Day in the Life of a Japanese Elementary School w/ Only 8 Students

- A day in life of a Japanese Elementary School with only 8 students and 11 teachers. This is a typical day for a Japanese family with 3 kids all in Japanese grade school. We start from early in the morning when they wake up and follow them through their elementary school morning routine, their daily school studies, school lunch meal, after school activities and finally coming home and having dinner with their family. The kids attend Kojin Shogakko, a typical Japanese public school but the main difference is that there are only 8 students at the school between grades 1-6. There are many interesting facets about the Japanes students daily life at school including their Japanese school lunchtime “Kyushoku” which isn’t just a break to fill stomachs, but it’s considered a form of food education. By consuming nutritious meals, students learn about healthy eating habits which helps carry over into their home life. What’s even better, is that cost on average 224 yen about $1.50 per meal, which means that even students coming from families with a tight budget are guaranteed at least 1 healthy meal each and every day. I hope you enjoy the typical day of these Japanese students.

Can we get a day in the life of Paolo fromTOKYO?
How's the wife and wolfy doing?..

Mad respect to that principal/soccer coach. Really seems like a solid guy
Japan as well as other countries need more people like the school staff or the faculty they're very good at their jobs and they care about children.
very solid, but it'll improve with exercise !
Always so encouraging to the kids, wants the teachers to be happy... He definitely seems like he's doing his best and is a good guy.
Principal creating core memories for these kids mad respect

By far, this is the untypical but coolest a day of a life video. I hope this video would boost the number of the students in this school.
❤

all this problems because USA keep doing and funding wars for the sake of "democracy", and with them comes the dollar which in turn higher inflations for any offshoring companies along with imports/exports.
That's why countries are now starting to abandon the dollar because USA is so dumb that "just printing money and stopping china" is the only solution, not improving their own economy.
I hope so too❤
That's not how this works, schools aren't "businesses" that just need advertising - there's only 8 students because THERE ARE NO OTHER CHILDREN IN THE AREA. A UA-cam video isn't suddenly going to boost birth rates.
@@lightskitty I'm sorry of what your grandmother has gone through and I guess it depends on the parents of how many kids they want or what makes them happy and stable and every family is different.
As sad as it is to see the effects of depopulation in rural Japan, I can't help but think about the amount of love, patience and attention these students are afforded by their teachers. I think they're going to have phenomenal bases to move on in their educational careers because of the time they were afforded with their instructors.
I wish I grew up in an area like this.
Yep, these kids will have an amazing primary education specially catered to them.
I was thinking the same thing
Why is the principal the best part of this episode? He’s so caring and sweet. I hope he gets his wish for more students. He really cares so much about creating great students and well rounded people
😊😊
Although it's kinda sad to see the realities of depopulation in rural Japan, having only 8 students do have its own upsides. I'm sure those children are going to have long-lasting memories from their school days
if birth rates do not rise , japan will cece to exist
The kids have multiple computers with huge screens in class. They're far luckier than african and southeast asian kids who have one dirty blackboard for a class of 50
@@itsgonnabeanaurfromme you know what they meant lol
Interesting
Many rural areas in the world suffer the same fate
I loved the confused look the dog kept giving Paolo from the couch at the end when he was finishing up. 🤨
Friggin' RIGHT? And at the end, the way he just STARED.
Like he was thinking "Who. Is this human. In my house."
I was hoping someone else caught that 🤣🤣🤣
The catat the end was like who dis hooman ?
Came in the comment section because of this hahaha. Maybe he's thinking why the guest keep talking with himself and not eating with the family.
1:44 how about when it straight up pees on the wall?
The principal seems so funny and kind ! Infact all the teachers look friendly. These kids are very lucky to learn from them!
I loved the focus on being physical throughout the day and not just at recess the kids had purpose for being active and different sorts of physical activities so they didn't get bored. I also really appreciated the principal and his willingness to be right along side the kids doing what they were doing for chores great mentorship. The priority of cleanliness was refreshing.
Also the school is very well equipped even this small school has everything required and was modern
Couldn't agree more, well said :)
8 kids in a school!!!! One-on-one with most of them, what a dream!! The teachers were energetic and very encouraging for all the students. The boys were hamming it up for the camera but still took their studies seriously. Maybe you should move to the country for Wolfie's education.
Sounds fun until you remember that the teachers will have to look for new jobs once these kids graduate.

