Actually written by Todd and recorded by his band The Nazz in 1968. He re-recorded it in 1972 and the newer version was the hit. The original is slow but has excellent harmony vocals...worth checking out.
👍 Love his voice unfiltered. I've noticed in recent years, Todd's voice has changed and he's naturally taken on a beautiful deep raspy tone to his voice which i also love. I think I was only about 10 or 11 when his music came out so not really old enough to appreciate how talented he was. I remember all of his songs well and have been back pedaling this past year learning his history and abilities. His newer music is still really good.
There's something about this song. It's stuck with me since it came out a zillion years ago. Such a simple song, and yet it connects. Shows the soul of someone who thinks deeply about love. Or maybe it was just the 60s/70s mentality.

I would have liked it better if it hadnt been so "slick". And that stupid Wolfman was the announcer. I dont know what your age is, but they were considered kind of a joke back then. It surprises me that Todd appeared on it.
My biggest all-time musical hero! At 17, when I snuck into his "Back to the Bars" tour show, knowing only "Hello It's Me", I was so blown away, I bought tickets from a scalper and went right back in to catch the late show. I saw Todd twice in one night, my very first time. On the double album Something/Anything, the first three sides feature Todd performing everything. The fourth side, which includes "Hello It's Me, was recorded "live" in studio, so studio musicians are featured on every track on every instrument, except whatever Todd played on the particular track. The seminal New York city punkers whose debut album he produced was the "New York DOLLS" of course.
“Scalper” I love it. The teenagers and young adults today will never know the amazing lives we were blessed to live through and experience. The best days of my life were my teenage years and singing in my room for hours n hours to tons of songs. Music that I loved. My sisters were heavy metal fans which was ok at times but not too too HEAVY. I love all music but the deeper the love the more selective I get. My bf once asked me how is it that every darn song that comes on the radio or that i download you seem to know all the lyrics to every one of them? I just smiled and said I grew up in the 70’s Tom and every time a new favorite single was released there I ran out the door and down to the record store on the Avenue purchasing it and then hurried my behind back home to get up to my room where I would play it over n over n over again until I memorized every word. I found out early in my youth that singing was my happy place and it was when I was the most happiest. Even today singing is still my happy happiest place. I love singing Todd’s songs too. He really is an amazing artist. Melts my heart listing to him.
@@lillianm.dougherty7647 Very cool, thanks for sharing. I recently awoke from a dream where I was singing "I Think You Know" (from "Todd") to a long lost love. Revisiting that album, following on from AWATS, has really boosted it in my estimation of importance within his discography.
I was ten, enjoying the original Coca Cola recipe and time out in the country. I could always sing Todd Rundgren and loved it from the start. Great video, Fil!
Todd’s been nominated for the Rock Hall of Fame. It’s about time! Let’s hope the committee has the good sense to induct him. Fil, you mentioned Laura Nyro. If you haven’t done so already, an analysis of her would be welcomed. Her album Eli and the Thirteenth Confession inspired many singer/songwriters.
Rock Hall membership is based on a vote from members of the music industry. Todd despises everyone in his profession (including his own paying fans, believe it or not!!), so he'll have to bribe an enormous amount of money to enter that group. He's even slammed the Rock Hall specifically, stating that he could care less about them, and would refuse to accept membership! Yeah, good luck with that :)
Bill Woo, The Sex Pistols snubbed the “award/induction,” and I don’t think they’re the only ones who did. Maynard Keenan claims to despise his fans for revering him. Idk if Tool’s been nominated. Non rock groups/singers have been inducted- (Tupac, ffs?, and NWA?). I’m pretty sure Joan Baez was a folk singer. I don’t measure an artist’s work by that institution.
I have always thought that there needs to be a special category for people like Todd Rundgren and Nile Rodgers who have had such a tremendous influence and impact in both the performer and non-performer categories.
Hey Fil - I haven't been here for a little bit but came back when I saw Badfinger. Who I really loved and their story is just so sad. I have a 45" of Baby Blue in my ridiculously large vinyl collection. Now you have done this Todd Rundgren clip - another song I love, as is 'Can We Still be Friends" and provided so much of just how musically and intellectually gifted, I suspect I may become a patreon. I have a question regarding another couple of artists/bands I want to ask so will check in again shortly - really love your channel - and your 70s series is fascinating - great musical era.
