Fun fact: proper metal screaming won't hurt your voice but raspy singing very easily can like she said. I've been screaming for 3 years, almost every day, with no issues. But if I sing even for like 5 minutes in a raspy voice without very strong diaphragm support my voice gets very strained. I've screamed for 2 hours with proper technique at concerts with no pain to give perspective.
Well, as I haven't found any good explanations on the internet myself, I can only speak from my own experience. What you need to be able to do is controling the closure of the vocal folds and the closure of the region above the vocal folds (cuneiform cartilage and corniculate cartilage obviously) independently, while adding the right amount of breath pressure. If the vocal folds are compressed too much and you're adding too much pressure, you can hurt them. You should never do what makes your throat feel sore. Practising what is called a growl or low scream is a good way to start, because you learn to compress the cartilages, while relaxing the vocal folds, so that they don't produce any tone. And it's a good training for breath support. It feels very different from vocal fry or shouting. In the next step you can get into rasp starting from a low scream by letting the vocal folds approach just a bit, so that they produce a tone. Maybe also relax the cartilages a little bit. Approaching the vocal folds is what you do when you move from no sound to a breathy voice to a full voice to a mix of voice and vocal fry (= the soft distortion Freya uses, also used by basses to sing lower) to vocal fry. Practising this will help you getting control over the closure of the vocal folds when singing with grid. Once you know how it's done, a good exercise is to move forth and back between a clean and a raspy sound starting at different closures of the vocal folds. Try to get as close as possible to the point, where the flip happens, so that only a slight adjustment of the cartilages is needed to do it. In order to maintain rasp you need a higher breath pressure. So when you are singing with rasp, you could just reduce the breath pressure while maintaining the exact same throat position and you will slip back into the clean tone, so that you can check how close your vocal folds are. Depending on the position of the vocal folds and the cartilages, different resonances - different types of distortion will occur.
Really interesting to hear how you apply this and how it works within your set, thanks for the honesty it helps us to understand better, you're ace! XXXX
Blood is never good, not even if you doing that hardcore metal screaming stuff. Regardless of your vocal style, your throat should never hurt and you should definitely not be spitting out blood.

THANK YOU! I was trained in opera and choir but never learned how to sing any other way so I had no idea how anyone was getting that rasp. It seems like it came naturally to everyone but me. Thank you for explaining this. I really appreciate it!
Yes! Great advice. So many rock/pop singers I see on a regular basis are killing their voices. There are ways to rough up the sound but still keeping the good technique so we are able to sing for our whole lives! Thats my goal anyway, and I appreciate your videos! Xo
I have a natural raspy voice whenever I sing and like this was in my reccomend and I've always hated my raspy voice but seeing ppl in the comments just made me love my voice 0_0
Thank you, that is great advice. I want to sing The Beatles version of Twist And Shout. They usually performed it as a closing number on stage, as John’s cords needed a lie down afterwards!
Your clear instructions helped me so much. I tried it across almost an entire octave and I managed without feeling any heaviness afterwards. Thank you so much!
Use the nasal voice "meeeeehhh, I don't wannaaaa!" to produce heat. Incorperate that into the song. It doesn't hurt, and the effect is the same. It's what Brian uses to hit those notes, not vocal fry. This is evident in the way he uses an "h" sound before most lines to prevent the voice from being damaged.
Omg... I did the funniest thing. I was trying the technique while singing "I can't help falling in love" by Elvis Presley, and instead of saying "Wise men say" I said "I can't sing" lol!
Hey, everyone, you can also add some "bottom" to your fry raspiness by using your false cords. Practice Mongolian throat singing to get that sound, then mix with this technique!
How about just doing the way most good sounding vocalists (Cobain, Axl Rose, Steward) do it... sing the fucking song balls to the walls, exhaling as much air on the vocal chords as you need in order to get the sound you need, with zero regard for wear and tear.
I’ve been using what she did 6:00 for 5 months now actually and I just saw this vid and I was like, “HEY I DO THAT. 😂” I do it to make myself sound like Paul Williams from the Temptations (for anyone wondering I’m primarily a bass but I can go up to a low baritone.)

I don't see how Janis had damaged vocal chords? she had a fantasic range and was able to do soft vocals (summer time) which if her vocal folds were damaged she wouldn't be able to do/control. I think Janis was naturally husky, if you listen to her early recordings of country/bluegrass stuff she had already set in place a technique to give her a rasp, very high faulsetto with a fry added, sounds very compressed but all the same very impressive.
Freya, your channel is pure gold. I can't wait to see all your videos. Love your teaching and your voice so much. Thank God you exist. ❤from Albania 🇦🇱
Look you are not using "rasp" here, you are using "fry" to simulate rasp. Rasp by definition is bad for your voice and cannot be obtained in a healthy way. You wanna sound raspy you have to push a lot of air through your vocal chords, no way around it (think: Kurt Cobain, Axl Rose, Rod Stewart etc.). You can use the fry effect to obtain a similar sound, but the only problem is that it doesn't have the same "power" that exhaling all that air through your vocal chords has. It literally sounds similar, but with less power and intensity. If you want to sing a Nirvana song and for it to sound right, you have to wear out your voice a little. Otherwise, using fry to simulate the sound will leave the song sounding "without balls".
OMG, I've been looking for a video like this for like 3 months, I constantly found my self worried for the health of my vocal cords, this video will be useful for the rest of my life, thank you.
Thanks for this. I spend a lot of time singing super clean to protect my voice but am looking to get a bit of edge on it, now. These tips are really helpful!
Abdullah when people refer to the damage it's not in reference to a natural rasp, but to the rasp that comes from overdoing it and singing heavily which causes damage