I wish the U.S. had this school program. Kids need physical activity all throughout the day, help clean the school and participate in helping each other. Great video!❤
Agreed, our education system is flawed compared to this on so many levels.
This will never happen. It's not about the school, it's about how kids are raised. Americans will never help and clean their classroom. They're all spoiled, entitled brats.
You can find that, but it's rare and both the culture would need a radical change at all levels
Montessori schools are gaining popularity in the US
@DZB19oef yes and that is the problem! They hate themselfs! And project it! So sad.
An eye opening realities on Japanese school in rural areas. Its disheartening to have only 8 students while the teachers are so supportive. Thanks Paolo. Itsumo oen suru yo!
what are the steps taken by the Govt. to face such a challenge?
I hope and pray this school never shuts down and the number of students keeps increasing. Such beautiful and wonderful people running this school!!!
The Japanese culture is so focused on respect even saying thank you after safely crossing the street.
I am yugoslavian, generation 1985, it was ingrained to me to always wave and slightly bow to drivers who stop at pedestrian crossings, although the level is definitely different in Japan :)
One of the many benefits of homogeneity
In contrast the american culture is focus in flaunting one's ego and stepping over others to reach the top!
@@Saavik256 I'm from Japan, but currently living in California. I don't notice it myself, but people at work always tell me that I bow when i'm talking to customers on the phone. I guess it's true when they say "old habits die hard" 😅
Kid of the 80's, it was yes / no sir / ma'am to everyone. You had to hold the fork / knife proper. No elbows on table etc, I still remember being stabbed in the arm with a fork.
I'm 47 I have to catch myself, saying ma'am and sir to teenagers out in the world. I put my elbows on the table, because I'm lazy and it feels comfortable.
However seeing people not hold a table utensil correctly, makes me twitch and think bad thoughts. No joke seeing someone ham fist food into their mouth, drives me up a wall.
Bringing professsionals to the school and talking about their lives must be really eye opening for the students. How I wished my school did that. It would really help shape careers at an earlier age.
Man, this school does a lot of things I wish my school would've also done! and they say Finnish education is good... 🥲
I probably would have been a marine biologist if one came to my school to talk to me when I was younger. That's what I always wanted to do as a kid but life got in the way.

