    Pre 3 mins 30 seconds the wind instrument is a soprano sax, after that it’s a tenor saxophone. The sound is also being treated by Eno.

    Early 80's at Kent State. Finally bought this first Roxy album after checking out the hot chicks on the covers for years.
    It's my favorite Roxy song, but it took a while to hook me.
    40 years later after marriages, career, divorces, losing my financial ass in the late 2000's and losing an adult child, I hear If There is Something in the Sheetz gas station last summer in Akron.
    I've played it more than a hundred times in the last several months. It's a safe place.

    The three stages of life and the one love whose flame burns throughout, fully illustrated in a creative, beautiful way by an artist so ahead of his time. I really enjoy watching your first reactions to Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music especially. They’re so unique and hard to predict that I get to watch how I may have reacted through you when I first listened so many years ago.

    Thank you for doing this track from Roxy Music's self-titled first album. It's an excellent song and very typical of early Roxy Music. Yes, it is an Oboe, and they used to use phasing.

    • @hanierfamily
      @hanierfamily  2 роки тому +1

      The reason I was thinking wah pedal was because it felt controlled, not like a phase. Unless they were manipulating the phase in the booth.

      @@hanierfamily At this time Brian Eno was in the band, he did most of their electronic effects, at end of another song from their second album 'For Your Pleasure', there is a lot of phasing done, it's one that would be good to react to, 'In Every Dream Home a Heartache', Roxy Music were very experimental and tried many different effects on their tracks.

    • @thesongsofthestrawberrythi3902

      @@thesongsofthestrawberrythi3902 Well, according to the details given on the vinyl album, that gives an Oboe as the instrument played by Andy MacKay, as well as him supplying backing vocals, but on the live version which appears on the album 'Viva!' it lists it as saxophone, I suppose it depends which version you go with.

  • @lemming9984

    Singer Brian Ferry's concept for Roxy was sort of retro/futuristic/sci fi. Hints back to 50's rock n roll but with early 70s Glam rock. The inside of the gatefold sleeve to this album shows what they were about.

    Your're right, it's an oboe. I assume by now you're aware of the magic ingredient in this period of Roxy Music. That magic ingredient is Brian Eno, who not only played around with the synthesizer, but also treated the guitar and oboe. 2 powerhouse brains in the band, both name Byran/Brian.

    Really not sure why you've done so many reaction videos to Roxy Music songs when you clearly don't 'get' them. For Roxy fans, we find their recordings were a mix of their own version of glam rock as well as what came to be known as 'art rock', but also just great danceable rock and stellar songs that set a unique standard for pop sensibilities. They are not for everyone. Calling them 'crazy', 'different',
    'weird' rather than 'unique', 'innovative', 'original', is like making a backhanded compliment.

    Could've done without the shite/corny country overtones to begin with, and Ferry's brief flirtation with machine-gun vibrato was simply off-putting.
    The second and third sections really shine and it's clear this always had the makings of a major classic.... if they'd just reined in those crappier elements.
