I just wanted to say that I am so sorry you had to go through so much at such a young age before receiving a proper diagnosis. Your talk brought me to tears. This is the exact same struggle I went through in the 90’s in Madison, Wisconsin. I had hoped that more progress in the care of the mental health of young people had been made since. You are such an inspiration and example of the perseverance it takes to be your own advocate
Thank you SO much for sharing. This is invaluable. I will be listening to this talk periodically as managing my own times of crisis. Your insights inspired me. Thank you again, Piper.
Incorrect diagnoses can be a most major problem for many young people struggling with mental illness. I should know because I was quite traumatically no exception. So thank you, Piper, so much for sharing your very important story. 💚&☮️
Thx Piper. You touched me deep inside. Another country. Similar story here. I went through that too. I finally found my way. 13 Years later. After everyone around me had already given up on me. What I realised looking back and what I can still sign exactly the same way today I. The same realisation you had. I'm not broken. I never was. Thx for sharing your story. Hats off for your courage. 🫶
Thanks for the courage of sharing your story. I can relate a lot. My first contact with mental health care system was at age 15 (Anorexia and depression). But I was struggling already as a child, just nobody looked into it (had suicidal thoughts as early as age 6). I'm 37 now and still badly struggling. Some stuff that I lived through in psych wards and hospitals only added more trauma. And 100% finding what "they" want to hear and see just makes it worse, harder to treat in the long run. I whish you the best.
Thank you for this talk. I am pretty open about my mental health, much to the chagrin of my coworkers. But maybe I should do a Ted talk. How do you recommend I do one? I kind of have a history making story.
There are civil rights issues, or there should be, with how the mentally ill are treated and medicated, unfortunately. The diagnoses, if believed, are also cages of a kind, scaring people more than helping.
Yes, I can tell you that your rights to autonomy can be taken so easily without any real oversight for these decisions made by increasingly less qualified mh professionals. And btw, better to refer to people with mental illness, rather than "the mentally ill" which reinforces the way we have always been seen as nothing more than our label.
"You can't hate yourself into feeling better." 100!

Mental health is a real concern even though just a few get to talk about it. Great speech!
We need more opportunities for the rest of us to speak about our experiences with these systems, not just our mental health conditions.
Thank you so much for your bravery!! Keep going, you are a wonderful human being! 💗

I hope you are able to do this!
I've thought that too, and don't know how.
