I saw Geoff live in the early 2000s at a Las Vegas show and he sounded really rough. Frequent voice breakups, inability to hit high notes, that sort of thing. Not surprising, I suppose, since he was foolish enough to smoke. The damage just hadn’t hit him yet in 1984.

The Japanese halls at that point had top notch equipment which made their sound mix so good, that's why a lot of live albums were recorded in Japan in the late 70's/early 80's.
Glad you did this one. It's been reacted to by many, but it's always nice to get the opinion of a professional or someone who is in training. The amazing thing about Geoff is he is a baritone. Being classically trained I imagine it opens many possibilities for a singer.
I think the look on your face said it all: astonishing vocal power. Geoff Tate has always been an incredible metal singer, and Queensryche has long been an excellent progressive metal band. I have read that Geoff underwent vocal training, actually here in Washington State. He clearly had a very fantastic vocal coach. People have said for this song, he went all the way up to a high E or E5, way up there. And even more, others have said his voice type is actually baritone. You won’t be disappointed by his best work with the band. I’d like to recommend “Silent Lucidity”, much more restrained but one of the most beautiful power ballads ever composed. And really, his vocal performances during the prime era of the group are all worth checking out.
You mean, same album as "Silent Lucidity". I almost went on a rant, because I thought you meant same as "Take Hold Of The Flame". I like your choice, (without researching what the video is like) but the album song has a boring rain part at the end. I would recommend "Promised Land" for range and versatility, or "Someone Else" if you need to stay in ballad land. But if you want more of the early day stuff, "Queen of the Reich" or "En Force". I know this will be ignored, because it doesn't follow the youtube formula. Too many people submit to that formula, which is why you can't break the mould.
In Metro Seattle Geoffrey Tate, Ann Wilson, the late Layne Staley, RIP, and the late Chris Cornell, RIP, were students of the late singing coach David Kyle, RIP. All of these lead singers had/have hit songs with their respective rock bands. DK and Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden are influences of GT. Great song 👍 Good analysis 👍 Suggested video 📹: Queensryche performs I Don't Believe in Love.
I recently saw an interview with Geoff where he said he had Eddie Jackson and Chris DeGarmo take lessons from his vocal coach before they went on tour.
Their concept album operation mind crime, is a worth a listen from start to end without a break. The album is a story and each song is like a chapter. The album in its original form is just one song leading right into the next with no sound breaks. On my first listen, you knew you were on a different song because the track number changed.
You're as beautiful as Geoff voice👏🔥. I'm so thankful to be able to see him in a couple of weeks for the first time🙏. His not in this range anymore, but still very very good 👏
I was fortunate enough to have seen this tour (The Warning Tour), and Geoff sing this very song 'back in the day'! It was standing room only at L'Amour Rock Club in Brooklyn, NY, and the atmosphere was so charged, I can still feel it decades later! My jaw is still on the ground somewhere in that vicinity...
Thanks for reviewing this Band, I have seen them about 4-5 times since the mid-1980s. I was blown away then and was amazed 2 weeks ago with Geoff and all new musicians. Nice to see your reactions to the Music I grew up with
This is BY FAR the best video & song for other singers to critique. It always shocks the person doing the review. And trust me, it's very real. I was there, back even before Geoff was in Queensryche. When he was in a band called Myth. We knew he would end up being this good. Because he was that good then......
There are so many reactions to this song out there now but one thing remains universal, the open mouthed amazement as Tate belts those high notes. Even the trained opera singers who do these reactions can't believe what they're hearing.
Ronnie James Dio need to be on your list. Maybe the greatest rock vocalist ever. He sang for Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his own band Dio. Anything live with him is brilliant but definitely start with one fron the 80s or 70s. "Heaven and Hell", "Rainbow in the Dark", "Dont Talk to Strangers", and "Stargazer" are all pure Dio
I can only add... not only is Geoff's voice awesome, BUT everyone seems to miss the fact that the lead guitarist, Chris DeGarmo, is singing the harmonies! He's keeping up with the singer's belts, note for note.... listen again!
You young lady are incredible in your own right and it warms my heart to see younger generations appreciating others from different genres and periods in time respecting masters in your field!!Great job!!
Every member of the band was on top of his game that night. That high E, followed by Scott Rockenfield riding the china, holy crap, it gets me every time. The drums in the live version are actually better than in the studio version.
