Jan Hooks was always great and never broke character, truly the most underrated of all the greats of SNL. Meanwhile my friends and I still say “well isn’t that special “ all the time, the kids have no idea…
This was from the very first episode of SNL for Dana Carvey, Jan Hooks and Phil Hartman. The Church Chat sketch was going to be at the end of the show but it got so many laughs in rehearsal that they made it the opening sketch. Dana had created the Church Lady in his stand-up act but the concept of the Church Chat show was created with SNL's writers.
Mostly true - it wasn’t moved up to be the first sketch but it was indeed moved up. It ended up being the eighth segment if you include the monologue, a fake commercial and a pre-taped segment. Or I guess you could say it was the last skit before the musical guest’s first appearance.
@@DLundgren22 OK, according to Saturday Net, that's true. It was also the third sketch after Tommy Flanagan and Quiz Masters. The other segments you mention were the monologue and commercials.
I've heard Dana Carvey say that on Fly on the Wall, that is was moved up to be the cold open, but I'm confused: they don't say Live from NY, it's Saturday night! So maybe he misremembered? Or maybe this video is from dress?
@@louyeh hearing that Fly On The Wall episode is what led me to look into Dana's first SNL episode. I can't remember what Dana said specifically on the podcast but if he claimed Church Chat was moved into the cold open slot then he was mistaken. You can find the actual order of that night's SNL skits online if you look around.
More accurate to say this SNL episode introduced us to those three performers. They all appeared in earlier sketches in the episode before the Church Chat skit came on.
Weird that you didn't include Nora Dunn in there. Actually, it's not weird, because she was the least funny of the group. But she'd be the star of today's SNL.
And so on October 11th, 1986, an iconic piece of American pop culture was born, !!! Even though Dana Carvey had already done parts of this character in his stand-up shows, was on SNL where this concept exploded.
As The Church Lady herself...or rather, himself... would say: "Well, isn't that special"?!? (I just couldn't resist the "temptation" to do that-Hee hee hee hee hee hee)!
Daaaaaaaaang! Considering how intelligent, reserved and funny SW is, she reeeeeeally got into character on this one...even more than the movie! She must have had a great time letting go...!
Dana Carvey was raised Lutheran, and the character was inspired by a couple people from his church, so I think it's safe to say she's Lutheran, but I don't disagree with your analysis.
If she woulda started speaking in unknown tongues, some people would've labelled her either Pentecostal or Charismatic. I know. I've been both, at one point or another in my lifetime. I've seen some weird stuff, too. When people are rolling around on the Church floor, that's bad enough. However, I once saw these two young men that I knew personally, crawling around at the altar, and they were so out of their own minds, that I actually heard them barking like dogs! Soon afterwards, I quit going to that "Church" on a regular basis, and, as of 1992, I haven't been back since, except for my Mother's Funeral. Even then, the "Pastor" of that "Church" tried to get my Brother and I to start attending there again...and I was having none of it! To me, that'd be like getting caught in a trap, but being able to get yourself free...then revisiting that same trap, and start playing with it again. No thanks-not for me!
My mother's family all attended and they converted my sister who then tried to convert me. She came home complaining that she had mud in her hair from rolling around in the floor . She is an attention seeker and a drama queen so I guess it suited her . She finely gave up on me. I'm real quiet and reserved, not my cup of tea.
This was great! I've never seen it before. It's a great parody of the scene from Ghostbusters, which was very popular at the time. I can't believe this came out in 1986, 37 years ago.
I seem to remember the Church Lady character introduced in a church potluck setting for some reason - and then dropped into this talk show format (which was definitely a better fit). That was a long time ago and my memory could be tricking me here though!
@@bribabytt Wait, wasn’t she part of the one time, fired cast of season 11? There’s no way she could’ve been part of that sketch since Dana wasn’t hired till next season unless she was hosting during that sketches time period.
I love Church Lady, probably my favorite of all SNL skits. This group was so talented, Dana, Phil and Jan especially. I first saw Jan when Turner Broadcasting came on the scene and she was on a little comedy show called Tush. I especially loved her tag line, "We'll all be killed!" from the space skit. I wish somebody would release the full run of that show. It wasn't slick or polished but it was so funny. Phil and Jan are really missed, two comic geniuses.
This was really good introduction to Church Chat, but probably the best was Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker where they accidentally showed Jan as Tammy Faye putting in eye drops. It was hysterical, but they thought they'd fix the mistake by showing another camera angle during the rerun. After people complained that they got rid of the accidental joke that Tammy Faye would use eye drops to fake cry, they restored it to the original!

Dana Carvey was raised Lutheran, and the character was inspired by a couple people from his church, so I think it's safe to say she's Lutheran, but I don't disagree with your analysis.
