Then one day he walked into the rehearsal room and told the band "Listen guys, I don't want to play with you anymore". Then he went and became a commercial airline pilot.

Nightrider, the song with what I believe to be the most throat ripping metal scream ever. There is just no way to do a scream "right" and still have it come out like that. Notice that he stopped doing it like that very quickly. I suppose we wanted to make it to 30 and still have a voice. That whole 4 song album was kind of the beta version of what Queensryche would develop into. Those 4 songs are all great though. I compare it to Metallica's Kill 'em all. They both show their bands dripping with talent but hadn't quite got their signature sound and style yet.
As others have pointed out, it's very much worth remembering that this was the last song of the set. He'd been singling pretty hard stuff for the better part of an hour here.
I saw them in concert on their self titled debut album/EP in the early 80’s. Met them before the show and got their autographs at a local record store. They Rocked the house. You’ve got to listen to their first record, which only has four songs, but the best IMO.

Geoff has always been great live!! I’ve seen them live since 1983 and he’s never failed to hit the notes. Amazing breath control and support. Don’t forget to listen to Operation Mindcrime and Rage For Order.
Nothing happened to his voice. He’s a natural baritone that had a 4-5 octave range depending on which expert you listen to. He simply sang Empire closer to his natural tone. He sang most of Take Hold of the Flame in a high belt, not falsetto as some claim, even reaching as high as an E5. His vibrato, which often embodies good vocal technique, remains from his lower all the way through his high register. He’s 64 years old now and still performing. His voice has changed due to age. He signs primarily in his lower baritone vocal range now.
Welcome to my teens!! This video IS a live recording. BUT the visual is a compilation of multiple shoots. During and after the show. To get great shots. Geoff was a beast back then.
I saw them live twice. Once for Operation Mindcrime which was done in its entirety from the first song to the last, and once for Empire. They were amazing then.
In his prime, Geoff Tate had a 5 octave range, but he is actually a baritone!! He has recently regained most of that range, having recovered from open heart surgery and lost some weight. He is the best male rock vocalist this old lady has ever heard.
That's what's so impressive. Geoff could go from as high as this song, and so deep in other songs. And the insane thing is, a lot of times, in the same song. In my opinion, one of the greatest voices of all times.
About his voice. Geoff Tate was a baritone that could find himself easily in the 5th octave (take hold of the flame is in that range with the high notes being E5). So he had an insane range.
I first discovered Queensryche in 1983 when I was 18 and working at a Indie Record store/Head shop. We got a Promo copy of their EP and the owner let me keep most of the Promo's. So when I got home I put it on the turntable and was blown away. I have seen them many times the best was in 2005 at First Avenue in Minneapolis. They played 8 songs from various albums then played the whole "Operation Mindcrime" album. When I was about to leave their sound engineer called me over and said "I can tell your a die hard fan" and he handed me a laminated set list the only set list that he had. (Most all set lists are now on a computer with only one physical copy they use).
Growing up with them in Seattle was an amazing time for music we had so many good bands , Geoff Tate’s voice in his prime was 2nd to none , I think Layne from Alice In Chains might be right up there , just 2 different styles Geoff was more polished and had opera training, but both were so powerful and unique in their own way, one of the things I loved about Queensryche was they had so many different sounding songs , some that had to grow on you some ballads and like with silent lucidity with an orchestra, but I’ve seen them 3 times and they always Rocked , not a big fan of the new stuff without Tate
3 E5's in one song - AND at the end of a gig. This was one of the encores, I believe. I suspect many of the auto-tune idiots will be asking 'What's an E5'? And FYI - Empire (the album) was released 6 years later.
Having seen Queensryche when they first arrived on the music scene in the mid 80's, I was completely floored and consequently smitten from that moment forward. This video honestly doesn't do true justice to the sheer magnitude and magnificence of their sound and artistry. Simply put, they were well before their time. Lastly, I just saw Geoff in IL last year. He sang all songs from Rage For Order and Empire and did remarkably well for someone who is 60+ years old. Now please check out Tony Harnell (TNT), Roy Khan (Kamelot), Michael Eriksen (Circus Maximus), each of whom were influenced by Geoff Tate. :)
Nothing happened to him, he just holds back on some songs...Geoff Tate's voice is just magic, if you listened to the studio version of this song this live performance is spot on. Personally I and many others think this is way better then the studio..really recommend the studio of "Road To Madness"...enjoyed your reaction
I think he was only 24 here. At his peak. Empire was much later. Plus they were a diverse band with many different songs, so you dont have to scream or reach E5 always. His fans know his rage. Plus this was live. Queensryche thrived at lives. I do prefer lives always than the studio versions and here you can see why, all the soul and the passion.
