Good day from down under mate. Thanks for sharing with us your fun and exciting session fishing with Gulp and rooster tail baits or lures. I enjoyed watching keep them coming.
I caught my first ocean fish(red tail perch) at yachats state park... I had a 6’6” trout setup and a 1/4 oz panther Martin with the same paint as that rooster and I did great!!
The whole point of a rooster tail type of inline spinner lure is the blade. With the way you had your rig set up it looked like the blade wouldn't get in the way.
I fish in San Diego beaches and the Berkley 2 inch sand worms on a Carolina rig on 6 lb. line works great. Max 2 hooks. You don't need a license if you're fishing from a pier and check for the limits on certain species. Most are 10 a day.
Why don't u throw it with the spinner blade on with nothing else on the line? Won't it catch something with the flash n vibration of the blade spinning??
I could try that next time, but I don't think it will be able to cast very far with a 1/8 or 1/6 oz rooster tail. the flash I can see, but the blade vibration would be negligible given the huge waves constantly pounding on the beach that would easily cancel out the small vibration caused by the blades.
...you're pretty great bro. I like your videos. I live in Eugene half time and Philomath half time. I love to fish - grew up fishing, mostly in Colorado then Alabama and Georgia. Used to live down in Coos Bay but didn't get to go much. My truck is having problems, so my friend is taking me to the coast next week-end. I cannot wait. I;m not sure if I'm gonna go the Alsea and then Waldport or up to Newport. If you ever have room for a fishing buddy, I'd love to join. Keep up the good work!
@@oregonlife I've been watching your videos at work all day..lol, so I said screw it, went home for lunch, got my gear, just set it up for a double and I'm headed to Chanel Islands after work..thanks for the motivation!
@@oregonlife Got skunked yesterday but I was able to let the waves wash away the office stress so it was worth it! Getting my new steal head rod and reel today then hitting it again at gray light tomorrow.
I will try to set my camera on a pole next time to show people. But usually, I just wing it out as far as I could. I don't aim at any particular spot, but just try to get it out as far as I could. This way it lets me cover more water. Then I just do a slow retrieve, then pause about 5 seconds. Rinse & repeat.
I'll give you my tip on roosters. Hold down the hackels with the three fingers of your left hand and trim off the feathers even with the trebel hooks. Short biteing no more. You could of used the next smaller size in the set up you used. Maybe without cutting hooks off. With spinner attached I see the advantage if a larger size is used. But always trim thoes hackles off even with the trebles. Hope to see you soon Bro.
Use bigger hooks and you will not lose fish. This is tried and true with redtails. I use big old salmon hooks and the perch have no problem hooking on it. Even tiny ones. Rarely lose a fish on the big hooks.
PK.. Congrats on an awesome day of fishing!! After watching this several times I'm gonna try this setup here in So. Cal. You don't show it but I wonder if you gill bleed all these fish before returning home?? Also wonder.. surf fish here often have parasites inside. Is that true up there??
Hi! I'm enjoying your videos alot!! I went last week friday to seaside then north to astoria with my dad and fished by the peter iredale but never got nothing. I thought i felt one but might've been the tide. It's my first time perch fishing anyhow...I'm not giving up. question about your setup..do you have a weight somewhere on your line and then to how many feet is everything setup? like space between each hook
I go about 12-18 inches between each hook. the weight is at the bottom and is about 2 feet from the last/bottom hook. I use a #2 hook and a mono leader of 20# test. never give up, and have fun out there.
Bill Maguire my thinking at the time was that the blade might made the lure too big for them to swallow seeing they have a small mouth. but nonetheless it worked fine here add you can see in the video. now I keep the blade on.
Went into Bass Pro Shop today in Tacoma WA, Was interested in doing some surf fishing on the Washington coast, the guys there told me to look up your Pk Yi on UA-cam, I ended up buying all the gear and ready to go to Ocean Shores WA For the weekend. Enjoying your videos. John from Seattle WA.
so how did you do John? I live in Graham. We're big on the Crappie.Gonna take the boys out some time this year.May go to Copalis or close by. Surf perch are looking pretty tasty.
This is by far one of my favorite surf perch fishing videos. Really like how you modified the hi/low rig with a lure as your weight (if I was seeing that correctly). Do you have to fight the urge to reel in quicker or does the resistance that the lure gives allow you to reel in slower and still have the lure be effective? I'm casting a lot heavier than you (my rod isn't rated below 1oz) but I'm thinking about trying your approach with a heavier 1oz on the end and see how that works. Great video regardless!
I leave it out for a little bit when the lure lands. the tide, current will drag your lure around the surf and the perch will take it pretty quickly. you cover a lot more water/ground if you leave it out a little bit and let the natural current, wave move your bait/lure. and when I do reel in, I reel in slowly, then pause, rinse, repeat
I haven't done any surf fishing before. It looks like you are fishing parallel to the surf rather than perpendicular to it. Does this allow you to fish a certain depth and stay shallower than if you cast straight out? Thanks for the videos. I've enjoyed many of them.
