    Fun fact: proper metal screaming won't hurt your voice but raspy singing very easily can like she said. I've been screaming for 3 years, almost every day, with no issues. But if I sing even for like 5 minutes in a raspy voice without very strong diaphragm support my voice gets very strained. I've screamed for 2 hours with proper technique at concerts with no pain to give perspective.

      Ilaz Sadiku Have you learned to scream properly?

      Well, as I haven't found any good explanations on the internet myself, I can only speak from my own experience. What you need to be able to do is controling the closure of the vocal folds and the closure of the region above the vocal folds (cuneiform cartilage and corniculate cartilage obviously) independently, while adding the right amount of breath pressure. If the vocal folds are compressed too much and you're adding too much pressure, you can hurt them. You should never do what makes your throat feel sore.
      Practising what is called a growl or low scream is a good way to start, because you learn to compress the cartilages, while relaxing the vocal folds, so that they don't produce any tone. And it's a good training for breath support. It feels very different from vocal fry or shouting. In the next step you can get into rasp starting from a low scream by letting the vocal folds approach just a bit, so that they produce a tone. Maybe also relax the cartilages a little bit.
      Approaching the vocal folds is what you do when you move from no sound to a breathy voice to a full voice to a mix of voice and vocal fry (= the soft distortion Freya uses, also used by basses to sing lower) to vocal fry. Practising this will help you getting control over the closure of the vocal folds when singing with grid.
      Once you know how it's done, a good exercise is to move forth and back between a clean and a raspy sound starting at different closures of the vocal folds. Try to get as close as possible to the point, where the flip happens, so that only a slight adjustment of the cartilages is needed to do it.
      In order to maintain rasp you need a higher breath pressure. So when you are singing with rasp, you could just reduce the breath pressure while maintaining the exact same throat position and you will slip back into the clean tone, so that you can check how close your vocal folds are. Depending on the position of the vocal folds and the cartilages, different resonances - different types of distortion will occur.

    Use the nasal voice "meeeeehhh, I don't wannaaaa!" to produce heat.
    Incorperate that into the song.
    It doesn't hurt, and the effect is the same. It's what Brian uses to hit those notes, not vocal fry. This is evident in the way he uses an "h" sound before most lines to prevent the voice from being damaged.

    I don't see how Janis had damaged vocal chords? she had a fantasic range and was able to do soft vocals (summer time) which if her vocal folds were damaged she wouldn't be able to do/control. I think Janis was naturally husky, if you listen to her early recordings of country/bluegrass stuff she had already set in place a technique to give her a rasp, very high faulsetto with a fry added, sounds very compressed but all the same very impressive.

    Look you are not using "rasp" here, you are using "fry" to simulate rasp. Rasp by definition is bad for your voice and cannot be obtained in a healthy way. You wanna sound raspy you have to push a lot of air through your vocal chords, no way around it (think: Kurt Cobain, Axl Rose, Rod Stewart etc.). You can use the fry effect to obtain a similar sound, but the only problem is that it doesn't have the same "power" that exhaling all that air through your vocal chords has. It literally sounds similar, but with less power and intensity. If you want to sing a Nirvana song and for it to sound right, you have to wear out your voice a little. Otherwise, using fry to simulate the sound will leave the song sounding "without balls".

    I find that the gravel technique is far more effective and easier to understand especially for new singers or those new to belting or vocal fry technique..
    The buzzer is the best analogy that I was taught at Musicians Institute in LA from Brian "Hacksaw" Williams for gravel..
    Make the noise of a buzzer that you would hear at a game show if the wrong answer was given.
    BAAAAAM!! Feel the pressure on your lungs as if you were holding your breath and slowly letting your voice out under the pressure of almost holding your breath..
    Just add this buzzer noise at any pitch and you will unlock true belting like Def Leppard/Metallica or Nirvana etc.. Anyone who adds distortion to the voice really..
    Changed my life and vocal capabitity completely..
    Hope this helps anyone who reads it. It is not easy to transcribe feelings and sounds from text..
    This is the best method for the extreme sound you seek.

    Basically.... If you feel any amount of discomfort, you are doing it wrong. Which is actually a great feedback mechanism. But as she says, don't over do it, if you are singing metal songs that are completely screaming, try to break it up by adding in clean sections to give your chords a break.

  • @fidrewe99

    Well, this is the soft version of rasp. It has its applications, but you can do it much more rough and powerful without killing your voice, if you're using compression of the tissue above the vocal folds.

    • @victoriapd8001
      @victoriapd8001 6 років тому

      It doesn't damage your voice but with time it starts sounding a bit raspier when you speak (which is not necessarily a bad thing, at least not for me) and that's why many people prefer doing this, or maybe they just can't do the other thing

    • @fidrewe99
      @fidrewe99 3 роки тому

      @@victoriapd8001 I've been doing the other thing for years and my voice is as clean as ever. It can't do anything to my vocal folds, because it does not change the way I use my vocal folds. Yes, there is a danger of doing it wrong and damaging the vocal folds.

  • @M4jiK_TV
    @M4jiK_TV 8 років тому +225

    Honestly, you are using vocal fry to simulate Janis' rasp and that is 100% not what she is doing. When you listen to her sing, can you not tell the difference between what you are doing and what she is doing? It's concerning to me that you are giving lessons on this. It's very misleading to those who are listening to this video that may not know better. The rasp comes from a seperate section of the throat and is caused by a combination of things. The false folds higher in the throat are what manipulates the sound. It is NOT caused by exaggerated vocal chord closure as you describe. Joplin's Plant-esque blues feel only compliments this effect.

    • @M4jiK_TV
      @M4jiK_TV 8 років тому +14

      Yeah I do remember you clarifying that in the video. Wasn't trying to be harsh, I guess I just don't see the effectiveness in emulating a raspy sound by substituting a technique that doesn't accomplish the end result desired. But to each their own! I see that you're just trying to help others not injure themselves and that is a good intention to have. Stay cool, good luck in the future!

    • @nectariosgeorgiou

      Dunkel Ulv I don't think it was natural listen to a lot of Janis early,recording she was a blues singer loads of Blues standard she done in her early 20's show that it wasn't until she joined big brother she started to sing like that on cheap thrills I think it was easy for her to do but she didn't always have that ability
