Last year I uploaded a video on how to turn on USB Debugging with a broken/black screen. I was able to help a lot of people with that video, but unfortunately, no solution will work for everybody. In this week's video I am making a part 2 showing you a different method to turn on USB Debugging with a broken/black screen. I am not guaranteeing that this will work for everyone, but I hope that this method will be able to help more people.

HI Olivia! Thanks for all ur help :) I bought the the OTG to USB adapter you recommended in your video last year and connected my black screen Samsung A500F phone to my mac. Nothing. Where do I see my phone screen on my Mac?
@Lamia Ben - I don't know if I completely understand your question. Are you saying that you used the OTG cable and a USB to USB cable to plug your phone into your computer or are you saying that when you plug your phone into your computer you don't see the phone and its folders show up? Or are you saying something completely different?
You can't use an OTG cable to view your phone screen on your computer. To my knowledge, the only way to output your phone screen is to either mirror it, or connect it to an HDMI out (via a hub, like in this video), and connect the HDMI cord to an external monitor (whether that be a TV or a computer monitor that supports HDMI).

@Antonio Stepp - Hi Antontio, I'm sorry to hear that. Do you have your TV set to the correct HDMI input? For example, if you plugged the HDMI cable into the HDMI 2 port, but you have your TV source set to the HDMI 1 port, then you won't be able to see your phone screen. Double check to see if you selected the right HDMI port to display.
@@OliviaHenry yes, everything is setup correctly. I checked with a different phone. I guess there is an issue with the charging port. It will charge but won't connect to anything else. I even tried cleaning it with cotton on a toothpick. So I don't think there is anything else I can do at this point.
My phone is set up for charging. So whenever I connect it with pc, I need to change for file transfer for the phone even to show up in computer.

Thank you doesn't come close to the gratitude I feel. I needed to send my broken phone back to the insurance company today to avoid a ~$900 charge. I desperately needed one video on the old phone for an upcoming, very important custody court case. I was up all night trying to use every piece of software that anyone suggested. Nothing worked till I tried your "TV" trick. After squeezing and holding the phone with little glimpses of hope teasing me on the TV in between power on/off cycles...it FINALLY (3:32am) worked long enough to enable USB debugging and recover all my data. Can't thank you enough, seriously.

So I have a LG Zone 4 with a completely cracked screen. No touch. No screen visibility. OTG works but the phone is not MHL compatible so I am not able to see it on another screen.
Do you have any advice to give me to help me enable the USB debugging mode or allow the MTP for file transfer to my computer so I can save my photos? I know I can blindly click and hope for the best but it is very hard without knowing what I am clicking. I have a single Micro USB to USB-A adapter but not a multiple port adapter which means I am able to connect only the mouse to the phone but not the mouse and the computer. BTW I really liked your vids and even though I only have the one issue and hope to not need it again soon I subbed and liked

even if we have otg support some phones like mine is onplus 5 have the feature to turn off otg after 10 min of standby what to do in that case????????
Although well intended, some of the advice in this video is quite incomplete and overlooks a number of technical considerations. One of them being the one you brought up. Another being the fact that your smartphone needs to be MHL- compliant because otherwise it cannot provide an HDMI-compatible signal to an external display. Alas, I cannot offer you a work-around other than to replace the broken screen of your phone.
Hello Olivia. My Huawei p9 plus screen was damaged . I am trying to 'see' (to turn on USB Debugging to have access thru laptop) the screen through the method you described however, its not working. I'm not getting the screen to show up on Smart TV Screen. Any suggestions?

Hi, I have a Huawei Mate 20 lite and somehow it doesn't mirror the screen onto my tv, although I look up if it was otg compatible and it is.

Does hdmi need usb debugging enable....you already have usb debugging enable on your device....does it work without usb debugging .and this method work with device to laptop. I have mi note 4.
USB Debugging has nothing to do with whether or not you can output your phone’s display via HDMI; that has to do with MHL compatibility. If your phone isn’t MHL compatible then it won’t work. And no, you can’t do this method using a laptop. You need a device with an HDMI in (to input the video from your phone’s output), and laptops only have an HDMI out. So you’d be connecting 2 HDMI outs together, which won’t work.
From what I have found online, the Mi Note 4 is not MHL compatible, therefore this method won’t work for you.

Hey Olivia, great vid(s), thanks! Slight shortcut made it easier for me.. "ok google open settings" avoided the hard step of getting to settings and About Phone. Also, once I got to tap build 7 times, screenshots are disabled on the 7th tap. Because in my case I guessed it was prompting me for passcode verification. Once I got that right I could then screenshot to see confirmation dev options were enabled.
Bullshit.Waste of time. The USB debugging was already turned on. you can't screencast or screen mirror without first enabling usb debugging
USB Debugging has nothing to do with being able to mirror your screen via HDMI. In order to mirror your screen via HDMI your phone has to be MHL compatible. The Samsung Galaxy S8 I used at 10:05 does not have USB Debugging turned on and it still showed up on my TV screen. So learn your facts before you start berating people who are trying to help you.