Well done 😊. Geoff Tate lived on his own vocal planet. Pretty much untouchable. Queensryche was also very cerebral music. I'm sure you will get this recommendation a thousand times but Silent Lucidity shows the softer side of Geoff and Queensryche

Was hoping you'd do this one. I think I suggested it 2 or 3 times. Also notice all those interval leaps right on pitch. He does play up the high notes as difficult. But that's just his performance as those are easy for him w/ his relaxed voice. It's muscle memory for him. (That top note is an E5 if anyone wants to know). Thanks for reacting to this. This was the second song I ever heard from them. I was only 14 or 15 when this came out and was hooked from there. Their album Operation : Mindcrime is probably the greatest album ever recorded, in my opinion. You should give it a listen. It’s a complete story from beginning to end in an album. I know it’s not the first time it has been done but it is seriously one of the best ever. 🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻

Just what I was expecting when I suggested this song. Your reaction was tremendous 👏 👌 and your take on Geoff's voice was spot on. I recommend Eyes of a stranger it's another epic 😎
Great reaction! Such an amazing vocalist and underrated frontman, Queensrÿche as a whole I feel is just so underrated and don’t hear a lot of people talking about them or their impact. I would strongly recommend you check out the song “Queen Of The Reich” live also from this same concert. The energy and stage presence along with his high belts are so incredibly powerful! Other songs I’d recommend are “Walk in the Shadows”, “Breaking The Silence” and “I Dream In Infrared”
I've loved Geoff Tate for many years. It never gets old. And the facial reactions when people hear him. I love your appreciation in you eyes and smile as you listen to the singers I grew up listening to
Geoff has this cool super-clean yet sometimes "dirty" technique, not quite fry, just like a bit of grit in his tone, dude learned his own voice so well and he never strains, he gets right to the edge of strain of his own vocal chords but still belts out notes, and his breathing technique is perfect, rarely hear him breathe in unless he means it as an expression; you can hear his lungs full, keeps his shoulders back and his upper torso upright
I saw them back in the mid or late 90s at a local rock performance club. Awesome show. By pure luck, the local radio station was advertising the show with them doing a signing appearance at a local record shop (remember those?!? LOL). I was on my way to something else and right near that store so I dropped in and got band autographs on my concert ticket stub. The guy behind me was a local bar band singer and Geoff Tate pulled him aside, behind the signing table, and they started "talking shop" and he was giving a bunch of tips on how to extend his range and how to stay strong through a long set of songs without wrecking your voice. It was so cool to overhear that conversation. He was so nice to that guy.
He is widely considered one of the best singers of all time... His teacher was the "MAESTRO" in Seattle... Whom also taught Ann Wilson from Heart and has a who's who of rock vocal talent under his teaching. Jeff Pilson from Dokken took lessons, Chris Cornell from Sound Garden... Layne Stanly from Alice in Chains... I even know someone that took lessons from him personally. Others that have consulted the Maestro are Garth Brooks so style didn't really matter either.
Although this is a great performance, not just for the 80's but for all time. It's the performance that really turned me on to the Ryche. If you are looking for his best vocal performance you need to hear suite sister mary. It showcases his vocals and theatrical abilities.
I would love to see her react to the song Halloween (official live) by King Diamond. His vocal range is quite impressive, and it hasn’t changed in almost 40 years.
I love the first time someone hears Geoff sing this song. Since the,l first time I heard this when it was released (1984), I thought this was the best hardrock/metal vocal performance ever, and Geoff was the best hard rock/metal vocalist ever. You hit on the key difference between Geoff and every other singer. He hits all the notes, but he does it with volume and clarity. There is no raspiness in his tone. No one else can say that. The only guy I think is close is John Arch from Fates Warning. Songs such as Fata Morgana, The Apparition and Guardian show what he can do. He just doesn’t quite generate the volume that Geoff Tate does, but he is close.
It's an absolute riot. A genuine pleasure watching you make the same faces I made when I first heard this song over 30 years ago. Keep on the Queensryche bandwagon - there's a LOT more where this song came from! (Roads to Madness, Anybody Listening?)
I’ve been a musician all my life! I’m 53, I seen queensryche before the ep came out in Wisconsin! Unbelievable the talent this man has, the best metal rock singer ever!
I think there's not a person on the planet that doesn't enjoy this song when they hear it....especially this version. That's how we rolled in the 80's.
Great reaction video! With your talent and watching your facial expressions along with your comments and bubbly personality created a very fun experience.
Another amazing reaction lovely Aaliyah, Tate in the 80s mid 90s was absolutely unbeaten, if you want to hear something else from them with a totaly different vocal scheme may i suggest Silent Lucidity. You will love the song, i wish you and your family to be safe and healthy. love and kisses from Greece.
