I got the 2019 Buick Encore after viewing Alex’s video. Alex is spot on that the if you mash the non luxury and luxury compact SUV vehicles, the Encore will be larger in seating and cargo room and better valued in the included accessories for a bargain price. I was surprised when I visited the dealer that the Honda HRV won’t give me Apple CarPlay until I go to the higher trim level at $27k. I got Apple CarPlay even in the lowest trim in the Encore for thousands less than the Honda HRV. Also the HRV roofline is very low that I hit my head on the roofline trying to get in and out. Great review Alex!
@@rentedduckliing If you're asking me what about now -- it did have a repair recently I wasn't fond of. The car is babied and yet it generated some sort of leak. A result of a poorly designed turbo engine. It revs too much. I had it fixed but I sense in time it will return.
I just bought an almost new 2018 Buick Encore with full manufacturer warranty, front-wheel drive, the most basic trim. The drive-out price was 17400 dollars. Even though it's small, it has a decent amount of space inside. It won't win any races, but it has enough pep to accelerate when you need it. I feel it was a great deal for a very decent vehicle.
I think you nailed what Buick provides here. If you are looking for a subcompact SUV that offers some premium touches, but you are not shopping the luxury market, then the Buick is a good option to consider. I leased one for two years and found lots to like from the premium interior to the Bose engine noise cancellation and the extremely affordable lease deal, the Encore was a winner for me.
Just got the fully loaded AWD 2017 Buick Encore, and I absolutely adore it!!!!! I wanted an SUV since I’ve always driven a sedan and the size of this is perfect for someone who wants a lil more room but nothing crazy!!! FYI, I am 5 foot 2 and 140 lbs. Overall such a fun car to drive!!!!! Great video
Picking up my 2017 Buick Encore Premium AWD today. Very excited. First time buying a GM car in decades; after driving Fords. Thanks to Alex for helping me make my decision.
John Donabie does it get up and go??! how is gas mileage?? know this sounds stupid but does it have a good console(actually bought a car that didn't have a console) and are there plenty of cupholders? is the engine quite? do you hear outside noise a lot?
And they’re definitely following through! The technology in these is tried and true globally with other GM vehicles, and is probably one of the better options in the segment. We have no issues with our HR-V, but we would genuinely consider adding this to our fleet, or replacing our HR-V with one, when the time comes!
The Buick Encore sounds just right for me!!! It is a sub compact crossover, I like compact cars but all of the best ones are manufactured in foreign countries. I want to support American industry so I wanted an American car. Then I remembered how much I loved my old Buick Regal, man did that car age well, she was almost 20 years old when we retired her. Nowadays I like a little room in my car and the subcompact SUV crossovers look mighty fine to me and the Encore is right up my alley price wise as well as luxury wise.
Hi Dianna, I have the 2016 Encore Sport touring and love it. Bear in mind that this car is assembled in Korea. German designed, Korean made and mostly Korean parts.
Dianna Levine Miller , I own a 2015 Encore and I love it! It's super cute, roomy, sporty and luxurious to me. I'm a music lover so I should've paid a little extra for better speakers. Otherwise, I would recommend❤❤❤
Just like the last person who commented, I also own a 2015 Encore, and interestingly enough, the Encore was actually based on a European car by another GM company called Opel. In some places in Europe, it’s sold as the Opel Mokka and in the United Kingdom, it’s sold as the Vauxhall Mokka. Me owning the American version, I like the Encore. It’s not the only car from Buick that is also sold in Europe as a Opel or a Vauxhall. The Regal is sold in Europe as the Opel Insignia and Vauxhall Insignia.
I just bought my 2019 earlier this month and I’m loving it so far. If you like the feel of a compact car but like to sit higher then u will enjoy the encore. It’s a very smooth, comfortable ride, which I’ve noticed with every Buick I’ve driven.
