These are essentially just normal fat PS2's, but without any security checks. The PS2 HDD was only used to store game saves and Final Fantasy Online patches afaik
I have the PS2 with the original network adaptor with the DSL port including 120gb ide on 39003 or 30003R console can't remember which one as it been awhile I seen it since the latest freemcboot on memory card it originally had hd advance disk to boot games from the hard drive but the disk is scratched to death top and bottom which is impossible to get new anywhere online. So freemcboot and hd advance is a life saver and the disk drive works just fine

I fixed over 100 of these. If it reads both ps1 and ps2 games, it'll read CDs and DVDs. Some PS2 games are blue, that just means they were small files and was burned to a CD instead of a DVD.
Oh man, I have repaired mine SO many times. I even replaced the power supply. Unfortunately, the video finally went out on it and I didn't have someone awesome like TronicsFix nearby, so I gave it away to someone for parts last year. Man, Sony built things to last. I think I bought it back in 2001 making it 22 freaking years. That console lasted longer than most marriages.
@@mark902 quite a few have died or been scrapped, and regular (non-sony branded) PATA drives are becoming less common. and some of us prefer to keep the systems as oem as possible, which leaves us with just the pata drives as options, since the network adapter never got sata as an option.
@@mark902 yep they are needed to complete final fantasy 11 and since they are getting harder to get the prices are going up, I've found some on ebay around $50 just for the hard drive
It's nothing special. Unless the console is modded, homebrews or other loaded games were added. Other than that, that Hard Drive was most likely used for FF.
The 40Gb HDD and network card used to be a package deal with Final Fantasy 11 online, since you needed that much storage space for all the updates and expansions the game would have. Plus as well as needing the network adapter to go online itself, since the ps2 didn't have it built in. You can notice that it has an ethernet connection on it, so you needed to have cable internet service to access the game. But then later, all the systems started to have it ethernet intergraded into the systems itself for online compatibility.
You could lube that white piece also where the two tabs slide in to lift the laser assy. And also the middle of the two white gears for turning smooth when under load. And if you're really going for it, a small drop of sewing machiene oil on the motor bearing. All helps agains friction for ejecting the tray. Best of luck Steve.
I remember way back when I had to replace my disc drive on my PS2 that there were two different manufacturers for the drive, I believe Phillips was one of them, I'm struggling to remember the other. But they were definitely different designs.
Judging by the melted side of the case we can probablt deduce that there was one of those hot oil burner things next to it, or something like that, it melted it and sucked the oil vapour or whatever it was. It seem linked.
Great job Steve. Hope you get well soon. It sort of looks like the drive is self-returning back in the PS2 after opening it and not pushing the disc drive button. Was that issue ever fixed?
I have a 3001 model. It's one of the first ones. To change the battery, you have to desolder the 2 piece motherboard. The heat sink is a thick, solid piece of, I guess, aluminum. Revisions after are much easier to take apart.
Love you videos. Try using the tweezers instead of pliers to remove the cable from fan headers going forward. They grip well when you remove the cable from the side. I also find tweezers work well for PS3 controller battery cables as well.
If you have some stuck cables in connectors that have been sitting there for years, just let it soak in some isopropyl. After a few seconds it is much easier to disconnect the cable
Vaping didn’t come about until around 2013-2014, long after PS2 development’s heyday, so I really doubt somebody was vaping by that console. Plus it would be coating the entire interior and not just the rear of the unit by the fan, if it had gotten pulled in through the vents. Some dev probably spilled their Big Gulp on their desk and some of it splashed into the unit through the fan.
My guess would be a plastic cleaner/conditioner like ArmorAll for your sticky stuff . And according to Google , 10 mb was considered too large for a personal computer in 2002 .
16:40 I don't think that's vape residue. It would literally be on every surface if that's what it was. And it's not that sticky. It should be water soluble so no it doesn't build up in your lungs like that. 😅 I kinda think it may be dielectric grease, but no idea why it would be in there. Maybe just some spillage of something.
Beside I don't think vaping would cause this, he would have to be blowing it directly in the air vent. Also my sister has been vaping for over ten years now and he house is clean, no residue whatsoever. It seems like a stretch. All Ps2's came with Network/IDE 40GB hard drive if they did.
Would it be possible to get some normal view shots in the corner when you are using footage from the microscope? I would love to get a sense of how small some of these components are that you work on.
Looks like your 2nd PS2 is still bad. It's a fault I encounter in very few of them which the disc tray auto retracts after a couple of seconds. I still don't understand why it does that.
Hay man ty for your videos I have been feverish and lightheaded lately and scared to death. Bless you for your kindness and knowledge. I might be in the emergency room soon I really hope not.
Speaking of rookie mistakes..... Why on earth would you clean the fan on top of the motherboard? Those pins broke when my a-hole brother would push the disc in not using the button.
Every one on TikTok don't no what they is talking about when it come to vaping if they stop buying it off the black market and buy it out the vape shop I vape and been for 10 years and I don't have no problems