I connected everything but the TV shows my samsung s10e phone's clock, date and a padlock icon. Background all grey.
I can't view the 9 circles at all! Can't unlock the blackscreen phone like yours. How?
I tried on another working fine phone. It also shows the padlock and grey background without the 9 circles. But this working phone I could see the 9 circles on the phone screen itself thus I can unlock with the mouse. But I can't see the 9 circles on my spoilt blackscreen phone or on the TV!

Hi Olivia! Let me just start off by saying you rock thank you so much for putting all this together! I have a Huawei honor 8 Phone so I am looking to use this method. However most of the Adapters on Amazon that support MHL are saying that you need to download an app to make it work. The problem is you can’t download an app until you get access to the screen via the TV. So can you share more about what the exact specifications are we should be looking for when we’re selecting the adapter since most of the ones you linked are no longer available?
I did and bought the adapter but my phone won't connect to the tv and i have it on the right source and the adapter is plugged in the charger what's the problem could anyone help?

Hey Olivia, sup. I got a Moto G6 play with a broken screen, touch not responding, and start pin activated, that means I can’t start the phone without touching the screen. D’you know another way to solve it? Maybe a way to enable usb debug from pc, or from the recovery mode. I can see some things in the screen for a few moments, but touch is doomed :( thanks for the videos. Cheers from Chile.

@@hadichamas3931 hi! I actually fix it. You can also try with a usb keyboard to enter your pin or pass.(use enter or arrows to navigate). After entering the pass using a keyboard, I was able to use the mouse.

@@hadichamas3931 I've used an adaptor ubs to micro usb(my phone was a samsung s7 edge with micro usb port). After that, your phone should automatically detect your keyboard, BUT if it doesn't, you can try to restart your phone and after that it should be visible.
P.S: I restarted my phone: first with the adaptor and keyboard connected in second without these stuffs, just the phone. Try both and see which is working..

Olivia you are the absolute bomb!! I broke my samsung 8 phone last week and all of my photos did not transfer to my new phone as I had assumed. I spent MANY hours researching how to get my photos off my broken Samsung and becoming increasingly frustrated. att and samsung would not help me and all the cell phone repair places wanted $250 to replace my screen. Then there are other UA-cam videos that are so freaking complicated and leads you to sites that again wants your money. Then I came across YOUR videos. You explain everything SO CLEARLY and show exactly what is needed! I only spent $25 on the adapter and got all my photos!!!! As soon as I connected the phone everything popped up and i could get all my apps and photos. I did not have to click anything else.. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! You saved me many tears and $$.you are doing such great service to the community.

Olivia i have a question . The first time I hooked up all my cables I was able to see my phone on the screen and unlock it with my mouse. Now when I plug everything in, it brings me to Samsung Dex and I would need a keyboard to type in my password. I don't have a keyboard. How do I get back to just seeing my phone on the TV?

@@mylanthony Unfortunately it didn't work for the S7. Something must be really broken in it for the usb video to not work. It did fall on the corner from a 6' height to a concrete floor and is really busted up so this should not be a surprise. But when you plug it into a PC via USB it is recognized but since we can't see the screen I can't turn on access to the files to see them on the PC.
I was able to get the video or the mouse/keyboard to work on my old S5 but could not get both of them to work together so we know the hub is at least partially working. Not sure why you can't access video and mouse simultaneously but maybe the S5 has limitations.
If anyone has additional suggestions on how to get into the broken S7 to download files off of it that would be great. It is my daughters phone and she would love to be able to get her pics and other files without spending a ton of money. She's a poor, frugal, and very grateful college student.

It worked for my Samsung S21 but not for my Huawei phone which is the broken one and it is definitely turned on as the HDMI is recieving the channel but still black on the TV screen. Olivia Henry I went ahead and bought the “dongle”. I have a Samsung Galaxy A20 I’m trying to restore. The screen won’t come on at all, so I’m hoping I can use this technique to change the settings and see if it’s even functional before I buy a new screen for it.
Hello Olivia, love your video, one of the best tutorials. I tried your method with my wife's phone, Galaxy S7,but it is not MHL compatible. Do you have a recommendation for that? Her phone screen is broke and the computer doesn't recognize when connected. She is really upset that her photos are locked up.
Hi Olivia, this is the one I needed, as my smartphone will not register on my PC until I allow USB file transfer mode. Getting the screen visible so that I could do that, was the whole thing for me. Olivia, thank you so much for the answer on the comment section related to #1 Video on this subject and I've followed your advice by buying the USB-C Hub by UGreen, and finally could cast my screen into my TV!
Now that you've finally showed me up the light at the end of the tunnel, thing is... soon as the screen appears on TV, it only shows up the Android's lockscreen Time e.g.: "16:07" jumping around the black screen - and even if I'm clicking the mouse anywhere I can't find a way to just enter my PIN Code.
Have you ever face this small issue?
I've got a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra with Android 12 if I'm not mistaken, barely new and never has been connected to any PC. I don't have a cabled keyboard, not sure if I need one... Perhaps the space bar would unlock it... 🤯🤡

I've solved by pressing the power button several times untill it Emergency Called showed up, went to settings and was finally able to see PIN screen. Tyvm!

