I own 5 rods and reels. they range from $30 from Walmart and $700 carbon fiber 12ft beach rod. I've caught more with my $30 set than any other. Fish have no idea what our gears cost but our wife do. keep your wife and your bank happy. fishing is enexpensive sport/hobby. for me when it comes to fishing, understanding and good reading for waves and choice of lines comes first. fun always happens.
for me fishing is cheap walmart or fishing store salt water rod 25 for the reel 45 rod hooks line leaders 15 bucks u set for a while there that was 2 years fishing once week
Dude I have two of those reels. I have had them since 2007. They are tougher than you know. I am on the east coast and I can land Blues and Stripped Bass with them. You did a great Job and I am backing your word all the way.
Jeff from Jersey / Yep. Jeff I just went to the Basspro fishing classic to take advantage of some older reels with they're trade in program. They offered nothing that I would jump on so I took it back LOL.
Troy- I'm in NYC (Bklyn), I haven't gone fishing in years and never went surf fishing but would love to try it. After reading your confirmation I might just try this rod, where did you get yours and what reel do you use? My budget is invisible so I'm scouring UA-cam to see what others use! :)
New sub here. I love it when people aren't flaunting their Lamiglas semi-custom with a 300 dollar reel. You go out and CATCH FISH and use a whopping 35 dollar setup to do it. Props and keep on catching. Will be seeing you soon.
I was catching the same fish with my $25 rod and reel as my $250 r@r but I can cast much further the rod is much lighter also my drag isn't sticky and my reel is smooth to reel in also if I ever get something big I can get it in.
Nothing wrong using inexpensive equipment. Nice Perching action! Just a note 10lb Braid is my go to all around inshore line. Thin diameter. Casts far. I've caught large jacks to bonefish using it. I do use my 9'9" rod so that's my "shock absorber" besides the reel as braid has no give.
Great video! I've caught a 7ft shark, stingrays, medium to large snappers, gurnards etc with my fx2500fb. I have it on a 6ft Jarvis Walker rod with 30lb braid. Simply my favorite fishing rod... outperforms all my other PENN, Daiwa and Shimano stuff! Its really not the size of the ship as they say...and I think its simply the best pound for pound striker in the biz!
So it's okay to use 20 or 30lb braid on this reel even though the packaging says 10lb? Forgive me - I'm a newbie to surf fishing and just bought this setup to test out as a beginner. Just need to know what line to get!
Thats a good question.... I would like to know the answer to that. I would think the heavier line would be to strenuous on the internals inside the reel.
nice! i love it when ppl catch nice fish with cheap setups lol I myself use a 7ft okuma tundra rod with an old penn 5000 reel from the 1990s. Im still pulling up 8-10lb fish off a cliff no problem !
I have both the medium and medium heavy of the Whuppin Stick. I use it for Catfish in the summer and just recently, started using it for stripe bass. I find the medium too whippy, almost like a pool noodle. However, it does register the bite really well and yes, I caught fish with them. I use a Dr. Fish 5000 baitfeeder reel with 10lb Kastking Fluorokote on the graphite spool. I have yet to install braid on the metal spool but afraid to for fear that braid will cut through the rod guide inserts. Does far, because it's a fiberglass rod, it registers the bite delayed allowing me to react for a great hookset. Great video. Waves look scary but looks fun.
GOOD Job, reel-em-in. I just picked up 8ft Ugly Stick with the same reel you have there, I hope to make it Surf Fishing soon as I can make it to the coast. Hope to see ya fishing.
I like your videos. You make surf fishing look easy and the way you present it. I am going to try shorter rods and smaller reels. We use 4.5 m poles and at least 6000 sized reels for 2-3 meter surfs and longer casting distances.
I got the Whuppin Stick 9' and returned it. I am very sure it's only good for surf fishing on the West Coast for Perch about that size. Slow action and very light power which makes it fun but too much work.....LOL
On your surf tournaments you can use a app we use in michigan for musky tournaments. That allow to fish out of multi areas and compete in same tournament. Called ( I angler tournament) thanks for the great videos
Great channel. I want to try surf fishing. Please talk about the terminal gear. Is that a 1.5 oz. jig with a gulp sand worm? What hook size? What leader size? Thank you.
Great video specially showing you don't need to have the fancy stuff to Cath fish. Question thinking of going surf fishing I live in Florida. How can I help to not drop my reel in the sand. And if it does how do I clean it. Thank you again for making this video
