Long form is great for learning. I love watching your videos to improve my own soldering and seeing how you detail cleaning/soldering the more tricky points that often aren't included in the short form is really useful. Especially useful to see how you manage the more 'fiddly' parts of soldering... the perfect amount of fiddle :-| to get the soldering done. Excellent videos!

On the 2nd GBC, the original board needs new electrolythic capacitors, in order for the display to work.

i bought that bitset today, holy crap its amazing. the magnetic cover is amazing I used it the way you do before I even saw this haha, plus the corner magnets kinda keepem all together. That bit set is absolutely top 3 buys for myself ever.

I agree there are times when the "carry method" of applying solder is best, but when doing many pins on a flat surface, I find the direct application of solder while soldering superior.

Watchin u struggle with those speaker wires gave me bad flashbacks, just unsolder at the speaker and use the original wires so u dont have to fuss with em

You made that first GBC way harder than it needed to be. Go check out Joey Does Tech, that dude is a wizard with electronics
A pick tool is not the proper tool to remove corrosion...and dry battery acid IS corrosion.
Go to an O'Reilly Auto Parts and ask for a couple sheets of red scotch brite. That's what you want to use to get corrosion off because it doesnt damage like a pick tool does

For your second GBC I have seen it to where the ribbon cable just needs lightly reflowed to the back of the screen. That might be the issue. But doing that you have to be extremely careful doing that. Because its so easy to melt the ribbon cable. Honestly if I had a chance to take a crack at fixing GBC id take it because I think it would be worth fixing with an original screen.

@the_blue_gamer Genuine question since I am trying to learn how to diagnose issues and want to learn from more experienced people. Since he replaced the board but kept the original screen and ribbon cable, and it then worked, doesn't that rule out the need to reflow the ribbon cable? Which meant their was an issue with the board like maybe the corroded capacitors?
@@gavinbeck2949 that is certainly possible. It could have even been a possible broken trace as well. Which in that case... It just depends on how far you honestly want to chase things and how much time you want to spend on something.
@@gavinbeck2949 And I have seen come circumstances where it was also both where the corroded capacitor was so bad it had eaten away the copper traces which can be tricky and some work.
@@the_blue_gamer For the copper traces, do you just have to check the continuity on each one to find the issue? And I guess if you find a bad trace, what even is the fix?
41:23 never realized they fanned out the address and databus. Also maybe a quick ultrasonic bath for all the little holes?
Nice video been seeing a lot of your videos and have learned tons of thing. but I have a challenge for you. I have an OG Xbox modded that I have tried to use but for some reason it does not work anymore. it turns on and off then repeats itself a few more times than it gives me the green/ red blinking lights. I send it in once and they could figure out or fix the issue. you think you can fit it?
My suggestion for your heat gun, is an heat gun attachment to better focus the heat in the only needed areas, if you want I can get you some.
You need better cotton swabs. I would recommend glob mobs. They aren't stringy and hold up really well. Regular ones fall apart too easily.
That's my current Gameboy. Just cleaned it up, and had to buy a new battery case cause i seemed to have misplaced it. Definitely around.
The new battery cover is just ever so slightly a different blue. Absolutely tormenting.
It's really hard to find matching battery covers for these. When I buy them for projects I always try to buy them with battery covers.

Is the water-damaged GBC with Meowth, in a genuine (and original) Australian-edition Pokemon shell?
The iFixit pro toolkit is excellent, apart from 1x thing. The foam that holds the bits has identifying mark printed in black. For selecting the correct bit these marking need to be in a colour that is not black.
yea they just etched them into the foam. although i will say ive had kits with NO markings so this was a huge improvement for me
You would have thought I was an obvious thing to do. It’s a case of companies designing products and never using them.
Why don't you have one of those Hakko desoldering guns? Doing any extensive through hole component work without one is a pain. Also adding fresh soldier first helps since what's on the board is probably decades old.
I do have one but I generally only use it if I'm doing a lot of desoldering.
Someone gave me an Nintendo Gameboy DMG.
I turned it on and it didn’t work. I opened it up and it was super clean! No corrosion or whatsoever. I just cleaned everything with 99% alcohol and it worked again.
god, that ifixit kit... whos idea was it to etch the bit types into the foam like that?

I think I'd have done an IPS Screen and LiPo mod on the first one. Better screen, longer battery life and you don't need the DC/DC board anymore :D

Yep, it's always hard to decide what to mod vs keep original.
The removal of the sub-board would have been helped with low-melt solder.

God I miss the Pokémon GBC. I had that exact model, same lens variant, played the crap out of it. What happened to it, ohh I only SOLD IT AT A YARD SALE FML. This was centuries ago sooo I don’t remember how much I sold it for, but you can rest assured it was probably a stupid low price..

I really think time for you to invest in some low melt solder
when using the wick, put your soldering iron tip a few millimeters down the wick away from the pin. solder is drawn to the heat and will flow in that direction
This. And please don’t force any soldered parts from the board when heating pads. The second gameboy motherboard has some destroyed pads due to the removal of the cartridge slot. The pads are still attached to the cartridge slot pins, which renders the board useless, unless you’re fixing them. As for the via’s with corrosion: get a tiny diameter drill bit and manually (and gently) drill those via’s. Afterwards, you should be able to flow some solder through the holes. If you’re lucky, the holes are still bearing copper, which can be flowed with some fresh solder. If not, just scrape away some of the surrounding solder mask and use a thin wire to make the solder find its way through the via’s, bridging their respective traces.
Also, investing in a desoldering gun is a very effective method to not get those pads and traces ripped off the board. Use loads of flux to be sure. :)
Try using an acid brush with bristles cut off about half to clean and remove flux.

WIsh I could fix the audio on mine.. the 2 contacts are gone on the board.
I've not fixed that specific problem but you should be able to create some jumpers from the board to the speaker. It does take some soldering skills though

I have fixed a lot of them. Sometimes this is just a problem with the fpc connector of the screens flat cable. I scrape it with fine sandpaper carefully and voila!

for someone who does this for a living, how do you not have a proper solder suction gun....that whole job would have been done in 10 seconds flat.
Everyone has their own preference of tools.
I do have one. I usually only bring it out if I need to do a lot of desoldering.

Please invest in a suction gun. The plunger is imho terrible and just using wick is just going to destroy the pads.
I have a desoldering iron and use it when I feel that it's the best tool for the job. Solder suckers work great if you know how to use them and wick also works great when you have a feel for how to use it effectively.
