I can't get over how they animate Mirabel's dress.
Yeah, the physics of the dress are insane
There's a video floating around online of the dancers dancing it out for the animators to reference.
They said they had to do it once with the dresses and once without so the animators could have references for how the legs are moving under the dress.
So much attention to detail.
Honestly, Mirabel's dress is the best animated character of the movie.
I watched Encanto and all I could think was how far 3D animation has come since Toy Story. I really loved the detail in this movie.
Having dabbled a bit in clothsim myself, it really is insane to look at. The sheer processing power it must've taken is mind-boggling.
In an interview, Lin-Manuel Miranda said he wrote that fast section of "Family Madrigal" with the slick rhymes to sound like the way a trumpet or horn section would sound, but with lyrics. If you listen to it like that, you can really hear the horn influence too.
Yeah!! The "Félix married Pepa [...]" part :D
I love learning this stuff it adds a whole new layer to the song 🤩 Lin Manuel is a musical genius
@@Hoshi-Hana AND my dad married Julieta
@@1zzy_g4mer I know😊 You're right I didn't write the full sentence but I did include it with [...] 💗
@@Hoshi-Hana Thats how abuela became an abuela madrigal
I like how she says they're stars and they all get to shine.. And then in the final song they say that stars don't shine, they burn. Miranda is so good at linking music
Its like instead of a singles or albums he just makes biographies with continuous foreshadowing and callbacks
miranda?????
@@professiolboiy9113 Lin-Manuel miranda
@@professiolboiy9113 the composer lol. You didn't know his name?
It can also be interpreted as a reference to a hamilton song that he wrote too!
Stephanie Beatriz has said singing the fast verses at the end was one of the hardest parts of the movie for her because she was 9 months pregnant when she recorded that (literally gave birth a few days later) and she could hardly take a deep breath.
That’s some dedication

One thing I noticed is that when Mirabel is singing about her sisters, on Isabela part the background singers say her name with admiration, while on Luisa's it sounds demanding... It really reflects both of their roles on the family
Spot.On.
to me it sounded like they were cheering Luisa on
@@rly6078 good observation as well!
Also in the beginning when we first see Isabela she blocks Mirabel with her hair which shows how Mirabel isn't welcome and how she is just better
So, the accordion is a cornerstone of Colombian music, that’s why it’s so prevalent in Encanto. It’s what makes Colombian music what it is.
For real. As a Colombian it always takes me out how some people from outside don't know what an accordion is
@@danielaonate583 Yeah, I’m Colombian too and I’m so used to the sound of an accordion that when people are surprised when they hear it I find it strange
I always wanted to learn the accordion since it so fascinating to use. I didn't know that the accordion is very prevalent to Colombia and I'm glad it was always heard throughout the film in Encanto.
Im crying. Im half Colombian and half Dominican raised in nyc and this movie is EVERYTHING to me . my grandpa use to play the accordion for me and my sister when we were little. He would have loved this movie 💗❤
@@danielaonate583 i think most people know what it is. It was invented in France and became massive in Europe and its used in a lot of southern music in the US
Fun trivia: that rap at the end of this song are the fastest lyrics in any Disney song and when Lin wrote them, they'd already cast Stephanie Beatriz and he said he knew she could handle it so he just went for it. I absolutely LOVE the idea of a Disney heroine rapping. :)
I imagine Isabela being awake way before Mirabel opened her door, just laying in bed and powering up mentally for another day of pretending to be perfect. Nobody just wakes up like this hahah
Influencers be like....
Yeah lol they be waking up all bedheaded and with drool then they get up do their makeup and hair and then setup their camera and pretend to "wake up" in a perfect manner
Probably what she did here
The family name, Madrigal, is a type of music, similar to We Don't Talk About Bruno where you have multiple somewhat chaotic parts that come together and compliment each other (Also might be a metaphor for the family itself)
And it's an English rhyme to magical.. So many layers 😍😍
The Lin technique 😂
A Madrigal is a group of people singing together, like a choir but has some people singing while others don't at times.
