@@yourtap I am interested in this subject though. I have always failed with Java fern. I did hear you say that I need to take the babies off of the main plant and start over with those. Maybe I’ll try again sometime and use that method. Thanks for the fun and interesting content. I always learn something that no one else ever talks about.
@@angiemoore1741 my pleasure! I don't know if other people are intentionally leaving that out or what the deal is. However, yes. You need one of the leaves to spore a baby underwater and that's your plant. Without that it's the same story over and over. I watched mine die over several months thinking they're incapable of pulling off Java Ferns.
@@angiemoore1741 I have used bolbitus in 4 different Aquariums that all had various water, lighting, heating conditions. Everytime it's the same results. They don't do much and are a very thin and straggly plant that stays small with unattractive sporadic leaf growth. All of which appear to do nothing and eventually wither away down to a 3in rhizome with zero leaves after a year. I haven't bothered attempting to notice it germinating to keep it going because I don't like them. Lol Without raising a plant from seedlings; the result is watching the mother plant live out it's lifespan. Remember they are perennials. A year is pretty average. Snipping the rhizomes to make more, only makes more, it doesn't increase it's base lifespan.
I appreciate that. I do continue to post shorts about my new born and family. However, when my wife got pregnant; I put all that energy and focus into her wants and needs. Currently, it all goes to my baby. I will in fact be keeping up with this channel until Nora becomes curious about the hobby and we can rebuild my tanks together. I'm confident she'll enjoy it like Alex. He got older and interests have changed. Girls, and kicking it with kids his own age. Thank you for saying Hi. 🤙
There are many great fertilizers out there. Personally I like Leaf Zone and Easy Green. When it comes to light. You'll learn how much of it your plants enjoy. Every light is different. Your plants will let you know if you're leaving them on too long. Hope that helps . Thank you for your questions.
Glad I found your videos soon after I bought the "easy" plant, Java fern. My one fern has a long rhizome now with lots of leaves! Curious, have you ever put a banana plant in your aquarium? I just got 4 of them, 2 for each tank, and I'm excited to see them grow!
I found this video because my java fern windelov is turning black, and the place I bought it from never mentioned anything about leaving the rhizome unburried, AND I had no idea there was a string wrapped around the ends! I just cut it off and wedged the plants between some sticks, so hopefully it'll bounce back! (or at least propagate babies)
Ok I’m subscribed to several fish UA-camrs and you are the FIRST person to talk about this issue! THANK YOU! I have fancier plants that are doing well but my java ferns keep failing and now I know why! The weird thing is I got this plant four weeks ago and it has one leaf with a bunch of babies and I have a few other leaves that have them too. Did I just get lucky to get this many babies this fast? Something is up with my tank because I got some otocinclus and two immediately began mating and leaving eggs everywhere. I heard otos are hard to breed but the minute I put them in, 2 went right at it 🤣🤣 Can you do a video on anacharis plants and Pogostemon Octopus plants?
You got me cracking up. You're all over the place. Lol I haven't covered Pogostemon before . I know Aquarium Co op sells it. You're the first person to ask. I'll order some. I have covered at least 2 dozen plants. Thanks for saying Hi 🤙
Same, I checked countless videos trying to find plant that cichlids wont destroy... Java Fern, great.. finally a live plant and not those ugly fake ones. I prepare my driftwood, superglued Mr. Java on... then I found this video. I took Mr Java out... and yep STRING! I was pretty pissed, I had no idea. Thank you for this video
Gotta help the youtube bots for you. Aquarium Co-op just sold me java fern wrapped in thread. So it is not just big box stores. I will say that java fern loves potassium I believe. Many all in one fertilizers work well, but Aquarium Co-op does have a really good one in my opinion. Once these plants take off , they will need more food than you are probably providing if not utilizing a fertilizer. ( just started this video, don't know if fertilizer is mentioned.)

Omg🤦♀️ Im here cuz i got a whole bunch of ferns from petco recently & theyre pretty much all dead.. now i know why. I wondered why they were in a bundle and i couldn't see the rhymezones or they had none. My ones b4 this came from amazon and they did great they started to have babies and they died. I was left with half of the original plant and a bunch of babies. I have frogs who love hiding and playing inthem. So i figured getting more would be good. But now theyre ALL dying! All yellow, all have black spots, all losing leaves. But this could be why. But My original babies are pretty much all dead and gone now too since i got these. Mine are also just free floating not attached to anything. I hope this helps when i set them free & take out the dead.
The struggle is real and you can absolutely float ferns. They live off what's in your water column. Actually, the closer to the surface you can keep them the better. They want that extra co2 that happens up there.
It’s like YT read my mind I was literally about to google this and here you go lol I really need to know how to propagate this though mines are thriving 💪🏾

It grows like crazy with Co2. I tried a low tech tank a year ago with it, everything died even the babies that formed on the leaves.
They're a pain in the ass. Personally I think they should be sold as terrarium plants. That makes more sense to me.