Hey I really like and have learned a lot from you videos. I'm gearing up to surf fish, which I've never done . But you've really got My interest up. I'm going to fish off the Wa coast, which I'm assuming is also good for. Catching the Red Tail Perch. I've never use the Rooster tail much, but after watching this I'm going to Wal- Mart and purchase some. I am curious what rod you are using ? I order a 10 ft medium heavy on line from Shakespeare, as I have a limited budget. I like what they sent, but as I like to use lite gear, I feel it's a little heavier than I like. Keep up the great videos. Thank for all your great tips too. Don.
Thank you. Redtail is good all along the Wa. coast, from the videos I've seen. I highly recommend gulp sandworms as they one of the best bait. I use a 10' salmon/steelhead rod. I've also used a 6'6" and a 7'6" with excellent success. Just pick one that you are comfortable with and go for it. Tight lines!
+PK Yi : I do have a Salmon/ Steelhead 9ft, which cast 2/3 or 2/5 oz fine, but I'm a little Leary of using a 2oz it may limit my casting length ? Thanks for responding. I hope you will do some Steelhead fishing videos ! I live on the Olympic Peninsula which has mucho rivers to fish for Steelhead in !
Yea, I wouldn't use a weight much heavier than what your rod is rated for. I use a 2oz for my 10 footer because that's what it's rated for. Once in a while, I use a 3 oz, but not often. Feels like the rod would snap each time I cast a 3 oz. I've been meaning for some steelhead fishing, but not sure where to go.
PK Yi; just question,, what is the right water temperature i can go fishing, specialy here in dubai summer tym the water reach 35 degrees , haven fish on that surf fishing???
Is there a reason you picked that specific rooster tail? or do you think most would work? Do you plan on trying different ones in the future to see what works best, although it doesn't look like it gets too much better than the one you used.
That's kind of why I figured you use that one. I was just curious because I have a lot of them that the trout just don't seem to like. I only use the tinsel brown trout rooster tail. They love that one. So I have plenty I can experiment with. I'll let you know which ones work. Of course I'll do the surf leader with camo worms so I don't get skunked. Probably won't get out there till spring though.
I am going surf fishing this weekend and hope to have a day like the one shown in this video! When you cast the bait out, do you let it sit there or do you reel it in slowly?
barview is a great place to surf fish. I've gone there many times and had good success. for most beaches, I toss it as far as I can. farther is better because you cover more water. the plastics I use are plastic worms called gulp sandworms. best color is camo and 2" size. there is no minimum length for surf perch in oregon. you're allowed 15. good luck.
So I see that your rod is rated 1/2-2oz, so it would seem what you're throwing is too light for that rod... and yet you do a great job (and land fish to boot!). How does it actually feel to cast though, especially with how windy it gets along the coast? Do you feel you need to add weight elsewhere on the line-- aside from the grubs ?
the 10' cabela's salmon rod that I use is magic. I love it so much I got one more as backup, and planning to get another as a backup to my backup. you can never have enough backups. it casts a mile and is very light and sensitive.
Hi PK, once again nice video! Questions, are you using a weight? Or is it just your usual rig setup with the rooster tail tied on the bottom in place of the weight? Thanks.
+PK Yi Sorry, one more question. Do you still tie the weight 2 feet from the rooster tail? I've seen your other video about your surf fishing rig setup where you had a foot above the first hook, 18 inches between 1st and 2nd hook, 2 feet down is the weight. Is it similar setup with the rooster tail? 18 inches between all hooks? Thanks again.
Hi. Do you tie a weight on as well? I've seen one of your other videos where you put two gulp sand worms on two loops and had a round 2oz weight at the terminal.
PK I have discovered that using big hooks is the way to go. I hear pe0ple say that they have small mouths, but they take a big salmon hook with no problem, even the small perch. And I will tell you that I out fish everyone on the beach with the big hooks. I almost never miss a hit and I do not lose fish. Try it, you will see.
the point of the blade is to spin and flash to attract the fish and it does not matter how big there mouth is that's what the treble hook it for u probably lost all those fish u did because u clipped the hook
for tillamook, I fished barview jetty and do ok a while back. not sure about now. for seaside/gearhart, any beach in those places are good. you just gotta get out there and cast your line in any flat beach and you will mostly find them
Enjoy your vids. Every once in a while we all have "brain farts", this is yours. It must be some sort of jig but it's not a spinner. If your thinking is correct, how are surf perch ever caught on "Lucky Craft flash minnows" as the perch can't swallow them? Tight Lines!
Yakima Bait Co. make these rooster tailsThey have tons of different style lures. I also use a little Cleo by Acme the cast really well and tend to attract anything that swims.
I live in Southern California do you think this method will work are beaches are more deeper on the shore not spread out like you'res but think doing so I can get a surf perch?
Chad Richardson there is surf fishing in California. I am pretty sure there are more species available as well. You would have to research your specific area.
Everything hits roster tails, kinda like castmasters not much that won't take them. I'm going to have to get some lead, SS wire and some blades, and make some heavy surf size for bull reds and gator trout/blues.
PK Yi hey yes thanks for replying so quickly, yea I went to cabela's Web page but they only seem to have one 8 footer and two 9 footers but no 10' any more ?? Idk mabey they discontinued the 10 footer for some reason , anyway thanks again for the quick reply and the great videos .
How excited you get brought me so much joy. Nice day out fishing bro
You got me my first surf perch! Thanks pk!