I still can't believe this whole school is functioning to this level just for 8 children. And LOL at the dog staring at you at the end!
as an elementary school teacher myself, this is my fave video of yours so far!! i love getting to know what a school this small is like! where I'm from, those 8 students would get transfered out of here in a second! their district allowing this to happen is amazing and i love to see these kids and the staff thriving!!! they all look so happy :") thank you for this beautiful episode, Paolo!
28:22 hahaha the kid just straight up playfully slapped the principal/coach! You can tell that he cherishes his students a lot.
lol that was unexpectedly funny af
Ikr the way the kid shrieks "Don't say that" is funny too😂@@qeqeuna1440
in previous generations, that would have been unacceptable.
8 kids and three from one family. What a great story. Thank you sharing
For real.
I've never heard of a school with a bigger staff than actual student body.
I like the school principal. I'm surprised that none of the kids said, "I wanna be a school teacher or principal when I grow up."😁
At first I thought it was a video focusing on one class, but no, it's actually the whole student body because there is a lack of students due to the declining birth rate. I was sitting here thinking, 'Wow, that's a great student to teacher ratio, I'm sure these kids are doing well', but it's far more depressing than I thought...
It’s not a great story when you know this is because of the depressingly low birth rate in Japan. There’s no kids.
I envy those kids having small class sizes and having the teacher given them constant attention for the entire class period
I'll be rooting for that doctor inventor comedian!
I have to tell you Paolo, Day in a Life series may be one of the best, if not the best in UA-cam.
Agree 100%
Agreed!!
Well it is
I love how the kids bow to thank the drivers for letting them cross the street. We taught our kids to give a little wave to the drivers to let them know it's safe to drive on. Japanese kids are so cute.
In America what’s up bro 😊
Lot nicer then USA Kids ‘ Good parenting ‘ Skills and learning good behavior. Thats what matters ‘ specially if no one Cares about the kids. Kids our the next generation, gos behavior and kindness gos long way .
I was 90s baby 200s kid ‘ USA Was used to be lot more kind to kids ‘ less Un safe in USA . Now in Cali els we’re war just go to school or go to basic needs such shopping. We need learn from this video:..
seriously.. these kids are sooo well behaved. they help clean the school, clean the tables, so ridiculously responsible for little kids. I wish they could bring some of this to the states...
In America, kids can flip you. At least in blue states. 😂
I wish I could hug those teachers. They care so much and take their job seriously. Thinking back at my time at school some teachers just hated kids.
I love the sense of community and culture. I hope learning Japanese calligraphy and traditional Japanese instruments in school never goes away.
It so heartwarming to see the teachers and principal still going above and beyond even though they have only 8 students. Definitely my favorite day in the life video.
Wow that must be amazing to just have 8 students to a teacher. I know it'll make a big difference in their lives.
For real.
5:19 8 students with 11 teachers. What a waste. That money could be used by offering parents better work life balance.
5:35 It's actually 11 teachers to 8 students. :O
@@beo456 8 students in Japanese school building than USA were they're way more than 8 kids.
I think people are going to miss how it's stated this is not typical and concerning.
I really adore and appreciate how involved the Principal is. Even though the number of students are small, it was really cool seeing him greet them from morning to the end as their afterschool soccer coach. In the US, I remember ours would sometimes greet us in the mornings, but other than that, we rarely saw the Principal at all. You can really see how comfortable and close the kids are with him. I hope this school only continues to grow from this point on out!
true, the way the kid smacked their principal after the principal spilled a little too much info shows that their bond is closer than just being on a teacher-student level.
Waahh the kids seem so lively!! I can feel their enthusiasm, and i became enthusiastic too for some reason😂 I really love japanese elementary school system where their encourage the students to practice good values and introducing them to many things they can pick up when they grow up! And i also love the fact that they are encouraging the kids to dream by inviting the professionals to talk about their dream!
Normally i don't really comment but i gotta say this video was definetly special and so informative! I hope the school will soon get more students💜
It's SO amazing to see how well the kids are taken care of away from home. Japanese culture gets a lot of things right that I wish was implemented in other places. A healthy balance here of nutritious foods, lessons of respect, cooperation and teamwork, and lots of one on one time for each student to thrive. I love that the educators get to have their own time too to ensure they can give their best to the kids. This was wonderful to watch, thanks Paolo!!!!!!
But they have hikikomori, so I guess this school is not representative of the school system in overall
Wonderful, how it's filmed mostly from a childrens perspective instead of the top down adult view. Small change, big impact.
This video makes me wish I could become a kid and go to that elementary school. They really seem to care about the students. I wish them the best and how the numbers go up for them!
I hope they get more students, the staff are amazing🥹🥹
My daughter attended a Japanese school while we were stationed there, offering us as parents a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in Japanese culture alongside her. I appreciate you sharing this video with us.
Cool.
What strikes me the most are their little assignments. It instills discipline and responsibility for their later lifes. In Germany we don’t have that and many people struggle with the most basic tasks later in life.
Yeah being from germany as well. German schools were horrible when i went. This school is small yet better equipped than any german school.
Hell im in university and i get jealous of this rural japanese elementary school

