I live just north of Louisville Ky and every year during Thunder over Louisville they have a great air show. We were actually lucky enough to have a Raptor doing it's maneuvers right over our neighborhood. It's impressive. The maneuverability is unbelievable.
I live 20mins from Nellis AFB so I love hearing the roar outside my house then popping my head out the backyard real quick to see one or two of them flying around. Never gets old!
The yf-23 was actually stealthier AND faster. The yf-22’s advantage was its thrust vectoring, and the stronger lobbying present by Lockheed’s bribed politicians.
Oh. Here we have another person apparently on the national defense panel making the decision. Watching UA-cam videos of claims of such things does not make you an expert. The stealth wasn't better, the cost was more even though the raptor ended up being way more expensive. The speed wasn't quite as high but the added speed was unnecessary as 1.8 super cruise was more than enough.
@@fishtailfuture He's not wrong though. Lockheed took advantage of a far better standing with the US Dept. of Defense and Congress, mainly due to production issues Northrop was having with regard to B-2 Spirit bombers. Congress felt Lockheed had a better chance at fulfilling production quotas and keep quality high. Strictly from a design perspective, the YF-22 was quite a bit faster, as well as stealthier, than the YF-22. The YF-22 was a more maneuverable aircraft, and concerns with Russia's focus on supermaneuverable thrust-vectoring capable aircraft, as well as AoA (Angle of Attack) experiments conducted with aircraft such as the F-15 ACTIVE, made that a bigger determiner rather than speed. In addition, being a fighter focused more on air superiority rather than the tactical fighter role (despite the program being called the Advanced Tactical Fighter), a tradeoff in stealth and speed was acceptable. Typical air combat engagements that proceed past AMRAAM BVR range slow down quickly to Mach 1.2, transonic, or even subsonic, quickly following the merge and if the YF-22 was lucky, into a two-circle rate-fight. Thus the additional speed was unnecessary. Ultimately though, the YF-23 was on paper a better fighter than the YF-22, so it came down to a political and financial decision.
@@sibidinakaran4757 The stealth capabilities of those fighters are classified. So unless you are committing treason by leaking top secret information, you don't know what you're talking about.
What makes the F22 so deadly is that it can see you without seeing you. It could detect you from 90 miles away and shoot you down and you would have no idea. However, you would never see the F22 because it's invisible on regular radar. And if you do manage to lock on, it will release "flares that will scramble your targeting system". Plus the thing can do summersaults in the air and that's cool too.
You probably will get no lock on radar, plus the f22 will know who you are before you do see him on radar, if you do..by then the f22 is shooting missile. What most people don't understand is the avionics on the f22.. the ability for the f22 to detect enemies without them knowing that a radar has lock on them, is priceless in war..
Exept on most of the fight between f22 and similar plane both plane get destroyed in 9/10 case. The oposing plane dont need to survive the fight, just live long enough until it send a missile on the f22...
That’s called 5th generation BVR (Beyond Visual Range) engagement, but 4th generation fighters can also do that and also be undetected, such as euro fighter, f18, etc. it’s performance in bvr compared to the F-22 though, isn’t anything much, the f-22 is unmatched.
90 miles is pretty far. Are u exaggerating? Guess not. The F-22 is equipped with multiple sensors including the AN/APG-77 radar, which is designed to detect and track enemy aircraft at long ranges. According to publicly available information, the AN/APG-77 radar is capable of detecting and tracking targets at ranges of over 125 miles (200 km) in optimal conditions. However, actual detection ranges can vary depending on factors such as the size and altitude of the target, the environment (such as weather conditions), and the capabilities of the radar system used by the adversary.
When I was a kid I thought the F 14 looked amazing and futuristic. I thought it was a modern fighter. The fact that this has a similar design is a testament to how timeless the F designs have been

“Several different onboard missiles” ???? What? It can only hold 2 AIM-9X/Ms, and a total of 6 AIM-120s for air to air, 8 missiles. For air to ground, it’s 4, 2 AIM 9s, 2 AIM-120s. Even with half scale it’s only 4 120s and 2 9s. This video is so poorly written.
The USAF and the USN are both working on 6th Generation fighters. They aren’t drone fighters yet but they are intended to have a small automated companion iirc
The reason they went with yF-22 was it had a working weapons bay, they yF-23 did not. The F-22 was simply better develop at the time and also more maneuverable.
@@dragoonTT Yes, and I will tell you something you wont here anywhere. I know because one of the guys on my time was hired to look into it. There was a design for a larger version of Yf-23 to be used as medium size stealth tactical bomber. And that was last I heard about it. But as far as a air-superiority fighter the Big Tail F-22 could out fly it without a doubt.
War Happens-com that’s really interesting. Just goes to show how cutthroat these bids are. From small-arms to multi role jet fighters it’s a crazy game of politics, money and hard work from the engineering teams.
They had more faith in Lockheed than Northrop. For it's purpose the Yf-23 was the better jet but the fall of the Soviet Union and declining defense budget they didn't want to risk Northrop going over budget on the project the Yf-23 was faster and Stealthie, but likely more expensive and a bit of a risk financially. F-22 and Lockheed were the safer pick and in hindsight looks like probably the right choice since the F-22 hasn't done much but be a deterrent.
Actually, the YF-23 was slightly stealthier and had a longer range than the YF-22. Missed opportunity. They picked the F-22 because it was more manuverable (as it dogfighting maters anymore with beyond visual range missiles), and the government trusted Lockheed more than McDonald-Douglas. If the Air Force could choose now between better manuverability vs better stealth and longer range, they would choose the stealth and range every time.
*Not McDonnel, but Northrop Grumman (Then Northrop Aviation). Although McDonnel partnered with Northrop on the YF-23 project, the government was dissatisfied with Northrop's B-2 Spirit cost and manufacturing problems.

