I was 12 and saw a video where this pastor claimed a young girl in his congregation who recently converted died and went to hell for a few minutes (before her conversion). While she was there she saw Selena and she told her to tell people not to play any of her songs because it causes her pain. Of course I was a dumb scared kid (who was also religious at the time) so I refused to listen to any of Selena’s music for a while because I didn’t want to add to her suffering and it also made me feel guilty about my own decision to listen to an artist who wasn’t Christian like me. Of course now I realize that the pastor was lying out of his ass and using a combination of scare tactics, people’s sympathy, and people’s love for an artist (not to mention the attention it would get, using a big celebrity for this) to get more converts. This isn’t directly related to satanic panic but it’s in the same ~genre~ and I just got reminded of it lol.
Oh my god! I was literally just thinking about how when I was like ten my church had this conference thing two days before Halloween to talk about the dangers of celebrating the holiday and ways that they were indoctrinating us in schools to become gay criminals where they told us about this and then played an audio recording of what was supposed to be her screaming and being tortured and it went on for like five minutes.
I had literal nightmares for years about this stuff!
Also, on an unrelated note, my church was really big on the whole Halloween is evil thing. They even refused to hold the conference on Halloween and our parents wouldn’t send us to school because they were worried that satanists and witches would kidnap all of the kids to perform a ritual.
They also found a dead dove on the property and held a prayer vigil because they were convinced that a witch had attempted to curse our church.

i’m a pretty devote christian and one thing that confuses me is that the devil is never described as a little red man with horns anywhere in the bible. the only time we physically see the devil is as a serpent, but many christian’s believe that the serpent may have been symbolic and the devil game to the garden as a “ crafty spirit “. the devil is more commonly talked about as a spirit of lying, greed, rage and pain. most of the images we associate with the devil come from literature.
The idea comes from “lake of fire” the animalistic qualities comes from the animals unclean to eat in first testimony and pagan rituals
Should probably explain I’m an ordained universal minister before saying more lol. So there’s an outrageous amount of books that were submitted to be in the Bible that were rejected. Some removed later. Even the book of Enoch was ordered to be removed and denominations of Judaism refused, hence why it’s there. These books contain a whole lot of material that describes demons and even the ones that in many ways even worse than the devil if that’s conceivable. Worth looking into. I chose to study demonology bc I wanted to know the warning signs & solutions but I was in for so much more. Had no idea about the other devils

Except you clearly don’t understand what Christians believe to begin with…if you did you wouldn’t find it so fascinating but I digress. The Bible says if you don’t serve God the father by default you serve Satan the adversary and adversary is exactly what Satan means in Hebrew. So again if you don’t serve God you serve the adversary. Satan rules the lower functions of mankind, sex, flesh and even before his fall from heaven he was the angel of music which a lot of people even Christian’s don’t know. That’s why his symbolism is so prevalent in the music industry because they have to worship and give thanks to the one they serve. Even so the Bible says Satan is the god of this world while God the father is the God of heaven and all of creation. God is allowing Satan his time but his time is almost up that’s why the world is getting crazier and crazier everyday and this symbolism is more prevalent in todays media. What people don’t understand is Satan doesn’t care if you worship him, he just doesn’t want you to worship the true living God of the bible. Do you know what the serpent said to Eve? He told her that God told Adam and her not to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil because if they did their eyes will be opened and they will be as gods knowing good and evil. So Satan told them they will be their own gods, and look at the world now, is that not how most people think? Satanist claim they don’t actually worship Satan but they believe they are their own gods lol that’s exactly what worshipping Satan is so it’s funny when people are like “you don’t even know what Satanist’s believe your dumb!” Sureeee we are the dumb one but I digress 😂anyways so yeah if you don’t serve the God of the Bible you have the spirit of antichrist because you are against Christ it’s really THAT simple. I don’t think satanism has been edgy since the 80’s. By 1999, we were all cynical as hell. It’s weirder to do all this now, when it’s not really taboo or edgy or original. I really loved this video essay!!! I'm studying psychology, gonna do a presentation soon about how fear makes people discriminate against others. Has been some time I have felt sociaty is getting more controlled by fear and the discrimination is getting really bad and seeing this video has make me understand more about the situation. TAYLOR SWIFT, ARIANA GRANDE, ED SHEERAN, RIHANNA, NICKI MINAJ, KATY PERRY. it’s a long running joke with my sister, because he went on for 45 minutes, playing and analyzing LWYMMD talking about how taylor swift is the REINCARNATION of the satanic priests daughter (not clone, reincarnation, which is strange, because he’s a christian), and about how TAYLOR SWIFT LOVING CATS IS SATANIC BECAUSE CATS DONT GO TO HEAVEN AND THEY SYMBOLIZE SATANISM. a kid in the class was so terrified of the LWYMMD music video that he started CRYING, COVERING HIS EARS, and SHAKING because this man convinced him he would be possessed bc of taylor swift and her cats. As a massive Swiftie and victim of religious ab-se/ the original Satanic Panic, the Taylor thing is actually REALLY common. If anything, I think she’s viewed by many evangelicals as “worse/more powerful” than “overtly satanic” artists like Lil Nas X, Doja, etc because she’s considered to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The idea is that she’s luring the “good” ( read: conventionally attractive, blonde, white, country) little girls by presenting herself as ‘’one of them”. These people absolutely ran with the snake imagery for this exact reason. I actually find it super interesting (in a hate and makes me sick way) because I think it says so much about how satanic panic is tied to race and gender- most of the time these bigots just broadly consider anyone who’s not “like them” to be evil just as a default, and it’s treated as this very visible and overt thing. The “exclusivity” of being The Deceiver is reserved for those who *do* look and act like them, because there’s racist rankings even within defining evil. It’s the kind of thing that gets worse and worse the more you look at it.

