    For what it’s worth, I’ve always watered my Bostons from the bottom up overnight. When the pot feels light, I fill a plastic basin 1/3 full and set the fern in it before I got to bed. In the morning, I place the fern back on its plant stand where it easily drains excess water. Been doing this for 30 years with great success.

    I inherited a Boston fern from my mother (she called it Mr Boston lol). It is over 45 yrs old and has been divided many times. It was the only house plant I ever remember her having. She had the perfect growing conditions both inside and out and it was beautiful. I've had it about 7 yrs now and it's doing OK but not as well as when she had it. It's due to be divided again and I will use your recommendations for the soil mix. Thanks for the tips I hope to keep it going and pass it down to the next generation

    Two years ago we moved and now practically live in the woods. Lowe's had a clearance rack with dying Boston Ferns, big ones, very brown, for $3.99. And I thought, what the heck so I bought 2 of them and put them outside. We get very little sunlight because of all the trees around but we also had ferns growing wild all over the place. I took them out of their pots, transplanted them into bigger pots, added some fresh potting soil, watered them, let them get rained on and sat back waiting for them to die. Little by little they began growing new fronds and by the fall they looked like something you'd pay $50.00 for! They were huge, gorgeous! I brought them into the garage for the winter and someone left the garage door open where they got blasted with icy cold temps, of course they died soon after. This year, 4 new clearance ferns for$3.00 each and they've done the same, tripled in size and are lovely. I'm going to bring them in the house where they will likely perish before they can make it back outside next spring. Wish me luck!

    I live in a very cold part of Canada and my Boston fern has to put up with constant furnace heat on for months. It gets dry looking leaves with scraggly tips. I set it on a tray of pebbles with water underneath them and I do spray it with water twice a week. I water it quite often. In the summer it goes onto my front door step in a sheltered nook and does a lot better. It gets some rain water and filtered sunlight. It really recovers and looks great.

    I usually bottom feed my potted plants,....
    by misting the surface to moisten the top, then I pour food/water into a feeding tray and allow the plant to take up whatever i wants...this uses 2-3 times the amount fed from the top. ( it wont work if you dont wet the top or most top soil first, as it creates a seal that stops the soil from having dry spots)

    Empress, my 4' Boston Fern, was difficult to move this summer, even though 9 doors down, because of winding up all her runners & placed them into 6 med/large containers. Waiting until it's cooler to change her soil. She gets less sun than the other place, & she & my African Violets love their nightly misting, helps them to grow bigger! If you doubt misting: My 3 biggest African Violets were 35" - 37.5", under perfect humidity and lighting conditions. Ferns & Violets grow great together!

      Are your violets indoors in pots? I’m surprised they like misting, since their leaves are fuzzy and hold water which can cause fungus. I tried misting one of mine a couple times a week and the leaves rotted &turned black. Everything I read says to water from the bottom or soak and don’t get leaves wet. Of course, I don’t know how one can do that if ground planted. But congrats if yours are good with it. 😊

    Ferns in general prefer ericaceous compost. Any medium that is light with lots of chipped bark for good aeration is essential. In nature ferns often grow in bark on trees and in leaf mold. Bright indirect light to full shade. Use a clear pot to see if the compost is drying out. Also usually the weight of the pot watered and drying out is a good indication. Use rainwater as tap water can be alkaline and you dont want to make the compost alkaline. Humidity 50% +. Misting is pointless. A cool semi shaded room is ideal.

I have several ferns but one in particular is absolutely thriving. It gets filtered sunlight but the sunroom gets rather warm especially in summer. I water my fern really well once a fortnight because I found they don’t like being too wet. I also found success growing maiden hair fern accidentally. I placed it outside but in a sheltered position because it had merely bugs. I would bottom water it once a month even in the peak of summer and it is honestly the best maiden hair fern I have ever grown. It seems to thrive on neglect.

