T.Rex - Wembley Empire Pool, 18th March 1972 (Evening Concert)

- On 18 March 1972 T.Rex performed two sell-out concerts at the Empire Pool, Wembley (capacity 10,000 per show). They were only the second group to play there - the first having been Led Zeppelin in November 1971 - other than for multi-artist NME awards and charity shows in the 1960s.
The Empire Pool was originally just that - a swimming pool built for the 1934 Empire Games.
Having had three number one singles (with two more at number two) and the Electric Warrior album at number one for eight weeks either side of Christmas 1971, T.Rex were the hottest group in the UK.
Both concerts featured 10 songs, mixing the hits (Jeepster, Telegram Sam, Hot Love, Get It On) with b-sides and album tracks performed by the band (Cadilac, Baby Strange) and as an acoustic interlude (Spaceball Ricochet, Girl and Cosmic Dancer). The encore was a version of Summertime Blues, originally by Eddie Cochran - an artist whose look and music greatly influenced Bolan as a young man.
Both concerts were filmed by an Apple Films crew of five, led by Marc’s big mate Ringo Starr. Meanwhile producer Tony Visconti was recording the sound in the Rolling Stones’ mobile recording facility parked outside.
The concerts shot that day are the only surviving professionally filmed complete T.Rex concerts, representing a unique moment in the history of rock music and revealing the extraordinary power and success of Marc Bolan and T.Rex.
Man this is so cool. I was born in the wrong time. I wish I was 18 during this period of music...Pink floyd, Zep, Eagles, Heart, Bowie and T REX...what a time for music.
The first concert I ever attended, and the tickets were 75p from Harlequin records. The Emperor Rosko and thousands of screaming girls, a magical night, never to be repeated. Bolan’s voice gives me shivers to this day. He was a charismatic showman
Went to this gig in 1972 with my mate Peter Stewart. Can’t believe it’s now 48 years ago. The satin jackets were everywhere, but I drew the line at the trousers! The main thing I remember is the 80% female audience...which was very pleasant to be amongst at that age. The tube journey home was rammed with T Rex fans, all singing their heads off all the way. We had no idea, of course, how lucky I was to be a kid then. I saw Queen, Bowie, Genesis, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Sparks, The Faces and Roxy Music over an 18 month period. We were so spoiled for talent back then. And it was affordable. Happy days and happy memories. RIP Marc...
Wow, jealous.
What a line up... Was born too late man... Rock on Marc RIP
I too was there ! It was 10 days after my 15th Birthday and my Mum paid for the ticket as a present :)

Is is true the tickets were 75p ?
Happy Christmas 🎄
You are one lucky person...😁 R.I.P. Marc Bolan🙏❤️
a time when the Great in Great Britain meant something !
When Britain was Great.
So this is now March of 2022. That was 50 years ago. I wonder what he would think of people still grooving to this. Its all still incredible!
Да! 50 лет! Но звучит и в 2023❤!!!
that his music had longevity because it was original and great?
2024. I am here watching this. Love you Marc.❤️
It's incredible looking back to that time. I was a glam crazy eight year old boy with a Raleigh Chopper. I knew nothing. Now 2023, and I'd go through it all again in a shot. Grim sometimes, but uncomplicated
me too ,i had a chopper 3 speed :D
This is very cool I bought the T Rex album in 1970 I was 18 years old… today I turn 71 I finally actually get to see Marc Bolan and TRex live Onstage even if it was 53 years ago….thank you….peace
I envy 18 year old you Bill, you legend.
62 and still feel like a teenager. Absolutely brilliant
Me too!..I was born Oct 59.
Me too! '57 Cold War child, I was..
Yeah, wasn`t he just great? The band too. A great representation of the excitement, originality and energy that became Bowie and then punk, but Mark was in there first.
One of the few who still sound good and relevant all these years later. Regards from this 67 years old.
me toooo
We boomers knew how to boogie! If Marc was around today he'd probably write the Boomer Boogie!
46 years ago today we lost a great rock god !!!! Marc Bolan , your star still shines so brightly and your musical legacy lives on , it never dates , today will be my marc bolan day , 24 hours of non stop Bolan Boogie in celebration of the man and his music !!!! KALMIYH ❤❤❤
I was there at 16 with my 16 year old girlfriend. I remember seeing Ringo Starr in the orchestra pit in front of the stage and I note that this film was produced and directed by him.
This should answer the question why music lovers keep Mr. Bolan deep in their hearts. Thank you.
💘
I'm there somewhere 14 year old lad
No autotune, no backing tracks, just live music as it should be heard-fantastic!
The girls in the crowd are now Grandmas and I bet they all kept a little Marc in their hearts.