Looks a lot more mature over last years exterior styling! It also has more of a mature and somewhat aggressive look to it as well! I am also glad that the port holes are gone on the hood, they were definitely getting long in the tooth and beginning to look a little tacky. The interior is, also worlds better than the previous generation, too! Interior space isn't too bad for the class either.... Even though there are some larger entries. At least Buick is taking strides towards making the vehicle more practical for the average consumer/user of the vehicle. The Buick Encore is definitely going to appeal to a certain market, but seems to be a pretty decent entry in the Sub-compact Utility Vehicle Segment! I cannot wait until I can review one of these recently redesigned Encore's. They might actually fair pretty well in my test! Keep up the great work, Alex! You are such a concise, yet easy to understand, and entertaining reviewer! -DriveAndBeDriven "The Quest To Record The Best!"
Alex is unbiased and honest. I test drove the Honda HRV that all the other reviewers rave about. I was surprised because the roofline is very low, the 4 cylinder non-turbo engine is slow on acceleration, the interior looks very subcompact segment, and NO Apple CarPlay in the base trim $23k. You have go all the way to $28k trim to get Apple CarPlay. Buick Encore’s interior is very modern and classy with a huge bright 8 inch infotainment screen, handles almost as well as my BMW X3, and it has a high roofline - getting in and out is easier and a huge cargo area with the seats folded down. The Mazda CX-3 is just a hatchback which is way too small. The Subaru cross trek is so small, it is laughable. Alex is correct - The Buick Encore is a very good compact SUV.
Another great review Alex, you didn't mention the ground clearance though. That's something I'd be interested in knowing. This car wasn't on my radar but this fine review put it there, thanks Alex.
My husband and I bought a Buick Encore, Sport Touring, several weeks ago. We are in our 60's, and I - the wife - am the driver. I really like this car, EXCEPT FOR two things: 1) the rear tinted windows. I cannot do a blind spot check with this. I was thinking about using blind spot mirrors but now am thinking about removing the tinting from the windows. Any advice? 2) There is no CD Player! Seriously, Buick, what were you thinking? I mean, really, what is the median age of Buick Encore drivers? I see many drivers of this car that are in their senior years. And they are used to using CD players. Not cool Buick, not cool.
I think the Buick Encore will end up being a cult classic in the car world. Love the interior. I do wish Buick would follow Honda and Toyota's lead and make all safety equipment standard on all models. Also, I bet a 7-speed or 8-speed transmission would absolutely sing with this little turbocharged plant.
I’ve always been Honda and Toyota. Just picked one up for the wife yesterday. Very impressed with build quality. Traded in a 2018 Yaris. The New Yaris is garbage. 20k km and the thing is rattling like mad.
I always thought Buick was out of my price point but with discounts it's actually cheaper than many other similar cars. Also, the interior just seems like it has more class and status IMHO
I love the interior and exterior styling of my 2016 Encore, but I was curious about the 2017 updates. I know many disagree but I HATE the new styling! It makes the 2017 look so basic and blend in with the rest of the subcompact crossovers on the road. So I'm glad I got my 2016 before all the changes were made!
I just traded in my 2014 Encore for a 2017. Guess you could call it my encore Encore. =) I love the updates except 2. 1. I hate The way they have the front USB ports, almost impossible to get to. 2. I miss the Ambient lighting along the dashboard. Other than that I Love it.

They've made some great improvements, I'm impressed with the 7.7 sec 0-60 time.. however Alex, you may have wanted to note in your review that this 2017 model is a FWD with the more powerful engine vs. your last review which was an AWD Sport touring(same motor). It posted about a second slower to sixty and I'd be mostly willing to blame the AWD system and weight.
Why do reviewers never show how far down the rear windows go in a car? Is it because none of them will go all of the way down? It's an important feature for back seat passengers to be able to roll the window all of the way down. My dog wants it, too!
Any chance of doing a review of a german brand? I know you did one Golf, but its about the only one. This year there are plenty of new facelifts deserving one of your great reviews.
