My son and I have been trying to figure out why a little java fern floating from a tank at a mom-n-pop store can do so much better than a beautiful "plant" in a tube when planted our tanks. While listening to your comments, I'm checking off everything you are saying is true with my Java Fern. After keeping them for about six months, today I find the tightly wound string. I thought I removed all the black string when I first bought my huge Java fern but after this video, I checked and saw some were still attached. I also had them buried in the sand. When I pulled them out, a foul smell was released, so the roots were definitely rotting. Thank you for this video! You saved me from totally throwing my tank out of wack! I bought this fake resin coral decoration and I’m using it like a vase in the aquarium for these. As long as they aren’t buried in the sand in that ok? The coral decoration is kind of handy as it’s holding them in place separately without using glue
So the roots for these ferns are like appendages. They're meant to attach themselves to other plants or objects. Like epiphytes. Their goal is to be elevated in the water column. The nutrients are absorbed through the "Rhizome" that vine the leaves are growing from the top and roots from the bottom. FYI, they'll grow on anything. Your decorations you bought are great to use. Glad I fell down the rabbit hole and discovered this video and your channel! Bought some Java swords a few weeks into my cycle and they were rapidly degrading. Rescued 6 rhizomes bunded with a half foot of black string, hoping for a rebound!!
Oh wow i judtordered 25 java ferns windelov came in potted, i stick all of them in between small hole of rocks and woods, but never knew i have to take off the strings..now i have to take all of them out one by one and remove the string or they all going to die, thank you so much!
These plants aren't aquatic plants yet. They were grown in tubs and when you convert them to underwater. They lose those roots and grow new ones that have adapted to underwater growth. You're helping the process move along quicker. Hope that helps 🤙
@@JamesDeGaris , correct. Their leaves will melt off as well. Nearly the entire plant makes a complete change. The only original part will be their rhizome.
@@JamesDeGaris also not all plants can do this and some don't like the process at all and may completely die. So don't think that you did something wrong if that happens. The process is extremely stressful for the plant.
The leaves are going to die at that point. However, if you snip that leaf loose and let it float for a couple weeks. It'll produce little ferns directly off a loose dying leaf. It's pretty amazing. 🤙
@@yourtap thank you. I think I'll have to do that. Actually mine don't have black holes yet. They looked like they did but there more progressively translucent.
If you don't have direct pressure on the roots and they are free to attach themselves; larger stones would be preferable unless you don't mind them connecting to piles of stones permanently. It's more of a cosmetic decision on your part. Hope that helps 🤙
Holy crap i just planted mine yesterday with it all raveled. The container said to just plant it. I guess im doing an extra water change this week and fixing that up!
@@yourtap I went from 3 good sized ferns to 12 single leaf plants and three 2 leaf plants... Lol I tied the bigger one to rocks and the rest or floating around now
@@Justintheinsane coincidentally I updated this video yesterday. Which is something I do when a video reaches a year, to add any missing prevalent facts. One of those leaves will produce you a plant. But yes, all those leaves and any rhizomes with leaves are going to melt into nothing. Lol
Keep the babies. The fern they're growing off of will die. Then you'll need several years of patience because it takes that long for them to grow full size underwater. Hope that helps and unfortunately it takes longer than one would anticipate.
Well you know what, this maybe the best reply i have ever received not funny tricks that wont work but just add to my stress. Now i know that i will not have fern anytime soon in my tank so will put swords in their place till they grow . Also are they affected by high lighting? i Have a powerful light for my carpets while at the same time tryimg to grow fernz
@@RandB_Aquatics , when it comes to light and the plants you put in there. You will notice overtime that some will thrive and others will die. It makes things more difficult trying to juggle lighting for different plants. Try lots of plants. The one's that make it are perfect for your tank. Thanks for your questions my friend 🤙
It would be nice if the containers for those plants had directions on them because I myself am guilty of taking those poor leaves out of the tube and jamming them into gravel. I cringe by typing that out. I know how to deal with Java ferns now but that’s a total beginner mistake made partially by the company who grows those plants.
So sad I'm a beginner and just pulled the string off my new plants last night and I picked off atleast a handful of baby rhizomes and threw them away because I didn't know better😢

You're welcome my friend 🤙
Dude… more videos of big box store plants/care. I had no idea.

