What a beautiful comment, this view is aligned with an inner peace about life and the way the world works. It reminds me of the Pema Chodron quote from When Things Fall Apart: "We think that the point is to pass the test or overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don't really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It's just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy."
20 minutes in. Rich is the interviewer, nominally. But in the way the discussion has unfolded, he's had to confront a lot of his own resistance to experience. He's had to be the one to answer uncomfortable questions. And it's fascinating how his typical traits of being articulate and eloquent are being picked on by Julie as a protective cover on a more sensitive layer. Clearly, there's only so much of their private lives they can reveal on air, but it's fascinating seeing Rich talk about stuff without talking about it.
Allowing yourself to be this vulnerable in front of an audience is remarkable and such a gift. You guys are amazing and thank you so much for this episode. It's so rare for people to break out of their patterns of routine and avoidance, and rarer still to recognize it and talk about it.

I agree Rich. I have been happily married for 36 years and my husband and I have raised three successful kids. We are very close but I feel we need to have our own down time after giving everything we have to our partner and children. As empty nesters this is the time to celebrate our dedication and do something for ourselves. It's freedom and you deserve a little space of your own.
I disagree with the podcasts with his wife are his best. He has such good podcasts that really go deep and have such deep topics. You basically say this in no way comes close to the talks with his wife. No way. Keep going Rich. You are a really good interviewer and you bring very important topics to your table.
Very worthwhile episode. Julie has a lot of love and patience!! I don't mind her talking about her cheese, even though I can't afford it. Her passion makes it interesting to listen. I really don't think the episodes with Julie are the best, although I do love them and I'm glad they appear now and then. The best ones for me are those that offer crucial information on a wide range of topics, help me understand human beings better, and/or guide me to make my own life healthier, richer. happier, more compassionate, etc....
I originally got into the Rich Roll podcast as my husband has addiction issues - with alcohol and cannabis. He's making progress but recovery is not a linear path for sure. The amount of vulnerability Julie is asking from Rich is extremely full on, he's a very special person to be able to take on this level of exposure of his soul and inner being and what a journey he's had in his life from his own dark days of addiction. Julie is no doubt right it is the path to the deepest relationship of all. However, in the reality of daily life it seems like both Rich and Julie are mega busy with their own projects and at times are not in the same geographical location. Of course personal growth and change and rebirth is essential for a meaningful life but for the journey of growth of the relationship itself needs time investment. The thing that Steve and I have found most beneficial for our relationship (we're about the same age as you guys) is quality time together. All day Saturday, sometimes getting up as early as 5am to see the dawn, we'll go hiking in the countryside together - no distractions, just us, nature and quality time. So yeah maybe it's not about developing "a protocol"- my god Steve would freak if I suggested this - but simply walking hand in hand.
There is much less tension than in other conversations between these two, I'm glad to see it and thankful for transparency throughout. I will say though, there are kinder ways to address weak vision in one eye. Anyway, happy for them. Shrimu is very exciting! Happy for this creative offering.

He seems fearful of being judged. I mean right away in the beginning she was already going after him saying oh is they’re a better vocabulary word I should be using? What I heard him say was he wanted to hear more about what she was going to say about him and she comes out swinging. Don’t blame him for staying in his cave is mere simple words evoke that kind of response. Not making it safe for him to reveal himself.
She is a total narcissist. I could only watch a bit because she is so self-important and constantly corrects him, then agrees with his point,, then disagrees, then agrees about the simple point he was making about a relationship transitioning from logistical with children in the house to semi-empty nesters. Any conversation with her would leave somebody absolutely spinning.
I saw the title and thought "23 years, well done!" Then I remembered it'll be 23 years for me and hubs in December.🤦♀️ I admire how you both have separate projects and seemingly different sensibilities and use these to grow as individuals and as a couple.