Trivia, it is not actually a regular guitar but a Colombian Tiple that it is being played, it is considered the national instrument of Colombia ( you can see it from the third villager when Mirabel is given the accordion) and it is a 12 stringed instrument but the strings are grouped in 4 courses of 3 strings each.
Really interesting know! Thanks for sharing that with me 🙏 Obviously I hear strings and make that connection to a Spanish guitar, great to learn something new today 😁
There's an interesting theme of three's that plays into that, check out Howard Ho's video, he brings the song structure, use of chords, and the story all together in a crazy way that'll just blow your mind that Lin planned all that.
Having a melody per character and repeating them in different songs is a very Lin Manuel Miranda thing. He did the same thing in Hamilton and I think it's extremely cool
He does that SO much in Hamilton! I’m finding more connections every day!
The man knows how to work leitmotivs very well!
His use of leitmotifs is similar to one of his mentors - Sondheim.
he also does it in In The Heights 😂
I love how Mirabel doing a recap of everyone's powers pulls triple duty - it's an in-universe avoidance of talking about her own power, it's a character beat that clues the audience in that Mirabel is hiding something if they hadn't already noticed (and how she feels about her status in her family), BUT MOSTLY it's a crucial repetition that helps fix all these people they've just learned about in the audience's mind. This song is just so good at doing everything it's supposed to do.
Exactly, we've got about a dozen characters to describe their personalities and powers right up front, which is a HUGE job for one song to do, and yet it does it.
Exposition dump opening intro song (but done right)
i also like how Mira says "the beauty and the brawn do no wrong". showing how she views her sisters and how she views herself as someone who can never do anything right. there are so many little details that you have to rewatch the movie to catch.
I never noticed until now, but while Mirabel is singing about her sisters the chorus is singing "isa isa", linking ISAbela and LuISA
Dont they go "Luisa, Luisa!" during her singing about Luisa
Isa-BELLLLLLA~! Isa-BELLLLLLA~!
Luisa! Luisa! Luisa! Luisa!
They are saying Luisa
Woah you’re right
@@francisbarbado4665 no hes not
I speculate that Mirabel's gift is communicating with the house. She's the only one to seem to be able to communicate with (like fully understand) the movement of the house. Like when she went into Bruno's tower, and the tiles waved. She knew they were saying that they can't help in there.. But, if we go the more 'family trauma' route, perhaps her gift is really being a mediator.
thats exactly what it is. she's Abuela's successor, kinda like the next head of the house hold. that's why at the end of the movie to door has her front and center. Her gift is her ability to hold the family together, and do better than Abuela did.
She and Abuela Alma are the only people in the Madrigal family (apart from Augustín and Félix, who married into the family) without a gift, and they are both shown to talk to the casita. It’s intended to draw a parallel between Alma and Mirabel: she gets Abuela’s gift of being the next generation’s matriarch
Like Abuela Alma her gift is being the protector of the gift that’s why when they are fighting the miracle becomes weaker
The house represents the family, so being able to communicate with the house and being able to understand the family are symbolically the same thing.
I like this theory, and maybe you guys are exactly correct. But I speculated her power was a little different. That it was actually her emotions affect magic as a whole. As in she literally has the ability to drain or amplify magic. And also that because she was scared when she first went to open her door, her emotions actually drained the magic from the door
everybody: mirabel doesnt have a gift
me listening such skills at singing: right.....
I think this every day. She does everything through song, and it does tend to fix stuff
Mirabel gift is that flowing dress
3:43 you can notice she actually knocks alot of times on Camilo's door and only once in Dolore's door, since she can wake up and hear it easily, but I can imagine Camilo has a hard time waking up🤣 but I like to imagine this is how it went:
Mirabel: 🎵this is our home we've got every generation!🎵 *knocks in music*
Camilo (in his mind): oh god I already know that's Mirabel😭
Antonio not Camilo
@@lesbianracoongod5502 It's Camilo's room. Antonio doesn't get his room till the ceremony when he receives his gift.