I saw an interview where Todd says he uses as many maj7 chords as possible...proof here!....as well as producing some of the most influential albums around!
Todd is definitely a wonderful anomaly, and has a secure place in my personal Rock and Roll HOF! His music is part of my daily life! There is only one Todd Rundgren, and he has accomplished so much, and shows no signs of stopping! The people who are his true fans understand every bit of the enormity of his talents, not to mention that he’ s an all-around good guy! Long may he rock.
Fil, it's about time. Todd's genius has been a part of my listening library since before this song appeared in '73. I've seen him play 5 times, most often in Utopia. This may very well be one of my least favorite TR songs. Some of my Todd moments...I've seen Todd dance on a grand piano while playing sax with a guitar slung across his back, I saw him dive from the top of a chrome pyramid while playing the Singring guitar solo, we threw dozens of joints on the stage which were gathered up by the roadies and the lads would take turns going off stage and come back smokin'. I can finally fill in some knowledge for you. Side 4 of Something/Anything is almost all performed by various artists as a band including Rick Derringer, Moogy Klingman, the Sales brothers, the Brecker brothers and Gene Dinwiddie. Also, listen real close to that 'Bat Out of Hell' album, you'll soon realize that Meatloaf's backing musicians are none other than Utopia.
I love Todd Rodgren. He was the soul of my generation, everyone I new had his music. He made you smile or cry 😢. He was beautiful and his voice so relaxed he talked to you. He was a big part to the hippies, which I was. A genuine nice person.
Utopia played on the album too, perhaps overshadowed by the E Street Band. And I can pick out Todd's backing vocals on a few of the songs. What a talent.
@@REBsessions Todd was sleeping rough and penniless when he had the chance to play session guitar on the Meat Loaf album. They were running out of recording time when the producer decided they needed a Harley Davidson to add a dimension. They couldn't find a Harley d in time so - in one take - Todd payed the riff. Meat Loaf was gracious enough to cut Todd into the royalties on the album.....so he finally got his financial reward for a career of innovation.
@@mikegoldstone6832 Todd was the producer on the Meat Loaf album when RCA and Meat Loaf had a disagreement and RCA pulled out. Todd then finished the production on his dime. He eventually sold his rights to the royalties to buy his house in Kauai.
This man's music was really kind of the soundtrack of my youth, first record I bought when I was a kid was Todd Rundgren _Initiation._ Bought _Something/Anything_ years later, I'm pretty sure 3 sides of that double album are Todd by himself, and the side with "Hello It's Me" is a live studio thing, you can hear them all goofing around between some of the tracks, I'd always assumed it was the case because of that anyway. One of the most fun shows I ever went to was Utopia and the Tubes for the "POV/Love Bomb" tour, at this huge nightclub called Stage West, we got right up front, we were leaning on the stage. The bar is so far away, they let you buy six packs, we were piling our cans on the stage, and the musicians were kicking them over, we shook all their hands, totally awesome night. Saw Todd solo and with Utopia a bunch of times in the 70s and 80s, always put on a great show, Todd's more fun to see in a smaller venue, when there's a bit more chance for audience interaction, he's a genuinely funny guy.
Todd could have stood on his musical talent alone, but his artistic creativity came forth visually also in this video. It takes courage, and I for one, am glad he had it! Long live freedom of artistic creativity!
I remember loving this song as a kid in mom's car on the way to a store or the beach! Thanks for choosing this song, and artist,Fil! He also wrote a big hit that England Dan and John Ford Coley capatilized on,called""Love Is The Answer!" Thanks for some good vocal anaysis,Fil! Sincerely,BobbyK
Well done. You are a fan for sure. Thanks for taking the time to focus on Todd. I saw him perform twice. Will never forget. In San Francisco, my wife kept yelling "Eastern Intrigue" and it did it, just a few feet away like he was in our living room. I also saw the "Glass Guitar" in San Jose, CA. Laser beams coming out of the head a giant Spinx. Utopia. Love his guitar work. Thanks Wings.