Moto z4 did not work ;( It did not just pop up on the screen. I dont know what to do.
From what I have found online the Moto Z4 is not MHL compatible, meaning it is not capable of outputting its display via HDMI. So unfortunately, this method will not work for your phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy 20S and this method won't work quite the same as described. I did, however, find a way. I hooked up only the phone and HDMI cord to the adapter and the screen came up! Then, I attached the mouse to navigate the phone. Do not attach the charging cord because the screen will go blank! Thank you for your helpful video because it definitely was the start for me. Anyone out there with the same phone, this is how you do it.

I dont have connect & cant seem to find it anywhere. Maybe if I order that dongle adapter, I can get my phone onto my tv & access it from there. I actually have TWO phones exact same models exact same black scvreen of death . Both have a years worth of pics & vids & music that I want to save.
If your phone is both OTG & MHL compatible, then yes, buying the adapter should work for you. OTG compatibility makes it so the mouse will work, and MHL compatibility makes it so your phone can output its display to the TV. Your phone needs both of those capabilities for this tutorial to work.

Only works if ur device has a app such a s samsung dex, some phones such as tcl or tlc, aka chinese phones dont come with such a app that shoots ur phone directly from ur phone to the tv. So good luck to ppl with lesser brands that aren't samsungs or apple

hi olibia i recently busted my phone and screen and touch is complete done.
i found your video recently and watched and bought a usb c hub with 3 usb ports hdmi output.
i connected usb c to phone first and hooked up my mouse to the hub usb and hooked up the hdmi 1 with source showing hdmi1 and its not showing on tv. i dont know what else to do so i also tried vysor and that did not work as well. i dont know what else to do now : (

ive been able to turn on usb debugging on my s8, but when i plug my phone in it wants one last prompt, and i cant click on it. i have an adapter but the mouse on the adapter controls my computer and not my phone to click the last button

Heya Olivia, Ive been trying to work out how to get my S9+ working after I completely broke the screen and all screen functions. Also had removed the screen from the device with the intention to replace it. I then came across your videos YAY! I worked out from your videos that I could actually use my new computer monitor which has USB C connection and also USB for a mouse and even the audio connector (all after plugging all the pieces of the phone back together loosely hahaha). Another option if people have a good PC monitor. Thankyou for all your great videos!
But adding vysor after changing all the phone debugging options still does not allow it to connect as when vysor connects it asks to press ok on the phone but the phone is not able to be controlled except when its connected by the same cable to the second monitor... so I have either the ability to see the phone using the screen mirroring through cable or disconnect and plug into PC and vysor is asking top press OK on the phone which I can no longer do...
The Samsung galaxy S7 is outside the scope of the two videos on viewing your Android phone from your TV. The dongle(s) mentioned wouldn't work for Samsung Galaxy S7 specifically. Do you have any other suggestions or success with this model by Samsung?

Hi Olivia, USB debugging Enable before you connected it in any device like LAPTOP, SMART TV etc. Without USB debugging Enable you can't connect it in any device......
USB Debugging has nothing to do with whether or not your phone can output its display to a monitor; that requires MHL compatibility.
USB Debugging also has nothing to do with connecting to a computer. If your phone doesn’t show up on My Computer when you plug it into your laptop, then your phone isn’t on file transfer mode. I showed how to use Vysor to change your phone to file transfer (or MTP) mode at 14:24.
So first, your phone has to be MHL compatible to connect it to a TV or external monitor, then use the monitor to navigate through your phone settings and turn on USB Debugging (because USB Debugging is needed for Vysor to work), download Vysor on your computer, connect your phone to your computer and use Vysor to change your phone to file transfer (or MTP) mode (watch from 14:24 for changing to file transfer mode).
USB Debugging is only a requirement for this video because of the Vysor program; it is not used for anything else in this video.

This hasn't worked. I checked that my Samsung Galaxy A40 supports OTG & MHL. I have purchased the USB C hub listed in the link and connected it to my Galaxy A40 but nothing. As a check I have connected the hub to my laptop USB C port and it works fine. I know that the phone is working because it receives calls (albeit I cannot answer them because of the broken screen) and accepts a charge. I have used the fingerprint reader to ensure that the phone is 'awake'. Still nothing. Any suggestions welcome.
