fliegst dazu ein Video machen?
When I’m in the car playing VR chat flight simulator
Hey Pascal one question you used to fly for Tui so cool love the tail logo and have you ever flown on one of their special liveries like riu or blue livery ??
5:44 twenty ten butter 🧈🧈🧈🧈
The rise of the internet pilot!
Super cool ✮😎✮ I wanna be a pilot😂🎉
Wow!!!
What a landing. Just wanted to know you were controlling the aircraft from the yoke? Or was it on HDG mode? 😊
The autopilot system was disengaged at 4.22 point in the video. After that the landing was made manually.
First rule in videography: do not move the camera much.
Great Video, why is landing gears so early? thank You!
Nice
0:44 you mean, intercept the 211 radial INBOUND. Aren't radials outbound by definition?
👏👏👏👏
Is it possible to approach the runway from the other opposite side RWY 05 if the wind turns around? You already have the challenging curling and gusting winds that come sideways from the mountains what can cause already challenging situations. But if already battling against the wind, do you still need to approach the runway at the same direction RWY 23 even if the wind comes primary from the back? Because if you get a gust of wind from the front it will pull up because you have a short timr more airflow. But wind form behind will cause a windshear. And you don't want to approach a runway that starts and ends at a cliff and is partly platform.
So coming in low at minimum airspeed, is it safe to land at this airport with already unpredictable wind from the mountains if you only can land from the RWY23 direction?
Bro made landing EASY in 4295 ways
I was now watching all the current holing at funchal on flightrafar24 haha
What a coincidence😅🙌
I’m thinking on doing a funded programme when I’m old enough but then moving to British airways once I’ve been working long enough (if it’s a different airline). Is this a good idea or are you better staying with the airline you are already working with?
Does the Foehn effect has any repercussion when landing there ?
Why localizer indicator turn from right if the runway is from the left?
this is so cool! do you have any advice for me wanting to be a pilot? im 15
1 question, do you think a mpl license would be a good start since you can start flying commercial almost directly after and then after meeting the requirements for an atpl license I would upgrade to that?
Eurowings Discovery has 737? Bist du deutsch?
same like my sim :D
Which is better, enroll to university or going straight to flight school?
For what reason is the flight director deactivated?
Why is the approach turn to rw5 so tight?
About to start flight school at The University of North Dakota in the United States. Any tips for flight school?
I think they aeronautical authorities should make this approach more round instead of almost like the shape of the letter L.
Nice , I’m going to try this approach in MSFS 2020 in VR , probably in a business jet airplane , LearJet or HondaJet as I don’t like big commercial jet airliners ! 😜😉😀
0:38 das ist Radial 031 🙃
No Radials Radiate out. So It's radial 211 but the inbound course will be 031 as you said 🙂
you first sentence is right, but it radiates out in direction 031 so it‘s Radial 031 with inbound course being 211 😉
Radial 031. Course 211.
when you put down the gears, you put the eng selecetor thing on "Cont" what does it do?
It provides continuous ignition on the selected igniter. It's done for take-off and landing to decrease the probability of an engine flame-out at low altitude.
love the vids, what brand are your epaulets?
Thank you m, good question we get them from our company ✌️
I'm a high school student and wanna become a pilot but someone told me that it is very difficult to be employed. Is that true that there are no opportunities
Is it just the perspective, or was this landing a little fast?
Yes 150 knts for a 737 is a little fast but not too bad
Who is the airline
do you fly for TUI?
Yes
My favourite airport, always a good day out. Personally I would have disconnected the autopilot over the VOR to enable me to get a feel for the weather conditions, that being said I have been told of pilots flying to final on autopilot giving themselves no chance to get a feel for the days conditions.I guess the methods you prefer depends on if you are an autopilot manager or pilot.
Why are you hiding the paper and pilot's face ?
so why not descend straight into it?
terrain doesn’t allow for it as it would be too steep to just fly straight in
scary honestly

I want to be a comercial pilot.because of irregular hours pilots work i am scared of that i will not be to see my family properly. What do you think about it
Wide body of good airlines are not too hectic at high post like first officer or captain based on seniority you can get 7-8 day off a month at home, not consecutive but its very good
Why you have hidden pilots face like thi
I have flown into and landed at Funchal 60+ times, totally trouble free. This video is not the best example ! Right hand seat very nervous and jerky, commands and actions slow. Try Ronaldsway IOM or Ibiza with a strong Tramontana or Karlsruhe with mist and wind . To get the real experience of FNC , put on a video of T A P pilots !!
Is that a hairline fracture in the windscreen? 😅
Vacating by Bravo in a 737 is Impressive! Strong headwind? 😉
Deondre Hills
Maggio Walk
Pilots blurred, video over.
Without wind it was a lot, but certainly not difficult to land the plane
me who has landed at this airport before

4:21 ☠
I did not see the left pilots hands Was this a manual or automatic landing?
The autopilot system was disengaged at 4.22 point in the video. After that the landing was made manually.
Why is there so many options on the dashboard there should only be a control stick and a brake pedal