hi there. i never say anything on these videos but i wanted to this time… coming from a, i don’t like the word dysfunctional but its accurate. ill say unhealthy, household, this hurt a lot. seeing how healthy relationships can be. I am just starting this journey at 20 after an extremely rough five years. ill be listening to this off and on. i was just downtown at the local coffee shop. the past few months one of the local musicians have been coming for an hour to help me and a few other guys learn guitar. its incredible… i am alone most of the time. i am trying to change that. having to leave the lesson always leaves a crack in me. it sucks. then today the owner of the shop went up to ‘M’, the guitar teacher, and said ‘i’m going to sign my daughter up for private lessons!’ that one stung. he gives away his time for an hour a month because i cannot afford it. it was a hit in the face of what i never had. i am doing my best to get up everyday and get the rock up the hill. its like sisyphus though, everyday its back at the bottom. anyway i apologize for rambling. I needed to get this hurt out today instead of bottling it up. I have learned so much on this channel. i never had anyone to teach me how to cook in a healthy way so i’ve learned all i know from folks like you. so thank you. i hope whoever reads this is having a good day. some of us appreciate a smile more than anything… it can save a life. thanks 🌻

Julie is "comfortable" with the level of intimacy she's asking for bc it is her default by practice. She has tools that she practices daily. This is what she thinks about & probably saturates her thoughts in. It is her way of life. I understand her desire and enthusiasm for this level of intimacy. Also, I hope she relaxes a little on Rich bc he is different than she is in SO many ways. To start, women have 1000x more neuro pathways connecting the logical and emotional parts of the brain. For context, imagine have 1000x more $ in your bank account. Say you start with $500. X 1000 = $500,000. That's next level!!! 😮 Second, if intimacy is what you do for a living & you already excel at it, then you have the neuro pathways developed. And, you know your way around the dark forest of your shadow. This can make you well equipped to guide, and at the same time, well equipped to demand more than someone is capable of at your speed & capacity. Cut him some slack. (THIS is advice for me too.) Compassion isn't just used as a balm to make up for our trespassing. We must see & respect what we see, then tread lightly (preventative). Guiding through vulnerability with compassion & respect for the other person's capacity. Thank you for helping me see this in my own behavior, as you illustrate the instinct to want more than is possible at the moment, and how respect & patience is essential for high quality love

A close friend and his wife both retired and were home together a lot recently and Randy got annoyed by her constant over management and mothering for lack of better term. He moved out for a month or two to sort things out and moved back home. Too much time together after both working full time I can imagine the stress from the change. Im coming for you would get me a bit defensive too! Forgive her for a poor use of words. I think she enjoys tweaking Rich's emotions to get a reaction....good or bad. What if neither of you could do better thsn each other? I try to be 100% transparent and honest with everybody....all the time! try it for a day...then a week ...then a month. There are gifts from this. You will never go back.

Julie thank you for sharing the cinema story - BRILLIANT!!!!!! as it was so honest of you to self reflect that it led you to a different perspective and also -Rich- imo that led to one of your most brilliant shares ever (you had no idea this would be profound!) about cinema OCD and I think secretly coveting the Beckhams ordered wardrobes and kitchens 🙂 What this made me feel is exactly what Julie described -and what I -like you and I bet others- am sometimes afraid of- that people have only liked me because Ive been an imposter and if I dont get the downtime to restore my shine and hide my quirky traits (I like a good square line and it leads to many a disagreement about fitting our new bathroom- I like to sit directly in the middle at the cinema or on the sofa at home- etc etc!!) that I will get caught out- but what you both revealed is actually THOSE are the reasons people love us. Please dont think your need for order or a way of framing the world and feeling safe (or sitting in a chair which helps your vision!) makes you somehow crazy or less than. This made me wake up to that fact that the thing that separates you and those of us who struggle with perfection but are vulnerable is the fact that we can be HONEST about it. Our kids need to see this in us so that they dont automatically define these things as crazy or that crazy or difference- or sitting in a different chair or living in a tent-is wrong.Thats about letting the ego go, something which Julie has talked a lot about over the years. I stopped before that. This is the first podcast I've heard with both of them together. I found her rather condescending in a way that spiritual people tend to come off. I don't think anyone needs to open themselves that deeply (as she asks). We can be vulnerable, yet we still have parts of us that are not permeable. I felt somewhat sad for Rich in this one. I hope they can work through things, but not on his highly successful podcasts.
Haven't listened to the full episode yet but find it very interesting as I am 46 myself and my husband 53. Recognise the transition part. It's not only kids flying away, also menopause and guys also experience hormonal changes.
27:43 is the new flex - working thru the adversity and staying together, Principle of Perseverance (step 10). At 30:21 to Julie, some woman too, will say no to that. To Rich, I'm going thru the alternative...the family afterward isn't always together but still a family.