Some kept a little Marc someplace else that night
64 Aussie grandma finally !!! I want my childhood back
I was there , my first gig ever ..Mark Bolan and T.Rex were Big in the day..a still sound good 51 years later..
The performance of Hot Love, with all the kids losing their shit is absolutely transcendent. I too am losing my shit.
You can only understand the vibes of these times truly if you were young at that time.❤
What a great gift for the end of a miserable year. Watched the afternoon set yesterday, night set today. TOTAL REXTASY!!!
I was at this concert .The atmosphere was amazing.Marc was such a beautiful person it broke my heart when he died in the car accident.
But we will always have his music and it amazes me that it never feels dated. Also love the film Billy Liar where T-Rex music was used
throughout. We will never forget you Marc.
Lucky you!. Marc was a musical genius, a great performer and a poet. T Rex was unique with almost every song to remember, but also representative in a way of what was going on at the turn 1970s. As to Billy Liar, although this film was made in 1963, just a few years before T Rex was formed, it tells a different story with different music.

👍
Thank you for the playlist
i love spaceball ricochet sm
Bill Legend and especially Steve Currie don’t get the credit they deserve. His bass lines added to those songs
Way ahead of his time. Such a shame, God bless him!
My first live music gig ... 18 and loving life. Xxx
Only ever one bolan ...just loved him 50 years ago and still do ....keeping a bit of marc in my heart ALWAYS ...for me you live on forever
A true icon who passed to soon one of the best guitar players who never gets mentioned ❤
✌️ Electric Warrior fans!
Marc and t.rex were just superb in concert total cosmic rock what a concert still so brilliant 50 years on !
A month into my Marc journey and i"m almost in tears writing this. Want to cry so bad its friggin weird. I became conscious of Elvis for the first time on Aug 16th 77. If anybody can remember, the tv was all Elvis Elvis Elvis. I asked my mum who he was that day and i became a fan from there. I guess being 7 at the time Marcs death must of passed my consuisness. AS most in UK, we all grew up knowing the hits and my mama always watching him on tv. But i had no idea. My daughter now asks why i keep listening to old music all the time. How can you not with all the crap now. Sorry, bottom line, when i"m sad Marc makes me happy. When i"m happy his music makes me more happy. His voice and sound just takes me back to a safer and warmer time and place were i never want to leave. Futuristic Dragon and Dandy Albums. Just amazing. And i have not seen anybody handle a guitar like that except for Jimi and Prince. im happy i found him but so sorry hes gone. I have this pull to be at the site in September. Ill be there for the first time. Thank You Marc. Top Geezer!!
For one night I was a roadie for T.Rex at Southend, the starting act was 'The damned'. Marc was charming to me and my friend especially as we drank his bottle of Rum...!
Totally ahead of his time
Love it , raw live music
This guy was way ahead of his time. His style, good looks, crazy good talent and cocksure attitude was the very template of a rock 'n roll front man. You see his style even emulated, unconsciously or not, in many current bands.
This is incredible. I was there age 14 and the magic of Marc and T.Rex has never left me. A one off. What an amazing historical recording. Thank you 💕
how can we know you were there ? there's a thousand people always claiming they were here there and everywhere and showing off ...bah fuck off
EL soli Let her have it. Bigger battles to wage. Nice to hear she had a little fun
@@elsolitario1741 mean, cynical, way, way beyond skeptical.
you know, there were a lot of 14 year old Brits loco about T Rex back then.
Sad to say, I , and too many other American teenagers at the time, didn't really T Rex outside of Bang a Gong.
I was 13 and listened to TRex, Kinks and Zappa. People said I was weird and that was the Hippies. My friends listened to the soft rock crap. Black Sabbath fucked them up.
@@elsolitario1741 fucking jealous coz you weren’t
Most of them who are still alive are well into their middle 60's now...like me...'hapPy summer T.REX days'! - :)
This has made 2020 for me,,,, what a gem. This is like having a time machine,,, 1972,,, ROCK ON.
Marc was wearing a Tophat before Slash was!!What comes around Goes around!!!!!
Marc Bolan / T. Rex, was war das für eine Hammer Musik. Klasse Live Performance. Leider zu früh gegangen. Die Stimme ist der Wahnsinn. R. I. P.
All of us 70s teenagers were truly blessed. We didn't know it then, but we were coming of age in the greatest period on earth for humankind.
YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT
The 60s were life blood, but we suckled on the teet of the 70s,,,,dam fine time,,,,dam fine
@@1369buddy to look back makes me sad of what has become of this so called modern innovative world.these are crazy times but i will die knowing i enjoyed the best of post war britain.
Yes we are
Marc on his LP guitar with amazing voice, two few percussionists, bass, n big amps. Incredible
What a great band amazing bass player everyone amazing
This concert is up to the standards of the groups of the time! it's my adolescence coming back to life!.
