- DISCLAIMER-This video was uploaded at the request of a very generous listener who needed a couple of tips. It is not intended for beginners. If you see the word, "Instructional" on my page, it means I have uploaded another video of the song. I share some tips on the "Instructional" videos.
If you get anything out of it, great. If not, no worries. Have a nice day.
I also get a lot of requests for tabs, but I don't use them. I learned by putting the needle on the records. Nothing develops your ear quite like that!
Cheers
Very classic chord progression in 70's era, undoubtedly the best era for pop music.
Appreciate the instruction.
Excellent tutorial of an excellent song! …..I came back to this tutorial again today, and the faces you make really portray just how much you dig this tune! What’s not to dig?! Its a fantastic tune that I have been reminded of after all of these years. Thx again for sharing your talent with us “mere mortals”
Nice guitar arrangement. Thanks for the tutorial. (FWIW, I liked that you just showed and told us what you're playing and didn't try to over-explain.)
Dude if you sat back and put this together organized this could be the best lesson out there.
but, he deosn't know how to do that. He is a egocentric musician. It happens to most of them
I learned this from you a couple of years ago and came back today to get a tune up on it (was a little sketchy on the chorus). This is one of the best tutorials I've seen on UA-cam and I want to thank you for making it - I live in Philly and Rundgren is a hometown so whenever I play it, it goes over well.
This is a good arrangement and good video but for me, it would've been less confusing just to reference the chords relative to the capo.
Excellent. Thanks
Love this version! So much better for a 12 string. Had a little trouble getting a couple of the cords but I love the way you teach.
Such a great song ..and such a great lesson!! I'm going to go start playing now...
Thanks dude. As for all the negative comments I just read, yer lucky he posted it at all and if you work at it and listen closely you can pick it up using your ear. That will make you a better player anyway. Damn why does everyone feel so entitled and immediately start tearing into someone. Are you paying for these tips?
Hear hear 👍 it’s not that hard anyway ..a bit of effort etc
Always thought of this as a piano song until I came across your great acoustic guitar version of it. With many stops and starts I have finally got it down, and it is a true pleasure to play and sing it. Thank you for taking the time to put this out there, and know that your work has brought a lot of enjoyment to a lot of people out here.
one of the best lessons I've had. But you have to stick with it. At first I was very confused but after spending hours I realized the problems were all mine. Thanks Scott, 9 years later.
Thank you for the no bs, to the point, illustration. Nice vocals too.. I thank you very much. I like the jazz chords and I'm working on a new songlist. This will be very helpful... Love this song....
That's awesome my friend. Love that song.
i learned this song from you, forgot it, and now im back learning again. thanks a bunch friend!
You are tremendously generous, Scott. And talented, as well!
Scott, awesome job in arranging this song for us acoustic guitar players. You made it very understandable to play. Love the chords! Thank you very much!
..Nice work Scott Raines.. thanks for your time & for doing this.. I appreciate it.. wonderful & one of my all-time favs.. Peace Bro!
Great voice man, I love that leathery touch you finish your lines with... Very organic and genuine.
Great job buddy , amazing talent Todd is .
Hey there buddy.... This guy is not only really talented, but he is taking the time to explain what he is doing b/c someone was curious how to acheive what he is doing. I really like watching this guys video's, I stumbled across the a while ago. I wish I had half his talent and a fraction of his singing voice.
fantastic. thanks you for taking the time to do this. a great acoustic version. scott
Thanks Scott efforts greatly appreciated 👍😉
thanks scott - needed this tune down in a hurry and you saved me alot of time!
Scott, you nailed it. Those chords are so clean and beautiful with that acoustical sound. Thank you for teaching it this way. After hearing it several times, now I open the video to fill the screen, and I move the cursor at the bottom to under the white light next to your guitar case in the bottom right corner (where you actually play the complete song at the end). Have always loved this song since hearing it for the first time, back in late 1969, by Nazz.