Paolo we request you to film a Day in the Life of a Japanese Elementary / High School Teacher btw, this one was superb ❤ . Love from Philippines.
Even though Japan’s declining birth rate is a major problem, their educational system is so unique and interesting. They really incorporated knowledge with culture. Students nt only learn the typical maths, language, sciences but also their own cultural musical instruments, calligraphy, independence, responsibility, environmental preservation, animal care & sports etc. So so good. Most complete educational system👍🏽👍🏽😭
Those children are so bright and adorable!
For real. So adorable and smart.
This video is awesome. As a teacher in Northern Mexico, I love to see how schools work in Japan, especially particular institutes as this one. It helps to get new ideas and find inspiration. Thanks, Paolo, I have always wanted you to create a video like this. Please, share more in the future and congratulations on the success.

Same in Sweden, school is such a horrible environment. I really think it does more bad than good for most kids.
These kids are living the best life. Although we have to remember that most Japanese schools probably aren't this calm. This is a very, very small school after all.
YES WHAT A GREAT WAY TO BEGIN MY WEEKEND. THANK YOU PAOLO

Yup, great video
Cleaning everywhere in school, clearing up and returning school lunches to its central store, various outside garden work. Students in Japan will grow up with a different mindset and respectfulness than most other countries. This is probably what shines through in society later. No wonder Japanese fans clean up football stadiums and locker rooms.
All of those teachers seem wonderful! I understand not necessarily wanting children, but I hope that school gets more students. Such a lovely place for children. It would be a shame to lose it
All joking aside, these educational institutions for kids are exceptional !! What an absolute blessing to have a school system that actually cares for their students and spend extensive time and resources on educating them real life skills asking with academics !!
This has to be one of your best videos to date (which is already a high standard to begin with). Not only was this interesting, but I really appreciated how you chose this to connect to a modern concern. Also, I could see this being used in classrooms (much like many of your other videos). And while you always show enthusiasm for whatever topic you're covering, there was something extra special this time, but maybe that's just me.
Lastly, someone give that entire staff a raise and buy their curry. What a lovely school.
it's not just you - I got the feels on this one too! What a beautiful video. I don't comment often, but this was very special.
This is wonderful. It's no wonder that kids in Japan grow up with strong ethics. I love the idea of asking the kids their dreams and then bringing professionals from that world into the school to meet with them. Very powerful. When I was in Tokyo I was always struck by young kids with their backpacks getting onto trains on their own amongst all the bustle.
I feel so proud about human, while watching this video. I feel joy because people around these kids know how important are them in our society, and they keep doing everything for them. An entire school waiting for them, with all teachers and all people who care of them.
Love the kiddos' energy - at each opportunity after their formal task, they are immediately onto the next fun thing. I think this speaks volume of the School's closely-knitted and free-will environment - the part the kid tap on the principal's stomach when he joked about them winning first grades was the funniest.
On the flip side, I am rather upset by the possible closure of such a nice establishment due to dwindling population. The facilities (and even flooring) and people were so nice that I would have love studying there (and be encouraged to go school everyday) when I was young.
Thank you for featuring!
Thank you for making videos that supports local Japan. I really appreciate seeing the country side of Japan. You guys are doing great with the videos and contents
What a lovely, heartwarming community! There are great things about living in a big city, but I have to envy their connectedness and the slower pace of life. Those teachers also seem so kind and positive and attentive to their students. I love how the teachers and students all seem to be pitching in and working toward common goals for the benefit of all
There's an anime called 'non non biyori' that depict this kind of rural school with very few kids.
This was one of my favorite videos on your channel, maybe even on the platform. I appreciate the time you took to convey the nuances of this school in particular. It’s been very eye-opening and has reminded me about why I became so engrossed in studying Japanese when I started a couple years ago-something I’ve come to forget recently. I didn’t really expect to be so moved by a video like this. Goes to show that your effort matters and is appreciated. Thank you Paolo and 光神小学校 sharing your stories :)
As a teacher, this is absolutely incredible touching. Teachers are truly shaping the life of these students. I hope the wishes of the principal became true
Every parent and faculty member works together to give those kids such an amazing education. Having teachers be so attentive with them being that it’s so few children, is the best for kids to be able to be heard when asking questions. What great hearts the adults have to be so involved. ❤
This is such a big difference compared to german rural schools. Really amazing what values and skills they teach their children there.
This was absolutely incredible! Such a unique opportunity to be able to see the day in the life of a school like this. It was amazing to see how motivated the students were and how enthusiastic their teachers were. To see everyone cooperate with each other in the daily activities of the school made me so happy. I really hope the school is able to remain open no matter how few students they have. It’s wonderful that the students are able to have such close bonds with the teachers and get the attention that they need. The experience they have in the school in these formative years of their life will have a huge impact on them as they get older and go out into the world. Although population decline is a major issue in Japan, it is great to see the benefits that a small classroom size has on children 😊
REALLY LOVED THIS ONE PAOLO! ❤ Thanks so much for making this one - our family loved it (and our kids said they want to go to school there! 😊) Thank you so much to the family, students, teachers and principal for sharing their beautiful school with us ❤🙏🏼
This is very surreal. Something about this school is comforting yet eerie at the same time, great video
So cute!
The school oddly reminds me of my old primary school in regional Australia. We had a few more students in the school (I think there were only about 12-14). We didn't have nearly as many rooms or teachers but the students all got along really well and we all did our best. I miss the place sometimes.
I cant help but think that there children are receiving treatment that royals of past could only get! I remember reading about Henry the 8ths children having 5 different tudors and instructors! It might be sad for the town but what an opportunity for truly learning a subject!!
It’s heartbreaking that their population is dwindling, I hope they are able to figure out a solution to get it back up so this school can be thriving with children again.
Please do a day in the life video of some frontline health care workers (doctors, nurses, police officers, etc.)! Like Day in the Life of a Japanese Doctor (ex. Family physician, emergency physician, neurologist, etc.) That would be awesome, thanks!
Two schools in my area had similar numbers (both less than 20 kids). But a few years ago the city closed them and now those kids get taken by bus to a larger, consolidated school (where I work as an English teacher). A bit sad I guess, but necessary from a budgetary point of view. And it’s kind of cute, the school buses they take have the names of the original village schools.
Unfortunately, these small rural schools with merged classes don't survive long, I think they are virtually gone in my country.
In addition to the shortage of kids, teachers don't want to go there because they are usually remote, especially if there are minority kids.
These videos always teach us so much about Japanese culture. A country built on respect and hard work. Thank you Paolo!