Thanks for watching 🤙
I cover nearly every plant from both PetSmart, Petco, Buce Plants
Please toss a store you'd like me to take a look at. I'm always looking for an excuse to buy more plants.
Thanks! I stumbled upon this video and pulled mine and sure enough I missed the string!
Glad I could help!
You're doing a great job. Thanks for your videos. Educational and entertaining.
I appreciate the encouragement. Feel free to binge watch the videos. There's 175 of them and I honestly thought I'd run out of ideas after 10. Lol
I learned about the strings from Joanne at The Small Scape 🤓🐠
I was wondering about that after watching some java fern care videos. You just saved my plants 🙏
🤙
I planted my plants with the strings attached ...... can i pull them up cut the string an replant them now? It been a few months now. There reproducing baby leaves like crazy too
You can absolutely remove the strings at this point. Those babies you can put on the tip of something and watch it grow a chain of ferns. 🤙
Cool thanks man
@@justinzduniak6499 No problem. Thanks for saying Hi 🤙
Dude I just bought a clearanced red Malaysian red plant and it’s doing exactly what you said with growing roots out of its leaves. Should I just cut the root out of the leaf and shove it down into my gravel?
Oh my goodness no wonder why I always lose them. I thought I was doing something wrong. All my other plants live but never this plant. Thanks!!!! They should def put it on the package!!!!
Thanks for watching 🤙
Glad I fell down the rabbit hole and discovered this video and your channel! Bought some Java swords a few weeks into my cycle and they were rapidly degrading. Rescued 6 rhizomes bunded with a half foot of black string, hoping for a rebound!!
I'm glad you ended up here too! I'll look forward to seeing you around future videos 🤙
Red three comments this guy seems legit I'm subscribed now
Thanks for following Joe 🤙
Have fun watching videos.
Oh wow i judtordered 25 java ferns windelov came in potted, i stick all of them in between small hole of rocks and woods, but never knew i have to take off the strings..now i have to take all of them out one by one and remove the string or they all going to die, thank you so much!
Why do you recommend trimming the roots?
These plants aren't aquatic plants yet. They were grown in tubs and when you convert them to underwater. They lose those roots and grow new ones that have adapted to underwater growth.
You're helping the process move along quicker.
Hope that helps 🤙
Oh! That's really interesting! Very useful information. Do you know if this applies to other plants that have grown out of water?
@@JamesDeGaris , correct. Their leaves will melt off as well. Nearly the entire plant makes a complete change.
The only original part will be their rhizome.
@@JamesDeGaris also not all plants can do this and some don't like the process at all and may completely die. So don't think that you did something wrong if that happens.
The process is extremely stressful for the plant.
:-0 WOW! Good to know. Never would have thought. Thank you!!!
I buy it already attached to driftwood. So far they’re doing well.
Yeah, over time they'll attach themselves. I bet they look great 🤙
Will my Java fern reproduce and take over the tank I have couple small Java fern?, love your videos.
A thriving plant can definitely take over a tank.
Thank you 🤙
Wow all three of mine had that string on them wow I'm so happy I clicked on this video wow God bless
Once java ferns get black holes and are dying, can they be saved? Or do I need to just cut those affected leaves off?
The leaves are going to die at that point. However, if you snip that leaf loose and let it float for a couple weeks. It'll produce little ferns directly off a loose dying leaf. It's pretty amazing. 🤙
@@yourtap thank you. I think I'll have to do that. Actually mine don't have black holes yet. They looked like they did but there more progressively translucent.
@@thanhvanvo03 my pleasure. Appreciate the conversation 🤙
Can I put it in large gravel substrate? Like marble sized stones
I don’t have the ability to glue them to something I’m hoping showing the root balls into larger gravel will work
If you don't have direct pressure on the roots and they are free to attach themselves; larger stones would be preferable unless you don't mind them connecting to piles of stones permanently.
It's more of a cosmetic decision on your part. Hope that helps 🤙
Holy crap i just planted mine yesterday with it all raveled. The container said to just plant it. I guess im doing an extra water change this week and fixing that up!
Happy you watched this so soon after planting. Thanks for saying Hi! 🤙
Only thing that kills java fern in my experience is covering the rhizome, other than that it will grow no matter what even with very poor lighting.
I was wondering If I needed to remove the string or not, thanks for clearing that up for me lol
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and following 🤙
Lol
Thank you!
You're welcome! 🤙
hi my man, i have tried tthese ferns many times. I m always failing, they ll just develop baby plants but never new leafs. What must i do
Keep the babies.
Hmm, I have a project for tomorrow’s maintenance day.
Thanks! I just took my new ferns out & saved them❤❤❤
I'm happy to read that. Thanks for watching 🤙
Just 24 hours later & most of the little plantlets look much better!
Me too. Fortunately they were only like that a few days. Good luck with yours.
Thank you. Gonna be honest, I thought the black strings were part of a root network? Need to go home and separate some java fern now
I believe we all thought they were roots. Thanks for watching 🤙
Wow. I checked my plants that I bought from Petsmart after watching this video. And, it's true that there's string around the ferns...
It would be nice if the containers for those plants had directions on them because I myself am guilty of taking those poor leaves out of the tube and jamming them into gravel. I cringe by typing that out. I know how to deal with Java ferns now but that’s a total beginner mistake made partially by the company who grows those plants.
We all did it. I completely agree. Their directions don't point out what counts the most. Thanks for watching 🤙
So sad I'm a beginner and just pulled the string off my new plants last night and I picked off atleast a handful of baby rhizomes and threw them away because I didn't know better😢
Don't be hard on yourself. I've killed many of plants and animals due to mistakes. They're lessons and we are capable of learning from them.
Thank you for sharing your story 🤙
Omg I was literally just looking at my ferns and wondering why it was growing so many babies on it!
That's a bunch of fun. Pluck your babies and spread them around. 😁
I never had issues with java ferns...they grew huge and propagated much!
To be fair, my plants were underwater when I bought them... Never had strings attached. Like you said, don't bury the rhizomes!
You just saved my Java ferns !!! Thank you !!!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. I'll see you around the internet 🤙
Well thanks man! "There was that string" i said. 8 plants geez.
You're welcome my friend 🤙
Whelp, that explains why my ferns keep dying. Great info!
Thanks for watching and I'll see you around future videos! Save those baby Ferns! It's explained on my latest video 🤙
Geez!! WTH this pisses me off I didn’t know they put string on it !!
Well now you do my friend 🤙
What type of glue?
Thanks for watching and thank you for subscribing! 🤙
You can use any type of super glue that's in the form of "Gel" the ingredient that makes it this way is called "Cyanoacrylate" it will be listed on the ingredients on the back of the package. As long as it is a gel with that rediculous name for a substance lol it's perfectly harmless to your inhabitants and plants.
I'll send you a link to a follow up tutorial on the propagation of Java Ferns 🤙