Basically.... If you feel any amount of discomfort, you are doing it wrong. Which is actually a great feedback mechanism. But as she says, don't over do it, if you are singing metal songs that are completely screaming, try to break it up by adding in clean sections to give your chords a break.
Well, this is the soft version of rasp. It has its applications, but you can do it much more rough and powerful without killing your voice, if you're using compression of the tissue above the vocal folds.
It doesn't damage your voice but with time it starts sounding a bit raspier when you speak (which is not necessarily a bad thing, at least not for me) and that's why many people prefer doing this, or maybe they just can't do the other thing
@@victoriapd8001 I've been doing the other thing for years and my voice is as clean as ever. It can't do anything to my vocal folds, because it does not change the way I use my vocal folds. Yes, there is a danger of doing it wrong and damaging the vocal folds.
Honestly, you are using vocal fry to simulate Janis' rasp and that is 100% not what she is doing. When you listen to her sing, can you not tell the difference between what you are doing and what she is doing? It's concerning to me that you are giving lessons on this. It's very misleading to those who are listening to this video that may not know better. The rasp comes from a seperate section of the throat and is caused by a combination of things. The false folds higher in the throat are what manipulates the sound. It is NOT caused by exaggerated vocal chord closure as you describe. Joplin's Plant-esque blues feel only compliments this effect.
Yeah I do remember you clarifying that in the video. Wasn't trying to be harsh, I guess I just don't see the effectiveness in emulating a raspy sound by substituting a technique that doesn't accomplish the end result desired. But to each their own! I see that you're just trying to help others not injure themselves and that is a good intention to have. Stay cool, good luck in the future!
Dunkel Ulv I don't think it was natural listen to a lot of Janis early, recording she was a blues singer loads of Blues standard she done in her early 20's show that it wasn't until she joined big brother she started to sing like that on cheap thrills I think it was easy for her to do but she didn't always have that ability
How do I know if I already did permanent damage on my vocal cords? I started out singing raspy, for years. And recently I found my self not being able to sing clear, at all. Can I revert back to singing clear?
I came here after trying to sing the "They'll never ever take us alive" part of " Till We Die" by Slipknot lol. I did it right once by accident, but haven't been able to do it again for months, this helped lot.
Freya, i feel you ought to know that I have been trying to do this for ages and when I watched ur vid I succeeded for the first time implementing vocal fry on higher notes!
I can't do it.... I'm doing exactly as she says and it doesn't sound like that. I sound like a male opera singer trying to go high pitch. I HATE my voice.

You wanna sound raspy you have to push a lot of air through your vocal chords, no way around it (think: Kurt Cobain, Axl Rose, Rod Stewart etc.). It literally sounds similar, but with less power and intensity. If you want to sing a Nirvana song and for it to sound right, you have to wear out your voice a little. Otherwise, using fry to simulate the sound will leave the song sounding "without balls".

Am proud to have a natural raspy voice
do vocal fry
it really does help to turn your voice raspy and high pitched at the same time
Honestly, you are using vocal fry to simulate Janis' rasp and that is 100% not what she is doing.
Stay cool, good luck in the future!
what's your technique of choice from real rasp voice? (not a "simulation")?
Yep i was questioning this video because fry vocal and rasp or grit techniques are different from what I've seen in rock music.
Ty John i want to sing cleaner but i have a raspy voice
thank u so much!! kisses
How do I know if I already did permanent damage on my vocal cords? I started out singing raspy, for years. And recently I found my self not being able to sing clear, at all. Can I revert back to singing clear?
Lol my sister ran into the room and ask if am ok when practice... very helpful keep it up
I came here after trying to sing the "They'll never ever take us alive" part of " Till We Die" by Slipknot lol. I did it right once by accident, but haven't been able to do it again for months, this helped lot.

This should be called “How to sound like Rainbow Dash “
I was waiting for her to do an actual demonstration of her raspy singing 😂
This is a PHENOMENAL TIP!!!!
Freya, i feel you ought to know that I have been trying to do this for ages and when I watched ur vid I succeeded for the first time implementing vocal fry on higher notes!
I just wanna sound scarier when I threaten someone
i’m trying to sound like janis joplin but this made me realize i can do a kick ass metal growl x
I can't do it.... I'm doing exactly as she says and it doesn't sound like that. I sound like a male opera singer trying to go high pitch. I HATE my voice.
Wow. You have mad telnet..... Amazing cool. Skills 100%.
