I'm truthly blown away with your skillz set. Before i give a little info on me, let me ask you where we or I can find the click switches you're using on your video? Don't have to be exact, but close enough to work with your video if needed. About me I been playing with the iPod Classic 5.5 80g thick back units. I've modified (4) units so far. A 2TB (Mem cards), 1TB (Mssd), 1/2TB (500Gb Mssd), and 80GB to be modified to 4TB when parts come in. Its been an adventure I must say. Will answer any questions if needed. Awesome video that I plan to use for Blue Tooth mod 4TB first. The four slot card sold on the internet I plan to use with 1TB(4) memory cards. I format each flash drive or Mssd drive to exfat before i connect to ituned, faster process thru itune. Nuff said for now
Hornet72blue it’s a switch about 1cm/x1cm, I believe there is an arduino kit that comes with a set of them soldered to a board. That’s where I got mine from anyway.
Looks like top shelf work. Not sure about the blue tack (looks messy!) but whatever got you to your final product is great. I was really impressed with that little bit of push button ingenuity. The biggest issue with BT modding an Ipod for me has definitely been what to do re: pairing. With the push button adhered to the lock button, this becomes a non-issue. That chonky back is something else for a seventh gen. Is it twice as thick as an actual 7th gen back? I have been sitting on my flash modded 7th gen and BT transmitter for months now. Perhaps some time soon.
It's not that much thicker, maybe 3-4mm. It definitely looks a lot larger when compared to the thin back, but you quickly get used to it and honestly doesn't really impact its daily use. It's not a brick like the 20gb iPod Second Gen lol.
Great video, Its probably just outside my skill set, a kit I could handle but the modifications required to make it work might be too problematic, I guess if I ordered multiples than the safety net of that would allow me to get the job done. The idea is firmly rooted now and even if I just do the giant battery upgrade alone with a thick back plate thats something. thanks for the tips, I'll be back some time to leave a reply of what I did with my system. :)
This would be a dream come true for me. I own a iPod Classic with 1 terabyte solid state storage. I would love to use it through bluetooth to pair with my Pioneer SX-750. I know a bluetooth can be added to the receiver, but didn't know the iPod could. Subscribed. :o)
Would be interesting seeing something like this done with one of those official ipod bluetooth adapters that use the usb cable port so you could also change tracks with the controls on headphones or in a car.
There are actually transmitters that can do this over the AUX connection, unfortunately they're much bulkier normally. If someone can find a compact one I'd love to give it a shot!
Curious if there might be a way to change the default name of the transmitter so that it read as say "Tim's iPod" when connecting. Excellent video, by the way. I think I will have a go at this, myself.
Unfortunately I don’t think there are any transmitters that let you change the name. Although you may be able to contact the manufacturer and get them set up from the factory as such.
Awesome work! I have 2 questions tho 1. The Audio Jack preserve it's functions? 2. The audio level and shifting tracks can be used by the Bluethoot control of the Headphones?
hes probably just using the imac as a display for a mac mini somewhere around it or inside it (i'm aware of such a mod for these old imacs) the catalina patcher is only compatible with intel macs, so that would make sense tbh
Thank you so much for your astonishing work. And for the video, and for the music in this video, and for the calm and intelligible manner of presenting information. -) Well, unfortunately, I won't dare to do that. I will still master the simplest mechanical work of disassembling and assembling, but all this soldering and adjustment is hardly. Yes, in fact, it would be great to be able to acquire such things from modern artisans performing engineering miracles. I would definitely buy one.
you can get bluetooth dongles made for the nintendo switch and just click them into the headphone jack. not a perfect solution, but it's a no-mod solution. there are also a few brand of dock-connector based bluetooth transmitter. same goes for ipod docks, you can get dock adapters that turns an ipod dock into a bluetooth speaker with remote support.
Some LPs come with downloads but not all do, and they don't always advertise the download. For instance, Back To Black Vinyl releases often have the download advertised on the front, but if you pick up a new Metallica LP it probably will include a download but it won't say so on the packaging.
Man, I love the ingenuity, but please stop dousing these types of mods in hot glue. If your solder joints don't hold on their own, they aren't good enough for a reliable connection anyway.