Btw, in order for a relationship to last it is hightly advisable to sleep in separate quarters....because if you sleep( as in slumber) in the same place the polarity lessens and you become too similar for it to be a 'juicy'. So separate bedrooms is very wise. I think what is being discussed here is what is present when ego(as in the mechanical activity of 'I) is not...even to know that in the context of 'yourself'...that is the best game going. I think Rick is struggling with an inaccurate sense of identification...identifying himself as the ego/I and not the vastness of being.... Courageous conversation!!!!!

I don't like her. And I have never liked these episodes. I feel like she is a domineering mother to Rich. It's really odd. And the hat? I mean, come on. You need to be different? Rich is a gem. I never liked Julie. Always seemed a bit controlling and jealous of Richs success. I think she is fake.
Rich is an avoidant attachment person and its a bit irritating but atleast he voices some things to her and thats progress. Just remember everyone is the same at their core youre not that different than anyone else. She has alot of patience with him but at the same time she needs to embrace his unique weird attributes and not call him out on it maybe like that he will relax into this intimacy thing

I disagree with the podcasts with his wife are his best. He has such good podcasts that really go deep and have such deep topics. You basically say this in no way comes close to the talks with his wife. No way. Keep going Rich. You are a really good interviewer and you bring very important topics to your table.
Very worthwhile episode. Julie has a lot of love and patience!! I don't mind her talking about her cheese, even though I can't afford it. Her passion makes it interesting to listen. I really don't think the episodes with Julie are the best, although I do love them and I'm glad they appear now and then. The best ones for me are those that offer crucial information on a wide range of topics, help me understand human beings better, and/or guide me to make my own life healthier, richer. happier, more compassionate, etc....

I originally got into the Rich Roll podcast as my husband has addiction issues - with alcohol and cannabis. He's making progress but recovery is not a linear path for sure. The amount of vulnerability Julie is asking from Rich is extremely full on, he's a very special person to be able to take on this level of exposure of his soul and inner being and what a journey he's had in his life from his own dark days of addiction. Julie is no doubt right it is the path to the deepest relationship of all. However, in the reality of daily life it seems like both Rich and Julie are mega busy with their own projects and at times are not in the same geographical location. Of course personal growth and change and rebirth is essential for a meaningful life but for the journey of growth of the relationship itself needs time investment. The thing that Steve and I have found most beneficial for our relationship (we're about the same age as you guys) is quality time together. All day Saturday, sometimes getting up as early as 5am to see the dawn, we'll go hiking in the countryside together - no distractions, just us, nature and quality time. So yeah maybe it's not about developing "a protocol"- my god Steve would freak if I suggested this - but simply walking hand in hand.
These are the best episodes. Every time...just Rich and Julie being themselves.

He seems fearful of being judged. I mean right away in the beginning she was already going after him saying oh is they’re a better vocabulary word I should be using? What I heard him say was he wanted to hear more about what she was going to say about him and she comes out swinging. Don’t blame him for staying in his cave is mere simple words evoke that kind of response. Not making it safe for him to reveal himself.

She is a total narcissist. I could only watch a bit because she is so self-important and constantly corrects him, then agrees with his point,, then disagrees, then agrees about the simple point he was making about a relationship transitioning from logistical with children in the house to semi-empty nesters. Any conversation with her would leave somebody absolutely spinning.

seeing how healthy relationships can be.
I am just starting this journey at 20 after an extremely rough five years. ill be listening to this off and on. i was just downtown at the local coffee shop. the past few months one of the local musicians have been coming for an hour to help me and a few other guys learn guitar. its incredible… i am alone most of the time. i am trying to change that. having to leave the lesson always leaves a crack in me. it sucks. then today the owner of the shop went up to ‘M’, the guitar teacher, and said ‘i’m going to sign my daughter up for private lessons!’
that one stung. he gives away his time for an hour a month because i cannot afford it. it was a hit in the face of what i never had. i am doing my best to get up everyday and get the rock up the hill. its like sisyphus though, everyday its back at the bottom. anyway i apologize for rambling. I needed to get this hurt out today instead of bottling it up. I have learned so much on this channel. i never had anyone to teach me how to cook in a healthy way so i’ve learned all i know from folks like you. so thank you.