Funny, I used to go see Queensryche just to watch Scott Rockenfield beat the dog shit out of the drums, but after a 15 year span, I gotta say, the thing that impressed me the most was Tate's voice. It didn't age a fucking day. The last concert I saw, the vocals could have been substituted for the first. Ridiculous! Not by favorite genre, but top to bottom ( DeGarmo is criminally underated, as are a fuck load of guitarists from hair metal era), really solid band...
Don't listen to the critics because they will all say Geoff Tate's voice is shot but the reality is the critics could not sing as good as Geoff can sing today...and any song you pick on that particular recording kicks as, and all the way up to the Operation Mindcrime CD kicks ass.. but please do more #QUEENSRYCHE..
No, nothing happened to his voice. Listen to them on MTV Unplugged, and many of there different lyrics. This song was an encore, the 22nd song of a live performance and still hitting every note perfectly. Geoff was in a league of his own
Nothing happened to his voice from “Flame” to “Empire”, it was just a different approach to music. As someone who’s seen them live several times, he really was that good live.
Come on! Something happen to his voice between the albums. Mainly towards the end Smoking, drinking and not staying in shape. All have and had some effect to his voice. Mainly his breath control and his ability to hit those high notes and sustain those long notes. Yes because of this he had to take a different approach to his singing and music. It a known fact if you don't keep your diaphragm muscles and stomach muscles in good shape you lose a lot of the control and ability to Belt. Also if you don't take care of the cords you lose them..smoking and drinking some of the worse things you can expose those cords too. Even in his last tour doing the whole Rage for Order Album. He has improved and can hit some of the notes but holding them. Na! That's gone. Maybe if he loss some weight got in shape and quit drinking all that wine. He could return up at the Top of the Best Metal Singers of all time. Along with Bruce Dickinson,Rob Halford and Micheal Kiske. All who can still sign like they did way back when.
Can you believe they're from Seattle a lot of grunge bands like them they've been rocking for over 40 years they're older stuff was way heavier should check out the video for queen of the Reich you two Rock
did something happen to his voice? Is this for real. Tates versatility as a singer can deliver many voices. Tate is actually a baritone whose range soars depending on the song, really not so difficult to understand
HOW does one unleash such power and clarity slowly in such a slow long drawn out ascension Jesus H Christ! I mean it is one thing to just be able to get there, it is quite another to be able to get there, with power , with clarity and with such pin-point control and precision bro ! Come on man ! I always feel like WTF, this got to be some kinda gag , for real !
What is crazy though is if you ever listen to a man like Pavarotti sing, you will instantly hear how THIN Geoff's voice is in comparison. People are probably like LOL when I say that but it is true. Pavarotti's voice, even much lower it has soooo much power and richness. You should do a video on Pavarotti's voice comparing it to some of history's best Rock and Roll singers. You do not need to understand the lyrics when he sings son don't worry about it Don't even worry about pickin a song, just pick a song , I am certain if you know anything about music , you've got to be blown right away Shit even if you don't know a damn thing about music.
Don’t know if you’ve listened to Queensryche Walk in the Shadows . It pretty good too ! I grew up in 80s with many bands and Queensryche was one of them. There was always a rumor that Geoff has Opera training that’s why he has such a powerful voice and breath control.
yes explore geoff tate he is the singer no longer with queensryche but has a band in his 60s now still rocking but in his prime he has made many good songs with queensryche one of my favs
Have you guys listened to “queen of the reich” that one was from 1981 and it’s a little more upbeat than this one, gets your blood flowing. And yes, later in his career he wasn’t able to hit those high high notes anymore because of damage to his vocal chords but still a great singer
There’s so many nuggets to be discovered within the realm of what most would deem “Hair Bands/Metal”. You kids need to seek out more from the “Power Metal” subgenre…Priest, Dio, Maiden, Savatage, Helloween and such!🤘 Obviously, the ‘ryche struck a chord!👍😎

His vibrato, which often embodies good vocal technique, remains from his lower all the way through his high register.