A lot of people claim Geoff had a 5 octave range but it was actually 4 octaves (F#1 - G#5) at least according to the internet. It’s not really about the vocal range but the vocal quality in your range. Rob Halford from Judas Priest had a 6 octave range. I’ve seen a couple of vocal coach reactors claim that the 2nd jump to the E5 is basically a textbook example of a male singer signing and sustaining that note. As others will note, the song Silent Lucidity is a great example of Geoff’s true baritone voice.
more like 3 1/2 octaves. a 24 fret guitar is 4 octaves,. neither of theses singers can sing from the low E open string to the high E on the 24 th fret. None.
Those of us old enough and fortunate enough to see these bands live back in these days understand their incredible talent. Watching your expressions of amazement, joy, interest and appreciation is like the joy of watching someone open a gift. Your videos are such a delight. Keep exploring. I am looking forward to seeing more!
I see you found them lol. Another of my all time favorites. The original line up was one of the best ever! Not only was Chris DeGarmo an incredible guitar player but him & Geoff’s harmonizations were some of the best I’ve ever heard🤘
I saw them 7 or 8 times a d Geoff Tate is the real deal, he did similar things when I saw them. Don't sleep on the band, as someone who got in on the ground floor with them, getting their initial EP and then LP as soon as they showed in the record store, the original band was just as good on their instruments as he was as a vocalist, check out the albums, Warning, Empire and Operation Mindcrime for ample evidence of just how good they were. Nice reactions so far, you have much to experience but are off to a nice start. Amother Queensryche classic you would love is the Lady Wore Black, Geoff is again in great form, they played it at the show you just reacted to. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

Thanks so much Mr. Paul for your recommendations😍
He gets up to an E5 on that opening.
🥰
You are beautiful and talented...seen this group a few times back in the day and he is crazy good.
Thank you so much!! Have a wonderful day Mr.Steve
So now that you have heard the best voice in the world, I wonder how you listen to more of their songs? Cuz they're absolutely amazing
I will definitely do😍
Great reaction!
Thanks for all of your recommendations😍
One of the best vocalists in his prime! no autotune
🥰
Possibly his best live performance
🥰
Non, toutes ses performances étaient bonnes, je l'ai vu plusieurs fois et la qualité était la même que cette vidéo.
@@MisterPoppy-sc1sjI see
We used to party with these guys back in the 80’s. They are from the city next to where i live. They are great
Oh so nice, thanks for sharing
I've loved Geoff Tate for many years. It never gets old. And the facial reactions when people hear him.
I love your appreciation in you eyes and smile as you listen to the singers I grew up listening to
Thanks so much for sharing
Geoff has this cool super-clean yet sometimes "dirty" technique, not quite fry, just like a bit of grit in his tone, dude learned his own voice so well and he never strains, he gets right to the edge of strain of his own vocal chords but still belts out notes, and his breathing technique is perfect, rarely hear him breathe in unless he means it as an expression; you can hear his lungs full, keeps his shoulders back and his upper torso upright
Thanks so much for sharing, he is so amazing😍
Wow thanks so much for sharing💕😍💕
He is widely considered one of the best singers of all time... His teacher was the "MAESTRO" in Seattle... Whom also taught Ann Wilson from Heart and has a who's who of rock vocal talent under his teaching. Jeff Pilson from Dokken took lessons, Chris Cornell from Sound Garden... Layne Stanly from Alice in Chains... I even know someone that took lessons from him personally. Others that have consulted the Maestro are Garth Brooks so style didn't really matter either.
Oh wow thanks so much for sharing💕
Hi Miss Aaliyah! Another great reaction! Happy Easter! 🐣🐰
Thanks so much Mr. Chris, Happy Easter too
He's a power house on vox he reminds me of Freddy mercy with his stage preset love this band good one
Thanks so much Mr. Randall💕
Although this is a great performance, not just for the 80's but for all time. It's the performance that really turned me on to the Ryche. If you are looking for his best vocal performance you need to hear suite sister mary. It showcases his vocals and theatrical abilities.
Thanks for sharing Mr. John
That drummer hit at least 150 newton meters hits to snare.
😍😍😍
OMG .. Yes..!!! I been begging you to do Queensryche back when you first did the Disturbed reactions videos.. HAPPY JOY JOY..
Thanks so much Mr. Seth for your wonderful recommendation, I really loved their performance😍😍😍may you always have a great day 🌺
Happy Holy Easter🙏😘🤗
Happy Easter to you too🙏
@@AaliyahCapili 💕🤗💕
@3:13….welcome to our world!! Now you know!! You can’t unhear that!!!! Great job I love seeing youth enjoying songs of my youth
😍😍😍
I would love to see her react to the song Halloween (official live) by King Diamond. His vocal range is quite impressive, and it hasn’t changed in almost 40 years.
