I don't think people realize how much of a cultural phenomenon these Church Lady sketches were at the time. Everybody at work or school would take their stab at imitating the Church Lady's voice, trying to imitate the "well isn't that special" just perfectly. It really was a thing back then.
There was another Tammy Faye episode where she says she was smokin' a cigarette 🚬 & the the cherry fell off n burned a hole in the sweater. & the sweater burned 🔥 like the devil's 😈 eyes 👀 & I threw that sweater down & said, "Sweater, I rebuke you!!" Absolutely hilarious. 🐘 😂.
When Phil and Jan were paired up on SNL in the late 80's and early 90's there skits were always really funny. They always seemed like they worked well together.
No matter how many times I watch church lady...it is always the same...within seconds I'm laughing so hard that tears are staining my face!!!! Those comedians on SNL are the best of the best!!!! There's not enough there for a full movie, let alone a real 30-minute TV show; but they could have done a new sketch of Church Chat as an interlude or TV show inside another movie.
She did it constantly. It seemed to have been intentional. On the other hand, she finally got all that makeup tattooed on her face, which prevented that from happening. I'm not kidding. She really did that. Later, she got very ill, and the make-up tattoo just made her look much worse.
I remember watching this when it was first aired and they've since cut out one tiny part: when the camera accidentally caught Tammy putting drops of the black running mascara on her face with a small bottle! You should have left it in, it was funny as hell!
I loved that version, it made it seem that Tammy was fake-crying! They took it out on the rerun, but I thought they brought it back for the next re-broadcast because people at home thought it was so funny and complained!

Dana is a national treasure! True story, when I was younger I attended a National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers convention in Boston. We met Manuel Noriega’s defense attorney. He said that often people ask him how he could defend the man. His response was “ Are you kidding? I felt like I was the Avon lady and Tammy Faye Baker came knocking at my door!” 🤣
