The beauty of the candle is even deeper... Alma y Pedro's entire story started with little candles when they first met. The enchanted candle is their wedding candle. It lit the room behind their wedding photo when she told him about the triplets, and it lit their way when they fled. It's where the family truly started.
Yeah!!! They met on the Day of the Candles. The most important tradition of Colombia
That’s actually crazy because this could mean that the candle gave them no power at al and it was a symbolism of the family being powerful (together). That would be pretty cool
@@richardsaid973 cool theory except for the, ya know, actual magical abilities
to be clear im not mocking or arguing, it would be really cool symbolism
@@mrroboshadow The family itself powers the miracle, and the miracle's stability was reflected in the candle.
In a way, it is symbolism of Abuella's being trapped in the sorrows of the past.
@@brolytriplethreat except there was Bruno who was very unhappy with his gift and his treatment due to it and in his time the magic was perfectly stable
so if the miracle wavered with Mirabelle's self doubts it should have done so with Bruno as well
I don't speak Spanish, but the haunting beauty of this song makes me cry every single time I listen to it. It is beautiful
When i first heard it, i had no idea what was spoken. But the imagery and emotion left my sobbing like crazy! Beautiful.
Im spanish and the words in the song made it even sadder :’)
Amazing what music can do even with a language barrier
@@thanossnap4170 Not sure if I believe you with that username :0
@Deviro Well they do play captions if it's not being watched in Spanish
As a Spanish speaker, I have to recognize that you explained the "ita" suffix better than I would have, especially in the context of this song.
Absolutely!!!!
Yo fr, I’m both ashamed and impressed LOL
Sometimes it's harder to translate from your native tongue than to it. You're so used to what it just means, what you just know, that you can't find the right words in the new language.
@@chellesama8256that's the best way to explain it. I've seen many Spanish people struggle to explain Spanish words in English cause they never had to translate it they just know what it means
Ah YES......Knox the English teacher, the historian, the spanish translator, the rapper man what else could you do???
I know I am so impressed with his intelligence
what else can he doooooooo? (encanto song reference!!)

Anime songs geek break downs xD
This movie moves Colombians, because one of the most emotional scenes in the film reminds us of the displacement and violence that many of us experience as a result of the wars between guerrillas, paramilitaries, drug traffickers and the government. It reminds us of how many of our families lost one of their pillars (Dad) and how Mom had to rebuild her family from the ashes after losing everything. Our grandmothers and mothers are heroines for Colombians, they gave everything to rebuild their families, and our country. That is why the role of the grandmother in this film is important because thanks to all her sacrifices to her great strength, our house is being rebuilt, our beautiful home Colombia.
A year late, and not Columbian, but I understand you 100%. This is why I defended Abuela so much on the interwebs when this came out.
This was one of the best, most comprehensive breakdowns of the lyrics and their symbolism. Very nice.
Thank you 🙏
I almost cried when I heard fans theory that Casita was Abuelo. That's really beautiful to be true 😢 I mean that's what the leader of the family did right, protect the family in any circumstances so he became a house for the madrigals
Just adds a beautiful new level to Casita interacting so much with Mirabel when she’s the only one (that we see) acknowledging the portrait of Abuelo. The only other person who talks about Pedro is Abuela
And add in that Casita helps and protects Mirabel while she attempts to save the candle, all while it is breaking apart, and it's last move was to get Mirabel covered with furniture and doors to keep her safe as it completely falls apart.
Thank you!!!! FINALLY someone gets it! Every review I’ve seen so far not one person has noticed that the song is about Abuela and Abuelo and that’s why in the end it goes from 2 catapillars to two butterflies. Also mad respect for catching so much of what’s in the song in Spanish. As a child of Colombian immigrants this movie and especially this song really hit
me. Your right, as a father this also hits on another level. I started watching you cause of your Em breakdowns but really enjoying all your content. Thank you sir.
I mean…. It’s not that hard to just look up the Spanish lyrics and then do a quick google search of Spanish instruments etc. A lot of what he has said is literally referenced in other videos too. He’s just done really good research before reacting to the video to ensure he’s thorough and draws people in.
@@sukiyoyamada2234; Are you minimizing other's sensibility and authenticity without knowing the kind person?
