What Brad hasn't shared, is the fact he has almost perfectly reproduced the original Daft Punk setup. He's got the equipment correct all the way down to the Mackie mixer
@@awesomekid8922 They used MPC (60 i think) Emu SP 1200 and ASR 10, among others depending on the sound they were after. It's all available info from a rare interview they did just after their second album. They mention most of their studio setup. The mixer isn't quite accurate though; They used a Mackie CR 1604 (pre VLZ is better for clipping) and a 1202 (again the 1st gen pre-VLZ model) after the 1st gen they didn't sound as good. You can find the older model Mackie's on ebay though.
The best story is when they were just kids playing some small gig , think it was guy-man but who knows back then… but he used a TRS cable and bumped a input making that buzz click sound . But he went with it and played the input with the cable as if it was an instrument. It’s now basically a myth like the birth of Apollo or Gilgamesh at Uruk .

Gotta say watching ppl remake Homework songs is one of my fave past times. Specifically with equipment rather than computer entirely. Gives a whole new understanding of how Thomas and Guy did all this in Thomas' bedroom in the 90s. Also where does the guitar riff come from played in the original "Fresh" song.
Thanks... I don't think anyone really knows for sure how they made the sound but I'd be willing to bet it was created by them and not sampled. But that's just me.
Absolutely nailed it! The Phaser is a very important part of the sound and no other phaser can reproduce the sound of the DP/4 phaser preset. Excellent job!
6 Years later and still coming back to this video every once in a while, it's so satisfying, I picture Thomas & Guy Man in their Student Bedroom creating this legendary song. RECREATION AT IT'S FINEST, From the gears (mackie mixer, Akai sampler, Ensoniq DP4, Alesis 3630...)I just miss the Juno 106 guitar sound for it to be perfect. But amazing work man !
House music is a lot about bass and high end to be quite honest. I found my mixes would sound a lot more like that classic house sound once i got rid of certain mid frequencies but you gotta dial it in based on the sample being used. And i split the sample into two tracks, bass and high end. The bass i do not mess with only to tune to work with the kicl drum but the high end i can put effects on or add filters and get creative
When you see the remake you feel that it’s easy but making it I bet it was not that easy for the daft punk, detecting a sample loop is always not easy but fun at the same time !
I'm thinking about getting a DP/2 since I don't have a good enough budget for a DP/4. You think Ensoniq copies over the effects from each DP effects processor series? I've read up on forums that they do, but I wanna know for sure that they do, Since I really love that phaser sound with the digital delay. _Update: Jan 7th 2022, I now own a DP/4 for almost 2 years now, and I love it!_
I own a 3630 myself and I am quite sure you do not need the sidechain input, just put the compressor on your master and it will do the pumping for you with the right settings.
Fantastic video, and a pleasure to watch. Can I ask what exactly you did at 0:43? As I understood, you want to leave the low end as is and only apply phaser to midrange and above. I'm trying to achieve the same in ableton using EQs and filters. E.g. 1 high pass filter to give me my mids+highs and 1 low pass filter to give me my low end, both at 200Hz with a 12dB crossover. But together they are either boosting my gain by a lot or else removing frequencies and weakening the sound, depending on the slope (6dB. 12dB, 24dB etc). Any recommendations/best practices for splitting lows and mids+highs as you show in the vid? Thank you!
Correct, you don't wanna be running your low end into stereo FX. It will make things muddy real quick. So yes, I split the sample into two channels, one for 200 hz and the other for above just like you said. And then I almost always lower the mid frequencies somewhere on the spectrum since this is the only adjustable band on my mackie mixer. Where exactly that is will depend on the sample and where I cutoff the low end at. I remember back in the day trying to get that same sound in Ableton as well but I always found it very difficult to emulate. The Mackie being so limited kinda simplifies things in an awesome way. But my suggestion to you would be maybe try dropping the mid frequencies somewhere where it might sorta camouflage that boost you are running into. Hope that helps.
@@bradh6935 Thanks ever so much for the tips! Since the time I posted my original comment I've also learnt about linear phase EQs, which allows separation of low and high frequencies without the 2 bands phase cancelling each other. However, linear phase does come with the caveat of "pre-ringing" which can affect transients and punchiness. I will also bear in mind to play around with the crossover frequency. All in all, as you say, it is experimentation and seeing what works best for the sample in question :)
Noob question. I want to get a setup like this to remake and create house music. Is he running any of this into a DAW? Or is it all coming from the MPC? If I was to get a mpc and a mixer, how would I use it with the daw connection wise?