Just to clarify, what you said is correct, but for the case of this mod I decided to re-enforce the wires with hot glue, as I plan on opening and closing this iPod quite often to work on it, as i bend the wires I don't want to put un neccesary strain on small joints. Hot glue protects them from this and can be removed quite easily if need be in the future. Also if you drop your iPod the hot glue can give a bit of impact resistance.
I followed all your directions. They were perfect. The only issues I have are that using the hold switch as a button made the hold slide brittle, it is easily pushed underneath the backplate - so I am going to cut a hole for the bluetooth button instead. The second issue is the bluetooth range... despite cutting a hole in the metal behind the screen, the range is poor - with stuttering even at pocket distance, I am thinking about how i might go about improving this
If the hold switch is getting pushed into the metal frame your button likely is to weak or not mounted close enough to the switch. It should exert some pressure onto it to make it harder to press in, but easy to flick from side to side. As for the Bluetooth Range make sure you've aligned the antenna behind the hole you cut in the screen protecter, or try removing it entirely. The type of Bluetooth Transmitter or headphones you are using can also be a factor.
@@Pendleton115 Interestingly enough I looked at how you put the board into the ipod antenna side toward the back of the ipod. When I closed the case with the board in that direction the reception was much better. I wonder if the bluetooth connection reflects off the back of the ipod provides a much stronger connection that way...
@Dan Christiani @Pendleton115 I get the same issue, when I put it in my pocket it cuts out sometimes even after removing the metal behind the screen. Did you find any fix for it? I even tried soldering on my own wire antenna but I get only slightly better results.
I've just got to the point where I'm about to rebuild my old 30 GB iPod Classic (awaiting a new battery as well as a headphone jack & hold switch). I'm content with the hard drive for now though the SD drive is pretty tempting). So are the bluetooth adaptations though soldering is a bit beyond me (at the moment) though everything else is pretty easy (about a half-hour of work if everything goes as planned). The SD drive is also easy work as well.
@@archkull Thanks for asking! Shockingly easy. Once you take into account the hard drive the iPod Classic case is virtually empty, making repairs really simple. Ironically enough, it helped that the original battery swelled a bit, which with an accidental drop forced the case open and I didn't have to do any prying.
@@screenPhiles no Bluetooth, I never got into it personally. Every time I connect the converter, the iPod gets stuck on "very low battery please wait", even though its a brand spanking new battery. I did this a long time ago, less the BT module. I have the iFlash Quad though. After seeing this, I am thinking of adding a BT module. Think I can fit it? @@jxirocxmpos The audio out of an iPod sounds much better than a smart phone. Also you don't have to kill your phone battery listening to music or waste space on your phone to do so.
well that didnt age well...
just use an ipod touch
I can't stop watching this beautiful innovative re-design of an iPod Classic. It is for the genius mind and brains.
OMG. What a great Idea to use the hold swith as the bluetooth control button! This changes everything... now i will definitelly build bluetooth into my Ipod! Thank you very much for sharing!
Honestly this is would be a good idea what a iPod classic pro would be like in 2016 if they had not discontinued it. And this is probably one of the most polished iPod mods as your not losing functionality or making it look different, just a sick look
That was absolutely phenomenal Sir. After that Posting, I am now 100% ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that I will never be able to have Bluetooth capability, on my 1TB, 7Th Gen, 3000 Mah Ipod. I Guess the cords gonna be as good as it gets for me. Nevertheless, thank you for the Posting Sir.
Liked that iPod dock at the end, I have two of them now! I used a jail-broken iPod touch to turn them into Airplay speakers.
How much hot glue?
Pandleton: Yes
Honestly, the improvements over his build are good for people who love headphone jacks
this deserves so much more views
No the use of hot glue and sticky tach is gross wtf.
This is absolutely sickkk. I love the simplicity of the iPod and now it's even better.
I ordered all the parts to get this mod done..with the extra space on the iflash they themselves can incorporate a BT 5.0 module & make a ribbon cable splitter for power🔋 & audio..all we would need to do is add our own button 🤔
YUNVMY COOLNAME now this would be awesome
I have the 6th gen 160gb version so I’m wondering my options for this.
Too much work for me 😂 I admire your dedication
Great work!
One tip, don't brush with solder. That can lead to cold solder joints that break.