@@sukiyoyamada2234 your native brothers and sisters are all saying (not to discredit you personally but...) they all agree and he knows his translations of Spanish Perfectly cause he himself speaks both languages: not everyone can do that amigo. This isn't a boost for him either however if you going do a break down analysis Especially by honoring what this symbolizes, what Truly represents do it Right. Knox further breaks this down the Definitive meaning into a metaphoric symbolizing a butterfly(It's stages in developing from a caterpillar, cocoon and butterfly..and know butterflies are a Huge thing in Columbia) a child can understand,a young person going through different mental problems In their life understands this breakdown and adult with the utmost Respect of this creative portrayal would turn their heads and stop and listen, and elderly person wouldn't say anything except "thank you,you honor me and my country.."this is gift you have"
I do love that you explain the lyrics and how they are related to our history 🇨🇴. In Colombia, many people have suffered because of the conflict. Almost everybody knows a displaced person and tons of women (grandmas, moms, sisters) have raised children alone.
Thanks for paying attention to details as our typical instruments involved.
Saludos desde Colombia 🇨🇴❤
Certificación de knox, excelente .
Notice the candle changing at Pedro's death, the change goes from the ground up and then explodes... I like to think Abuelo Pedro's soul traveled through the ground to fill the candle, then "exploded", doing away with the attackers. Also, it mirrors the "explosion" of the butterflies near the end, when Abuela Alma and Mirabel are embracing at the river...
Since almost every character has a song that they sing, I like to think that Pedro is singing this song...
I love your thought about Pedro having this song as his own. The man gave his life for his family, he deserves more recognition than the mostly background that we've had of him
If you haven’t yet, you can check out Howard Ho’s analysis of Dos Oruguitas. He does a lot of musical analysis from music theory perspective. He also does a lot of Hamilton and even Frozen analyses. Here’s to Dos Oruguitas winning the Oscar and finally giving Lin his well-deserved EGOT! xD
The reoccurence of the triplet motif is so genius. This was a great analysis.
Yessss!!! It’s such a great analysis !!!
I hear it will be a MacPEGOT (MacArthur Grant, Pullitzer Prize, Emmy, Grammy, OSCAR & Tony!)
When he mentioned the triplets, I thought this exact thing!! And the fact that Lin acknowledged Howard Ho's analysis, makes it even better.
Sadly Dos Oruguitas didn't won.... That would have been * chefs kiss * and well deserved
This song BROKE me in theaters. I had to struggle not to cry lol.... but I had no idea what the heck he was saying. The emotion was just so obvious, so clear as crystal. It does so very well at handing the message right past the language barrier. Absolutely masterful.
I'm so glad that Sebastian got a nomination for singing Dos Oruguitas. He deserves it for the performance
I love that you breakdown the spanish lyrics too, it's a perfectly layered song and the message in it is so beautiful, amazing song.
This guy is clearly intelligent. I hadn’t caught the musical triplet notes while Alma was looking at her baby triplets or a lot of the Spanish lyrics deeper meaning. Great reaction video!
Nobody talks about how faithful was Alma to Pedro, she could remarry but didn't do it. Some Colombian grandmas did but most of them were like Abuela Alma paid respect to the greatest love of their lives. Dos Oruguitas es una balada bellísima y muy bien construida. Your a great dad, I can tell. blessings for you and your family.
My grandma got widow pretty young and she didn’t remarry because the love of her life died because of cancer
My granny is still mourning her husband. I didn't know him, he died before I was born... And I'm over 30 now.
My grandma loved my grandpa so much, after he died she listens to songs that reminds her of him and cries :(
@@JulianGutie my grandpa also died of cancer and my grandma never remarried
I mean... You can probably call it "being faithful" but I would call it being traumatized. Like it's fucking hurt to remarry after seeing your husband die, leaving you with 3 infants, a magical candal and a shit ton of people to care about. Alma didn't recover till the end of the movie, she spent her whole life caring about Encanto and their magic. Not much time to find love, you know?
You're the biggest nerd I know! You breakdown Em lyrics like nothing. And you surprised me when you knew some Filipino references that EZ Mil made. That was so unexpected!! And you gave me new understanding of Hamilton with your history knowledge! And now you're breaking down SPANISH LYRICS?! I mean I know you said you spoke (a bit from what I remember you saying).. i mean I thought I spoke it a bit but probably not now! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 big brain 🧠 energy all day here!
YASSSSS !! This !! 🔥🔥
Fantastic reaction, and you caught so much that others haven't. The most emotional part is seeing Alma's grief when Pedro was killed. The contrast between the telling of the story at the start of the movie, and this more visceral retelling is just devastating. How they were able to translate that much human emotion into an animated face is just stunning.