great video!! I’m so glad you touched on the dangers of these insane ideas and how it’s more than just thinking a celebrity is worshiping satan.
This is so weird, for me especially, because I grew up Christian and still practice it (in my own way). BUT I am also in art school and would fancy myself an artist. The amount of times artists and creatives have been labeled "satanic" because they were different or weird or did something out of the social norm, is countless. It's honestly baffling seeing my friends and family (who are much more conservative and traditional than I am) genuinely see stuff like this online surrounding Doja and lil' Nas and Sam Smith and Lady Gaga, etc and truly believe it. Like? It seems so obvious to me that this is intentional and just a way to shock conservative mindsets and make them uncomfortable. As an artist, I can attest that being edgy and making people uncomfortable with my work and upsetting conservative mindsets IS SO MUCH FUN. I love seeing my grandparents look at my drawings of skeletons and stuff for school and think its weird. Its fun. And you're right that these music artists are smart for capitalizing on it, its free publicity and the people who freak out about it just make themselves look even dumber for not realizing that its just artists being edgy weirdos.
But, it really is concerning seeing how many young people my age (like I said, even my friends freak out about stuff like this) are falling into this conspiracy theorist mindset. My parents were metalheads in the 80s. So luckily they are experienced enough to recognize this is just a repeat of that time. But the kids who didn't live through it, or don't have parents that suffered from the first round of satanic panic, aren't as lucky or informed enough to navigate a repeat of history like this.
If you're still connected to Christianity you should know that this world is also spiritual. I was a very sceptical person before living and experiencing things that could not be explained at all.

i confess (ironically), that i had no idea about the rise of catholicism, especially in hollywood and new york rich places. i got a small taste of it on tiktok with the rise of the "catholic girl summer aesthetic" and it took me by surprise, heavily. i was raised roman catholic and when i talk about it with ppl not raised that way but like the look of it, they're disgusted by the rigidity and antiquated, nearly draconian ideas, heirarchy, and all around way of living. there is no room for joy and happiness in catholicism if it doesn't relate to god. can't wait to see them all cry when they attend an actual catholic mass or even a latin mass.
I'm really surprised to hear about this too, I was raised without religion (my parents seem to have ~some sort of~ faith but they never discuss it or adhere to any religious rules, so I honestly have no idea what's going on there), and the notion of young people being dead serious about fucking satanism and things like that is completely wild to me. none of my peers in my social circle are openly religious, and those who have religious beliefs are very chill, so... blows my mind. either it's largely due to my limited experience, or the situation is really as dire as it seems.
i grew up catholic too and had no idea it became an "aesthetic". i would like to see them actually try a catholic mass too, i guarantee it won't be fun lmao

one time i was talking to my brother (he's a Christian, but not republican) about satanic panic in the 80s, mainly about anti DnD stuff. He explained to me how some of the fear was rooted in the rules around Christianity, or at least his interpretation. He told me how in earlier editions of the game people had to speak the spells they were casting, idk if that's true but if it is, according to his faith that's spiritually unsafe. What's interesting about this is how satanic panic was taking somewhat real concerns about approaching this stuff as a Christian and turning it into fear mongering. Leaders in the church took the Christian people's worry and concern and decided to capitalize on it for social/economic power.

Doja really is trolling so hard. I don't know about satanic rituals and the like but this kind of stuff really does feel like elementary school level panic. Especially because back in fourth grade I remember we would like sit in a classroom and play this weird game called 'Charlie Charlie' with a pencil as we tried to summon his ghost and my friend told me it was a satanic thing and that Walt Disney was also satanic so my little 10 year old self would be panicking about Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and bloody mary. It was definitely a lot more paranoia in my life but I feel like we all got over that as the years passed.
All I will say about this topic is beware of what you are consuming. When I really started to listen to some of the lyrics of the music I was listening to I realized I don't appreciate the actual messages (to say the least). To each their own, just be sure what you're consuming is what feels good for your soul. Stay safe out there 💛
