When I got my first job at a pizza place, at first I was really excited about being able to learn the process of making pizza and every pizza I made was really fun. But after experiencing dinner rush after dinner rush, it became hell. The section on editing reminded me of that. When you learn something new, it can be tolerable, even fun, but having to do it over and over again for hours at a time, day after day, makes it get SO old, so fast.

omg the same for me with my first subway job! once i got used to it, i enjoyed it a bit which was a little surprising since i got hired for rush hour, but getting into a rhythm made it enjoyable. that enjoyment was sucked out the second i started getting scheduled for night shifts tho lol

Having your own schedule is the best privilege I can think of. I'm going on a spontaneous road trip tomorrow, didn't have to ask anyone. I'll just work a little harder next week to make up for it.

This is the most self aware, nuanced commentary I’ve seen an influencer/content creator make about this topic. The way I see people talking about it online usually at best makes me roll my eyes and at worst feels like a slap in the face as a viewer.
To be fair, I think for me personally (and probably a lot of other viewers/consumers of content) is that I’m straight up just kind of bitter about the money. I’m broke as fuck, and finding a job as a person with mental illness has been an absolute nightmare even with the privilege of a college degree. And i think the more unstable my life gets the more I’m finding it hard to relate to creators that I actually really love.
But like.. that’s a reflection of me and not the influencer. Im just broke and bitter and should stop watching people who make me feel bad about myself lol. And this is probably the same for a lot of other people who give influencer’s shit.

Every time influencers say they're super busy I do get so irritated. I'm in high school, and I have 2 part time/casual jobs. I work in childcare in the school holidays and through the term I work in a restaurant.
I totally understand how difficult filming youtube, taking IG photos, working with brands, creating relationships with other creators is but it's annoying to hear as a "normal person" getting minimum wage.
Like on social media I'll hear "i have so much to do today" and it's getting their nails done and doing their own laundry and cooking and some vlogging which seriously upsets the average person.
I absoutely love how genuinely down to earth nicole is in this video about her own life + work whereas other content creators complain.

  • @annamariyad
    @annamariyad Рік тому +164

What rubs people off is that being an influences is your own choice. If you don’t like it you can quit in a min and get a ‘normal’ job with bosses etc. But the other way around is not possible! So why complain by comparising if it’s a personal choice?

I think it was just the way she said it that sounded out of touch with reality, like the whole i just ended work at 5p.m thing 😂. Considering how much she flaunts her expensive bags, jewelry and new million dollar home and the big make-up collabs she sells, complaining about that is a bit too much for me. I admit it does make me bitter, because i am a med student, working 12-24 hour shifts in cardiology clinic in the mids of still going to uni, taking exams and attending extracurricular activities for credits that i need for graduating the semester and i barely get paid a living wage, it just makes me mad how people are just so in their head sometimes.

I think influencers try to “prove” that they work hard because a lot of the discourse around influencers (at least that I’ve seen) is about how we literally don’t do ANYTHING, and then when we get defensive about that, we get dragged 😭 but I completely agree with everything you said in this video (p.s. your apartment is so beautiful it just always looks good in the background good work)

Influencers and content creators need to STOP publicly telling the internet what they are "writing off" because it can and will be used against you if you get audited. There's strict established rules on what can or can't be, and anything you gain "personal enjoyment or use" (like your apartment) isn't on the ok list. I say this as a tax CPA who filed for billionaires. You won't be thrown in jail but you are eroding your own defense for when they send a notice.

I think there's also a more complicated question with kids being made into internet stars, or part of their parent's influencer brands, which is not just the violations of labor laws that are absolutely happening, but also what constitutes "labor" in those environments? When your whole life becomes "content" the lines between what is work and what is not are super unclear, which I imagine is even worse for those kids who are in that situation.

As someone who started my own business and worked for myself full time at 20 (after many shitty jobs) and now I am just not financially or physicially able to sustain it anymore, I totally agree that everyone should work for themselves if they can. However I think it’s so crucial that you make sure you have a consistent clientele or whatever the equivalent may be, lots of savings, and the motivation/willpower to succeed. It’s hard to admit you don’t, but personally I jumped in way too fast, and while I don’t necessarily regret it, I know there are things I could’ve done that would have made it a possibility to hold out that career longer. While it may be frustrating, its way easier to wait until you’re really ready to make the move to work for yourself full time than to do it too quickly and end up quitting and going back to working for a company 😅

This is an over all great video! If I had to say one thing, it would be that from what I’ve seen, when influencers say “I’m always at work” it is not because they’re always working, it’s because they are always at their place of work and thus their brain never leaves that place. They always feel like they could/should be doing more. because they don’t have set hours, it is hard to create boundaries around their work life and their relaxation time.

I recently quit my job as it was making me more mentally ill, luckily I have college to fall back on, but damn if I didn’t have college I don’t know what I would do.
Society is literally built on capitalism now, its engrained in our brains to make money which means no matter what the job is as long as we are getting paid good then you can’t complain. But I’m at my rope with that idea, I’m ready to have a job that the positives outweigh the negatives.

I used to work jobs where I clocked in and clocked out, now I do the same amount of hours but it's more project based so I can do it at any time. I 100% get the mentality of the whole wanting to say you work 24/7 thing, bc if you have not even poor time management skills, but even average management skills, project work spreads throughout your entire week. It's insanely hard to motivate yourself to have five sessions of 8 hours of work. In that way, it is harder, bc it's pulling at a skill that you don't develop until prob a couple years of the job. That being said, it is unfair to act like you do double shifts because you work throughout the day. Independent time management is hard, but it's not the same as overtime.

this is so off topic but i had to spit it out because i think you would love to hear it
i’m an Iranian girl who is diagnosed with ocd and anxiety, and i’m still studying at highschool.
we’re getting through so mant stressful days these times and if you’re not aware, our government is killing our people due to the protests of “women, life, freedom”. we’re trying to make a revolution and everything is a mess here and it’s hard to find a comfort zone especially on the internet cause our platform is filled with overwhelming news of people in MY AGE (im 16) dying because of their personal choices.
and i find your channel so comforting to the pount where i binge watch your videos to keep my sanity and distract myself from everything. i find your content very interesting and entertaining and i also like you as a person. you’ve had such a huge impact on me and my mental health and i owe a part of my happiness to you and i just wanted to say thank you for taking your time and doing your best job at being a full-time youtuber. you’re saving some people out there🤍 stay safe xoxo

i wish quiet quitting was a thing when i was younger. i worked a full time job at a retirement home while in college where i was severely underpaid and overworked. they took advantage of my youth and my not knowing my rights. they literally had me clean up after a resident took his life in the facility. me at 17 cleaning that shit up. and of course there were no resources for the aftermath of having to see/deal with that.

Commenting as a content creator with a full-time office job, I think about this a lot because from both perspectives, both my jobs have their negatives and, yet, I can't complain about either of them. I've had teenage jobs but nowadays to my parents, who work working class jobs, my office job where I can work from home most of the week is a luxury they don't have. Yet I wish I could be a full time creator because I want *more* flexibility, to work fully remote while travelling, etc. We're never happy with what we have 😅😭

Nicole never disappoints me but I still had to force myself to watch the video because the entitlement most influencers (specially americans) have makes my head ache but this was a lovely surprise.

Lol we're never dropping the pantry chicken here! I work in market research for corporate reputation and these influencer scandals are EXACTLY the types of scenarios companies spend a lot of money with us and PR agencies to prevent or recover from.