Yay, no more tacky, non functional ventiports. First good styling thing buick has done in a long while. Now, to get rid of them from all other buick models. Good job, alex. Best in the on line reviewing biz, imo.
Always thought this CUV really did not compete with any other in the segment - more high end than mainstream crossovers, but not quite a luxury vehicle against the German/high end competition (and not priced against it). Alex's description of it seems spot on, especially with the modern direct-injection engine. Does it work for a family of four on long trips? Anyone know?
I am really interested in making this our next car. BUT there doesn't seem to be much storage. There is a CD player but no place to store CDs. If you put them in the glove compartment where do you keep the manual? Where do you keep the kleenex box? Where do I put my purse?
I was looking at 2016 Encores and they were getting snapped up right and left; ended up with a 2016 Chevy Trax LTZ. I could not tell much in the way of difference to the Encore in quietness or ride quality.
does it get up and go??! how is gas mileage?? know this sounds stupid but does it have a good console(actually bought a car that didn't have a console) and are there plenty of cupholders? is the engine quite? do you hear outside noise a lot?

You keep objecting to scores while completely ignoring a fundamental aspect of those scores - they're all rated against other vehicles *in their class*. All comparisons to the 5 series are irrelevant, since it's not a subcompact crossover, so your objection is baseless. The 2017 X1 has lower official US fuel economy ratings than the 2017 Encore, so a comparison would prove what, exactly ?
+Arnis Tarassu If you bothered to check, the _official_ fuel economy ratings for the 2017 Encore are 30 mpg (base engine) and 28 mpg (high output), while the 2017 X1 ratings are 26 mpg (2wd) and 25 mpg (4wd). Do the math. The official figures are 28mpg for the model reviewed, while Alex got 27-29 mpg driving it for a week, so what's the point of your question, exactly ? Your objections are *still* unfounded....
I don’t know if you’re still in the market for a vehicle, but it’s definitely worth mention that nobody pays sticker for Buick vehicles; dealers highly incentivize them and will offer extremely competitive rates on their vehicles and accessories, so you will realistically find these being sold at similar prices to the HR-V and CX-3 instead of more premium offerings (like the X1, GLA, UX, Countryman, etc.) like the original sticker price would suggest. Great bang for your buck with this model - definitely a recommended buy!
Although the subcompact SUV's do offer the advantage of a higher driving position, the Fit truly represents what engineers can do when they set their mind on maximizing interior room. The Fit is an excellent car.
I like them because getting in and out of a higher vehicle is easier on my knees, I'm tall, kids grown... don't need a ton of room. I want a little comfort too.
DID YOU KNOW THAT ENYA GOT MARRIED???? YES YES ITS TRUE, ENYA WED !! OH WAIT, NEVER MINE I WAS READING DEWAYNE IN THE MIRROR, CARRY ON FOLKS, NOTHING TO SEE HERE....
Bernard Odom Oh, idk, the Chevrolet Volt and Bolt? Did you forget about those? Not to mention that almost all Cadillac's will have hybrid variants in the near future.
Sat in a Fit. Drivers seat. Very roomy. Encore does look very small from the outside. Looks like $ 20,000 subcompact, with the $ 5,000 SUV tax added. Apple tax, SUV tax, Crossover tax. All the same. Adding 25% to true value.
Encore is larger overall than a Fit, offers more capability with optional AWD and higher ride height, comes with a more powerful engine and traditional automatic (aiding in more competent and usable performance) without sacrificing efficiency, as well as more advanced technology, better standard equipment, and a more refined and well-mannered driving experience. Nobody pays sticker for Buick vehicles either, as dealers highly incentivize them. You’ll find that real world pricing for these is much more in-line with the HR-V and CX-3 than other premium and luxury offerings. Definitely one of the best in the segment, and definitely a far more compelling buy than vehicles like the Fit and Yaris.
Alex sold me my 2015 Encore. And my first American car. This review really spells it out perfectly. We've had no regrets or repairs with our Encore.
