Rich, you guided the discussion masterfully with exceptional timing and clarity. Even he felt affected afterwards. I have come to know the actor better now just as an actor but a real person who earned his stripes like you by hard work, personal courage, and dedication to their craft. A++ dude

I really enjoyed watching and listening, learned a lot more about Joel, been a fan of his for a few years now. It's proved what I've known about him, in that he's just an awesome person, an amazing human being. He's always real and not fake in any way, like a lot of celebrities out there.

Going with the flow doesn’t mean you sit back passively and expect everything to work out. Going with the flow means you don’t cause yourself stress by fighting changes that are out of your control.

00:30 🎭 Finding purpose in acting led Joel Kinnaman to face panic attacks before performances, overcoming inner demons that hindered his craft.
02:23 🌍 Joel reflects on the changing cultural landscape in Saudi Arabia, attending a film festival where movies and music were illegal just six years prior.
05:57 🎬 Working on a dialogue-free film by John Woo challenged Joel's acting, requiring heightened emotional expression through subtle gestures and facial cues.
07:47 🎥 Absence of dialogue in a film heightened the necessity for genuine emotional expression, pushing Joel to intensify his inner dialogue and facial storytelling.
09:20 🤫 Joel initially considered going completely silent during the film shoot but abandoned the idea, realizing the necessity of collaboration and leadership on set.
13:29 🎭 Taking the lead in a film involves setting a positive tone on set, recognizing the impact of one's demeanor on the entire crew's morale and performance.
14:10 💪 Despite cinematic expectations, Joel emphasizes that the physical transformation for a film role is more about diet than solely training.
17:21 🥋 Choreographing realistic fight scenes involves balancing planned sequences with improvisation, aiming for authenticity amidst stunt performers' carefulness.
19:35 🚗 Joel learned drifting for the film but relied on a skilled driving double for more complex shots, combining his efforts with professional expertise.
20:41 🏋‍♂ Joel tailors his fitness routines based on character requirements, adjusting his physique for specific roles, emphasizing versatility in his approach.
22:15 🏋 Losing weight for a role, Kinnaman trained in Jiu-Jitsu and followed a fasting routine of 18 to 20 hours daily for almost eight months.
23:36 🎥 His film, "Nighthawks," experienced release issues due to a strike, leading to minimal promotion and a quiet release.
24:57 🎬 Working with Nicolas Cage in a car-centric movie provided a firsthand experience of Cage's unique, intense, and genius acting style.
26:30 🏆 Joel admires Nicolas Cage's dedication to unique, extreme characters, describing his acting choices as fearless and impactful.
28:46 🤪 Filming with Cage involved spontaneous and wild improvisations, making it challenging at times to keep up with unexpected actions.
31:22 📺 "The Killing" marked Joel Kinnaman's introduction to the American audience, making a distinct impression despite initial controversy.
35:07 🎬 Despite cancellations and mixed reception, "The Killing" found intense viewer support after its streaming release, making Kinnaman's character memorable.
38:44 💡 Joel prioritizes the director, character, and story equally when choosing projects, emphasizing the importance of creating a certain level of quality.
40:58 🤔 The decision-making process in selecting roles shifts as an actor's career progresses, focusing on legacy, impact, and avoiding stagnation in characters.
43:06 🎭 Choosing roles that challenge and slightly unsettle him is crucial for Joel Kinnaman to avoidartistic stagnation and to keep evolving as an actor.
44:03 🎥 Directors like Tarantino and the Safdie Brothers top Joel Kinnaman's wishlist for future collaborations in the film industry.
44:32 🎬 Rob Pattinson's career path diverged from typical Hollywood; he chose unconventional roles over mainstream superhero movies, embracing film school-like experiences.
46:09 🇸🇪 Cultural differences: Swedes have a stoic approach to life, often openly expressing feeling down, which clashed with Hollywood's expectation for upbeat attitudes.
50:57 🌍 Admiration for the American Spirit: Embracing others' success was valued, contrasting Sweden's competitive environment.
52:59 🤝 Transitioning from unsupportive friendships, Kinnaman shifted focus to friends who celebrated success, breaking from a competitive circle in Sweden.
54:11 ✈ Seven-year travel plan: Kinnaman intended to explore and work globally before settling on a career, inspired by family's travel tradition.
56:38 🎭 Acting passion ignited: Kinnaman experienced a transformative moment while performing a monologue, realizing his potential in acting.
57:58 💡 Life experiences as assets: Adversity and trauma became pivotal elements Kinnaman channeled into his acting, recognizing their value.
01:03:05 🌊 Endurance challenges: Kinnaman engaged in extreme events like the ÖTILLÖ swimrun, Ultraman, and multiple Iron Man races, testing physical limits.
01:07:37 🌍 Reflecting on Scandinavian happiness, Joel Kinnaman attributes it partly to people's connection with nature, regular time outdoors, and lower expectations, creating a safety net in society.
01:09:25 🎭 Overcoming stage fright and panic attacks during acting school became a turning point for Kinnaman. Facing adversity, he created a challenging performance, leading to newfound confidence and changing his career trajectory.
01:19:37 🌟 Joel Kinnaman's "superpower" lies in his refusal to accept failure, facing adversity, and confronting fears head-on, a mentality that extends beyond acting into various life aspects.
01:21:29 🚀 Kinnaman's instinct to tackle uncomfortable situations extends beyond his career, shaping his approach to relationships and personal growth, emphasizing the value of confronting discomfort for progress.
01:27:24 🧳 Maintaining groundedness amid fame involves having authentic friendships, avoiding the "Fame Game," and steering clear of the pursuit of social media validation, which previously led to feelings of inadequacy and anxiety for Kinnaman.
01:30:47 📱 Social media algorithms often amplify insecurities, driving unnecessary comparisons and pressures.
01:31:40 🎭 For actors, maintaining a level of privacy can enhance the mystique of their performances, akin to Tarantino or Daniel Day-Lewis.
01:33:56 💡 Embracing social media isn't always necessary for career success, especially when it doesn't align with one's personality or strengths.
01:35:18 🎭 Aspiring artists should commit fully without a plan B, understanding the high risk but potentially rewarding journey.
01:39:42 🌟 Recognizing the top-tier competition and the challenges ofan acting career, aiming to reach a certain level of success or reevaluate the path.
01:41:06 🎭 Success in acting isn't solely about fame but falling in love with the craft, dedicating oneself to the art, and honing skills relentlessly.
01:42:43 🌟 Persistence, hard work, and talent tend to eventually lead talented performers to success, though the journey might involve rejection and uncertainty.
01:45:18 🎙 Long-form conversations like podcasts offer valuable insights and self-reflection, providing an opportunity for personal growth and discovery.