What a great day of fishing! Love your enthusiasm. Thanks for the tips and look forward to more vids..
thank you
@oregonlife I think you would of been safe with the 3rd hook on it
The whole point of a rooster tail type of inline spinner lure is the blade. With the way you had your rig set up it looked like the blade wouldn't get in the way.
Wow, no kidding.....Roostertail Surf Perch! Look forward to meeting you and fishing with you Friday morning PK!
MTF!
Good job, that is a great sized redtail.
Cool vid, never used a lure like that in the surf, but you showed RT works just fine!
Damn PK you're killing it with that rig on the surf! Good stuff man
I fish in San Diego beaches and the Berkley 2 inch sand worms on a Carolina rig on 6 lb. line works great. Max 2 hooks. You don't need a license if you're fishing from a pier and check for the limits on certain species. Most are 10 a day.
Wow! I can get em shallow eh? Nice haul!
great idea as usual....keep them coming
Great work. will try your method for sure thanks for the video!!
Nice job with rooster!! Dam I gotta get to coast for fish and chips. Love videos keep it up!
Those we're some good sizes, nice job. I think its good to switch it up
variety is the spice of life, and catches more fish.
PK Yi so true
Damn man I'm really Gona go try that out. Keep them videos coming
Really a good video and wonderful fishes lovely effort thanks for the amazing video ......
Awesome catch. Thanks for sharing your video.
thanks for watching. tight lines
Why don't u throw it with the spinner blade on with nothing else on the line? Won't it catch something with the flash n vibration of the blade spinning??