@@lesbianracoongod5502 Antonio doesnt have his own door yet
OKAY, BUT
LMAO 😭
unless Camilo can turn into a bat he won't hear it
Oh also I love that one of Abuela’s lines in the song is “the world keeps turning” and in “Dos Oruguitas” there’s a line about the caterpillars “in a world that turns and never stops turning.”
I really like the detail of the background singers when Mirabel is introducing her sisters: they sing Isabela in a reverent way and it’s sort of celebratory, but when Mirabel moves on to Luisa they begin chanting her name - because we all know that Luisa is the name that gets called when shit needs to get done!
In my opinion people should've watched this before "we don't talk about Bruno" so they wouldn't be confused with Camilo
Thank you! I don't think I've seen a single reactor that didn't watch We don't talk about Bruno first. To me it would just make sense to watch The family Madrigal first to get an idea of the characters.
(Also, in my opinion We don't talk about Bruno is way too overrated.)
or with why dolores' part you can hear everything
It's because the song really blow up. I mean it's number 1 on the billboard. Of course everyone who doesn't watch the movie gravitate towards that song.
When i saw that song, i thought Camilo and Bruno had a conection and that Camilo was bad because they were the only ones that demonstrasted powers, whole useless theorys. At least i dont think that happens, havent seen the movie yet
Stephanie is a fantastic voice actress!! You can tell she got really into this and took her role seriously and passionate
Once Luisa puts down the bridge, she's instantly called to do something else.
Just another tiny piece of foreshadowing
I’d almost guarantee Stephanie Beatriz is smiling while singing this. You can almost hear the smile in her voice! It is infectious.
Abuela Alma's verse in this song also matches the rhythm and tempo from "Dos Oruguitas." The musical connections throughout this movie are insane. At this point I'm pretty sure that my wife and I are more obsessed with this movie than our kids are.
yeah, he pointed that out in the video
Lin-Manuel Miranda says he was surprised that the song that broke this movie is "We don't talk about Bruno" because that song is plot driven and specific. So even the giften master he is, he was surprised by what the fans found the most amazing 😍😍
For me "we don't talk about Bruno" is the best song of the movie because of 2 things: the variety of beautiful tones during the song, harmonizing, and the layered of each voice at the end, all togheter (completly blew me off). Is the song that stand out the most because of that. He îs pure genius
My favorite part about this song is that it's just like A Girl Worth Fighting For from Mulan in that it's a bop up until it hits you with a real gut punch right at the end. Although at least in Encanto most people would have noticed Mirabel's continuous deflection and thought about the reason for it first
Lin-Manuel says the kid he related to the most is the one that drinks coffee. He even has a coffee cup tattooed on his body.
Also when she introduces her dad and uncle explaining who they married, Lin said he wanted it to sound like a trumpet sound and he used Stephanie’s voice because he knew she could do it
Omg you are the first person who Ive watched that recognised that Abuela actually sings dos oruguitas in this song. I love how you can hear and pick up these golden nuggets!
Before Anthonio's ceremony, when the Mirabel light a candle in front of the abuela's room there r few pictures of abuela with each child when they got gifts on the wall. Only in isabella's photo Abuela hugged her and kissed i think. But in other pictures she's standing straightly. Its another clue about abuela's fav child
in spanish, she says "that's why you shouldn't drink coffee" instead, which could still mean "you, a child" if you want it to, but in latino households it's a bit more common for children to drink coffee, so it could also mean "you, as a person especifically" which is how i as a latina read it at first
I remember when I annoyed my grandma to give me coffee, kinda hated it bit now I'm obsessed
I am SO glad you caught the light-bump on Dolores' door versus the multi-knock she did on Camilo's and Isabela's.
Cant wait to see you react to 'dos oruguitas' from this movie. Probably my favourite.