You are a true craftsman. I like the Apple iPod Dock, I have one too. I have a an old iPod touch docked in it. So I can listen to music stored on the iPod, or from Spotify, or with the help of an (jailbroken ) app, I can turn it into an AirPlay receiver and send whatever music I want from my iPhone.
Well done Tim. Very brave of you. I was about to begin my conversion until I learnt that both my ipod's have the EU volume limiter built into them. Until there's a hack they're only fit for scrap!
with my old ipod, a old 5th gen... i could pry it open with my fingers, it sadly had a mother board problem and broke. don't know where it went, but this mod is amazing! keep up the good work.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!! Don't be ashamed of the fact you're an audiophile! Wear it with pride and let yourself enjoy the great hobby!
Id buy that, something super comfy about the scroll wheel and airpods. I love that you didnt do anything to change the aesthetics of the ipod for the bluetooth.
Those jungle albums are both some of the best shit I have ever heard, incredibly underrated artist
They are my favorite 😄

Amazing Idea of Click Button idea near the Hold Switch. Hats Offf!!!1 You just got another subscriber.
I’ve done this following your guide, many thanks for it, only issue I have is I’m only getting sound out of one side of my headphones
This is fantastic! Great job! Also your production style, music choices and narration is top notch! The DankPods channel is good, but can become grating with his loud and in your face UA-camr style.
Had to do this for my ipod 5th gen as I was sick of it not playing in my car with its wire. Kept on saying Play list error. Was worth it and there was no lag that you sometime get. Defo a project of you have an old ipod u wana revamp
I've never soldered anything in my life but I want to take on this project so bad!
What’s stopping you? Come one Jason you got this bud.
@@xandermoore8874 I actually did try this and completely destroyed the power module on the board
Good on you for trying!! Hell ya brother!! That board needed to learn its lesson.
@@xandermoore8874 lol thanks. I found a seller on eBay that sold just the power modules in bulk so I ordered 5 because I know I'll mess up more. Also the video doesn't do this justice, but the soldering pads are TINY on this board! I don't have the best eyesight nor the best soldering iron (some cheap $10 one I found on Amazon) so that's probably not helping. However with the power module outta the way, I was able to practice my technique and I might have the hang of it.
I'm also trying to use an off the shelf bluetooth module that modders have successfully used to add bluetooth to Game Boy Advances. It's $5 compared to the $20 one this guy uses and doesn't require breaking apart a consumer level product.
EDIT: The bluetooth part I'm using is the KCX_BT_EMITTER. Can be found on Ali Express.
@@pressxtojason Have you had another try at it and if so, how did it go Jason? I know what you mean about the tiny soldering pads after some experience with soldering tiny drone boards/modules, I ended up buying glasses with different lenses and built in lights to help, they work great.
Well. I just follow this guide and made it. Thank you very much for your help. The only thing that i would say is that i can heard some static when using bluetooth. And make sure the Bluetooth is off when connecting your headphones or you will short it.
I’ve had Bluetooth on with headphones connected and have not had any problems, you shouldn’t be getting any static either, are you sure all your grounding wires are correctly connected? :)
@@Pendleton115 i saw what was the problem the power button cable for the Bluetooth the bate cable was taouching the back plate of the ipod. I have earphones that have copper al around. So when i inserted the jack. It was shorting the jack with the back plate and consecuently with the ipod. And i can heard static at low volume. But i dont have a solution for that.
@@Pendleton115 and i put this video on reddit because people were asking how i did it.

Excellent vid! Thank you so much!
Yes I was very concerned from the moment I saw Dankmods bluetooth module being placed surrounded by metal!
Awesome. Awesome to the max. I'm looking into getting a modded 5.5 gen Classic right now. Lots of cool stuff is available for those right now.
I know this is old but just dug out my classic gen 5 to replace battery. I notice everyone struggling to get them open and I'd never done it probably this video came up in my feed . Anyway I used one of those tiny flat blade screwdrivers and the inserted a bunch of guitar picks and was even able to use the picks to slide around the edge and it opened surprising easily.
Yeah the 5th generation is easier to open since it's plastic and the 7th gen is aluminum
This is AMAZING!! A job well done! 👍
I wish I can send u my iPod to mod it for me! ☺️
Great video. To add Bluetooth in a pinch without a mode. You can add a Airfly adapter to the audio jack too.
what a bout USB-C?