An absolutely wonderful piece of musical history about my main man.
One of the best live concert movies ever!!! Absolutely timeless. The sound, the moves, the feelings. Fabulous... that's rock'n'roll...
A better world, a better time, better people.
The world is exactly the same as it's always been, you were just young. Life always seems better when you're young and all is new to you. The kids today will be saying the same thing you are in 30 years about their generation, just as their kids will in another 30 years.
That bit when he ran his tambourine up and down the guitar - wow! Marc forever!!
Live and raw , 70s no bullshit music, seem to have lost our way , it's only when you are in the twilight years can you look back and remember that era , bugger all money but great music 🎼🥁🎸🗣
Not a dry seat in the house
Sometimes I wish time had stopped around this period. Magic!
Sometimes? All the time.
Anna, All the time? Me, in my dream to!!!
Definitely 🥰😁
But alas time, as humans identify with, eternally moves.....yep.
This has got me hooked, as a kid in the 70s this guy was just someone that older girls lusted after. I payed no attention whatsoever to these type of group, purely because they were popular... I think. Now I'm in my 50s I can now see what all the fuss was about. I can't stop listening to this concert. Thank you so much for putting this up I love it.
Without question the best time to be young, absolute magic
The bestest time
Im not even a die hard fan per sae ,but i love hot love, what an incredible tune.....
I was born in 1992, so.....very very late to the scene haha!
My mother was a massive T rex and Marc Bolan fan....that's how it started for me. I grew up with them
Fantastic quality amazing concert first time seeing T-Rex live.
outrageously fabulous.
taken far to soon , he would have been a global icon , with the likes of bowie , elton etc
This was my first T-Rex concert aged 12 brilliant great too see it again
This is so great!!! Marc was such a doll 😍🤩
I have always loved T-rex.What great rockers from days gone by. Historical.
And still rockin' just as they had in the 70s, glad my Father n Uncle loved listening to music of countless genres.
Music is LIFE 💛
So many great forgotten bass players from back then & Steve Currie was one of the best ever!!.
100% agree , and by all accounts, a very humble , nice guy ❤️
He was certainly shredding here
First time I see this icon of my youth playing a concert - as a 66 born I was a little too young to attend one of his concerts but knew his music from my earliest days cause my older sister played it at any time.. his music stil had a great influence on what we were listening in our teen days nearly a decade later and alongside ccr, the quo or thin lizzy rocked us at every party ..great artist, thanks for uploading!!
FIFTY TWO YEARS AGO I WAS FEEL SO ..... I WAS LIKE MARC, I WAS LIKE GET IT ON & bang a gong, THE SLIDER ~ ~ ~
Thank You Ringo for suggesting and capturing this concert for history to have.
So glad to see this waiting for me when i opened UA-cam this evening. Put a huge smile on my face. I love T-Rex and have never seen them live.
Amazing concert footage ,been a T Rex fan for years ,he died way to young ,RIP ❤
fabulous absolutely fabulous. Visconti was/is a genius. he heard things that no one could hear.
I feel a door just opened to 1970. What a fantastic film. Marc Bolan was just an incredible musician. Hats off to Ringo Starr for his work on this film. 👏👍❤️
Would love to back in time and see Marc Bolan. I`m 62 now and can remember 8 track tapes of T Rex. He didn`t even die from drugs or alcohol. He died in a car crash in a car driven by a female friend. He never liked to drive himself because he was afraid of crashing. He was only 29. It happened in London 1977. I can`t even imagine the music he would have made through all the years `till now.
At work on nightshift & i,ve found this 🤘 headphones in,sorted, what a band, was born in 69,so didnt go to gigs till early 80,s,T Rex looked & sounded amazing,Marc Bolan was a legend, brilliant days, sadly the concert experience is now a different thing.
my greatest star...my greatest inspiration....the man with magic in his head....Marc Bolan rocks on forever....cosmic love to the cosmic dancer, his family, the boys in the band, the wizard that was and is Tony Visconti....and all the fans round the globe...xxx
Mixed emotions watching this as myself and two friends had tickets for the evening performance. I have to say I was never a fan of either the man or his music though I did buy a copy of Ride a White Swan when it came out. Looking back at this all these years later I still have not changed my mind and grown to like him but recognise he took down barriers and was highly creative in what he did in terms of his music and his style and stage craft. It was a time I lived through and should be thankful I had the opportunity to see him and many others in the raw. I can now see much more clearly his guitar skills and it would have been good to see how these developed as he grew into new musical ventures and challenges. On the night itself the noise of the screaming was intense and rang in my ears for days. So much so the sound quality for the audience was pretty awful. Thankfully this film has captured what it was all about and given many the chance to see and hear the reality of the event - warts and all in all its glory. Thank you for posting and bringing so many memories back.