Very nice strumming and nice vocals, would like to hear you sing it all the way through just to hear this beautiful song, thanks.
David Dunbar Thank you. It’s on my channel.
Nice! I have always loved this song and I had a feeling it had a lot of 7ths in it -- the chords just sound very rich. Original thoughts confirmed.
Thanks so much for this...great lesson on one of the best ballads ever...please do some more Todd if you get the chance...I love it that you know and learned like all us old school guys did...put the needle to the record...
thanks .. i wanted to learn this for a long time ... nicely done and taught .. much apprecieated ...
Right on, Raines. I needed an excuse to go get a capo. I love this song. Good job, man.
What a talent - great lesson - agree you just reference the chords relative to the capo
thank you for this! loved it
Awesome Scott! Really beautiful rendition.
I just returned from seeing Todd in a little 200 seat venue in SoCal. Incredible. He played a tiny stage, almost no room to move. But he played like it was an audience of 100,000. A true star.
And thanks for contributing your awesome talents to the UA-cam/Musician community. You definitely give us an edge.
Incredible.
Awesome. Thank you so much! I'm going to do with with my band this summer, and needed a little help with the chords.
I rush home from work last few days to work on this, its starting to sound good
Thanks Scott.
Dude, that's awesome!
Hello Scott =:-D Thank you for this instructional video. You have a beautiful voice too!
Thanks for good instructions, and more than that, your voice and guitar sound are great. I will try this song and hope to reach your level.
Scott, Thanks alot for taking the time out of your busy sceudule to teach me this song. Your version of this song is great! I've been working on this song for two days now and I've just about got it down. In another month maybe I'll be ready for open mike night at the Iron Barley. Best Regards, David
Hey Scott, thanks for the lesson. It's a great cover, but adding an instructional companion video makes you the MAN in my book. Greatly appreciated!
Great version! Good job!!!!
This is a half-step flat. If you want to play it in the same key as the original, capo 3 it. Plus, there's this half-step modulation three-fourths of the way through the song that makes it real hard to play on the guitar unless you move your capo up one fret midstream. But overall, a pretty good approximation of the chords. Thanks for posting.
Awesome man! U have a great voice.
GREAT!
You made my day Scott
Hey Scott...I had to re-visit your instructional video to re learn this tune..lol...but this time Im playing it on a koa k24 that just bought....it comes out awesome!!! thanks man
-Scott
Sweet duder! Nice lesson.
Found this lesson very helpfull! It's a nice version, hope you can make a lesson for can we still be friends in a future. Greats from Argentina man! Great lesson!:D
Hi Kev
This inversion of Amaj7: 6th string(index) A; 5th string muted; 4th string (ring finger) G#; 3rd string (pinky) C#; 2nd string (middle) E.
Hope that helps!
Nice voice!
you are the best!!!!
Awesome. Glad I could help!
Your AWESOME
AWESOME!!!!
Brilliant thankyou!!!!
thanks man, excellent
I also found it confusing and hard to follow, but not impossible. Thank you for posting this.
Love it Scott- You have a wonderful voice and capture the mood excellently, even while instructing. Would help much if you included the chord names through out the song here in the "show more" uploader section. Thank you!!! Brings back some sweet memories. Thanks!
I agree with prior comments. Just call out the chords relative to capo. You have a potentially great lesson but this makes it work
Nice!
fantastic. thank you,
good voice hard song to sing
It’s up there for sure!
Very nice indeed.
Sorry Glen. I don't do instructional videos for the public. This was a favor for a generous listener. Definitely not for beginners. Cheers
You sing nice too
Awesome job
thank you
thats really good.
this is 10% knowing how to play it and 90% YOU!!!! you just have the gift!!!! you are great!!!!!!! I got a question--why are you so darn good?????
you are too cool, real casual class lol
Now in my bunker adding this to my repertoire during COVID and crazy election. Thanks 10 years later.
