      @@emotionalintelligence776 because iPods are no longer in production, they are indeed becoming more rare every time an iPod is damaged beyond repair. Random22 did not claim that iPods are rare, just that they are becoming more rare. Even something that is abundant could be becoming more rare if its moving from not very rare at all to slightly rarer

    You’ve inspired me to rejuvenate my two iPod 4th gen classics, one is mono and the other is color. I already replaced the batteries, but will now upgrade from 20 GB to 128 GB flash. I know it’s easier to buy a new, old stock iPod 4th gen Touch with 32 GB for $70, but that’s not as much fun. Thanks for your videos. I subscribed.

    I recently purchased an ipod 5.5 30 gb with the Wolfson dac for around $85. I've ordered the iflash sd drive which will then have a 64gb sd card (plenty of storage for me) and will also install a new battery while I got the ipod opened up. Well worth the cost and work. Comment about the end of your video: I never had wheel-based iPod growing up, just a SanDisk MP3 player that I flashed up with Rockbox and, when I'd saved up for it, a 5th gen iPod touch. I've always been a Mac fan and loved the concept of the click wheel interface.
    After seeing a few videos like this and some threads on Reddit, I made the decision to get a couple of 'parts and repair' iPods on eBay and try my hand at opening them up and refurbishing them. I screwed up the first couple of attempts, but ended up with one that worked pretty decently.
    With that first project out of the way, I've ordered a 7th gen iPod and iFlash adapter to do up as a new daily driver iPod. One of my coworkers offered to pay me to upgrade his iPod if mine goes well, so wish me luck 🤞

  • @nickkaraoke2128
    @nickkaraoke2128 4 роки тому +5

    The reason upgrading the 5th gen ipod is worthwhile is that it has one of the best DACs in any mp3 player ever made which is why I've just ordered the parts for my old 5th gen Ipod Video. Its stuck on a white screen, not recognized on iTunes or Windows so I think the hard drive is kaput. Gonna try a 512gb microSD card, 3000mah battery and capacitors mod.

    • @Shelboooooo
      @Shelboooooo 4 роки тому

      Capacitor mod only works through the 30 pin, you probably already know that. But if you did not you need to make another adapter for the 30pin to headphone for superior audio, and maybe a headphone amp.

    • @eeandersen
      @eeandersen 4 роки тому

      How did your 512 mod go? I'm considering taking my old 30G iPod to something greater; 256 or 512, but I've learned that the 30G iPod is RAM limited to 32mb. The iPod OS creates a database for the contents in that RAM which limits the storage capacity of the HD. 80G iPods have 64mb of RAM with greater capacity.

      @DcSoundOp Well everything worked and one TB was recognized on my ipod fifth gen thirty gigabyte. I successfully loaded all of my music onto it, And even a few movies and t v shows and everything played just fine. The problem happened when I went to install rock box. Upon reboot the ipod is bricked. I just get a sad mac face and then it flashes to low battery even though it's a brand new 3000mAh battery. I know my next step is to format the drive and try again. , but I don't have a way to connect my mSata drive into my pc. It's back to the drawing board for me, waiting on more parts purchased from ebay.(new mSata, mSata to USB, a few more iflashs, a few colored cases.) It's all or nothing. I found my new hobby and am building a new collection. I'm still in recovery from watch collecting and ipods are WAY cheaper.

    I just replaced the battery and a screen from an old iPod video I had. The battery was so bad it would die in under 5 minutes. If I knew about the SD card upgrade, I would have bought a kit and done that too. Not that I need more space, more that I don't expect much more life out of a spinning hard drive.
    I've been using it as a jukebox on my stereo in the living room. My spouse isn't very tech savvy but has had iPods, so it makes it easy on them.

    For the screws attach a little magnet to the bottom case and put the screws there. So it becomes a very handy tray for this. For the cards: If you have a larger card tha 64Gb you need to format it as Fat32, since the larger cards are formatted as exFat by default and the Ipod may have issues with it

    Thanks, you had the information I've been looking for which is formatting the new SD card for the iPod. I looked at the iFlash site and there were articles about formatting but it seemed like that was for formatting on a PC not a Mac. I have a old 5.5 gen iPod with an original "Tarkan" adapter I guess Tarkan has revamped now calling them iFlash. My adapter looks very different. My SDXC card mounts from the side not from the top. Good to know a new SDXC card doesn't need formatting prior to installing into adapter...pretty important info. The iFlash sight should say that maybe they do but I couldn't find it.

    I would pick "spend the money and make the product useful again". Recycling is always good in any shape or form. It's good for the planet and personal satisfaction. Acquiring more things only provides temporary joy but will eventually add more worry if the item is more superficial than useful. I find these days people need to learn to be more efficient and look towards minimalism as a way of life. People in the long run will be much happier.

      Using the iFlash Quad, you could theoretically exceed a terabyte by using four 256 GB cards. Do keep in mind, though, that there is a software limitation as to how many songs you can have in your database, so you would probably only want to exceed 128GB or so if you're using lossless audio files.

    Hey, I have a samsung Evo 128gb as well as san disk 32gb class 4 SD card. I see the use iTunes to restore screen successfully. However, when I connect with my pc for restoring, it sometimes fails. At times it succeeds, but after restore is complete, it again shows me the error (sad iPod logo). Any idea what could be wrong? I use the cf adapter. Could it be that or the cable which I’m connecting with pc with, or should I try buying the san disk ultra card? Any input from you would be appreciated. Thanks.

      Hey Arslaan, are you using the iFlash CF adapter or another brand? I didn't have any luck with the generic one I had, but I know lots of folks online have used them. Also, how are you using SD cards in a CF adapter? Is there another adapter between those? Do your SD cards have the write protect tab closed? Let me know some more specifics & hopefully someone here with more experience will be able to help. Thanks for the message.

      @@DcSoundOp I got both of these things, the cf and zif adapter on aliexpress few years back and still have them installed in ipod. My cf to zif has a single micro sd card slot, its actually different from the full size ones we usually find in online videos (like the one you initially had) . I even followed the steps to format the cards posted on iflash website but no avail. Micro sd cards don’t have any write locks as such, I’ll still look at that once again . I wonder if the restore shows up, then why doesn’t it restore successfully? Confuses me a lot. Please enlighten your thoughts on this. I hope we can come up with a solution. Thank you again.

      Hey Blaze,
      I don't do these conversions for a living or anything so I don't have enough of a data set to say what is normal, but 10 hours sounds like there is something up with the battery.
      I've had drastically different results with replacement batteries for all sorts of different tech, from laptops to cameras and various other gear over the years. Even the same model battery from the same seller but ordered at different times can have totally different results.
      I always try to buy the factory original replacement battery when possible. For projects like this where that's not available, I often order batteries from two or three different suppliers to get one that works.