This is beautiful, pure rock and roll
ABSOLUTELY
I'm very pleased I saw t rex on tour at that time it was brilliant 😁🙏
Is it just Me . I keep on hitting the like button when I've already have ... 😀
Whoever put this up, basically, thank you.
Yes 🥰
Thank's for that journey in time rest in peace Marc,we still remeber You.
Iggy Pop went to that mythical concert, back in 1972.
He said Marc was truly special. At the peak of his powers, Marc was unbeatable.
Only Bowie matched him. A class act.
Omg I didn't know Iggy Pop was there.. Wow!
@@mumsow Apparently Ig walked from Kensington where he
was staying, to see Marc. Back then, he wasn't known outside of his
cult following. He had been invited to England through his dear friend
Bowie, to form a band. The rest is history.
@@robjones2408 fabulous 💙
Marc and David, childhood friends, we miss you both sooo much 😥❣️ old good times when everything was fine 🙏
@@robjones2408 Your'e right, he was invited to England by Bowie, but it wasn't to form a band, it was to record a solo album, which went on to be 'Raw Power'. He had already been in the band, The Stooges, and had released two albums, 'The Stooges' and 'Funhouse'. They had started to fall apart, because of the lack of success they were experiencing, and other issues, but Iggy, who had the bands guitarist James Williamson with him, got the other members, the brothers Ron and Scott Asheton, to join them in London for the recording. I think it was because the session musos they were using, weren't working out. Bowie, I think, mixed it, and he may also have played sax and keyboards as well, although I'm not sure. The band then reformed and toured as Iggy And The Stooges.
I need to get more into this band and Marc Bolan. Love their music.
Really, a super special T.Rex concert, sure the history of rock music.
Yes most definitely 😁
I never knew Marc was such a good guitarist.
Keep a little Marc in your heart ♡
Elfin creature expired much to soon.
I always do
So sad such a talent i miss you marc.
One of the great singer song writers,,guitarist of our times,,taken from us way to early,,R.I.P.,,,,Marc Bolan
Enjoying the afternoon listing to this and my day just got better!
Marc was so talented and Good 😊 I know he's still singing watching over his gloglo and his son. Much love to all
T.REX 🥰 Forever 🤩😎
Saw T - Rex at the Mid South Coliseum along with Humble Pie .
Yeah T Rex superb
Those were the days. T.rex ,the kings of Glamrock. The voice of Marc Bolan is unique .
Bowie reigned then knew when to abdicate. Unfortunately Marc didn't.
I love T rex still.
I DID NOT RElISE HOW GOOD A GUITARIST HE WAS ROCK ON
T-REX, moc dobrá kapela!!!!! V 70.letech,kd mě bylo 15.roku jsme tuto kapelu, moc rádi poslouchali! Je škoda, že skončili! Mám pěkně vzpomínky!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Keby sa Mark Bolen nezabil tak by hral do dnes.
My favourite is the guy playing the bongos. He's terrific!
It takes a special guy to wear a tee-shirt with a likeness of himself on it and make it seem like hands-down the coolest ever.
Bolan had an incredible voice. (~);}
My first album was 'The Slider', purchased in '75, three years after it's release, when I was eleven years old. Still got it. I reckon it's one of the best albums of all time. Listening with headphones, it takes you on a journey with it's great mix of heavy electric stuff or slower acoustic stuff. His guitar work on all the various guitar tracks was sublime. I love the blue and red label with his image on it. As an added bonus, because of some mix up at the record company, there was a poster from the 'Tanx' album inside. Still got that too.
My older brother got The Slider when it came out and left it with me when he got married. I have always loved it and it is my favourite T Rex album!
Andy, I can't believe your brother would have left that album behind. He must have been truly smitten to have forgotten about that, but what a score for you. And Blake, thats a painful tale. The thievin' bastard obviously had great taste.
In th right place at the right time....big but never too big in the states everyone seemed to love the guy..gone too soon.
Fabulous document. Just there, the raw power of guitars, drums, amplifiers, the frenzy, the chaos of a live gig in full throttle, turning the amps up as it goes along, the fans on stage, the attention of roadies. The fans driven crazy, great stuff and you can clearly see where Page got some of his moves from. Thanks for this very rare and terrific music archive🎸🎤
Only one word : master piece !!! RIP Marc ........ and thanks for the joy !!! pure love for you !!!
Saw him in Arlington, Texas, near Dallas, where I live not long after this. We just wanted Marc.... He was sooooooooo drunk or stoned. We still enjoyed the show, once he realized we wanted the real deal and wouldn't put up with less than the real Marc. A privilege to have seen him live.
Why was I born too late? I'd have loved to have seen T Rex 😭 Marc was a gorgeous man 😍
Totally awesome human being
I Saw Him LIVE ❤🎉❤😢