There are several types of disc you need to test. Blue(ps2), black(ps1), gold(ps2 &dvd), and CD. A faulty laser could read some types but not all.

Yeah. My dvd failed but cd was ok. I had to swap the laser.

You’ll be back to looking and feeling like this before you know it, Steve. Keep your spirits up and we’re rooting for you, man.
You should use a silicone lubricant; Oil-based lubricates attract dirt and dust which sticks to the oil-based lubricant and turns it into sticky gum.

the disk drive of the 2nd PS2 is not working properly... It stops before the end and get right back into the PS2.... You can do better !

Nice video, Putting the band in hot water for a while will shrink it a little so it'll tighten it up and of course clean any grease off it.
You should consider investing in those large flat cotton swabs. They would work better for larger surfaces :)
That 40GB HDD needs imaging asap. I’m sure there are repositories it can be saved on.

You need to grease the tray mechanism upon assembly.
was thinking this gonna be hard repairing.. but this is an easy one. 0:52
Just wanted to say you shouldn't put alcohol on rubber bands. It will dry them out and make them crack.
There's an issue with PS2's where it functions in the beginning, but after a while it starts hanging with certain kinds of discs.
Looks like your 2nd PS2 is still bad. It's a fault I encounter in very few of them which the disc tray auto retracts after a couple of seconds. I still don't understand why it does that.
Well the drive on the second one is not really fixed... You gotta pull it out so it won't close on itself after two seconds.
Hay man ty for your videos I have been feverish and lightheaded lately and scared to death. Bless you for your kindness and knowledge. I might be in the emergency room soon I really hope not.
I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you feel better soon!
Where is the best place to buy replacement bands for these DVD drives? Allie express bands are hit and miss.
Vape residue? In a PS2 Dev kit? Extremely unlikely.
also chiming in to hope you get that drive in the hands of someone to image, just in case it does have some part of video game history.
Great job again
damn. 2 dev kit? that is rare.
18:39 i wonder what games/prototypes are in that hdd
I hope you're getting better. Don't these PS2's come with liquid metal?
No they don't they actually come with a thermal pad on top of the CPU because they don't generate high temperature
When in doubt take more screws out? Is that a new Merch shirt?
We could definitely make it into a shirt!
not sure but i heard waaay back that you should not use IPA on rubber belts.
Did you try the memory Card slot maybe there broken
A small amount of lubricant. All ya need. Lithium grease.
Speaking of rookie mistakes..... Why on earth would you clean the fan on top of the motherboard? Those pins broke when my a-hole brother would push the disc in not using the button.
Your lungs clean themselves ps2 have you to clean them.
What is the bios chip marking?
I wonder if their vape overheated and exploded next to that playstation.
Fan connector gives up at 6:09 lol
Me watching this hitting my vape…😂😭
Can you flatten the dent with your hot air and pressure?
Be honest. You just broke the fan connector for content for us to watch.😉👍
Lol, if only!
It’s not surprising the PS2 breaks play marvel Vs capcom 2 on the PS2 or even on the PS3 it will break those consoles
Possibly oil from the fan
I broke many of PS2 connectors , idk why but maybe because sony uses cheap parts