These kids are actually getting much better education than the latter! They basically have one on one classes. The principal is a really good guy also. You can tell he really loves what he does and those kids love him as well.
one on one classes are not good for development though. maybe good for learning knowledge but not sharing ideas or getting to know different viewpoints. i felt sad for the girl on her own in class with an empty desk beside her.

I really enjoyed this one Paolo. The staff is so nice, and the kids get to have such a individualized learning experience, yet still get a lot of social interactions. I really hope their numbers increase and they can continue to provide that city with their services.
For someone like me living in Denmark, this is so interesting to see 🥰
Some things are the same and some things are VERY different. This school would have been closed here long ago, for budgetary reasons. The school lunch and learning aspect is really great. I wish we had that here. Also saves the parents a lot of time. Great positive staff.
Paolo, thank you for your contribution to the general education of the world ❤
The children in Japan are so well behaved and considerate. Very well taught at home and in school.
This is a really insightful and lovely video. You could see how much the teachers and principal care about each student, and it was great to see how well all the kids got along, too.
I really hope the school continues to thrive, and that more students join. Truly seems like an amazing learning environment
Man, I wish I'd gone to this kind of school when I was growing up! Great work, and the drone shot of the school was awesome! I love how you guys keep getting better and better with your videos. I also adore that you're spotlighting these local Japanese areas that need more support to keep helping their local community. I love these videos!
It's great to see the kids interacting with plants and animals.
One of the best episodes yet!! Brought me to tears multiple times