He’s 64 years old now and still performing. His voice has changed due to age. He signs primarily in his lower baritone vocal range now.
I got the Album and this concert as a VHS - VERSION at home - i' m 54 years old
glad I grew up in the greatest era Rock n Roll
Welcome to my teens!! This video IS a live recording. BUT the visual is a compilation of multiple shoots. During and after the show. To get great shots. Geoff was a beast back then.
I've seen them live quite a few times and they never let me down.
May I suggest anything by them unplugged. The unplugged sessions are excellent.
I saw them in 1993. They ripped the roof off the place. Possibly the tightest band I ever saw.
Dale Dunlap. I saw them live on the "Promised Land" tour, must have been '95, and again it was awesome.
I worked at arecord store when it came out, opened it up and put iton the turntable and been a fan eversince.
Exactly
It just blows my mind seeing people who never heard of the band
3 E5's in one song - AND at the end of a gig. This was one of the encores, I believe. I suspect many of the auto-tune idiots will be asking 'What's an E5'? And FYI - Empire (the album) was released 6 years later.
he got older, he can still sing.
Road to Madness or unplugged on MTV I will remember
Nothing happened to him, he just holds back on some songs...Geoff Tate's voice is just magic, if you listened to the studio version of this song this live performance is spot on. Personally I and many others think this is way better then the studio..really recommend the studio of "Road To Madness"...enjoyed your reaction
Roads To Madness is an EPIC song!
În fiecare noapte la volan ascult această melodie și pe străzi primesc o mulțime de priviri care apreciază muzica 😎🤘🏻🔥
He’s sweaty because this was the last song of the concert 🙌
I just saw Geoff out here in Vegas about 2 months ago hes in his mid 60s and sounds the same shit even better
No auto tune there kids
You guys should also check out...helloween for amazing vocals...or Judas priest 2 ....
Jet City Woman is a great one to check out
Can you believe they're from Seattle a lot of grunge bands like them they've been rocking for over 40 years they're older stuff was way heavier should check out the video for queen of the Reich you two Rock
Rockenfield is a fuck8ng monster drummer!!!
did something happen to his voice? Is this for real. Tates versatility as a singer can deliver many voices. Tate is actually a baritone whose range soars depending on the song, really not so difficult to understand
HOW does one unleash such power and clarity slowly in such a slow long drawn out ascension
Jesus H Christ!
You do not need to understand the lyrics when he sings son don't worry about it
Don't even worry about pickin a song, just pick a song , I am certain if you know anything about music , you've got to be blown right away
Shit even if you don't know a damn thing about music.
Saw him live he is amazing no strain
This was the last song in a 2 hour concert….what a voice.
this is an encore after a 2 hr show
This band put out some fantastic music. They have a new album coming soon. Unfortunately Geoff is no longer with the band
Don’t know if you’ve listened to Queensryche Walk in the Shadows . It pretty good too !
I grew up in 80s with many bands and Queensryche was one of them. There was always a rumor that Geoff has Opera training that’s why he has such a powerful voice and breath control.
waaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of their time
Saw them open for Iron Maiden at Radio City Music hall just a few months after this performance.
You would love their “ Jet City Woman”….
yes explore geoff tate he is the singer no longer with queensryche but has a band in his 60s now still rocking but in his prime he has made many good songs with queensryche one of my favs
Have you guys listened to “queen of the reich” that one was from 1981 and it’s a little more upbeat than this one, gets your blood flowing. And yes, later in his career he wasn’t able to hit those high high notes anymore because of damage to his vocal chords but still a great singer
It's actually from 1983
DAMN SHE GETS IT
There’s so many nuggets to be discovered within the realm of what most would deem “Hair Bands/Metal”.
You kids need to seek out more from the “Power Metal” subgenre…Priest, Dio, Maiden, Savatage, Helloween and such!🤘
Obviously, the ‘ryche struck a chord!👍😎
Love how's she in love withouknowing it. :) 😀
Enjoy ❤
More like 10 out of ten
You must listen to Franco Fagioli - singing "Vo solcando un mar crudele", his style is incredible.
