There's a common misconception about hybrids and "CVTs", the manufacturers don't do themselves any favors in their marketing. They are not actually CVTs. In series hybrids, which is the way Toyota's design works, the engine is not connected to the wheels most of the time. Therefore technically the engine RPM is continuously variable. It's the primary drive motor which does the majority of the work with the wheels. The engine is simply a gas generator in most scenarios. There is no downshifting, or shifting at all. Ford notably also uses a similar system.

This car gives me hope that finally some of the manufacturers are groping their way to reasonable solutions to our current obsession with $60,000+ electric technology boats that 90% of working people who need affordable transportation will never be able to purchase. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology commoditized and applied to actual economy cars will do more to cut costs for working families and to reduce CO2 production than tens of thousands of luxury 400-mile-range EVs driven maybe 40 miles a day on average and sitting around 20 hours a day just parked and hogging wasted battery capacity.

It really checks a lot of boxes for a pretty reasonable price. Comfy seats, good space, some nicer tech goodies like 7inch digital dash and option for decent speakers. Great fuel mileage.
Might sound basic but to get all that in a RAV4 is over $10k more. And for what? A little more space?
The road noise doesn’t seem to much of a negative, we’ve road tripped the GR a few times and the road noise in this is awful. Can’t be worse than that.

I disagree. My Corolla Hybrid AWD runs in EV mode 50-85% of the time when traveling sub 80kmh. Driving aggression and use of regenerative braking have a dramatic effect on efficiency. I got 3.3L/100KM yesterday.

Probably...first two gens were probably subcompact by today's standards. Update: just looked...the Corolla Cross is actually almost a foot longer than a 2002 Rav4, and four inches wider. They're within an inch in height to each other. Corolla Cross is definitely more a successor in price, size, power, and features to the early Rav4s. Similar upsizing in size, features, and power happened with the Honda CRV, and many other vehicles it seems. I hope the trend begins to stabilize and reverse...all types and sizes of cars are getting too big and cumbersome to my taste. I love the look and overall package of my parents 2020 Accord...but it's bigger than any of the "mid-size" Volvo and Honda sedans/wagons they had previously.

It had a clean and slightly quirky look that was far more appealing to me than the two more bulbous looking generations that came after. The current one is ok...but much bigger, mostly more upmarket, and trying too hard to look rugged.

I wish Toyota (and other affordable car manufacturers) would stop putting fake stitching patterns onto plastic molded panels. It looks alright in photos, but just accentuates the cheapness and cost-cutting of the car when you're actually sitting in it. They would be better off leaving in either plain, or putting some interesting design that breaks up the swaths of plastic. For the purpose of the vehicle and the price, the interior looks pretty nice, functional, and the fake stitching is completely unnecessary.

$10k over the base Corolla Cross??? Idk that is a big ask, the fuel savings you get would never be made up because the base already gets like 32 mpg combined. The base only makes like 30hp less as well so idk if that drivetrain is really worth it for a basic commuter.

Don't mind looking in how they're doing with their trucks and the performance cars, but I honestly have no interest in their droning, gutless, CVT driven cars/cuv's. Plus with Toyota pushing subscription services with their media/safety features, that's just the final nail in the coffin for my attention to them.
