    Have you upgraded Stradic? You can upgrade the bearing under the spool on the spool shaft by removing the bushing and adding a ball bearing. You can also upgrade the drag washers by also removing the felt stock washers and added carbon fiber drag washers on your Stradic also you can upgrade the handle to get more spin by removing the plastic white bushing on bottom of the handle shaft handle with a ball bearing ? Just a tip if you haven't

    Thanks for the tips. I was looking for a three or 4 piece rod for travel. I have a Miata MX5 or a Motorcycle/Goldwing. It's a problem putting 10' two piece surf/salmon rods. After red tails.

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  7 років тому +1

      Yes it is. a 7' travel rod would be OK I think. I surf fished with a 6'6" bass rod for about a year and did OK. I just like the 10 footer because it gets me more distance.

  • @marcg.9899

    Great info! I also think 20-30 lb braid is sufficient. I may try mono as a leader because of the stretch. Currently use flouro because it continues the sensitivity aspect I like. But I may need a slight give for the jacks and redfish here on the east coast of Fl.
    With no disrespect anyone who uses other reels but I will always stick with Shimano. With stability of the x-ship, hagane gear strength, core protect etc. I'll sacrifice a little less line for the quality and longevity, it just isn't comparable.

    Is there any need for a longer cast surf rod? Are we fishing for anything further out worth the effort? It's surfperch or jetty fishing..Have you any luck 100-200 yards out?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  7 років тому +3

      Longer than 10'? IMO, no it's not necessary. These surf perch are near shore, many times they bite between where I cast to and where I stand. I just like to cast it out as far as I can because it let's me cover more water.

      Generally a rod that's long is also really Butch so you lose sensitivity.

    hey pk i was just going through the new Washington fishing regs. and omg im going to have to hire a lawyer to interpret them , 135 pgs. its crazy the more you read the more the more confusing it is. it used to be so simple , any way is the Oregon rules like that ? i grew up in Oregon and it was simple how much has it changed the min size for a trout here is 14 in lmao and you can keep 2 . i wish i could take this fishing licence back lol

  • @Rick97266
    @Rick97266 7 років тому +1

    I have a few questions for you. You mentioned that these fish can be a bit line shy. I'm currently using chameleon colored leader. do you think that would be one of the reasons i'm not catching anything? I've caught one fish in several trips, and had a very few bites. I've watched the videos and tried to use the knowledge of where/when to fish (based on sandbars, outlets, troughs, etc), and I feel like I'm fishing the right areas, but am having a hard time hooking up.
    I also noted that the tournament on the 4th, while fun to be getting wet lines, was not heavy with fish at the end of the day. Is it maybe a weather issue? Could you address what the best weather to fish for this specific fish is, as you know it? I went out on a perfectly sunny day and got not even a sideways glance. Is it maybe just a season issue? Maybe the fish are not as active when it's warmer? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the seeming drought of surf perch.
    Thanks for your extremely helpful videos and perspective! I enjoy learning from you and hope to someday bump into you in the surf!

    Hi PK. I've been really enjoying your videos and excited to start fishing for Red Tails! Thank you so much for your great videos. You are a great resource for us newbies!
    I just inherited a never used Shimano Sedona 2500 FB spinning reel. Will this reel work for Surf Perch? If not, can you recommend an inexpensive reel? I'm on a tight budget.

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  6 років тому +1

      Yes, the Sedona 2500 is a good reel for surf fishing. I would put 15# braid line on it. I used a Sienna 2500 for surf fishing before too and it works great. Very important thing is you need to clean it well after each trip from saltwater. Spray it with a garden hose after each surf fishing trip. Maintenance is key to keeping your reel working for years to come. Good luck.

      Hey thanks for the quick reply/advice! Can you recommend a rod other than the Cabela model no longer available? (Inexpensive). And lastly, have you fished Arch Cape?

    • @cgmejia
      @cgmejia 6 років тому

      I was about to buy 20# Kast King thru Amazon since they no longer carry the Spectra. It's reviewed highly and the price seems reasonable. However Amazon isn't selling it in 15#. Will the 20# be too thick to fit the minimum length I should be using? What is the minimum length for Surf fishing?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  6 років тому

      20# isn't too thick. But I recommended the 15# because you can fit more line on the 2500 reel over the 20#.

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  6 років тому

      The Cabela's Whuppin stick is also decent for the price. It's about ........ can't remember, $20 ish? I got one and it works fine for surf fishing. I got a new Ugly Stik 8'6" salmon rod that I will be using soon. I'll do a review on that rod in a couple of days. I was also looking at the Okuma Celilo salmon rod. They are lighter and go up only to about 3/4 oz weight, but I plan to pick one up for surf fishing. I think they are about ..... $50 ish? It's a good price for that rod.

    Hey Pk i bought the Cabellas 9ft version of your rod. But my problem is that my penn pursuit 5000 dont fit. Have you ever encountered this problem with penn reels or on your rod.

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  7 років тому +1

      Yes, I've had that issue before. Some Penn reels have a larger reel foot than, say, a Shimano. I have a size 14000 surf reel by Shimano that fits fine into all of my rods. My 8000 Baitrunner also fits into all of my rods. I have a 7500 Penn Spinfisher V that has a larger reel foot that won't fit most of my rods. This is just some differences between the 2 manufacturers.

      NASCI if youre going for small game ( its lightweight and made from plastic) the daiwa bg if you want more heavys. ( its heavier and more metal and lots of drag in the bigger reels).
      nasci has better waterproofing and is probably made to better standards ( just my opinion)