I was 12 when this song was released. I became a fan then, still a fan now. I finally saw Todd live for the first time earlier this year, to say he is an amazing performer is an understatement.
This is one of my favorite musicians most ppl overlook. Not only was and is a prolific song writer he is a music prodigy on production. I use to sing and play this song...he was was avant- garde of his time...we use to sit around get so high and listen to his dbl album. Todd. Thank u Fil...this takes me back. I saw him only once and I just sat in the third row and was taken on a trip...I love his transpose from one key to the next...makes such a difference in the song. I stole it a lot.
My young niece is a super fan of Todd and has pictures of herself with him. Todd is a fascinating artist with a cult following. Saw him with Utopia. My high school girlfriend and I had a breakup song, Can We Still Be Friends. Straight Up is a great Badfinger album. I’ll have to look up that Beatle bugs band you mentioned (I saw Todd with Ringo’s All Star Band). Joe Walsh came out onstage playing a huge bass drum on I Don’t Want to Work, I Just Wanna Bang on the Drum All Day. He’s not odd, he’s Todd.
That's just great. I think the music from before the 1990's are the best eras. Todd is brilliant, both as an artist, as well as an expressionist. I've been listening to him ever since this song was first released. It makes me very happy to see young people appreciate the music of their parents and grandparents. There's so much incredible material out there for them to discover.
I can remember hitch-hiking to his concerts in Western New York when I was in college. I think I saw 4 concerts and they were just so full of energy and so much fun that it kept me and the rest of my friends coming back for more.
What a great synopsis of Todd's remarkable career ... that's no easy task! He's been a favorite since my teenage years. He's a musical shape-shifter with a truly expansive catalog. Like someone else said, the term genius is often used too liberally but in the case of Todd, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Thanks for another truly enjoyable analysis. Hats off to you sir!
Great analysis and rundown on Todd Rundgren! this is one of my favorite songs of his. Todd is another artist You could do a week of analysis on so versatile. Side note, Tony and Hunt sales are related to the late Soupy Sales, He is best known as the guy who got pie's thrown in his face in the 1950's and 60's
Fil - it's always a musical subject (person or band) that I never was a real fan of back in the day, but you always send me into a rabbit hole to where I learn so much more about them. Thanks, Man.
I'm pleasantly surprised you analyzed Todd. I've been a todd head since the beginning and had the pleasure of seeing him many times live. It's hard to describe his influence on music and the technology of music. My personal favorite album is Hermit of Mink Hollow although there's so much music on every album that is extraordinary. It wasn't a few days ago i was listening and watching a video for God Said, just a revelation even now. Thanks for giving such a great history lesson and Todd the acknowledgment he deserves as a true musical genius.
Great video! Thanks for this. I saw Todd last night on the incredible "It Was 50 Years Ago Today" tour, with Denny Laine, Christopher Cross, Jason Scherr (former lead singer of Chicago), and Joey Molland. Was trying to figure out how that particular group all assembled, so your tip about Todd producing Badfinger clued me into that connection. Btw, anyone who is near a venue for this tour, make sure to see it. There's something for everyone. You won't be disappointed!
Something/Anything was a double album. The first three sides were done all by Todd. The fourth side was recorded as a live take with a band and backing vocals. Hello It’s Me was a live track on the fourth side.
Excellent analysis Fil on Todd Rundgren! What a musical pioneer this man is! Gifted in so many different levels musically its astonishing! A true genius! His guitar Work on Bat out of hell would have to be some of the greatest playing I’ve ever heard! Cheers Mario! 😀🤘👌
My sister and I used to listen this playing our mom & dads old 45s we would sing and dance like little fools today those times as this song are amongst my most beloved memories
Todd was a brilliant songwriter and performer. He went out of his way in this performance to show it wasn't lip synced. Such a brilliant artist. A profoundly innovative musical force and a brilliant producer. Todd had an outsize influence on pop music and the direction it took. And he's still giving it to this day. They need another hall of fame when you consider that neither Todd Rundgren nor Johnny Rivers (for crying out loud) are in the current one. (Please excuse the shout out to Johnny but it burns my ass every time I think about him not being in the Hall of Fame. How ridiculous. But back to Todd. The word :"genius" gets overused but it certainly applies to Todd. ...from an enduring fan.