All the meanings they managed to put into one single song about caterpillars blows my mind. Still can't listen to this one without tearing up. For a while, I couldn't even listen to it, it made me so emotional.
The triplets while holding triplets… didn’t realize that, it was mind blowing, Lin-Manuel’s tan for life. Great reaction
The movie scene for this song always kills my heart when he dies because they do SO WELL at animating her agony.
7:44 Listen: in a moment the agony/grieving CELLO is introduced below the other melodic lines. Tears me apart every time.
Sebastian Yatra's beautiful voice makes this song even better.
Hopefully Oscar voters will watch this to understand the amazing depth of this song and how epic it was for this movie.
SHOUT OUT TO THE GORGEOUS VOICE OF SEBASTIAN YARTA !!!!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥💗
🇨🇴👑🤠
The last country I travelled to before the world was closed off was Colombia and I absolutely fell in love with it. I've been unable to go back, but this movie hit at the right time and was surprisingly refreshing, coming from Disney. Outside of literary circles where everyone loves Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Colombia's appearances in Western media usually just reinforce negative stereotypes of war and drugs. It's truly an extraordinary country, and I hope this movie encourages a few more people to discover it. Such diversity of landscapes, people and culture. Amazonian jungle, Andean peaks, Caribbean beaches, and even desert, on top of amazing cities (particularly Bogotá, Medellin and Cartagena). Go to the ancient ruins of la Ciudad Perdida, the Martian landscapes of La Guajira or the incredible mountains of El Cocuy. Anyway, great reaction, loved that you had Spanish going for you (a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one), and keep up the good work. As for the everyone else: go to Colombia, it is amazing.
💖 Will do!
Dammit. I'm listening to this at work and this song always makes me tear up. Pedro gave up his life for his wife and kids. That man was willing and did give up his life to protect his wife and kids. That is a great example of a what a good father does. He puts the needs of his loved ones above himself even if it means he suffers and dies for them. I like to think I would do the same.
Never thought I'd be tearing up during one of your breakdown videos lol 😅
Beautifully analyzed and broken down Knox :D
same i've seen this so many times but got emotional all over again now
The saddest part about this is that this thing keeps happening in Colombia. I hope someday we can overcome this situations and let all that trauma and pain behind.
The scene of Abuela crying at the candle that grief was so powerful it reminded of that scene from Wandavision. Grief is a powerful emotion.
Sebastian Yatra, the singer, is truly amazing
Wow, just wow. Thank you Knox, for reacting to the spanish version. I'm so proud of my language, and I think this song has something special and something even more warm in this version ^^. Also, you really know your spanish, great job!!
I don't understand one word of Spanish but I understand this song
My favorite thing about this reaction: your Spanish skills but more importantly, how mesmerized you were that you just let the music speak for itself 😊. Bien hecho, amigo!!
Oh I'm not even all the way in and I *know* you're gonna love this. (And when you go back to The Family Madrigal, you'll hear that Abuela sings her part to this melody.) I also LOVE that you could hear it was a tiple right off. Your ear is amazing. Thanks for all you do!
And fun fact: it is actually the first song that Lin ever has written in Spanish.
Man! How did you learned Spanish?😱😱👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. Tienes un nivel de entendimiento bárbaro, lo entiendes a la perfección, estoy muy impresionada porque el español es muy rico en significado y complicado para el angloparlante regular. Felicidades!
Thank you, thank you so much for your full-on unraveling of analysis about everything this gorgeous song entails in each and every aspect: language, musicality, lyrics, history, poetry, philosophy and Colombian culture.
As a Colombian viewer, I truly am grateful for your video.
💛💛💙❤ 🦋🕯
Hey, I loved that you picked the detail with the triplets and the Harp, and like the Tiple we also have our own kind of Harp here in Colombia (and Venezuela) and is played mostly in a genre known as música llanera, that instrument I'm not very knowledgeable but I do know it is a diatonic instrument.
To see someone incredible playing it I do recommend checking Edmar Castañeda and he also plays a fusion of jazz and Colombian/Venezuelan folk music as well.
I always get goosebumps every single time I watch and listen to the MV. The delivery and lyrics are so good, and the visuals are just perfect. We can feel Abuela's story even without any dialogue. Great break down to a great song
It’s funny that people don’t really talk about how when the triplet CHILDREN (BRUNO Julieta and Pepa) are shown the music plays MUSICAL triplets with the harp. Lin is known to play chess when it comes to lyrics and the way music is written. I’d love to see a reaction to a video breaking down the music in this movie!
