Prove Me Wrong!! BEST Method for applying Gold or Silver Spun Leaf from LiME LiNE

  • Hey everyone, in this custom paint tutorial I will show you how I apply LiME LiNE Leafing. Understand that not all leaf spins the same. Some brands will actually dull out the silver or gold leaf when spinning (engine turn). I have tested dozens of different leaf manufacturers to make sure that LiME LiNE has the best and most brilliant spin. When applying the LiME LiNE sizing glue be sured to apply light and even on a clean smooth surface preferably sanded clearcoat. Overcoating with glue will cause unnecessary film build and will create a texture that will affect the final look. Remember spray light and keep the surface smooth. *NOTE YOU CAN GLUE AND LEAF TWO LAYERS OF LEAF BEFORE UNMASKING IF YOU ARE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH TEAR THROUGH WHEN SPINNING. THIS WILL ALLOW THE BOTTOM LAYER OF LEAF TO HIDE THE TOP LAYER TARE THROUGHS IF THEY HAPPEN. Be sure to press down all of your gold or silver leaf edges if you do not plan to pinstripe the edges. Do not tape directly to silver or gold leaf! Use the LiME LiNE leafing roller to ensure good contact between the sizing glue and the leafing. Burnishing the leaf will help push in those edges and gives the silver or gold leaf a uniform look for a brilliant looking spin. Unmask before spinning so you can repair any edges. This also will prevent your turning pad from wearing out prematurely. When engine turning (spun leaf) keep a 30-40% overlap. Burnish the leaf with the LiME LiNE brush tool one more time and your ready for clearcoat. I hope this helps you all. Ha! I made one of these using a round wooden knob with a 1”flat spot on it and a Dremmel tool felt pad. I made it in the 80’s while doing all the gold on 40 plus San Francisco style (motorized) Cable Cars. I still have it and after coffee, my size should be ready to gild some hand carved letters. BEST WAY TO BURNISH/ENGINE TURN FOSHO!!!

I'm going to start on my 5 gallon conversion tank for my 2018 Street Bob this weekend. Can't wait to try out the Lime Line leaf, spinner, size, flake and tape I purchased. My goal is to do something similar to the tank you just did in color scheme, but do a couple light coats of black candy on top and adding just a bit of holographic flake to the metal flake.

I havent done gold leaf yet but if you have a circle template that has the 1/4 marks you could make lines on your lime spinner tool that are at the 1/2 marks so the center dot of your spin is in the exact center every time instead of being closer to the sides.. thanks for the help though i enjoyed learning

It’s good leaf. I have the Lime Line Gold and Silver and they are both worth it. I bought random Etsy/Amazon stuff and it doesn’t spin. I have real gold and silver too but it is more fragile. I don’t really use the spray glue because I haven’t had enough practice with it. I use Dux size and wait the 45 minutes lol. Even with Dux the Lime Line leaf still spins well. I am still new to spinning leaf but I am happy with the leafing products I got from Lime Line.

Hello, the viscosity is too thick to use with an airbrush, so what should I dilute it with? water? Thinner? alcohol?

I love this channel and have learned a ton from you. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with us. I ordered the limeline sizing glue (and the roller & brush too) after watching your videos. I am really struggling with it. I think that they forgot to put the magic in the bottle that I got. 😁 I tried to follow your directions and that on the label. 2-3 coats with around 5 minutes flash time between coats and it always seems to be too dry before I can get the leaf dropped into place, which leaves it terrible looking. I am doing something wrong, but I don't know what. I was having a little better luck with the oil based sizing, but I wanted to give this a shot just to try it. Any insight as far as what I could be doing wrong? Thanks again for your time.

Get yourself some velvet fabric, wrap it around a cotton ball or similar soft material (insulation from a coat if cotton balls can’t be sourced, maybe even bird down?) and rubber band or tape it to the end of your wooden dowel or stick. That’s how engine turning (spinning leaf) has been done at least the last 100+ years. All they’re using here is a piece of machined aluminum bar stock with a bit of Velcro (hook and loop tape) with a pre cut disc of 3m Trizact, 5000 grit sanding/polishing foam. You can also experiment with other fabrics you can source locally. Search gold leaf or Gilders engine turning tool for inspiration. It doesn’t take much to make a turning tool. Best of luck.