Giving the "actual" chords is what "musicians" do...You can play with or without a capo (unless you wanna learn it in 2 different keys?). Good Job!
Always loved this song because of those chord structures. I was singing along when you played it through at the end. But you left out the key change! Lol
Thanks man,,,
Sounds great but can you describe it relative to the capo for dummies like me.
thanks scott! you know, i'm finding that this version is more comfortable for me (frets relative to capo): 3x5432 (with thumb doing wrapping to get the low g). sounds a little more "full" to me. cool chors progression and great song! thanks again for the help.
Excellent tutorial. I just noticed that as i was strumming to your rhythm pattern, my guitar was sounding exactly like yours! I zoomed in and voila, a Larrivee, same model too, LV-05, way to cool! Just wanted to clarify one chord that you say is a Dm7, when in fact I think you mean a C#m7 (fingered as a Bm7 from the capo. As for your fingering of the Amaj7, do you finger it like an Emaj7? Keep on rocking the songs that are so melodic!!
Brilliant wish I could have a lesson with you👍😔
Hey Scott, many thanks you are awesome, very very close by the original !!!
Great lesson sir, can you please do more lessons of the covers you posted? Thanks
Nice Larrivee
Thanks for watching everyone! Just finished up project with new artist, Laura Michaels (Words Of Wisdom). Check it out on iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, etc. Videos coming soon!
I could probably figure it out but, could you put in the key change for the 3rd verse.
GREAT JOB SCOTT! I WAS REALLY ENTERTAINED YOU HAVE A GOOD VOICE AND PLAY THE GUITAR VERY WELL DONT LISTEN TO THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS FROM THE VARIOUS A HOLES!!!
Hi Its me again. I would like to take an opportunity here to request you here for how you play " I can't tell you why by Eagles" as none play in a way as it should be in acoustic guitar. You can skip the lead guitar part. This is my special request here as I find you as an perfectionist with your elegant playing style in acoustic guitar. Quite a few people here play it but I don't feel saying this is what I have been looking for. Anyway it is a heldback play rhythm. But I hope yours will be different from others.
I am having troubles with the two really cool chords...can you break those down for me?
Just subscribed btw
Im going to ask again politely could you please make one relitive to the capo? Every time I want to learn this it get upset and turn you off.
i really liked your rendition of this tune! thanks for putting together the instructional video. having trouble figuring out the chord you are playing when you're saying Amaj7. the notes in Gmaj7 should be A C# E G# but it looks and sounds (I think) like you're playing A C# E F# which is really an A6. is that what you are playing there?
where is the key change section??
I need some help figuring out these positions. how can I contact you ?
Sounds great, but why confuse things by not referencing the chords relative to the capo? It makes my brain hurt.
At 2:17 he says Dm7 and he's playing a Dbm7 He's dropped down a 1/2 step from the recording...if you try to follow along with the original tune. Also the song modulates into a key change a 1/2 step up or sharp. WTF? That would be tough to gig with. I get that there are many levels of players, but he states this is not for novice players. I wish all song tutorial were this clear and paced. Kudos!
You have a wonderful singing voice. The chords sound good; try an A major 7 and a conventional barre chord (index across entire neck & just the ring fin. on A str. ) for the first 2 chords on the second verse. Thanks for posting.
Sounds pretty close to me Scott, of course I am bass player.
the way how you play and sing, I suppose, sounds much better than the original singer. I like the sound as I listen to it seriously. Every youtube players here, have different chords of their own choice
Thx for the post, almost got the song down. Any chance you could show chord diagrams?
That's actually C#minor 7 (@2:19) at the 4th fret- not D Minor 7.
Yes!
you (teacher-SR) know what you're doing.many of us don't.you could be a much better teacher if you call out finger positions on fret board...can't see where yours are
That A11 sounds incorrect, as does the next chord, maybe it's the voicing
