A legend! One of the best riff players ever. To my mind up there with Marcus Miller and Mark Adams for consistently creating grooves that elevate a track and become reference points for many who take up the four strings. To read a post that Nate Phillips lacks technique is frankly laughable. Its not just about the high watermak left by Glide, its the quality of the body of work for Pleasure and other artists. Listen to the licks on "No Matter What" (Pleasure - Get To The Feeling ) and you have the reason why he and Bruce Carter (Drums) were booked by Bobby Lyle to anchor the groove on the track "Rhap So Dee" (Night Fire album).

I"m Surprised so many people never listened to his Pleasure Stuff I'll throw out more hints look up Pleasure 1979 albums. If you want some challenging thought bass lines....!!! Nate Phillips created some of the best, particularly outside of jazz...at that time period...

Listen, I always thought that Nate was the bomb back in the day when he played with Pleasure. I also know about his work with Ronnie Laws. His bass is tight! I'm a bassist myself, and I can say this: if anyone has followed Nate, they would know how he plays! He's the s**t! No doubt about it! For all upcoming bassists, myself included, research who he played with. He has amazing bass lines for anyone to comp. Check him out! As said about Nate, I'll say about other bassists. Check out their work, and what they're doing now. There's a lot to explore. Catch up to you later in my next comment. Ciao!

Do you know who Nate Phillips is...? Look up the group Pleasure song - Glide, Universal, and it's that Nate Phillips....who invented those bass lines. Probably only second to Bernard Edwards Good times bass line......

All due respect to this talented bassist but that "so-low" would have been good back in the early to mid 60's before Stanley Clarke, Jaco, Anthony Jackson and Louise Johnson came on the scene.
But besides all of the noisy, sloppy and frivolous licks, preacher pauly's dance steps and distorted ruckus it was a pretty good solo for a 5th grader.
