T.Rex - Wembley Empire Pool, 18th March 1972 (Evening Concert)

  • On 18 March 1972 T.Rex performed two sell-out concerts at the Empire Pool, Wembley (capacity 10,000 per show). They were only the second group to play there - the first having been Led Zeppelin in November 1971 - other than for multi-artist NME awards and charity shows in the 1960s.
The Empire Pool was originally just that - a swimming pool built for the 1934 Empire Games.
Having had three number one singles (with two more at number two) and the Electric Warrior album at number one for eight weeks either side of Christmas 1971, T.Rex were the hottest group in the UK.
Both concerts featured 10 songs, mixing the hits (Jeepster, Telegram Sam, Hot Love, Get It On) with b-sides and album tracks performed by the band (Cadilac, Baby Strange) and as an acoustic interlude (Spaceball Ricochet, Girl and Cosmic Dancer). The encore was a version of Summertime Blues, originally by Eddie Cochran - an artist whose look and music greatly influenced Bolan as a young man.
Both concerts were filmed by an Apple Films crew of five, led by Marc’s big mate Ringo Starr. Meanwhile producer Tony Visconti was recording the sound in the Rolling Stones’ mobile recording facility parked outside.
The concerts shot that day are the only surviving professionally filmed complete T.Rex concerts, representing a unique moment in the history of rock music and revealing the extraordinary power and success of Marc Bolan and T.Rex.

Man this is so cool. I was born in the wrong time. I wish I was 18 during this period of music...Pink floyd, Zep, Eagles, Heart, Bowie and T REX...what a time for music.

The first concert I ever attended, and the tickets were 75p from Harlequin records. The Emperor Rosko and thousands of screaming girls, a magical night, never to be repeated. Bolan’s voice gives me shivers to this day. He was a charismatic showman

Went to this gig in 1972 with my mate Peter Stewart. Can’t believe it’s now 48 years ago. The satin jackets were everywhere, but I drew the line at the trousers! The main thing I remember is the 80% female audience...which was very pleasant to be amongst at that age. The tube journey home was rammed with T Rex fans, all singing their heads off all the way. We had no idea, of course, how lucky I was to be a kid then. I saw Queen, Bowie, Genesis, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Sparks, The Faces and Roxy Music over an 18 month period. We were so spoiled for talent back then. And it was affordable. Happy days and happy memories. RIP Marc...

Lucky you!. Marc was a musical genius, a great performer and a poet. T Rex was unique with almost every song to remember, but also representative in a way of what was going on at the turn 1970s. As to Billy Liar, although this film was made in 1963, just a few years before T Rex was formed, it tells a different story with different music.

A month into my Marc journey and i"m almost in tears writing this. Want to cry so bad its friggin weird. I became conscious of Elvis for the first time on Aug 16th 77. If anybody can remember, the tv was all Elvis Elvis Elvis. I asked my mum who he was that day and i became a fan from there. I guess being 7 at the time Marcs death must of passed my consuisness. AS most in UK, we all grew up knowing the hits and my mama always watching him on tv. But i had no idea. My daughter now asks why i keep listening to old music all the time. How can you not with all the crap now. Sorry, bottom line, when i"m sad Marc makes me happy. When i"m happy his music makes me more happy. His voice and sound just takes me back to a safer and warmer time and place were i never want to leave. Futuristic Dragon and Dandy Albums. Just amazing. And i have not seen anybody handle a guitar like that except for Jimi and Prince. im happy i found him but so sorry hes gone. I have this pull to be at the site in September. Ill be there for the first time. Thank You Marc. Top Geezer!!

Would love to back in time and see Marc Bolan. I`m 62 now and can remember 8 track tapes of T Rex. He didn`t even die from drugs or alcohol. He died in a car crash in a car driven by a female friend. He never liked to drive himself because he was afraid of crashing. He was only 29. It happened in London 1977. I can`t even imagine the music he would have made through all the years `till now.

Mixed emotions watching this as myself and two friends had tickets for the evening performance. I have to say I was never a fan of either the man or his music though I did buy a copy of Ride a White Swan when it came out. Looking back at this all these years later I still have not changed my mind and grown to like him but recognise he took down barriers and was highly creative in what he did in terms of his music and his style and stage craft. It was a time I lived through and should be thankful I had the opportunity to see him and many others in the raw. I can now see much more clearly his guitar skills and it would have been good to see how these developed as he grew into new musical ventures and challenges. On the night itself the noise of the screaming was intense and rang in my ears for days. So much so the sound quality for the audience was pretty awful. Thankfully this film has captured what it was all about and given many the chance to see and hear the reality of the event - warts and all in all its glory. Thank you for posting and bringing so many memories back.

Iggy Pop went to that mythical concert, back in 1972.
He said Marc was truly special. At the peak of his powers, Marc was unbeatable.
Only Bowie matched him. A class act.

@@mumsow Apparently Ig walked from Kensington where he
was staying, to see Marc. Back then, he wasn't known outside of his
cult following. He had been invited to England through his dear friend
Bowie, to form a band. The rest is history.

@@robjones2408 Your'e right, he was invited to England by Bowie, but it wasn't to form a band, it was to record a solo album, which went on to be 'Raw Power'. He had already been in the band, The Stooges, and had released two albums, 'The Stooges' and 'Funhouse'. They had started to fall apart, because of the lack of success they were experiencing, and other issues, but Iggy, who had the bands guitarist James Williamson with him, got the other members, the brothers Ron and Scott Asheton, to join them in London for the recording. I think it was because the session musos they were using, weren't working out. Bowie, I think, mixed it, and he may also have played sax and keyboards as well, although I'm not sure. The band then reformed and toured as Iggy And The Stooges.

My first album was 'The Slider', purchased in '75, three years after it's release, when I was eleven years old. Still got it. I reckon it's one of the best albums of all time. Listening with headphones, it takes you on a journey with it's great mix of heavy electric stuff or slower acoustic stuff. His guitar work on all the various guitar tracks was sublime. I love the blue and red label with his image on it. As an added bonus, because of some mix up at the record company, there was a poster from the 'Tanx' album inside. Still got that too.

Fabulous document. Just there, the raw power of guitars, drums, amplifiers, the frenzy, the chaos of a live gig in full throttle, turning the amps up as it goes along, the fans on stage, the attention of roadies. The fans driven crazy, great stuff and you can clearly see where Page got some of his moves from. Thanks for this very rare and terrific music archive🎸🎤
