ayyy thank you for the vid! ... when you take us to the back of the unit and talk about the white button for balance / unbalanced operation.... you say its floating ground ...do you mean the cables your using have a floted ground or that white button is actually floating the ground? im asking because im super interested in buying one of these .. i went cheap and got a Makie big knob and its def causing some interference hum.
lt disconnects the ground link between the input and the output. If you connect the balanced output to a non balanced input, you will have no attenuation - no change in level when the level rotary is adjusted...because it's looses the refeence of ground.
Are you able to use outputs 1 & 2 at the same time, I have a subwoofer and set of monitors that I would like to be played together as well as turning the sub off when needed. Is this able to be done?
No, you can't do that. it's one or the other. if you want to do that, consider an active external crossover - like the DBX 223 (silver faceplate) in my rack.
I have to add a note to this original comment, with an apology. I state in this video you CANNOT select both of the output selections at the same time. In fact you can. If you hold one down, you can press the other and it will also latch on, and unlike doing this to the inputs (also possible), it wont cause the problems of combining two signals together without so much as an passive adder. In summary - you should be able to route the input to two different outputs at the same time without problems. You will cause signal problems, and possible damage to your two device output buffers if you do this at the input stage. This is not recommended.
Hi Peter, passive controller means its does not mess with the gain of the Soundcard ? i want to maintain the 0 db all the time on my soundcard, regardless the volume on the baby ram.
What it means is there are no active components, namely op amps or transistors which would require careful design NOT to color or effect the sound. Passive circuits are notorious for being virtually transparent. This unit has less than .2 dB insertion loss.
@@PeterGrenader hi sir ı have ssl 2 interface if ım buy this product and connect with ssl 2 how will ım aproach for monitoring? give full gain ssl 2 and control baby ram? or 0 db gain on ssl 2 amplitude on baby ram? regards...
Hi bro .. if i connect input 1 ( L&R ) then can i get that output 1 ( L&R ) and output 2 ( L&R ) at the same time ?? t to activate 2 different type monitors at the same time is that possible ?
you can get both outputs pairs at once. by holding the selected pushbutton down and then pushing the one that's up. I suppose you could get both input pairs at once in the same way but i would not suggest doing that - at best case that's a passive mixer (if they have summing resistors after that fist switch) or at worse - two signals dead shorted together (which i would be more inclined to believe they did as there is no need for a summing resistor).
@@PeterGrenader One more, if you don't mind: I should be able to mix balanced and unbalanced (TRS / TS) inputs and outputs at the same time without any problrms, right? There is a gound lift switch in the back, that to me seems to imply it's entirely one or the other, but maybe not both at the same time? ???... (m.)
@@marks1427 there is a switch on the back which selects all inputs and outputs as either balanced or unbalanced. (ground lifted) Can't do both bal and unbal at the same time. If you have it set on balanced and go into an unbalanced input afterward, the attenuator wont work - as there is no ground reference.
@@PeterGrenader Thanks. Unfortunately, I already ordered this unit, and it comes in today. I have here the 'Big Knob' by Mackie, and it does allow you to use a combination of balanced and unbalanced inputs / outputs without any problems. Of course, it just has a pot for volume control. I'm a little pissed that there is no USA rep for this unit that could have answered my question earlier. All inquiries are directed to a foreign number in Spain.
@@marks1427 I get it. I know that For future ref - Vintage King sells Heritage, and those guys are more than wiling to spend a few on the phone for people. I highly recommend them. Great outfit. Don't get me started over the commitment involved maintaining balanced signal integrity throughout the entire signal path. It's been a huge pain in my rear. And honestly Mark - i dont know if the effort has been worth the problems. My studio is small. I don't know if there's a cable in it longer than ten feet, and that's for my sub that has RCA connectors lol. Most are in the three foot range and at that point why bother? I am fairly confident you will love this thing once you get it in your hands. I sit there sometimes just staring at it. Tel me how it goes for you.
It’s a terrible design, there is only a little tiny piece of plastic that holds limits the knob, it’s absolutely certain it will fail after a year… it’s well made otherwise but the switch isn’t made for such a huge knob there’s just way too much torque for the plastic to handle so each time you turn the volume down it’s eating through the 1.5mm plastic block… my studio is completely down now until I rewire the monitors or find a replacement…

I was hesitant in buying the Big Knob for that same reason, the price and features are what attracted me to the Baby Ram 2

Yes. i made an error in my commentary in the vid. I had never tried holding one in when i pressed the other, and it works fine.
Slightly weird question: is there a stop when you try to continue turning anticlockwise past negative infinity?
yes. there are only 24 increments.
looking for one of these too ay?
ATCs sounds great here

You can physically push both the output buttons at the same time and they will both engage and pass a signal, yes.

Yup!
This is a stepped attenuator, right?... As opposed to a pot...
yes