Interesting experiment. I wonder if a bucktail with scent would do.
that sounds promising.

I'm going to try that set up this Sunday.
Nice. Hope you slay 'em.

thanks I just got a cabella 10' whooper stick and don't know how far I can cast with a 1 oz sinker
That should go pretty far. I use 20# braid on my surf reel and get good distance.
I have 30lb braid
dang bro they hit rooster tail in the surf too
I'll give you my tip on roosters. Hold down the hackels with the three fingers of your left hand and trim off the feathers even with the trebel hooks. Short biteing no more. Thanks for the tip. I will try that out next time.
Awesome video
Seems like perch will hit a lot of different lures. The trick is to find them. Looks like youre fishing the rip.
Also I save money by using sand fleas. The fish's natural food-- they hit the fleas hard every time.
Great job
I'm looking go go fishing either at Lincoln city or around that area this Friday? And help or suggestions before I head out? Thanks!
Man you are double surf perch machine.
I put big roster tail on with spiner one fly hook dressed on the top everything hits it split shot in the middle
The blade is what makes the lure good
Use bigger hooks and you will not lose fish. This is tried and true with redtails. I use big old salmon hooks and the perch have no problem hooking on it. Even tiny ones. Rarely lose a fish on the big hooks.
Those are huge barred surf perch.
Good deal buddy catch them all
so do you just cast as far as you can? or is there a sweet spot your looking for in the waves?
Awesome!! Good job pk
thanks. tight lines!

when i fish for those i use a Carolina rig and a big sand crab (sand flee)

would work similar to a buck tail.
Buck tail jigs are a lot cheaper

What do you feel for ..to know when it's time to set the hook...or can you see the fish or what..I'm new to fishing .sorry for the dumb questions..😐
the bite is a rapid tap, it's hard to miss because many times they pull hard suddenly

Allan Davis. Its real easy i trow my bait over the wave so the fish can c it easier lots of fun!!!
Wow good I like fishing
That beach looks familiar...
Nice work. I am so motivated to do some surf fishing. Is there any weight on your line?
do you hv to cast far out and do you use any sorta of weights . another exciting video..great actions
Nah. They are in super shallow water many times! No need to throw it further than 100 feet or so depending on conditions.

Nice catch . so you were using the rooster tail for a casting eight as well ????? what lb is you main line and what lb is your leader??////
main: 40# braid. leader: 20# mono.
Is there a reason you picked that specific rooster tail? or do you think most would work? Do you plan on trying different ones in the future to see what works best, although it doesn't look like it gets too much better than the one you used.
color worked well in the past for trout fishing. it's also similar to the 2" camo sandworms that I normally use.

cool. good luck out there. you can catch these guys year round by the way.
Where you fishing at brother???
Hey PK, what size hook do you recommend for those sand worms and what kind of weight? 2oz pyramid? Thanks! I'm a noob
I use a #4 hook & a 2 oz weight
Get the Berkeley gulp sand worms. Nothing better!
I am going surf fishing this weekend and hope to have a day like the one shown in this video! When you cast the bait out, do you let it sit there or do you reel it in slowly?
I only let it sit for a very brief time and slowly reel in
bet the rooster tail attracts them from a distance and then they hit the first bait they get to
yea, for sure. they give off a lot of flash so they come from afar.
PK... how far do you cast? also best time to fish? I want to go to barview and fish....oh, hubby asked minimum length? and are your worms plastic?
barview is a great place to surf fish. I've gone there many times and had good success. for most beaches, I toss it as far as I can. farther is better because you cover more water. the plastics I use are plastic worms called gulp sandworms. best color is camo and 2" size.
there is no minimum length for surf perch in oregon. you're allowed 15. good luck.
+PK Yi thank you so much!
oh, best time to fish, usually incoming tide up to high slack tide and about 1-2 hour after high slack.
+PK Yi perfect!!
I’ve been going out by the south jetty in Florence and have had no luck, any advice on where to go?
That rod is it medhevy
So I see that your rod is rated 1/2-2oz, so it would seem what you're throwing is too light for that rod... and yet you do a great job (and land fish to boot!). How does it actually feel to cast though, especially with how windy it gets along the coast? Do you feel you need to add weight elsewhere on the line-- aside from the grubs ?
the 10' cabela's salmon rod that I use is magic. I love it so much I got one more as backup, and planning to get another as a backup to my backup. you can never have enough backups. it casts a mile and is very light and sensitive.
It certainly is popular! It wouldn't surprise me one bit if your videos are the reason that is the only model that's on backorder haha
Hi PK, once again nice video! Questions, are you using a weight? Or is it just your usual rig setup with the rooster tail tied on the bottom in place of the weight? Thanks.
I use a 2 oz weight 100% of the time
+PK Yi Ok. Thanks for the quick reply!
+Q Lee np, I like answering questions. the distance between the hooks vary between 12-18". and I put the weight at least 2' from the bottom hook.
+PK Yi Thanks again for the quick response! I appreciate all the information that you've given. Tight lines 😊
Hi. Do you tie a weight on as well? I've seen one of your other videos where you put two gulp sand worms on two loops and had a round 2oz weight at the terminal.