Also abuela's lines in this song totally link with hers and Mirabel's in 'all of you' later on.
he has already seen the movie, and he mentioned the connection with Dos Oruguitas in this video
"Waiting on a Miracle," please. Ugh, my heart. Gets me every time because of the way I relate to Mirabel, wanting to be noticed and important and useful; feeling overlooked because I don't feel like I'm special.
Please do the In The Heights intro next
oooo yes! I like this one
Abuela Alma's singing voice sounds exactly, EXACTLY like my Colombian grandma, Abuelita Zoraida who passed away in 2019. When Abuela comes on the screen for her part I start choking up like crazy even before she starts to sing, and as soon as she says "We swear to always...." I can't control the tears.
The accordion is super important! It's a big part of Colombian music and personally as a German person (more specific, Bavarian) that instrument also makes our music what it is. You can't leave it out💚
As brazillian, there's a type of music here that uses a lot accordion as well ;)
I could write a dissertation on Encanto.
And when they do Encanto 2, I want Luisa to find love. I don't care how, but make her feel that she deserves to be loved not just because of her strength, but because of her.
My favorite line is “My family’s amazing, and I’m in my family so” that’s a bar 😂
8:45 the face he makes when he realizes what the melody is makes me so happy I don't know why
Knox thank you. I need help for my drug problems and your song really got to me. It touched me and made me drop my morphine addiction. 5:05 "natural noices" you need to react to the opening scene of In The Heights! (Also by Lin). Here the protagonist is casita and In The Heights its the barrio (the neighborhood): "let me listen to my block" 💕
The way abuela calls mirabels name. EVERY HISPANIC MOM EVER
The fast section of this song reminds me a bit of Guns and Ships the way Mirabel raps and then the children ask/say "What about Mirabel?/Mirabel!" just like Lafayette raps rly fast and between the verses the ensemble says "Lafayette!/Hamilton!"
Did not expect you to break down disney so intrinsically. Great video Knox
I'm latina and recently put my mom to watch Encanto, she absolutely loved the songs, it's so catchy and so latino 🥳
When you realize each trio of siblings represents a trinity (triplets-present weather, past injuries, and future J’s kids-Isa’s beauty, Mira’s brain, and Lou’s brawn P’s kids-see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil)
Wow Ayo I never realised that
This song is the perfect introduction to all the characters and the mood of the movie!
LOVE how they added the sound of her throwing the accordion into the studio version
I love how Abuela’s melody is the same melody from Dos Oruguitas. Such great musical foreshadowing.
This is probably one of the best song analysis I’ve seen in a while. You pointed out so many things, and you made them really easy for us to see notice them too! Great video!
To contrast Isabela’s long, adoring verse, Luisa’s is just 4 words!
Isabela:
(Isabela!) Grows a flower, and the town goes wild.
(Isabela!) She’s the perfect Golden child.
Luisa:
(Luisa, Luisa!) And Luisa’s super strong.
This shows how completely overlooked Luisa is in comparison to her older sister (even by Mirabel!) and how people only care about her strength. Nothing at all about her as a person.
I love your reactions and breakdowns, I got most of the doubles, hidden meanings, etc but you aaaalways pick stuff out I never figured out! Also can't wait for dos oruguitas, easily one of the best ones ♥
I love how the Abuela in Encanto is also abuela Claudia in in the Heights. I can't unhear it now.
Love your new song Knox. Hoping you'll be back with regular BTS soon but enjoying all your breakdowns. Thank you!
More singing Knox 🙂😍I NEED your albumn dangit
8:48 You caught it! Truly amazing how LMM connects each song ^^
8:37 YOUVE JUST BLOWN MY MIND????
ive listened to this song so many times and i hadnt noticed that omg
I always liked how the music stops at the same point in the lyrics, for "we don't talk about Bruno" and "Isabella and Luisa".
I love me some Disney music but there isn’t another reactor I’d watch break a Disney song down. Knox is just different.
🙌🙏
I think Casita houses abuelos soul... the playfulness reminds me of a grandfather. I'm a Latina mother; my kids say my food is bomb, but I'm more like Pepa. Lol
I love your reactions! Very cool way to describe the music and analysis of the lyrics!! Well done!