It works with the audio jack. It changes via a USB-C port on the Airfly
I am more motivated than ever to do this. I have 5.5 gen and been wanting to do this but I want to add larger memory. I wonder if I'll be able to fit 4 sd cards in the larger chassis of the 5.5 gen
The max supported capacity of the 5.5 gen is 128GB, so 4 SD cards is kinda pointless. You can use one 128GB SD.

@@Pendleton115 Thanks you're the BOMB, much appreciated
Perhaps someone will combine Bluetooth and an SD/CF adaptor in the future :)
This is a very soothing video lmao the smooth jazz helped too
Looks like top shelf work.
Where do I get the thick back for my 7th gen?
I want to attempt this mod so bad now!! Great video my dude!
I’ve been wanting to see this video for a long time 🙂
Thanks so much I used this guide and another to make a 4th gen bluetooth.
:)
Duuuude you're amazing!! Thanks for this! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

@@ZLFProductions Oh interesting, may be possible. Although you'd need some nice soldering skills to solder to the 30 pin connector.
@@Pendleton115 couldn’t you bypass the 30 pin connector possibly?
Curious if there might be a way to change the default name of the transmitter so that it read as say "Tim's iPod" when connecting. Excellent video, by the way. I think I will have a go at this, myself.
Unfortunately I don’t think there are any transmitters that let you change the name. Although you may be able to contact the manufacturer and get them set up from the factory as such.
I WOULD SOOOO PAY THIS GUY DO DO THIS FOR ME

The real question is how you got Catalina running on an iMac g4
hes probably just using the imac as a display for a mac mini somewhere around it or inside it (i'm aware of such a mod for these old imacs)
the catalina patcher is only compatible with intel macs, so that would make sense tbh
DankPods is Amazing channel!
Thank you so much for your astonishing work. And for the video, and for the music in this video, and for the calm and intelligible manner of presenting information. -)
Well, unfortunately, I won't dare to do that.
The heck i never thought about that great idea w tge switch dongles lol
Also we watch a lot of same vids this is the 3rd-4th comm of urs I see LOL
*vinyl scratch sound effect* wait, vinyl's come with digital album's? I've been buying CD's wrong the entire time!
It depends, only some albums come with a digital copy, and more often than not it's not even marked on the box. But it is nice when they do :)
Some LPs come with downloads but not all do, and they don't always advertise the download. For instance, Back To Black Vinyl releases often have the download advertised on the front, but if you pick up a new Metallica LP it probably will include a download but it won't say so on the packaging.
How the range + quality? I did a similar mod with a different taotronics transmitter model, and the range was like two feel and it was very static-y
Man, I love the ingenuity, but please stop dousing these types of mods in hot glue. If your solder joints don't hold on their own, they aren't good enough for a reliable connection anyway.
Sure, let me know how your iPod holds up when the wires have no re-enforcement ;)
@@dmc7554 This is definitely possible. Although more testing would likely be needed to confirm.

Been 3 months how did it go
@@archkull Thanks for asking! Shockingly easy. Once you take into account the hard drive the iPod Classic case is virtually empty, making repairs really simple. Ironically enough, it helped that the original battery swelled a bit, which with an accidental drop forced the case open and I didn't have to do any prying.
@@screenPhiles glad to hear it went well dude!
I'm currently repairing an old 30 gb too but the SD conversion is being an idiot :(
@@archkull Are you converting it to bluetooth and flash? If it's just more of a standard restoration what problems are you seeing?
@@screenPhiles no Bluetooth, I never got into it personally.
Every time I connect the converter, the iPod gets stuck on "very low battery please wait", even though its a brand spanking new battery. No such problems with the HDD.
It's a CF converter, used with an adapter for micro SD.
The first time it worked, and I managed to get to the restore iPod part, but it got stuck constantly restoring.
Re formatted the card and now stuck like this.
Honestly couldn't find anything on this specific problem online so if you've got any pointers I'd appreciate it
Can you update the links to products or equivalent to urls that remain available? The current links have all been taken down.
I did this a long time ago, less the BT module. I have the iFlash Quad though. After seeing this, I am thinking of adding a BT module. Think I can fit it? Also, does the BT module stay lit only when pairing? If so, the lights might be a good thing to let bleed through. If there's a separate power and pair LED, then maybe just DC the power LED?