I'm so glad that you know Spanish, and your break down of the lyrics really brings this song to life for those who don't know. This is an amazing reaction, Knox, thanks for putting your time into this video!
No habia visto a alguien que tuviera tanto conocimiento y explicara tambien toda la emocionalidad de este tema. Eres un duro 👏👏👏👏 respeto de una humilde colombiana.
this commentary really secured my subscription. you don't just bring the reaction, you bring the knowledge and the insight and the analysis! seriously, underrated and amazing work!
You sound like a preacher telling this heavenly story. I feel just as connected to your explanation as I do with the song.
When I first heard this song, I thought I knew it from somewhere but then I realize it was brand new. I guess it just had that familiar vibe to it. I cried so much in this movie
Lin-Manuel Miranda would be glad to hear you say that - he was aiming for the sound of a traditional folk song, something that would feel familiar even if you've never heard it before!
Encanto was fun, its release seems to have been quite quiet, but then it picked up steam rapidly and inspired a lot of content creators to cover it from a lot of angles.
Since you know Spanish and seem to enjoy Lin's work you should definitely react to the soundtrack of In The Heights (I personally prefer the Cast recording over the movie soundtrack. Also they cut a few great songs of the movie)
In The Heights, Breathe, Champagne and Finale are my personal favorites
Edit: I forgot Piragua, Paciencia y Fe and All the Benny/Nina duets
Paciencia y fe is amazing in both versions. It made me cry in the movie because of the change they did to it.
@@rubenhumbertoroquesalas2273 I personally haven't watched or listened to that one but I'll definitely do at one point, a lot of people have told me that the movie version of it is great.
He does an excellent analysis of the song and the many symbols it has. However, as a Colombian, I have to add that there is something that was missing and that is that the yellow butterflies are very important because they are part of the "magical realism" of our Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez and I think it is part of the basis of the film.
There's a lot of beauty in the world we often don't see. Never realised how impactful and deep Spanish Music could be. Thank you for the lesson Knox.
Wow you're so underrated dude you need more fame for your work
I'm so impressed that you managed to pick up on the triplet thing so quickly. Also, in the family madrigal, Maribel sings her fast "rap" in triplets
Y aún hay personas que se preguntan que porqué la nominaron al Oscar en vez de "No se habla de Bruno" 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you for excellent explanation. Also, the video shows true stories of families were affected by violence. My grandparents were living in a beautiful farm near river ,mountains with many animals. We used to spend time there for Christmas. Unfortunately, the guerrilla one day burnt part ot the farm and my grandparents had to flee and move with us to the city. The movie remind that situation so I was cried a lot. The guerrilla stole our joy in that place but Thank God never stole the family we still are .
You break down Spanish lyrics too?? That’s amazing! You should check out J-Hope and Becky G - Chicken Noodle Soup as she raps in Spanish as well as English. Love your content Knox! Hoping you’ll consider checking out the new song by Jungkook and Suga ‘Stay Alive’ too💜
I'm so, so glad to see that at least someone bothered to look up the lyrics and their meaning!
You like the song or you don't, but I wondered how many non-Spanish speakers would get the message without a translation...
OMG the way you walk us thru the story in your reaction broke me in tears just like the movie did on this scene. As a Colombian I had such pride of the way the movie display our Colombianism thru the movie. But dos Oruguitas made me cry as my Mom and grandmother experienced having to run with their clothes on their back. So your reaction painted an exact picture of my family and what they endured. Bravo Encanto and Kudos to you this channel is amazing
I love you know what you're talking about. You have figured it out perfectly this song and its context.
A big hug from a Colombian based in Spain.
Dude it just hit me that Abuela's verse in 'the family Madrigal' follows the same melody as the verse in this song. How does this movie keep blowing my mind like this?
Woooooah. Good catch
I tear up every time I see this sequence.
I have never seen such an expression of anguish in an animated show, ever, as Alma when her husband is killed.
I swear I love your reactions and breakdowns so much, and to see you do Dos Oruguitas means a lot to me. Thank you so much!
What a beautiful song. Great reaction. You really know your music. ❤️
Really appreciate it! Thanks for the support
It’s interesting…apparently, the animators who worked on Alma and Pedro are a married couple. The reference actors for them are married. And what were Alma and Pedro talking about, according to Disney’s animators on Twitter? “The Lion King”-specifically the part where grown up Simba is about to give up but he sees his father Mufasa in the clouds.