American 'branded' car, it was made in S Korea.
i would think that bc it's taller that the handling or driving dynamics would suffer but I'm surprised alex didn't dock them for it so ... GREAT!

Add a bigger turbo, catback, CAI, Mishimoto Intercooler if they make for them, and headers and this will be one of the ultimate sleepers.

Hi Alex. Could you please do a review on 2017 Chevrolet Trax facelift and a comparison between Trax and the rest of the competition? Many thanks.
Any idea why the Chevy trailblazer didn't get this power train?
No passenger arm rest... I just don't get it.
It's because it's a cheap vaxhaull/koel rebranded as a buick
Not wide enough
Always thought this CUV really did not compete with any other in the segment - more high end than mainstream crossovers, but not quite a luxury vehicle against the German/high end competition (and not priced against it). Alex's description of it seems spot on, especially with the modern direct-injection engine. Does it work for a family of four on long trips? Anyone know?

Almost perfect, sluggish low end.
Can you get the more poweful engin the the trax?
A for fuel efficiency? 8l/100km? WHAT? 2001 BMW 5-series with automatic and straight-6 consumes a little less than that.
Ok lets take BMW X1. Anyway 5 series is heavier, bigger.
The X1's fuel economy in the USA for 2017 is lower than the Encore.
Economy on paper or like the way you got 27-29 on Encore?
+Arnis Tarassu If you bothered to check, the _official_ fuel economy ratings for the 2017 Encore are 30 mpg (base engine) and 28 mpg (high output), while the 2017 X1 ratings are 26 mpg (2wd) and 25 mpg (4wd).
Do the math.
The official figures are 28mpg for the model reviewed, while Alex got 27-29 mpg driving it for a week, so what's the point of your question, exactly ?
Your objections are *still* unfounded....
The Encore is made in Korea.
I like it but its too small for the price :(
I don’t know if you’re still in the market for a vehicle, but it’s definitely worth mention that nobody pays sticker for Buick vehicles; dealers highly incentivize them and will offer extremely competitive rates on their vehicles and accessories, so you will realistically find these being sold at similar prices to the HR-V and CX-3 instead of more premium offerings (like the X1, GLA, UX, Countryman, etc.) like the original sticker price would suggest.
Great bang for your buck with this model - definitely a recommended buy!
where does the CrossTrek fit ?
the looks are 11: 12 with chevy trax
First, hopefully not the last
honestly those compact crossover are not any bigger inside than a honda fit.
Kai Liu yeah my Honda fit is awesome...mpg is better too!!!
i've tried, it's smaller. even hr-v (called vezel here)'s inside space is smaller than fit, back seat lower less head space.
Xander M wow good to know.
It's kinda potato-ish, but I like it
I amn 6'2.............. long legs................... is this ok for me ?
I bought this car, thought I heard the gentleman doing the review say, The dash was playlether,it’s not real leather
The more powerful moter probable has direct injection
what about recalls
Dewayne WHAT ABOUT THEM?
DID YOU KNOW THAT ENYA GOT MARRIED???? YES YES ITS TRUE, ENYA WED !! OH WAIT, NEVER MINE I WAS READING DEWAYNE IN THE MIRROR, CARRY ON FOLKS, NOTHING TO SEE HERE....
What happened to the hybrid tech GM promised ? corporate amnesia ?
Bernard Odom Oh, idk, the Chevrolet Volt and Bolt? Did you forget about those? Not to mention that almost all Cadillac's will have hybrid variants in the near future.
Put an LS1 in there bruh
Christopher Robbins YAAAAA BRUHHHHHH....LIIIIIIKE DUHHHHHHH..... I MEAN ...WHAT THE FUHHHHHHHH BRUHHHHH
Can you turn off the Start/Stop engine functions?
Unfortunately, no you cannot.
Not bad a car, but spending almost 30k on subcompact, meh..
Front design looks like a MDX