hi PK,need opinion from u,im new to light surf fishing and im from south east asia..is 7ft 8-17lbs line rod is suitable?im pairing it with Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL,Daiwa Crossfire 3000 spinning reel and Shimano Curado i201HG..pls enlighten me and some explaination..tq,pk
PK Yi any fish that can gulp my sandworm and hard lure, but shoreline in my place is pretty calm blue water with coral..seabass,barra,giant travelly..im from Malaysia
Oh, so the big boys! Never fished for those so I can't say honestly. But, the rod might be a little light for barramundi or trevally, I imagine - maybe something in the MH to Heavy would be more suitable. For reel, maybe a 4000 size or 5000 might be better?
I wonder if a 10ft Uncle Buck's deluxe Crappie pole spooled with 6lbs test line can handle it. I already caught a large bass/catfish/snakehead on it. It is somewhat whippy and flimsy looking though😎😁
Lovin your fishing channel. I have the same Shimano Reel paired with a Exceler Medium Fast rod, and I used it as one of my main rods last year for most freshwater fishing. Works great, it was actually what I thought of as my first good reel I bought. As you get more into the hobby, the upgrades and cost increases are endless.
braid, I assume. I recommend the Spectra brand on amazon. they are half the price of powerpro or spiderwire and works the same. it's super strong, I use it to tie my wife up all the time. www.amazon.com/Generic-Spectra-Dyneema-Fishing-328Yards/dp/B00PDCY3TE/ref=sr_1_6?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1479604388&sr=1-6&keywords=braid+line
I was looking at the ugly stick elite, but this rod alot cheaper, I heard they are tough, I fish mainly lakes, rivers, ponds, so I think 7MH would be perfect, I had a berkley Cherry wood HD, it snapped on a fish, the fish was to big for the rod though.
It depends on how far you can cast, taking into account you need spare line for when you loose some on a cast. Best to have a 10ft rod with a 4000 reel imo. But fishing is a very subjective issue, everyone has their own answer :)
Why would you want a 2500 unless you are just fishing for tiny fish close to shore with any weed or current you will need atleast 4000 and the bigger the reel the further it will cast because there should be less friction when the line comes out.
Well I bought a 4500 it has 25 lb of drag and im still thinking it's the minimum for sure, if a decent size shark, sting rays gets it I have no chance but I can manage decent fish.
It might not balance great but a 2500 can probably spool a good 200+ yards of 15 lb braid, and thats pretty much enough to land anything. Max drag is almost a nonfactor if youre using 15 lb braid since you wont be setting drag over 8 lbs. Of course you could argue that the rod is overpowered in this case...
The recreational fishery for surfperch (family Embiotocidae) is open year-round. Bring a small cooler with ice. During the winter months, it's already cold outside so I just leave them in a bucket with no ice. Just cover the bucket or the seagulls will go after them.
Maurice Brown I had some left over braid I used, but for powerpro they are between $15 to $40, maybe a lot more depending on size and length. spectra is what I mainly use which are about $12 for a 300 yard spool.
Hi, may I ask We don’t have Cabela’s here, and getting the rod from the internet is expensive cuz shipping cost. I was searching at my local Walmart and Kmart and they have the Shimano FXS 90MHB2 do you guys think is going to work as the Cabela’s Whuppin Stik? Thanks in advance.
I had the same problem and I got 25 lb braid but it really depends on if you need the extra strength if you don't go for the same lb test or a little bit more.
Never had any issues with line twist. When you toss it out into the surf, its gonna twist in one direction, then twist in the opposite direction, and it's gonna repeat that many times - it usually just just twist in one direction 100% of the time. Wave action is so random that the net twist isn't much of a concern. Kinda like flipping a coin 1000 times and it's going to be very close to 50 heads & 50 tails.
I was going to put together a beginner surf/pier fishing combo using this rod. i had an 8'0 and a 9'0 in my hand, looking at both of them. Then a Cabelas employee asked me what I wanted to do with them. I'm thinking exactly what PK is doing here. He started saying the rod didnt have enough backbone, what if I hooked into some huge fish, I wouldnt have enough rod to do the job. I'm like, come on, I am going to use this thing maybe once a year. He then showed me some heavy ass long saltwater rod that was about $100. I was like, "No thanks, a little too much for my budget". He then showed me some more rods and combos. I finally told him, "Ok I get the message". So I think I will just use my 6'6" Ugly Stick combo from Wal Mart.
Got to order the Cabelas rods from Cabelas online. They are pretty good rods for surf fishing, Another good perch rod is Ugly Stick 9.6 Salmon/steelhead GX2 its 35 bucks at WalMart.