Seeing this thing take off with the vector thrust is just amazing. Damn near vertical after short take off. Our Navy pilots couldn’t hang. The USAF pilots were handing ours L after L in A2A combat training. 😅
The yf-23 was actually fast and more stealthy. The f22 as only slightly more agile and politics had much to play why it was chosen. Yf- 23 was also to advance at its time more so than the 22. Its why we waited to make the yf-23 as our 6 gen fighter.

After the F22 program, I think the U.S. & many countries are focusing on integrating AI into fighter jets. The first approach can be using an AI co-pilot which can gather information from sensors and guide the pilot in combat missions. The second approach is a fully autonomous fighter jet controlled by AI. The second approach will be more lethal and has a high survival ratio compared with the first approach. With the advancements in AI and the computer chips manufacturing sector, we can soon see these fighter jets become a reality.
That's not happening any time soon. The USAF will not want pilots to die because an AI gave them instructions that were not actually optimal for the situation. 99% success rate won't be good enough.
Is it me or Lockhead seems to always win the contracts. Are they so good or do they give better bribes? Or as Americans call it "have better lobbyists"?
Could be both however the YF23 was better then the 22 in some aspects but they still chose the 22 so Id lean a bit more towards bribes for this occasion. Nonetheless, still a good aircraft.
They didn't win the Long range stand off, nor any bomber program, and who knows if they'll be selected for the Navy's next gen fighter. The company that makes the overall best product gets the contract.
Overall YF-23 was better, but YF-22 won because Lockheed had more experience, and they thought the YF-22 would be cheaper than it is. But YF-23 was better
From what I've read the YF-22 wasn't stealthier or faster than the YF-23, only slightly more maneuverable at certain airspeeds. One major difference was the Pentagon wasn't all that thrilled with Northrop after the cost overruns of the B2 and felt more comfortable with Lockheed. You also have to admit the YF-22 looks cooler, so the rule of cool may have played a part. The YF-23 had a longer range, but they never really showed off how well it could maneuver, while the YF-22 did. It can be argued that the YF-23 was the better aircraft, but the YF-22 won the competition.
They also had a working prototype that could fire weapons even though the trials didn't require it, while Northrop's proposed weapons bay caused concerns for releases getting jammed and making the aircraft incapable to release any more.
Remember. We are only hearing about a snippet of what this aircraft can actually do, simply because America 🇺🇸 already has their 6th generation ready to go. God bless America

However, there have been instances where F-22s have been forced to withdraw from combat due to technical problems or other factors, and there have also been instances where F-22s have been involved in non-combat accidents or incidents.
It's important to note that the exact details of military operations and incidents involving advanced aircraft like the F-22 are often classified, so it's possible that there have been incidents that have not been publicly disclosed.
No F-22’s have ever been lost as a result of combat damage. Some have been lost due to accidents or mechanical problems but not that many. A total of 187 were built and put into service initially. I’m not sure how many exactly have been damaged to the point of total loss but I know some have due to damage sustained in an accident/crash.

The F-22 was superior at dogfighting, that's why it was chosen.

Dam 90 miles that’s crazy

F-22 and Lockheed were the safer pick and in hindsight looks like probably the right choice since the F-22 hasn't done much but be a deterrent.
actually the f22 was malfunctioning repeatedly at the time.

I'm not sure if you're actually trying to say that Putin has shot down three F-35s (he hasn't. No one has shot down the F-35. To this day, the only manned stealth aircraft that has been lost through a shoot down has been a single F-117 in Serbia) or the lightning issue... which was fixed by toughening the module that was vulnerable to lightning strikes.
Either way, no. Putin has never shot down an F-35 and the F-35 would obliterate any Russian jet it came into contact with because Russian jets aren't good.
@@KaBar41 right well you best ask someone a lot smarter than yourself about Russian microwave , last one who argued with me was a US flight mechanic, I said go ask a pilot if there’s a memo “ if your lights go out and have no controls then eject “ . Yeah didn’t get back to me saying I was wrong when I said that info is above his pay grade . Guess he asked a pilot about the memo ha ha why you think that US hasn’t already rolled in Ukraine , because they get pounded back out ! When you write about conflicts then write something recent ! Like I did about the 3 f35 in Syria , yeah putin tested a lot of things in Syria . Google what Russia has to take on the f35 and f22 in tech with these planes as primary in the design as the main enemy . Just one brahmos would sink a carrier , you not seen the test where they slam the aft and come ripping out the bow ( length of the ship ) . Where’s wingman ? Out 2030 and half of hunters tech which is out 2024 . Go check them specs on wingman , it’s 💩ha ha . For the last 12 years all I’ve heard is yanks with this fx , it’s not even a model yet alone a prototype ha ha
Excellent video.
What a machine, we need to always have the edge in air superiority, the F22 is remarkable but the 35 is also a killer and I don't think they should've sold them so quickly, even countries that are part of NATO can change under circumstances, they'll always be war, people tend to be complacent, that can change in an instant. 🇺🇸
