Thanks for posting this George. I have this engine in a 118d. I've heard so many horror stories about the timing chain failures that I was curious. Mine is on 89k miles, but drives like new and is so quiet on idle it makes the newer diesels sound loud. Also mine is on the original clutch and mass flywheel too, there is some slippage under hard acceleration but other than that it's fine. Thanks again for posting.

@@Turbostott dammm that just crazy, i was asked the same just a week ago. but you know what bro? just buy yourself a set of cheap tools and start doing your own work. i used to work in my honda civic back when i was 15/16. this wont be a big of a difference

I'm ok with the spanners TBF, it was more a case of time contraints with a 4 yr old and not wanting to do this on the drive, the idea with this car was to have it as a reliable everyday workhorse, the last thing I wanted to be doing was ripping it's guts out on day 1. I'm going to have this car for a long time so it's worth investing in as I paid good money for a very good car. Over the 1.5 years I've done plenty to sort out the irritations and problems associated with the e61 and am now in a position where there is literally nothing wrong with it, and should remain that way for some time. To date I have rewired the wiring to the rear tailgate, replaced the intercooler, aircon condenser, replaced all fluids, serpentine belt serviced all and relocated all the relays / controls that BMW thought was a great idea to put in the well of the boot, where from time to time water does build up. Next up is a remap which I have booked in in a couple of weeks to help wake it up and hopefully see me 50mpg. I'm extremely happy with the car, and George has done some fantastic work, even how to clean the damn thing well which have all been very informative and much more 'in the real world' in so much as not throwing megga £££ at it and also not just a load of ol' repetitive waffle which can be seen in a rival you-tubers post frequently.
Hi George. Just(according to your tutorials) finished removal of engine, and tear down ready to replace the timing chain system with new parts. 2008, 520 d, automatic, 305 000 km on the clock. I noticed that there is relatively no slack in the upper and midle chain. All guides look ok. The oil pump chain have a slack of approx 15 mm.. May the "rattle" and a "knock" sometimes come from the oil pump chain? Or(as I think) do the worn chains and guides make noice when engine starts/run. Br, Audun
Waow, and this is after having to take every cable and connector off to get the cover separated. Jeepers. Bit more work than my old manta which had nothing to disconnect, literally just the cover bolts and a couple of pipes and max 1hr to do.
great job. i'd like to know you have done a lot of work to get the engine out of car, why don't you open the engine and check valve and piston, oel rings ...?

Great video, can't wait for the next one 👍 As your timing chain is in good condition, why replace it? Will all N47 suffer this problem if they haven't already. Is this fault not covered under BMW Recall, I've read some articles on the Net suggesting it Could be.
My belief is that BMW would deny there is a problem if trying to get them to rectify the engine... And I can’t say that I would trust them to complete the job, one of the reasons why I do all my work myself so I know exactly what has been done. There’s no knowing the condition of my whole timing chain kit was like, the tensioners, sprockets etc. Always best to replace them since I’ve already done the hard work of removing the engine👍🏻
George at 10:04 the oil cap ring, what would cause smoke coming from under them sides? Normally get a bit of smoke always showing from under the rubber ring. Thanks
I hate bringing up timing chain noise as its very subjective, but were you hearing an "slack" sounding noises or kind of ratchet noises, because i definitely am from my one.
Jay Patel my N47 had this ratchet like sound too, obviously I can’t tell if it’s the exact same noises we both had but my chain guides were completely broken at the top of the engine upon tear down, I also had a really horrible 2 second rattle on start up’s too which I believe was the tensioner. I would definitely suggest just biting the bullet and having the chains done and don’t bring it near BMW
@@robbieshaft cheers, I'm not getting the noise on start up, but I'm definitely going to do the chains in the summer, I'm looking out for any new noises or changes to the current ones.
Jay Patel good stuff, I’d take it handy till then with it if I was you, I’d imagine the ratchet making noise is maybe a broken guide but I could be wrong

my n47 engine had 132000 miles on the clock the injector came out after wiggling them a lot, wasnt too bad was expecting to be worse
They may have came out once before. Mine were properly stuck because they’ve never came out before

Been quoted 1200 for timing chain or 1500 if it snaps to rebuild engine fitted
I paid 2400 for Timing Chain, clutch and flywheel, camshaft brassings and One or another thing more like oil pump

Yes. Having done it the hard way. I would be brave enough to try it in the bay now.

It wasn’t a slapping noise, more of a louder tapping noise. The slapping noise means your tensioner is failing
Jay Patel my N47 had this ratchet like sound too, obviously I can’t tell if it’s the exact same noises we both had but my chain guides were completely broken at the top of the engine upon tear down, I also had a really horrible 2 second rattle on start up’s too which I believe was the tensioner. I would definitely suggest just biting the bullet and having the chains done and don’t bring it near BMW