Julie is "comfortable" with the level of intimacy she's asking for bc it is her default by practice. She has tools that she practices daily. This is what she thinks about & probably saturates her thoughts in. It is her way of life. I understand her desire and enthusiasm for this level of intimacy. Also, I hope she relaxes a little on Rich bc he is different than she is in SO many ways. To start, women have 1000x more neuro pathways connecting the logical and emotional parts of the brain. For context, imagine have 1000x more $ in your bank account. Say you start with $500. X 1000 = $500,000. That's next level!!! 😮
Second, if intimacy is what you do for a living & you already excel at it, then you have the neuro pathways developed. And, you know your way around the dark forest of your shadow. This can make you well equipped to guide, and at the same time, well equipped to demand more than someone is capable of at your speed & capacity. Cut him some slack. (THIS is advice for me too.) Compassion isn't just used as a balm to make up for our trespassing. We must see & respect what we see, then tread lightly (preventative). Guiding through vulnerability with compassion & respect for the other person's capacity. Thank you for helping me see this in my own behavior, as you illustrate the instinct to want more than is possible at the moment, and how respect & patience is essential for high quality love

- ME :)) To be clear I am just an ordinary person going through my struggles, but often during the worst I motivate myself by telling myself that, "haa, one day I will share all this on the RRP when I have become someone worthy enough of being on his show
A close friend and his wife both retired and were home together a lot recently and Randy got annoyed by her constant over management and mothering for lack of better term. He moved out for a month or two to sort things out and moved back home.
Too much time together after both working full time I can imagine the stress from the change.
Im coming for you would get me a bit defensive too! Forgive her for a poor use of words. I think she enjoys tweaking Rich's emotions to get a reaction....good or bad. What if neither of you could do better thsn each other? I try to be 100% transparent and honest with everybody....all the time! try it for a day...then a week ...then a month. There are gifts from this. You will never go back.

Julie thank you for sharing the cinema story - BRILLIANT!!!!!! as it was so honest of you to self reflect that it led you to a different perspective and also -Rich- imo that led to one of your most brilliant shares ever (you had no idea this would be profound!) about cinema OCD and I think secretly coveting the Beckhams ordered wardrobes and kitchens 🙂
What this made me feel is exactly what Julie described -and what I -like you and I bet others- am sometimes afraid of- that people have only liked me because Ive been an imposter and if I dont get the downtime to restore my shine and hide my quirky traits (I like a good square line and it leads to many a disagreement about fitting our new bathroom- I like to sit directly in the middle at the cinema or on the sofa at home- etc etc!!) that I will get caught out- but what you both revealed is actually THOSE are the reasons people love us. Please dont think your need for order or a way of framing the world and feeling safe (or sitting in a chair which helps your vision!) makes you somehow crazy or less than. This made me wake up to that fact that the thing that separates you and those of us who struggle with perfection but are vulnerable is the fact that we can be HONEST about it. Our kids need to see this in us so that they dont automatically define these things as crazy or that crazy or difference- or sitting in a different chair or living in a tent-is wrong.Thats about letting the ego go, something which Julie has talked a lot about over the years. THANKS AGAIN!

I stopped before that. This is the first podcast I've heard with both of them together. I found her rather condescending in a way that spiritual people tend to come off. I don't think anyone needs to open themselves that deeply (as she asks). We can be vulnerable, yet we still have parts of us that are not permeable. I felt somewhat sad for Rich in this one. I hope they can work through things, but not on his highly successful podcasts.
Haven't listened to the full episode yet but find it very interesting as I am 46 myself and my husband 53. Recognise the transition part. It's not only kids flying away, also menopause and guys also experience hormonal changes.

Btw, in order for a relationship to last it is hightly advisable to sleep in separate quarters....because if you sleep( as in slumber) in the same place the polarity lessens and you become too similar for it to be a 'juicy'. So separate bedrooms is very wise.
I think what is being discussed here is what is present when ego(as in the mechanical activity of 'I) is not...even to know that in the context of 'yourself'...that is the best game going.
I think Rick is struggling with an inaccurate sense of identification...identifying himself as the ego/I and not the vastness of being....

Rich is an avoidant attachment person and its a bit irritating but atleast he voices some things to her and thats progress. Just remember everyone is the same at their core youre not that different than anyone else. She has alot of patience with him but at the same time she needs to embrace his unique weird attributes and not call him out on it maybe like that he will relax into this intimacy thing
