7:28 thank you so much for including this in the video. I'd been considering picking up an iPod partly to install an SSD and use it as an external drive for backups, but seeing these numbers (coupled with the explanation that the ZIF is the bottleneck) made it clear that it simply wouldn't be worthwhile for those purposes.
The "protective film" you removed was meant to be there, you needed to remove the centre bit, leaving the surround foam to protect the LCD and also to stop dust getting between the outer screen and the LCD.
Can't speak about the protective film cause I didn't get a new screen, but the foam absolutely needs to be removed completely on the new faceplates. The old faceplates do not have this foam, and when I left it in while taking the center out, it leaves a gap visable from looking at the screen through the face plate window that the original doesn't have.
With a BLACK rear case! I have a 5.5 gen 30 gb with a black rear case and clear faceplate, a 3000 mAh battery and 128 SSD, running on Rockbox. I bought one of those leather Griffin case and it looks INSANELY beautiful!
Yes, they make these. I modded mine with 512GB SD card and I was able to find a black custom back with 512GB on the back. Of course the serial number doesn't match any more.
Awesome mod! Thank you so much for sharing. My 5gen 80gb died about 6 months ago. I replaced the battery about a year before that but this time the hardrive crapped out. I know now what I want to do with it, thanks to you.
Seen the transparent phones and all... but this is my absolute favorite project you have done! I wish i'd have such an amazing iPod. you do good content. Keep it up!
The 5th gen was my favourite ipod, with the black plastic case. I was perfected after many years. Guessing the 30GB version wouldn't take such a big battery, but it is probably a nicer form factor due to it being a lot thinner. Would be great if apple create such a device, they would sell many, although many people don't have mp3's anymore.

I’ve made a few custom upgraded iPod classics. Usually I only keep the motherboard and screen. Both the front and back plates are better off being replaced with brand new parts. I even went with a 4x MicroSD setup and made one a 1TB iPod. Then flash Rockbox OS on there to play FLAC files.
Fantastic video Hugh. I've recently upgraded my iPod Classic 120gb with a similar card, replacing the hard drive and the battery as well. It all works great! Unfortunately I bent up the case a bit during the repairs. I now want a new front plate and back case. I'm thinking of designing and 3D printing my own. I am inspired by your vids and may give it a shot. There is genuinely something about these iPods. They just sound better to me than a phone or other computer. I'm a bit of an audiophile and have built my own tube amplifier that I run my iPod through into some old JBL speakers. It sounds warm and fat and wonderful. I'm glad that you are able to get parts and keep iPods running. Thanks again for sharing your experience mate. Cheers from USA.🇦🇺🍻🇺🇸

Elite Obsolete, he's amazing. The 5.5 is by far the best model and best one to mod. I'm hoping one day he will start to do Bluetooth mods as well, so I can send mine back in and have it put in. I love that I have a dedicated jam box with no calls or texts, no worry about wifi or lack of, and I don't drain my data when driving like I did when I used my phone. I'm so happy with mine. I wish I capable and handy enough to have done the mods myself... but I'm still here watching and trying to learn, so that's gotta count for something, right?
Found this by accident, and this video fascinating. I myself used to mod the iPod 4 and 5 to better battery, SSD, and that same face plate. The problem I found was that I installed a duel boot iTunes and Rockbox. The Rockbox is my usual IOS, since it is far more flexible and easier to use than iTunes. I found that every once in a while, the SSD upon bootup would automatically erase the Rockbox, so I would have to re-install it (basically it was just copying over the .Rockbox directory). Overall that adapter for the SSD was a bit flimsy, granted that I used not an expensive adapter. My solution was the iPod Mini (2, bit the Mini 1 is also fine). No adapter needed. I just clip in an SSD used in standard cameras. Never, and not even once a problem. Rockbox and iTunes install perfectly. Sound is AMAZING. The iPod Mini is super easy to repair. I have only put in a 64 GB SSD max. I read that you can put in something larger if you wish, but you have to modify the Rockbox wares. I will look into it if / when I need a larger drive. I would love to find ways to further modify the iPod Mini. The case is a hunk of metal, and it feels GREAT in your hands. It's strong, well made. Only weakness in the device is the clip (ribbon) from the SSD to the MB can be flimsy, lots of pins, and the slightest bend can mean hours, HOURS trying to find and straighten it. And then, of course the pins bend / break. Finding new ones is not easy. Batteries are around, granted mine only last about 8 hours. Sorry for my rambling. Subscribed.

Just a Pro Tip when doing the storage mods, if you have a 30gb 5g iPod dont plan on putting more then around 20,000 songs on there, the logic board does not have enough RAM to load more songs into the library, even if you have enough storage. the thicc 60 and 80GB 5g versions have enough for around 50,000 songs. The only space is basically what the new battery leaves. And it has to natively take in the signal. I've seen some dingles barely bigger than a USB port, so size wise that should be possible. The other question is, how to tell the iPod how to pair? Sure, it could keep the antenna always-on, but there still needs to be some command to let it look for something to pair with. Maybe a small button on the hole where the plug used to be, that might work.