I think that the reason why we believe Alma and Pedro loved each other so much is that the people who were behind the scenes love each other, too. Just like them. Alma and Pedro are a reflection of the people behind them.
Recent subscriber and binge watcher here. I love your breakdowns on everything and have been loving the posted lives on Hamilton. This song has another layer to it you didn't comment on. Two caterpillars is also about Abuela and Mirabel and them transforming the family in their own way. I love this movie and LMM's amazing writing.
Thanks for this. I had listened to another couple of your Encanto takes which were fine, but here your emotions stood out and your understanding was informative. I'm subscribed.
I watched this a dozen times and still can't stop crying
Yes!!! I just saw all your Encanto reactions and was searching for this one!!
This is one of the saddest snd most beautiful songs ive ever heard from disney. It is just designed to make you feel all of the Abuelas pain
Is it safe to say that this is the first time in all your videos I have seen you tear up?
Cause it got me crying like hell too, even if I didn’t understand Spanish language as you do. 😅
Just the sweet singing and the animation, damn 🥹
Yo real talk, I haven’t checked out a whole lot of your music yet because I’m not really quick enough to pick up on all of the craziness in the rhyme schemes and things that you do, especially if ever I decide to react to some of your music on my channel. But I just heard your intro for “I need help” and I know I gotcha check that out! I think I’ll relate to it heavy!
I'm far from fluent in Spanish, so hearing a partial translation really helps me understand this song.
Thank you so much for reacting to this song, and the Spanish version at that. I have seen many wonderful reactions to the Encanto OST but this is the first reaction to this particular song I found. And I love it. Both the song and your explanation.
Yessss you are the man Knox!! Haven't even watched this yet but I know my wife is going to be happy to see this too!
Beautiful. One of the best analysis I’ve seen. Also i believe the oruquitas is representative of Almas relationship with Pedro, and when it changes to mariposas it’s her relationship with Mirabel.
I like that you can read the nuances of the song, it’s refreshing how in depth your reaction is
I really enjoyed you took the time to look on the lyrics and understand its meaning. Wonderful reaction!
Vienen milagros... Knox entendió todo
PLEASEE PLEASE PLEASE now do a reaction to his live singing its so amazingly beautiful- he sings there with some more power, and the visuals are amazing

When I watched this in theaters it truly was a new experience to hear such an emotional song, in Spanish, on a English speaking movie ... And just realizing most gringos won't understand what is about... Immigrants!!! While sobbing I thought... Oscar, this scene is Oscar worthy 💯
This is the Best break down, I honestly had questions about this song and now understand it, thank you 💝.
Oh Knox!!, as a colombian I really love how u understand the story and disect the song giving the properlly meaning of the song. My favorite song from Encanto 💜
Love watching your Lin-Manuel Stan developing. You can tell once people have started watching his interviews as they start pronouncing his name correctly and with the Spanish inflection.
I’m off to see if you’ve found tick, tick BOOM yet?
Much love brother coming from PR, this song hits hard
Thanks man. I can see that you review all events in the story. You know what happens in all stages. That's real life in here Colombia. I appreciate your work
everytime I listen to this song and watch the music video I cry again. like ugly cry, fr. Abuela's story is so heart-wrenching and their love is so beautiful, Abuelo Pedro sacrifices everything for his little family to have a chance to be safe, no matter how overwhelmingly threatening and strong the attackers are
I just love your reaction. You have such a beatufull soul, as a colombian thanks a lot for your sensibility.
Gracias!!! Que lindo análisis de una bellísima canción! ❤️🇨🇴🤗
I love so much your reaction. This song is sooo beautiful.
Yes this song is so beautiful I got really emotional seeing this part the first time I watched Encanto. This scene and the song got to me so much💔😭
In the Heights opening number next 🙏🙏you’re the goat Knox
I actually choose to believe that that is who they chose as the voice actor for abuelo Pedro when they originally had him alive in the script that is singing two caterpillars now
YES! I was waiting for this!
Thank you for your analysis! Me encantó!
I keep forgetting you speak spanish xD
I got to your channel because of rap breakdowns
But then you hit anime and spanish tracks aswell, everything music
Knox you rock my guy 👊🏼
I’ve listened to all his encanto breakdowns and I do like how he breaks each song down. I also hear a slight Australian accent in his voice after he briefly sings his song in the intro
love Encanto even more thanks to your reactions :D
Great breakdown man feel the feels