Thanks for your recommendation💕
Elizabeth (of The Charismatic Voice) said "My mind is breaking..." when she reacted to this song.
😍😍😍
Thanks so much Mr. Craig for sharing🥰🥰🥰
It's an absolute riot. A genuine pleasure watching you make the same faces I made when I first heard this song over 30 years ago. Keep on the Queensryche bandwagon - there's a LOT more where this song came from! (Roads to Madness, Anybody Listening?)
Oh thanks so much for sharing🥰
I’ve been a musician all my life! I’m 53, I seen queensryche before the ep came out in Wisconsin! Unbelievable the talent this man has, the best metal rock singer ever!
Thanks for sharing
I think there's not a person on the planet that doesn't enjoy this song when they hear it....especially this version. That's how we rolled in the 80's.
Thanks Mr. David for sharing😍
Great reaction video! With your talent and watching your facial expressions along with your comments and bubbly personality created a very fun experience.
Thanks so much🥰🥰🥰
I'm loving this song and Tates voice for over 35 years. So good to see, that still in 2023 his music can inspire young people.
😍
I never get tired of watching the reactions of people when they hear that E5! :D
😍
Another amazing reaction lovely Aaliyah, Tate in the 80s mid 90s was absolutely unbeaten, if you want to hear something else from them with a totaly different vocal scheme may i suggest Silent Lucidity. You will love the song, i wish you and your family to be safe and healthy. love and kisses from Greece.
Thanks so much Mr. Nikos, greetings to you as well🌺
@@AaliyahCapili Well i know i am old as dirt but dont make it worse by saying Mr. Nikos is just fine 🥰
The best reaction to this iconic lineup and song that I've seen.
Thank you very much🥰
A lot of people claim Geoff had a 5 octave range but it was actually 4 octaves (F#1 - G#5) at least according to the internet.
Thanks so much for sharing
more like 3 1/2 octaves. a 24 fret guitar is 4 octaves,. neither of theses singers can sing from the low E open string to the high E on the 24 th fret. None.
What a great reaction, I knew it 😂👍
Thanks so much 💕
Those of us old enough and fortunate enough to see these bands live back in these days understand their incredible talent. Watching your expressions of amazement, joy, interest and appreciation is like the joy of watching someone open a gift. Your videos are such a delight. Keep exploring. I am looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks so much🥰
Saw Operation Mindcrime at Kemper Area Kansas City....is one of the top 3 shows I've seen hands down!!!!!!
Thanks so much for sharing
He was a baritone singer who could sing high the note he's been hitting easily is an E5
He is so amazing😍thanks for sharing Mr. William
@@AaliyahCapili you're very welcome
I see you found them lol. Another of my all time favorites. The original line up was one of the best ever! Not only was Chris DeGarmo an incredible guitar player but him & Geoff’s harmonizations were some of the best I’ve ever heard🤘
Thanks so much for sharing😍
Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
Thanks Mr. Vic for sharing and for your recommendation, much appreciated😍
@@AaliyahCapili It's a huge thrill to see young people enjoying the same music we have all our lives, good music is good music, no matter what genre or when it was made. From the Beatles to Black Sabbath and everyone in between, the last 60 years has been the best, try Pink Floyd's Time to see how far music can take you, that song is forever relevent. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Geoff Tate is my favorite vocalist of all time. Queensryche is my favorite band. My wife got me his autograph at the Disney Store here in Reno, NV. He signed one of our personal checks on the signature line.
Oh thanks so much for sharing😍😍😍
Queensryche created Progressive 🫰Metal, Freddie Mercury Perfected Opera Fusion

That performance was an Encore after over an hour of singing. That in itself is impressive. If you'd like to hear another side of his amazing voice, check out - Queensryche Unplugged - "I Will Remember" and the classic video for "Silent Lucidity". Brilliant. Thank you. I watch every reaction video of "Take Hold" and it really boosts my mood.
Geoff is like this secret we have but I love when newbies get blown away. He is the G.O.A.T. of my generation. Period.
Thanks for sharing Mr. Paul
Damm, what a great song. Haven't heard that one for years.
😍
I saw the operation mindcrime tour he really sounds that good live.
😍
I was fortunate to have seen them in the eighties, at their prime. I loved your reaction. Your vocals in the intro are amazing, Peace
Thank you very much Mr. Dave💕