What an interesting assessment of Todd Rundgren. I really enjoyed all the historical background that Fil shared with us. I enjoy watching Fils face during the video, as much as I like to watch the video! Keep up the great critiques you’re doing!
Excellent analysis of Todd Rundgren, full of interesting bits of information. My best friend in high school and I used to listen to Todd a whole lot. Our expert analysis was, “Oh, Todd,” followed by deep sighs. In fact, we still say this to each other whenever Todd is mentioned or played. Great music, good times!
Todd Rundgren is nominated for the 2021 R&R Hall Of Fame for the 3rd year in a row. Let's FINALLY get him in! Search "Rock Hall Fan Vote" and vote with several emails.
THE best version of this song... Ever! His delivery and facial expressions really project what the song is all about. Btw, great vid. Thank you for playing the entire song before commenting. And, some Todd history for folks who don't know him.
I loved watching you watch this as I had done live on Midnight Special the hippest (absurdly so) venue of it's day I crushed so hard on the RUNT toddboy when I was twenty and I was in heaven as i bought the awaited something/anything double lp the morning it arrived at the student union store in my first quarter of college. A few hours later I got tear gassed in a campus anti war riot with Todd's epic soundrack in my head. Good Times....good times...
Todd Rundgren is the single live best performer I've ever seen. Although it was 1975, I still remember him walking along the front of the stage singing and shaking hands with everyone--in fact, I can still remember the feel of his hand. He and the stripped-down Utopia must have played for 2 1/2 hours.
I just love this song. I was an infant when it came out, but the story resonated with me even as a very young child “catching it” on the radio, later. ❤️
Wow I was so excited to see you cover Todd Rundgren. I just watch this video two nights ago. Hello it's me is one of my all-time favourites. Thank you 🌹
Lot of people don't know what a great guitarist Todd was too. I saw him live in the mid 80's and he did a long dual guitar solo with Pat Thrall (another great guitarist who also played in the Pat Travers band).
I saw him on Don Kershners rock concert, probably the same time of this video. He came out, and sat at a grand piano with a reel to reel, sitting on the piano, and put his arm around it and said, this is my friend. All the back up music was on it. It was just him on stage, and a good show. Thanks Fil. Rock!
Wow... Awesome Fil.😁 Todd has always been super, super cool. Soooooo original. I learned a lot about him that I had no idea. The ''patreonette" (sp) thing... well!Waaaaay ahead of the times. I love his song writing. My personal favorite is "Couldn't I Just Tell You" Thanks!!!❤

I would have liked it better if it hadnt been so "slick". And that stupid Wolfman was the announcer. I dont know what your age is, but they were considered kind of a joke back then. It surprises me that Todd appeared on it.
@ziblot123 really? I was born in 1961 and everyone I knew LOVED The Midnight Special. How old are you?
Todd IS a genius!!!
I am totally jealous that you saw the Back To The Bars Tour!
It's an insult that it took so long!
I think todd will get in the re hall of fame.
Bill Woo,
The Sex Pistols snubbed the “award/induction,” and I don’t think they’re the only ones who did.
Great analysis and kind respect for Todd!
This performance and look were very touching to me at the time.
Agreed. He came off as very vulnerable during this performance. Made the song mean so much more.
I'm a big fan
of maj. 7th chords myself.
I've written/composed a song
made up entirely
of maj. 7th chords.
This was a really great review! Thanks for posting
My goodness you doing this. Nearly broke my heart hearing this again. Leaving my girlfriend to go to university. Wow, nostalgia city!
Brilliant Video As All The Video WINGS Makes - Thank You For Your Vast Knowledge And Willingness To Share.
Love love love love this version!!!! I wish more people sang for real like this!!! ❤❤❤❤
LOVE this Fil. Thank you! Saw Todd in Dallas Texas in 1977. Good times. (Very anti-disco crowd too.)
Nice!
Completely agree with you, Bear, that this song is one of my least favorites.
I've seen Utopia many times. Fave band! Todd is god!
Something Anything is Masterpiece
I love the way you are really into the song and the way your looking at Todd perform this beautiful ballad.