Really cool!
With all the trivia, reference, and some things I didn't even realize before... Man... That level of knowledge is admirable.
Just wanna add that, it might be from "dancing" perspective, you can see most of their movements are clicked with the beat.
Also “madrigal” means (in music) a set of voices that overlaps!!
I’m so glad someone finally caught how Abuela’s verse was from Dos Oroguitas! It struck me one day as being the same but I haven’t seen any of these videos point it out!
Loving your music Knox. I don't give up ever. I'll get ya on my show one day!
I appreciate your reaction vids on Encanto so much
I love your voice by the way. I think I could listen to you rap all day.
Clicked so fast! love your reactions!
Amazing reactions man!
Your comment just added so many details from this song that I didn't think I've heard before.. especially the Agustín one since it's too fast for me. Thank you Knox
Here to help people appreciate the music a little bit more. Thank you for continuing to support
@@KnoxHill can't wait for more Encanto reaction if you haven't done them all~ definitely will be watching
So suprising they getting swag into flow 🔥
Listening through all the songs again, it seems like every other character is in a 4/4 tempo except for Mirabel who sounds like she is in a 3/4 tempo. I could be wrong, but it could be a symbol of how she feels like she doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the family because she has no gift
Family Madrigal is also 4/4 time. However, Mirabel's solo Waiting on a Miracle is the only song in 3/4
@@loupgarou95 Lin-Manuel did that on purpose to show that Mirabel is out of sync with her family.
the detail that the town sings Luisa's name the way they do when need her to do something is amazing
Did you also realize that in what else can i do when mirabel says like "it just seemed like your lifes been a dream" that it has the same rythm as in we dont talk about bruno that "he told me that the life of my dreams" ect
When are you doing the other Encanto songs? There are two left (pretty sure)! I have thoroughly enjoyed your reactions and breakdowns of them. I find it enhances the songs when you listen to them after watching these
All of you please it's so good. I can't wait to see your reaction for Dolores' bit
congrats on 690k subs... nice number by the way;)
This is my 2nd favourite song fron the movie, I just love it so much, especially the recap breakdown for the finale
Knox you really need to react to the In The Heights sountrack, the OBC one. You´ll love it!
I love you reacting videos they are my favourites
I remember Film Theory kinda breaking down how Isabella was made the “ perfect child “ because she has the most similarities to Abuela when she was younger and how her marrying Mariano who looks very similar to Abuelo was meant to give Abuela the life she never got to have.
Broooo I even begged you on Twitter for this but you need to respond to Dos Oruguitas!! I know you know Spanish. This will determine whether my latina (Chilean) wife will subscribe to your channel too haha
Well done….as usual! 🙌🏾
Speaking of Dolores she actually got her own fan-made song called "Turn it down"
it's very good
I need help and Hip Hop is dead are just too good man, keep it up Knox

This an ode to the variety of Colombian music 😁
Do “Waiting on a Miracle” by the same movie, Encanto.

You reminded me i have an upcoming band project- Damn this! Haha
Delores' shoulder shimmy is everything.
Good catch on Abuela's part. Most reactions I have seen don't comment on that at all.
Next thing we know Knox will be breaking down Let It God or Do You Want To Build a snowman lol. And knox I love your new I ralate to it so much especially as a rapper on his come up
Amazing' stay safe and healthy💖🥰
Finally got around to watching Encanto recently. Best decision I’ve ever made as a Disney fan and a hip-hop fan. I swear, once you know that Lin-Manuel has written something you can just hear it in the lyrics. I don’t know what it is. Also, Knox, as a British guy in love with Spanish spoken culture and has been learning Spanish since high school, I appreciate you putting on the Spanish accent for certain words. I’m weird in a way that when someone speaks a second language without putting the accent on it triggers me I don’t know what it is. 😂😂😂
Love you knoxhill
i didnt even notice that dolores door hip bump detail! wow