for tillamook, I fished barview jetty and do ok a while back. not sure about now. for seaside/gearhart, any beach in those places are good. you just gotta get out there and cast your line in any flat beach and you will mostly find them
Go to Cape Lookout State Park Beach. Very good fishing there.
awesome man
Have you test rooster tail in other configurations? By self or two at a time with one higher up?
Enjoy your vids. Every once in a while we all have "brain farts", this is yours. It must be some sort of jig but it's not a spinner. If your thinking is correct, how are surf perch ever caught on "Lucky Craft flash minnows" as the perch can't swallow them? Tight Lines!
Hi bro u give nice ideas for us
Where u from
i am curious why.. you removed the blade..
i get that it really is not going to spin right.. does it impede the hook?
when is the best time to fish for that type of fish in Oregon and what type of license do you need? please let me know.... thanks
They are year round, any month is good. you only need a fishing license
Is there a limit of fish I can get? And thank you so much for your videos it made me want to go back to fishing👍😉hope to so many more!!!!
15 surf perch in Oregon
HEY PK MATE, THAT ROOSTER TAIL IS THAT CALLED A BOBBER
Yakima Bait Co. make these rooster tailsThey have tons of different style lures. I also use a little Cleo by Acme the cast really well and tend to attract anything that swims.
Thanks mate
Are you casting parallel to the beach?
No, I cast far out and the waves bring it back in, so I just let it go where ever the wave action takes it.
What beach? You use any weights on that rif? Size rooster tail?
do you know were a good spot is in Florence Oregon to do this
I've heard that haceta beach is a good spot for perch. good luck
what wader size you wearing i wanna get one. im 5"1 small size good for me or x small you think.
it depends on your body size. for the cabela's waders, there is STOUT and REGULAR, then you have to choose your shoe size.
I live in Southern California do you think this method will work are beaches are more deeper on the shore not spread out like you'res but think doing so I can get a surf perch?
Chad Richardson it should work, a rooster tail lure isn't specific to any one area. I would keep the blade on though - good luck
Chad Richardson there is surf fishing in California. I am pretty sure there are more species available as well. You would have to research your specific area.
The Smoking Rooster )
Everything hits roster tails, kinda like castmasters not much that won't take them.
I'm going to have to get some lead, SS wire and some blades, and make some heavy surf size for bull reds and gator trout/blues.
When do you fish? 2 hours before High tide?
yes. 2 before high and 2 after high is best, usually. although there are some spots I've fish that defy this rule
Do you ever catch halibut surf fishing ?
never have
Can u make a video of how u tie ur knots
He does have that video out !
What go pro do you use ?
Hey PK, where are you fishing for these surf perch?
JP Highwater seal rock
Thank you. Love your fishing youtube channel. I will try that beach as it's closer to home, normally fish Port Orford for Surf Perch.