After you watch this video, you'll know everything you need to know about ferns.

I made it even easier on you. Here's a link to gel glue that I've personally used and you can find it anywhere. 🤙
Thanks for this , I had no idea!

Wow ! Thank you so much
You might have just saved a bunch of my plants, thank you
You're welcome!
OMG, THANK YOU! I had no idea. I’ll pull mine out and cut the string
Love your sense of humour!
I appreciate 🤙
Ok I did not know this and I’m going to go fix this problem when I get home from work tonight
🤙
Thank you SO MUCH!!!!
You're welcome my friend 🤙
Thanks a bunch. Just planted some Java fern for my turtle and had no idea i just placed 4 bushels together in one spot. They would have died on me and I probably wouldnt have tried plants again 😂
His tank has be looking real bare since I had to get rid of his rocks. Now with 4 plants Petey will be swimming like he was back in the wild!
I appreciate you watching 🤙
Live plants make every aquarium/pond so much better. I did terrariums of frogs before fish and shrimp now.
What kind of turtles do you have?
@@yourtap I have a 16 year old Red-Eared Slider.
I had a Fancy Bearded Dragon but he passed recently.
@@themightycrixus1131 that's a bummer to read, bearded dragons are fun pets. I raised one in my younger years. Used to breed Vipers as well. Those sliders may out live you bro. Lol
Those are all over Texas where I'm from. 16yrs?! They must be getting big man.
@@yourtap it was sad to loose him but I rescued him from severe neglect some years ago and was honored to get my time in with him. They really are great pets and I found him in the most unexpected way. I would try a snake but I don't know how my cats would feel. 😂
I am a huge animal lover and always rescuing and rehoming critters in need.
Petey was a carnival prize up in Pennsylvania and smaller than an oreo when we got him. Now he is the size of my hand! He has some miles under his belt too. Made it all the way to Charlotte, NC and even up to the Blue Ridge mountains for a few years. He has lived quite a life.
@@themightycrixus1131 thanks for sharing your stories! I really enjoy hearing about others journey with their animals. Good for you taking care of that Dragon.
Snakes do find ways of getting out. Your cat definitely would be on edge constantly 🤣
Wow thanks for the info, had planted them without even knowing
You're welcome 🤙
Thanks for the info I didn't know, am I suppose to do the same with Amazon sword sepreate and take off the string?
Always check your roots. If you find string on anything. Remove it 🤙
@@yourtap it turns out I got 12 Amazon swords not just 1😅.
im pretty mad right now. I just planted them nicely and now i gotta take em out to remove this damn string lol
But hey; could've been worse. If they had died in a month and then had found this video. Think about how pissed you'd be then. 🤣🤣
Wow thanks for this video, i knew that ball was not roots...... Im fixing to go do this right now.
Happy it helped 🤙
@@yourtap bro it did 💯, they were all tied up nasty but they all had roots so i did separate them, i do notice some roots growing in the ends of the leaf as well.
@@ICEMANTITO Those roots at the end of the leaf are the beginnings of new plants. You may notice little bumps on the top side of the leaf as well. Eventually it'll have a new baby fern to pluck off and attach to something else! 🤙
@@yourtap thanks once again, you're the best
How can a person mend a damaged family tree ? Because I'm rotten to the core LOL 🤪

Now we're going to make that 55 gallon a huge shrimp breeding tank.