I use casting rods and reels. Have spinning setups for my old lady and friends but always seems more pleasurable landing fish on casting gear!
Thanks for showing people you don't need to mortgage your home to have a blast fishing! NICE JOB!
Yeah tell him to show u before he broke it in rod it’s a piece of shit rod first time fishing nightmare

Well it IS a Shimano,, even their CHEAP stuff is pretty good, especially for a Beginner its a good move.
Jeff from Jersey / Yep. Jeff I just went to the Basspro fishing classic to take advantage of some older reels with they're trade in program. They offered nothing that I would jump on so I took it back LOL.
I'm planning to buy that reel about 23$ (1150 peso)good and durable reel like everyone Say
Thanks, I'm just getting into surf fishing so this looks like a fantastic setup.

Great idea showing people you can catch surf perch without breaking the bank! Higher end rods and reels are nice, but not necessary to catch fish.
Half Watt when I go for perch, I use my $30 dollar trout rod and dig for sand crabs.
Half Watt q 13#3#? Lopoiuytee

I bought the Whuppin Stick, watched a bunch of your videos, mimicked what you do and kicked ass after a 40 year break from surf fishing. Thanks dude.
Congrats on your new setup. Good luck in future outings.
I have four off those shimano reels, got them on sale from fisherman store for $11,and they works for me great for five years now. Nice video PK.

Great videos! I love how you always say "righ there"
I live in california now, just moved from oregon love it there. so beautiful
I seen that fx on sale for 15 dollas, i like the old IX to, I'm gunna use this combo.

Nice Pk! Thanks for the great Rod& reel info, that dryer sand worn was amazing!! 👍😊👍
Good technique of drying it out. You can always put some scent before cast
I like your videos. You make surf fishing look easy and the way you present it. I am going to try shorter rods and smaller reels. We use 4.5 m poles and at least 6000 sized reels for 2-3 meter surfs and longer casting distances.
Using a smaller setup can give you a big advantage if you don't hold the rod the whole time with the big setup and do with the small one.
Flimsy rod is good when using braid. Something has to give a little when setting the hook and when a fish surges. Braid has zero stretch.
Awesome vid man, learned quite a bit!
Such rich waters . Amazing fishing . Wish this was UK !
P. S.
Thanks for the tip on the gulp sand worms and drying them out. That is very smart.
I got the Whuppin Stick 9' and returned it. I am very sure it's only good for surf fishing on the West Coast for Perch about that size. Slow action and very light power which makes it fun but too much work.....LOL
hi mate on your surf rig setup try a Burley Spring with some pilchard squashed in side
love your videos. Always inspiring , keep them coming.
thank you.

