Thanks! I used Max as well, but not as much as Maya. One area of Blender I’d love to see streamlined is the curve implementation. It’s good, but needs a few more steps than other apps and could be easier. That’s mainly why I went with polys in this video. I’m glad it helps!
I came a cross your tutorials as a long time max user learning blender and have found them the best i have come across. Many others out there but found many give you a little taste then ask for money to complete the course which was annoying, Or they were trying to sell textures or Addons (Im looking at you Andrew from Blender Guru). So thanks very much as these are short, concise and easy to follow.
Thanks! Those guys are great and their products are good, but I get where you’re coming from. I’ve never liked it when a tutorial takes you far enough than charges for the last bit. I’m cool with people showing how to do something for free, but having a paid way to do it really quickly. That’s win-win. The “little taste” stuff irks me as well lol. I won’t do that on this channel.
Nice method to make bottles. Thanks for your video. BTW it’s not necessary to use an add-on for the reference image. Just drag and drop your image from the file browser into Blender’s 3D view or use menu Add->Image->Reference.
Indeed, so much better than the old way. Come on blender binge, if you're using 2.8 get with the program ;) It displays and is shown as an empty in collections. There is also Object data with it's own picture icon, where you can change and edit settings. i.imgur.com/vFsoSuh.jpg
I think it's a good idea that he's using the older features from 2.7 cause some people don't want to upgrade yet, but it might be good to mention the new features as well
Both ways of importing / viewing images are there in 2.8 or 2.7 as always multiple ways of doing things, it's all good. I honestly can't think of a reason for non-production, learners (ie the demographic for this video) to not start using 2.8 right now. It's like having access to a stocked fridge full of delights, but instead go outside and gather acorns to grind up and make a bitter but edible paste for dinner.
LOL. I chose to show image planes as that's what I've used for a while. I wasn't comfortable explaining the empty object solution just yet. I thought it might make things too confusing...
Thank you for the nice tutorial video, I am a lapsed 3D artist that is getting back into it and am learning Blender 2.8 since my old copy of Maya isn't cutting it anymore.
You’re welcome. I’m a LONG time Maya user and I really love Blender now, especially 2.8. Maya is great and used everywhere but it feels clunky now for some reason.
@@KevBinge Watching your technique... I was kind of wondering if maybe you did. I built a hella-ton of objects using similar techniques in LW3D back in the day, including the old rail clone, mesh from curve guides, and patching meshes using curves as boundaries. I have to work on figuring those out in Blender now.
This is a great tutorial and really really helpful and useful for me. I'm just getting in to learning to model with Blender (and using the beta version, feels easier to use than previous versions) and I felt there must be some way to create mesh by rotating a profile, and this is it. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Great tutorial. Thank you for a being very clear with instructions. I'm used to working with 3dsMax and videos like these really help the transition. Love that you aren't using all the hot keys, as while useful to know, it's harder to follow.
Thanks! Hotkeys appease the fanboys and UA-cam experts. If you’re coming from Max, you’ll learn what you need and use what you want when you need it. I appreciate the kind words! I used Max for a while, but a decade solid in Maya.
one thing is really funny to me is that every single person that works 3d modeling talk to the vertices. they call them little fella, friend, squeeze guy, etc. haha xD
You can drag and drop any image into Blender ( into empty space, and I recommend any orthographic view ), even without "Impot image as plane" addon. And this SCREW Modifier, should be called SPIN Modifier in my opinion.
You’re correct. I chose Import Images as Planes because it’s what I’m used to doing, but dragging and dropping is easier, I’ll admit. I’ll be using that in videos from now on. I also agree that “Spin” would be a much better name for that modifier. Thanks!
Muy buen tutorial amigo, desde Venezuela te observo y te sigo y felicito, veo paso a paso tus videos, por favor tu podrías hacer un tiburón blanco? con sus dientes y sus lengua con sus textura y pintado. gracias...
One of the features I loved about Blender 2.79 (perhaps starting back to 2.76 or so) was the ability to apply an image to a shape, and essentially have your texture on the object right there. Say if I made a shallow hemispheric shape, like the top of the Millennium Falcon, and then, in Ortho view/Edit mode I could go key "U", and then "Project from View", and then in a second viewport set to Image Edit I could move the projected shape over an imported image of the top of the Falcon. The texture would then (after some sliding and adjusting of the Projected view in Image View) appear on the Object if I had the shading mode set to Textured. I've tried this with 2.8, and so far, it does not seem to work. Hopefully this is a feature that will be implemented soon. :)
You can still do that but it’s a little trickier. If you go into the UV Editing Workspace from the top menu, you can choose an imported image from the little image drop down and it will show. At the time of this writing, it doesn’t appear to show on the right side of that screen “edit view” unless you hook up the image to the shader. If it’s plugged in to the shader, it works as you’ve described, but not by default... yet... lol. Is that what you’re asking? Thanks!
@@KevBinge Unfortunately, I could not get it to work. But, I still have Blender 2.79 to accomplish this. 2.8 still looks like it has a ton of stuff to change the game for CG modelmaking, so I'll be learning it. :)

Curves might have taken way longer to explain. I'd have to go into a few things that I can explain easier with polygons in this instance. Both would work though, of course.