    Great video thank you my boston fern is about 3x's the size of yours. We had a early start with winter here in st. paul. she got a bit burned by the cold - I bring her outside for the summer. She is slowly back in her indoor garden spot. Humidity is a factor. I have about 15 different fern varieties I grow in my old Victorian House basement. No heat but it stays at the coldest 65f (when it's -40 outside) to about 72F. My indoor garden is actually little furnaces that keep it the rest of the gang warm. I do moisture spray with my "PETRA" sprayer to keep average around 50% - we don't like mold! It's wonderful during the winter because I go into my Tropic flowering mancave after working outside in -40 degree weather. I'm growing oranges, limes, lemons, bananas, 4- types of passion fruit etc in my basement. My winter tropical garden is about 1200 sqft with lighting with LED Daylight/kelvin in shop lights and bulbs. My power usage is only 500 watts. You don't need those expensive power hunger LED lights unless you might be growing the other stuff . This is my 4th season the experiment paid off so much that my garden grew another 100%. FYI If your going to introduce plants in Quarentine them and treat the soil.

    My outdoor ferns,in pots, are gigantic and thriving. We have somewhat hard water here and my plant tips were turning brown. So I read that it was often due to salts in the water staying in the soil, but adding a teaspoon of Aquarium Water Conditioner,per gallon of water every time I water, would help . Yup, that really did the trick. Finally, no more brown tips. 🎉😊🌱

      Gail Cirac I water them a lot!! Also, I don’t have any of them in direct sunlight. They are all under my porches and as long as I keep watering them, they continue to flourish! I don’t buy into the whole waiting till the dirt is dry thing. Some people would say I overwater but my plants show how much they thrive with the water they get. I soak them pretty much every other day and they have holes in the bottom so they drain, but ferns live water...and I tried waiting a week to water one time and they started doing horribly. I would highly suggest watering them a lot in a pot that drains good. Hope this helps!!! 😀

  • @bkrbkrl
    @bkrbkrl 4 роки тому +5

    An extremely useful tool to get watering right is a moisture meter. Far more accurate than a finger and especially useful for tight-in-a-pot plants with crowded stems like ferns. I consistently over-watered until I bought one and started using it.
    I have a black thumb with most ferns, especially Bostons for some reason. Not sure if I will try again. They die mid winter. Most likely guess would be too low humidity, since I don't run a humidifier.

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  4 роки тому +1

      Agreed, they can be quite helpful but also somewhat finicky - if you have a good suggestion on those, lmk

    • @bkrbkrl
      @bkrbkrl 4 роки тому +4

      @@epicgardening They are not accurate in chunky mixes. I also advise that people buy two to compare and catch if one of them seems to be malfunctioning. I have used one since 2011 and it is for moisture only: not the ones with multi-functions or a light or any other "bells and whistles." It is still working like a charm for me. Like any sensing equipment, the tip should be wiped clean and it should not be banged around.
      Many people believe their unit is malfunctioning when they place it in different areas of the pot and it reads different each time. That is because unless you are using a very uniform potting mix, moisture levels WILL be different within the pot. It is normal for these readings to occur.
      The moisture meter finds moisture pockets at the center bottom of a pot, something no finger can reach. This prevents over-watering.

    I have two Boston Ferns that I got from the home center last spring. I hung both plants under the eve of my covered front porch. They looked great and added some nice curb appeal to my home. Soon, several house wrens nested in the plants over the summer which made it very difficult to water. When the weather started getting cooler, I left them outside too long. They have since been inside and the birds are no longer an impediment. Now they both look scraggly. There are two or three healthy new shoots but the surface of the soil is just a tangled mess of dried fronds. I have cleaned up all of the dried and dead fronds but the cut stems in the soil remain. Is there any hope for saving these two plants? If so, What should I do to revive them?

HOWEVER, what do I do because all of the tips of my macho are brown. Not all of the foliage but all of the tips of the fronds. Can I trim off the tips and still have the entire frond keep growing? Or, once the tip is gone, will I have to cut the entire frond off? It is 3 feet tall and has always been happy but I am finding random yellow leaves on some of the fronds and then the tips I just mentioned. Can I send you pics?

    I have a little wild fern that I hacked out of the ground in Jan; it started out with only three fronds and a bundle of damaged roots, so I was fully expecting it to die. I just wanted a plant that could survive my low-light dorm room, however, seems it still wanted more light because when I brought it home during lockdown and put it in full sunlight, it really started growing. It's about 4x its original size, with new baby fronds coming out regularly, and overall doing pretty well considering it's my first real plant, and it started out with a disadvantage. Humidity is still the main problem, we live in a semi-desert climate with temps easily reaching 40°C so I hope my baby does okay inside with the air conditioner on in the coming summer. I don't have anywhere else to go with her 😔