Get a rod holder. There's no excuse for dropping a reel in the sand. I never have.
Used the same reel for years great cheap real
went today n picked me up a whuppin stick too!!...good shit bro!
nice. they are good rods for the price.
hey pk yi. when is the best time to go for red tail perch. early morning? 12noon or when? what is the size limit and bag limit per person?
hi PK,need opinion from u,im new to light surf fishing and im from south east asia..is 7ft 8-17lbs line rod is suitable?im pairing it with Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL,Daiwa Crossfire 3000 spinning reel and Shimano Curado i201HG..pls enlighten me and some explaination..tq,pk

hey bro....i just subscribed to your channel...from philippines here.
i like your videos so much...very nice and informative. ..keep it up!!!
I wonder if a 10ft Uncle Buck's deluxe Crappie pole spooled with 6lbs test line can handle it. I already caught a large bass/catfish/snakehead on it. It is somewhat whippy and flimsy looking though😎😁
It can handle the fish but if there is any weed of current you will break off alot.

Works great, it was actually what I thought of as my first good reel I bought. As you get more into the hobby, the upgrades and cost increases are endless.
That's a nice setup. Fishing is one of those hobbies that can get crazy expensive. It's like having 12 fishing rods already isn't enough, I need more!
The thing is a one shot experiance. How is it a few months later.
Where are you placing the sinker and what kind?
great vid PK! you need to bring the cheapo setup when you come back to CA for stripers. question: what inexpensive line do you recommend?
braid, I assume. I recommend the Spectra brand on amazon. they are half the price of powerpro or spiderwire and works the same. it's super strong, I use it to tie my wife up all the time.

PK Yi lmao! dang guess you'll need more than a casting glove for that. thanks for the link.
I just did a spit take reading this comment
I was looking at the ugly stick elite, but this rod alot cheaper, I heard they are tough, I fish mainly lakes, rivers, ponds, so I think 7MH would be perfect, I had a berkley Cherry wood HD, it snapped on a fish, the fish was to big for the rod though.
Looking for one piece option.
What kind of boots do you wear? Where is this?
Captainpegs07 cabela's spring run waders (boot in)
Is there any tide pool to fish near Newport
Do you have any mono or Fluorocarbon for a leader or braid straight to the hook?
I was wondering the same... what lb test for the leader.
in Malaysia bought only RM60 thats mean UDS14.13 .... and Indonesia Rupiah iD205949.82 for Shimano FX4000
What's the best size reel for surf fishing? 2500 or 4000?
It depends on how far you can cast, taking into account you need spare line for when you loose some on a cast. Best to have a 10ft rod with a 4000 reel imo. But fishing is a very subjective issue, everyone has their own answer :)

Would the 2500 be good for a '9 rod? I've been doing some research and most people recommend 4000 minimum for surf fishing. Love the videos BTW!
It appears he's got a solid setup
Well I bought a 4500 it has 25 lb of drag and im still thinking it's the minimum for sure, if a decent size shark, sting rays gets it I have no chance but I can manage decent fish.