I was 5 in 73...this song reminds me of Northeast Philadelphia, as a child...as well as alot of 70s pop, Mc Cartney, Elton especially.
Love this song so much! Thanks Fil
I love Todd Rodgren. He was the soul of my generation, everyone I new had his music. He made you smile or cry 😢. He was beautiful and his voice so relaxed he talked to you. He was a big part to the hippies, which I was. A genuine nice person.
Todd is beautiful in this video. His image adds even more to the song.
Todd produced n played guitar on Meatloaf’s Bat out of Hell album! 👍🏽
Thanks to him for the motorcycle noises! 😁
@@mikegoldstone6832 Todd Rundgren was the producer?
I am upset that no one makes up their eyes with peacock feathers anymore. Can we go back for a while, maybe? 😢❤️ Thank You, Dear Fil!
owl.
RDE Lutherie
I hadn’t thought of that, which is another reason to go back to the seventies and try this again. XD
e m
What kind of owl?
I thought they were pheasant feathers. Maybe they’re a mix of feathers.
It was different that’s for sure
Thank you for a thorough and insightful look at the genius of Todd Rundgren. ❤
@ Digital Brand - Would that have been the 2015 tour ? I saw the tour in the fall 2015, just couldn’t remember if Joe Walsh was included in that.
I can remember hitch-hiking to his concerts in Western New York when I was in college. I think I saw 4 concerts and they were just so full of energy and so much fun that it kept me and the rest of my friends coming back for more.
I always luved this song..Just beautiful..Never got tired of it..
Love this song!!! One of my favorite of all time!!!
They are Soupy’s sons.
Absolutely fantastic!!!
Saw him here in Toronto in 1975, and again two years ago, still as amazing now as then, what a performer!! Thanks for this Fil!
Another interesting song by Todd is Bang on the Drum All Day. He played all the instruments in the recording studio.
Great song!
Haha that song is my phone alarm I use to wake up to in the morning, lol. I USED to like the song...
I love that song! Now I'm going to search for it…
Love that song!!
Wow, your knowledge of the history behind him is incredible!
Much love to you, brother! ✌️🎤🎶
This is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard
I didn’t realize you had already reviewed a Todd song! So glad you are familiar with him and his work! Thanks, Fil! 💕
Todd is very talented. I loved this song. I didn’t know all the things he does he’s absolute beyond talented. Thank you Fil😊
Thank you, Fil, and God bless you, brother. Todd Rundgren is a very special artist - one of my all-time favorites.
The 70's was a great decade for music.
It truly was!
Glad you’re a fan. Todd is a huge influence on lots of people and helped make Apple what it is today.
Shocked that he’s not in RRHF. How is that possible? 🤦♀️ Thanks for the video.
"Can We Still Be Friends." Classic.
My favorite!
10 yrs old
Fell in love with this song and 1st puppy love.
At first, I thought he was wearing wings of Pegasus
I thought he would break out a rendition of "I'll Fly Away" 😂
So glad you got to Todd!
He's an angel from heaven. A great man and icon.
I love that you listened to the entire song before commenting....
I been sick for a few weeks but I'm starting to catch up on videos. Excellent analysis, as always!
Love Toddy. Forever.❤️
Now you're cookin' with gas! I love Todd Rundgren! Also loved your analysis on Todd, Filip, i never knew anything about him...
I would love to have seen that!
Also the song Utopia Theme being performed in Central Park. That first Utopia album is my favorite Rundgren offering.
A heavenly song - close your eyes to go on this journey. Always makes me cry
I saw him on Don Kershners rock concert, probably the same time of this video. He came out, and sat at a grand piano with a reel to reel, sitting on the piano, and put his arm around it and said, this is my friend. All the back up music was on it. It was just him on stage, and a good show. Thanks Fil. Rock!
Even better live. Wow.
Wow... Awesome Fil.😁 Todd has always been super, super cool. Soooooo original. I learned a lot about him that I had no idea. The ''patreonette" (sp) thing... well!Waaaaay ahead of the times. I love his song writing. My personal favorite is "Couldn't I Just Tell You"
Thanks!!!❤