Do you have any suggestion for surf fishing in San Francisco by area ., I am going to try Bodega bay shore lines tomorrow
I've never surf fished in SF, so I really can't say. But I went to San Cruz once and did good catching redtails.
Where are you fishing in this vid?
craig g the ocean
+craig g Never ask a fisherman where his spot is brotha..
What oz weight do you use for that rod?
I’m going to try this in seaside in a few months. How do you keep them fresh while you fish the rest of the day ?
Bring a small cooler with ice. During the winter months, it's already cold outside so I just leave them in a bucket with no ice. Just cover the bucket or the seagulls will go after them.
PK thank you
I am going to get one looks good
What fish were those? What's the meat like? I fish freshwater and they resemble large bream.
Frank Norman they are redtail surf perch
Some perch have this mushy flesh, others arnt, deepfry would be good
How would a 2 Oz lure snap a 10lbs braid?
Shimano FX is the best cheap reel.. no problem to landing 12kg river fish.
What rig did you use
nice perc where is this at
good video, apprently the fish didnt know you're using saltiga or stella... :-)
could you catch blue fish on this setup ?
How much was the braid ??
Maurice Brown I had some left over braid I used, but for powerpro they are between $15 to $40, maybe a lot more depending on size and length. spectra is what I mainly use which are about $12 for a 300 yard spool.
medium heavy on the rod???
BankFISHINGguy it's actually a Medium
Hi, may I ask We don’t have Cabela’s here, and getting the rod from the internet is expensive cuz shipping cost.
I was searching at my local Walmart and Kmart and they have the Shimano FXS 90MHB2 do you guys think is going to work as the Cabela’s Whuppin Stik? Thanks in advance.
Yes, that is a great rod, and a good price too. Good luck.
What lb test line is that?
hi, got any idea what braid size would suit if i wanna switch from a 0.32mm nylon? thnks
I had the same problem and I got 25 lb braid but it really depends on if you need the extra strength if you don't go for the same lb test or a little bit more.
Hi PK have you ever fish at Agate beach in Newport before? It is behind Walmart.
+Dinh Chieu Nguyen I've fished at Nye beach , which is south of Agate. Did ok there.
I have that rod in the 10" med will that cast 2 oz , 1 oz is not holding bottom and the wind is blowing my casts sideways
MrStoneyone it should cast a 2 oz fine
thank you I may just try 2, 1 oz to start with I have a ton of them and no 2 oz
Ya only 4 fish poor guy you gonna starve.. not! great vids!
How do you keep the twist out of the braid line
What is the size of the sinker that you are using with this setup?
I use a 2 oz DISC sinker
abu garcia rods and reels reasonable prices and good quality
I live in Cali and they don't have any stores with the rod
Got to order the Cabelas rods from Cabelas online. They are pretty good rods for surf fishing, Another good perch rod is Ugly Stick 9.6 Salmon/steelhead GX2 its 35 bucks at WalMart.
preston dao i second the 9.5' ugly stik GX2, sensitive and indestructible.
The fish don't know how much you spend !
did you go weightless? or did you add weight?
Marc Barbosa 2 oz weight
About the drag, what's ? 4, 5, 6 Kg ?
About 6# on the 2500 I think
Man o wish I could go and fish with you
Sand worm jerky for the fish lol
Are these real sand worms or the soft plastics ones??
Plastic
Thanks. Can I get trevallies on these? Nice channel btw.
I've never fished for trevallies but read about them. I'd probably want some lure a lot bigger than these sandworms - although they do make a 6" one.
They are very hard fighters. Even the small ones are a good thrill. Thanks for the tips.
I was unable to find out rod I don't think they sell it anymore.

Cool videos
what hook are you using?
Eagle Claw baitholder #2
Is the fx2500 better then the 4000?
they are the same model, just different size. the FX2500 should be fine for trout, bass. the FX4000 should work well for, say, salmon.
What kind of fish are they?
William Lee redtail surf perch
Nice fish
Could it handle small snook
Caught a 40lb blue cat on one they're nearly indestructible
Hey man I’m hunter Dana from Kalispell mt I’m gonna be in Oregon till the 12th if you wanna meet up and do some surf perch fishing that would be sweet my place is in Newport get back to me
Oops. I think you missed my announcement that I moved to Stockton. I'll be in Oregon on July 27 for a surf fishing tournament though
What do you think is the best way to catch the surf perch rn I’ve been using red sand worms but it’s not going very great I need something different ?
line LB?
Linggi Master 10lbs braid
Will they work even on 20-40 LB fish and. (4000)
the max drag on the 4000 size is about 13#, I'd probably get a reel with a little more drag power if you're going for fish those size.
i think you could catch fish with a broomstick, more skill than gear haha
$30-40 for the braid
Arthur Wilson so....?.... find cheaper line maybe?
No, I run 30 power pro on mine just making a comment on line costs too
Fish don't know the difference between cheap and expensive rods and reels...
dude oryt
The braid cost more than the reel and rod🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Its Porgy time
Nothing cheap about that setup. Fish cant tell the difference between cheap and expensive. Its all about how you fish.
